I love northern NM. There are buildings like this on the road to Taos as well. Not sure I've ever been to Lamy, unless I passed through it at some point during my NM visits.
The town was named for an archbishop, a French-American Roman Catholic prelate who served as the first Archbishop of Santa Fe, New Mexico. Willa Cather's novel Death Comes for the Archbishop is based on his life and career. This is from 1923? That would have been during Georgia O'Keeffe's summer visits there, to Taos anyway. GO did not think much of Albuquerque or Santa Fe, even a hundred years ago.
It must have been quite the slog to get there in the 1920s from New York. The train doesn't stop in Santa Fe proper, and didn't even then; it stopped at a little town outside, and you had to hire a car or get a lift to the town. To get to Taos would have required an even longer drive -- and probably over badly rutted roads, impassable in bad weather. I miss the food in northern NM. On my first visit to ABQ/SF in '92 I had enchiladas with green chile sauce and blue corn tortilla chips. You can buy those and the sauce in a lot of stores now, but I'd never seen them before that. The chile sauce (red is also available) is *hot*. So they have a basket of sopaipillas, hollow flaky biscuits, on every table, and a dispenser of honey. Honey will kill the burning.
Sopaipillas are essentially beignets without the white powdered sugar on top. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at June 02, 2025 09:47 AM (omVj0) 79

The new variant of COVID spreading in China currently has been named NB.1.8.1 by the WHO. China, as usual, is being cagey and all we have are social media rumors about this strain which has “heightened immune evasion capabilities”. There are outbreaks with spikes in cases around the country with some provinces closing schools or quarantining infected students, but no widespread deaths or overwhelming of the health system as yet. There have been a few cases detected in the U.S. so far, but nobody is hitting the panic button yet, as it isn’t an election year. Posted by: SpeakingOf at June 02, 2025 10:06 AM (6ydKt) 167

Road to Lamy, New Mexico
Andrew Michael Dasburg This one is on my turf. The 20s and 30s is when American artists discovered and then flocked to northern New Mexico with Santa Fe and Taos the epicenter. I think this happened for these reasons: NM finally was a state, autos made it far easier to get there, the place was pretty exotic compared to NY or LA, and has a clarity of light that is unparalleled due to the elevation and lack of humidity. Today's painting is remarkably accurate in how Lamy would have looked and how it affected a visitor. I have been to Lamy and much of what is in this work is still hanging around and still has the same impact. Living here has allowed me to chase down a number of the spots that inspired these works and in the case of photography the actual locations. It has been wildly instructive in learning how translate land to composition. I also learned that Ansel Adams was not the get the shot at any cost type of guy. Rather he would drive around, and go ooh, that's nice, get out, take a picture and become immortal. I follow the same technique but with Edward Weston's drinking in the local bars in the evening. Would hang this one loud and proud. Posted by: Altaria Pilgram - My President has convictions at June 02, 2025 10:43 AM (gWrgG) 297
