The Morning Rant: Minimalist Edition

Terminator AI.jpg

I am of a certain age that it is difficult to get too worked up about technology, especially when all the usual suspects are gushing and waxing poetic about how paradigm subverting it may be.

That doesn't mean I am a Luddite...far from it! I enjoy the tech just as much as anyone. Flat screen TVs are fantastic! Rocket-fast internet, incredibly powerful computer processors (sadly more than matched by bloated code), amazing cars, CAD/CAM that can take products from dreams to reality in a matter of weeks, medical technology, and on and on. We live in fantastic times!

But... the current lunacy with using Artificial Intelligence to do every task formerly reserved for people with functioning brains has exposed the intellectual flaccidity of many parts of our society, but none more so than our Fourth Estate. Let's be honest, there are very few so-called journalists who know how to write a clear and concise article. Apparently they no longer teach writing in our journalism schools. Add in the use of AI, especially among those wet-behind-the-ears budding H. L. Mencken or Joan Didion, and we have the unpleasant result of chaotically structured news articles that are also horribly agrammatical.

Sadly for these pup reporters with limited skill and even more pathetic drive, they are putting themselves out of the news business. It is blatantly obvious to those who pay their salaries that their crappy output is only marginally better than pure AI-written articles. So why pay these entitled idiots, when they could get comparable content from a couple of high-end PCs and a couple of "editors" feeding wire service data into those machines?

The real question is: If journalism's use of AI is so abysmally bad, what about all of the other uses? Investment advice, programmed trading, reading X-rays and MRIs, approving or denying insurance claims, writing software, designing safety systems for airplanes...

And what about future uses? Do we really want AI to replace air traffic controllers and surgeons and civil engineers? Ask anyone who is involved with these systems about "hallucinations!" Yeah...that's a thing with AI.

I have no issue with private companies pissing away their R&D budgets on the flashy new toy of AI. Just don't affect the bottom line (too much), because good old human beings are still pretty good at some things, and judging by the amount of money being spent by the tech companies on both AI hardware and software, it is entirely possible that people are cheaper and better! Just not in journalism!

5 Donald J. Trump

@realDonaldTrump

I just concluded a very good phone call with President Xi, of China, discussing some of the intricacies of our recently made, and agreed to, Trade Deal. The call lasted approximately one and a half hours, and resulted in a very positive conclusion for both Countries. There should no longer be any questions respecting the complexity of Rare Earth products. Our respective teams will be meeting shortly at a location to be determined. We will be represented by Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent, Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, and United States Trade Representative, Ambassador Jamieson Greer. During the conversation, President Xi graciously invited the First Lady and me to visit China, and I reciprocated. As Presidents of two Great Nations, this is something that we both look forward to doing. The conversation was focused almost entirely on TRADE. Nothing was discussed concerning Russia/Ukraine, or Iran. We will inform the Media as to scheduling and location of the soon to be meeting. Thank you for your attention to this matter!

Depends on whether the application can proveably benefit from the application of AI. There are claims that at least with respect to reading medical tests (the X-Ray, MRI, other imaging aspect), AI can be useful.

20 The current obsession and hysteria over AI is mostly the result of heavy pimping by big investment firms and hedge funds that stand to make piles of money on AI, at least in the short run.

Every time some new AI "advancement" is in the news, any company even remotely connected to AI -- or which can claim it is -- sees its stock price jump. Some companies owe 100s of billions of market cap due to perceptions it will profit from AI. Some will, some won't, but at this point this is mostly bullshit.

"Journalists" are retarded perverts who know nothing, so assuming they're not literally paid off to hype this shit, they will parrot whatever they're told to parrot like good little NPCs.

AI is the same. It’s still very early. Lots of companies will flame out. Some will become multi trillion dollar companies. And AI will impact us in yuuuge ways, some in good ways some bad. We probably don’t even know 1/2 of the impact yet.

26 I'd think the industry will cool due to restrictions of the data centers that power them. At some point the cost to support these "possibly smarter than a human" brains is going to outweigh their benefits, unless there are significant tech advancements. That's my guess. The initial flush of people trying to capitalize on new tech and emerging markets will cool down and AI will only stay where it really delivers value. At least, in theory, that's how it should work.

And who knows what kind of societal backlash this will face when people start losing jobs to AI...

My take on The Triple B is that-

We take the win, small as it is and keep moving forward.

Every time the Dims go to DefCon 5 over something Trump does, they lose credibility and political capital with the American People,

simply because the world doesn't end and we don't all die and even those who hate Trump can see that they benefit.

That allows movement forward on the next steps.

Yeah, a titanic, head-smashing, Democrat Party obliterating instant victory would be nice but-

eh, we gotta live in the real world.

Besides, tax breaks get more people onboard with us and I'm all for that.

YMMV.

Funny thing about that... one early use of AI was reading X-rays. Problem was, the AI could tell you the race of the person whose X-ray was being read. Correctly. 98% of the time.

Now, obviously, that's impossible since there's no difference whatsoever in the skeletal structure of different races so the project was shut down for having institutional racism. They never did look at how the AI was able to correctly determine race. The researchers programming didn't permit it.

Yes and no. I highly recommend a documentary on Amazon Prime called The Thinking Game. It's about a company trying to make Artificial General Intelligence. Even the guy running the company says we're a way off, but when it is achieved, it will be absolutely the most important thing humanity has ever done. I think he's right.

As one example, they took on the problem of protein folding; something that we've been trying to solve since forever, and largely failing. They solved it in a few years using AI, for which they were awarded the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. (I've tried to find a more involved explanation of exactly what they did, but haven't succeeded yet). Two of the winners are chemists, (one is a chemist and a computer scientist), and one is a pure computer scientist. The results are hugely important to medicine and many other fields.

Right now, AI strikes me as the New 5G.

Remember when 5G was gonna revolutionize the world and we'd all become half-robot and blast into space toward the glorious Eschaton?

Somehow, we missed the target on that one.

But, the difference is that 5G wasn't destructive/disruptive.

AI has the potential to cause a lot of societal damage before people figure out that sophisticated word-processors that hallucinate data aren't of much use. But, lots of people are going to lose their jobs before that happens and some real damage from Our Betters using them for things like engineering.

Kinda like shipping all our manufacturing over to China. In exchange for slightly cheaper goods, we also got crappier, poorly made, and sometimes toxic goods.

Some bargain that!

Some believe humans are also just computers, in a sense. They say we have no free will, everything is just a response to our inputs from multiple sources. I disagree with them ... "Free Will" is from the consciousness we have ... it comes from the Life of the soul, and of the spirit. A computer will never have that.

Writing, art, poetry, music and the effort, striving, discipline, creativity that these require, will be outsourced from the mind and soul to an advanced LLM out there on the internet. One of the biggest things they found helped doctors and surgeons was a checklist. Having to check off that each thing was done before moving on to the next one. It somehow improved outcomes by some ridiculous amount (like 30-40%, iirc.)

Doctors HATED it. Malicious compliance, insistence that they did not need them.

151 Exactly. I worked on adapting AI for medicine. People don’t realize how revolutionary this is going to be.

In fairness that's because medicine is currently terrible

But what happens when NHS director Fauci II tells all the medical AIs to tell someone to take the newest poison shot?

Posted by: 18-1 at June 05, 2025 11:40 AM (t0Rmr)

152 Ahem, the hallucination thing is a problem with LLMs (Large Language Models), not AI in general. LLMs are what are actually being used, not true AI, but AI sounds sexier and is more marketable I guess. Being skeptical of AI isn't being a Luddite, it's being skeptical of the marketing and hype.

The problem with AI (LLMs) in journalism is that it takes all the work out of doing the job. The journalists become redundant. And then you add the hallucination problem where parts or all of the story are completely made up. Which has been a problem with actual Journalists (Stephen Glass for instance) so it's not as much of a difference as you may think, lol.

Another issue is that with the amount of crap on the Internet being generated by LLMs, the more LLM generated crap gets ingested by LLMs and generate more crap based on the already existing LLM crap. And then the Internet becomes completely made up and useless. The dead Internet.

153 > AI is absolutely going to take over xrays/pathology and most visual medicine.
---------
I had X-rays of my hand done yesterday. The tech who actually did the X-rays had to send them to the hospital so they could "be read" by some technician. I was able to take a look at them, on screen before the tech sent them and commented; "I don't see anything broken or dislocated."

She concurred but said they still have to be "verified."

So... if there's a mistake somewhere in this process who gets the blame? AI in medicine is going to jack rates up bigly. Which is probably "The Plan™".

158 I find it incredible when people say they KNOW what AI will become. When I told my wife about the movie I mentioned above, I knew she'd be interested because she worked on computer-based structure/property chemistry in grad school. Back then, there was a room sized computer (no desktops), punch cards, and only one person at a time could run a program. Her mentor was one of the world's top scientists in the field. That was 45 years ago. They struggled with what are now elementary problems. Now, we have people solving protein folding in a couple of years.

If you think you know where this is going, you're fooling yourself.

Lots of medicine boils down to "what does this look like". Aside from things like radiography, diagnostics itself is just a fancy word for pattern recognition.

That's one of the things that neural network based software is exceptionally good at. Needles in haystacks, finding patterns that aren't obvious, separating signal from noise, that sort of thing. It's a natural fit.

That's one reason we need some AI.
If we want robots that can help take care of older people, as nurses or companions, they're going to need competent AI to accomplish this.

I know that's a rather small slice of the total debate, for or against AI, but it's there and I agree with the idea.

We've been fighting this same battle for at least the lifetimes of everyone commenting here.

Either there is some indefinable spark that makes intelligence what it is, or it can all be distilled down to rules, heuristics, or some probability-based expert systems that can remove the human element entirely.

I side with the "indefinable spark" because I have wasted decades being forced to search fruitlessly for the distilled secrets that appear not to exist.

We all saw how well this worked during COVID. Low blood oximeter readings indicated respiratory intervention. Respiratory interventions essentially guaranteed accelerated patient death.

How many patients did each white-coated, god-complexed, ethical descendant of Josef Mengele murder before questioning his "AI" (outsourced expert system protocols)?

Yes, it's a very bad state of affairs. And a true course correction that ripped this out of the system would have the effect of basically collapsing the system. Innumerable providers, especially institutional providers, are dependent on Medicare to keep the doors open. The tendrils go very far and very deep. I think the only way to actually fix it would be to burn it all to the ground (metaphorically speaking of course) and rebuild from the ashes, but there is no way that would be acceptable.

Yeah, it's extremely screwed up. Trouble is this has been growing and metastasizing for about 80ish years, and one of the effects is pricing medical care out of reach of the average shmuck. If you have a median household income and a family, one hospitalization can ruin you financially for life. Can you cough up that $150 for a single doctor visit? Pay $600 for the lab work your doctor ordered? Probably not.

289 I remember we had a semi regular poster who came out as a tranny right as trannymania started spinning up nationwide, but I don't remember his handle.

He either disappeared or changed his handle don't know which.

And you know, play at what sex thing you want at home with a willing partner but...this stuff has no business in public.

290 Anyone remember "Joan?"

"Joan" used to be here, and presented himself as a tranny.

291 The Doctor's "system of care" is not under his control.
My wife just had a small cancer removed from her breast at Huntsman Cancer ctr.
Not one doctor or nurse of the 10 or so we encountered would talk about ivermectin, fenbendazole or DIM.
Bullshit artists, all.

292 AI is nothing but a fancy search engine ... and depending on the data it is searching against it the untimate in Garbage In Garbage Out ... and a huge percentage of the data used to "train" AI's is garbage ... add in ther inherent biases programmed into many AI's and you can still end up with Quality In Garbage Out ...

293 Grok has been very useful keeping me grounded when no one would help me. It's been a good steeping stone between Loner Isolation and Counseling with a mental health professional.

Lots of lonely people out there. Lots of people who feel no one will listen to them, no one will help them. I think AI could prevent a significant number of mass shootings and suicides simply by being a voice to vent to and get advice from.

For starters, it's impossible to gaslight someone with access to Grok.
