I enjoy this kind of painting with the wonderful use of light, detail, composition, and pose of the figures. I find the scene with its romanticized realism draws the viewer in as they notice more and more of all the subtle and bigger details of the painting. Then the questions begin: Who is the girl? What is her situation? She is clearly comfortable and at ease but not wealthy. And what happens after she leaves the alley?
Reminds me of many NC Wyeth illustrations. They show the immediate scene but the sense of what happens next is always in the viewer's mind. Posted by: JTB at June 03, 2025 09:51 AM (yTvNw) 82

Algeria used to provide some of the best briar wood, used for making smoking pipes, in the world. Maybe they still do. No wonder French pipemakers produced such fine pipes; they had the raw material right in their back yard, so to speak.

Saw a funny story on X last night. 20 years ago in early planning for the Cali high-speed rail debacle, they brought in people from Japan and France's successful high-speed rail operators as consultants. The consultants eventually quit in disgust and said the government in Morocco (where they had successfully built a high-speed rail line) was much less corrupt than California's.

Wolfus, I read somewhere that the war in Algeria, 1954 to early 60s, really messed up harvesting the briar and it didn't come back to the same degree. (The Frogs fire bombed the area that had the most briar.) There is probably some still available but les than before. I am really, really, really not liking the reports that Rubio is negotiating with Salvador for the return of one they deported.
No. It'll be 10,000 times worse than the constant howling of the lie "even the government admitted he was wrongfully deported!" It will completely destroy any trust conservatives have that Trump has built. It will be a total win for the left. And he'll completely destroy any chance of future deportations. I really fear that the Uniparty has finally gotten their hooks into just enough of the right people in the administration to stall, delay, misdirect and scuttle any further advance of Trump's agenda. And one of them is now trying to sell this deal with the malicious lie that a little retreat here will lead to big gains later. A false compromise as embarrassingly naive and destructive as Reagan's amnesty deal. Posted by: People's Hippo Voice at June 03, 2025 10:29 AM (uJ9KI) 206

The original on-stage 1964 Felix was . . . Art Carney, famous in the previous decade as Ed Norton. Jack Lemmon played him in the film with Walter Matthau re-creating his role as Oscar. Then came Tony Randall, who made the character a lot more fussy, which was even funnier.
There was a remake a few years ago with Matthew Perry as Oscar and some actor I don't know as Felix, and it was as unfunny as you might imagine. Perry might have made a better Felix if they hadn't wanted the character to seem gay. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at June 03, 2025 10:49 AM (omVj0) 258

Wiki on Tony Randall:
"Randall was married to his high school sweetheart, Florence Gibbs,[20] from 1938 until her death from cancer on April 18, 1992. They had no children. On November 17, 1995, at the age of 75, he married 25-year-old Heather Harlan,[21] an understudy from the production of The School for Scandal in which Randall was starring at National Actors Theatre; the ceremony was officiated by Rudy Giuliani.[22] They lived in a Manhattan apartment and bought a vacation apartment in Key Biscayne, Florida, in 2003. The couple had two children, Julia, born on April 11, 1997, and Jefferson, born on June 15, 1998, and remained married until Randall's death in May 2004.[23]" Doesn't sound gay to me. Girl in a Courtyard, Algiers, Philippe Pavy, 1886
Wikipedia, in part, "The painting was one of a series of paintings Pavy produced after he traveled in North Africa in the 1880s. It is currently in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.[1]" It's a nice painting; again, pretty colors, beautiful detailing & highlighting. (However, posing was probably arduous and the rather fair skinned young women looks like she'd like to kick a pigeon or two.) Would like to see the other paintings in the series & would consider hanging the current offering. Thanks. Posted by: L - No nic, another fine day at June 03, 2025 10:58 AM (NFX2v)
