With yet another failed Starship test this week, in which the ambitious heavy rocket exploded once again, you might reasonably suspect that luck has finally run out for SpaceX. But this degree of failure during a development process isn’t actually unusual, according to Wendy Whitman Cobb, a space policy expert with the School of Advanced Air and Space Studies, especially when you’re testing new space technology as complex as a large rocket. What's this "School of Advanced Air and Space Studies" bullshit? Was no one available from Starfleet Academy to offer wise and experienced commentary on this matter? George Takei has spoken of all that he learned and experienced at Starfleet Academy. Does it not exist? Did he lie? Posted by: Krebs v Carnot: Epic Battle of the Cycling Stars (TM) Imprison! Posted by: fluffy at June 01, 2025 05:42 AM (AN2gy) The not talked about not-so-secret is that all Chinese students here are connected in some way to the CCP. There is no way they could ever get permission to go to school in the US if they weren't. Either their parents are good party members or they becomede facto spies with their families as hostage. People really have forgotten what communism, and by extension, communist countries, are all about. But I guess it's because of the one thing they adore about communism: Control. Evening to the Sunday toilers, morning to those of us just waking up. 'Tis Sunday once again.
Extra charges? I ran across that last night. I was low on cash and hadn't hit the ATM on the way, so I was forced to use a credit card at our favorite diner last night. There was and extra charge of about $1.09. Minimal, yes, but it came as a surprise and reminded me why I pay cash so often nowadays. I need to go work out. Posted by: FenelonSpoke If you can access your email on your phone, like thru a web browser interface, you can long-press on the image and get the "save to photos" option on an iphone. If your email provider's web client prevents that somehow, you can hit the buttons on both sides of the phone simultaneously to take a screenshot, then crop it down to just the image. If you can't access your email account on your phone, search "email to mms text" to find out how to text yourself by sending an email, and do that. Fen, I've sent photos from the phone to the computer, but never the other way. If yours is a PC, you could connect the phone to the computer with a cable. Save the pic from the email to a folder on your computer. Then in Windows Explorer (press the Windows key + E to bring it up), you should be able to copy the photo from the folder on your computer to the folder on the phone where pictures reside.
I say "If yours is a PC," as connecting my phone to my Mac does not show the phone as a device on its version of Windows Explorer. I have to connect them via Bluetooth. Posted by: FenelonSpoke at June 01, 2025 06:01 AM (4CknB) If your computer is a Mac you can do an Airdrop. If it’s a PC the easiest thing would be to setup email on your iPhone, open the email, and save it like in my previous post. Although you can setup Windows to sync with an iPhone in an app, it’s generally only useful for receiving text messages and taking calls. Posted by: SpeakingOf at June 01, 2025 06:10 AM (6ydKt) 64

Fen, I wouldn’t be too worried about dealing with email spam on a phone,
It’s actually pretty easy to “Mark as Junk” on any spam message on an iPhone. The email will disappear to a Junk/Spam folder and future emails from the same source will go to that folder automatically. Of course, the caveat is that spam never ends and you’ll see it all again eventually. It’s really convenient not to have to go to the computer for emails, though. The pond renovation is taking shape and we finally have significant visual progress. Todays effort is to trench for and then lay in the supply hose for the waterfall and the overflow drain, and get the drain box interfaced with the French drain. Tomorrow we have another couple of tons of stone and gravel to move off the street and a yard of topsoil to finish building the berms and stabilizing the edges. I told her husband and daughter that I was representing many of her friends from Ace of Spades. I told her daughter we trusted Jewells45 with our secret identities and our credit cards for her art. And I told them both stories of Jewells45 that made them cry. For example, one time going to Corsicana we were stuck in traffic, so she told me the real story of how she captured her husband, the love of her life. Emma, Mr. Bassman, and Creeper were there as well. We all had a late lunch at the Italian venue where, less than a year ago, we had a MoMeet with Jewells45 and sorta local Morons. Morning peeps. Speaking of early IT, I've told this story here before, but it's still kinda' cute.
Back in high school my dad spent a small fortune on an Apple IIe. He also got an external floppy drive (so there were 2) and a dot matrix printer. Probably a small fortune back then, but he was a data analyst working for one of those 3-letter FedGov joints. Anyway, we learned how to use the word processor, whatever it was, and I did a paper on it for one of my classes. Had to be 3 pages, typed. So, I turned in a 3 page printed paper and got an F on it. Teacher tells me I didn't write it, a computer did. I explained I did type all the words in myself, but she refused to believe it. Took my parents the better part of an hour to explain how this all works to her. I don't think she ever really bought into it. I got a C on the paper, which I though was unfair. In 1977, Pournelle was shown the program and decided it would help his productivity by making it easier to produce a final manuscript without requiring a complete retyping of edited pages." Electric Pencil remained on the market into the 1980s, including a version for the IBM PC in 1983. Posted by: fd at June 01, 2025 08:25 AM (vFG9F) 173

I remember using a program called First Choice somewhere around the late 80's. It had a word processor, spreadsheet, and database software.
I thought it was pretty good for it's time. Posted by: Florida Peasant at June 01, 2025 08:30 AM (Lo97M) 180

Today in many liturgical churches we celebrate Ascension Sunday, the day Jesus was taken up into heaven. Here is a prayer for Ascension Sunday by St. Bernard of Clairvaux, who lived from 1090-1153, and who founded the Cistercian order of monks:
To complete your seamless robe, and so complete our faith, you ascended through the air into the heavens, before the very eyes of the apostles. In this way, you showed you are Lord of all, and are the fulfillment of all creation. This from that very moment every human being and every living creature should bow at your name. And in the eyes of faith, we can see that all creation proclaims your greatness. Yes, an airbase in Siberia. Couple of drones, exact number unknown. Sounds like Ukraine wants to lose some more territory. Or all of it.

-------- Reports are that Ukraine used 40+ FPV drones to hit about 3-4 Russian airbases. Targets appeared to be heavy bombers. Putin's gonna' be pissed. Posted by: Martini Farmer at June 01, 2025 08:51 AM (Q4IgG) 194

When I was in school for computers/office work in early 1988, we had green-screen PCs and learned WordStar, WordPerfect 4.1 (I think it was that version), a certain amount of DOS (or maybe that was me going beyond the classwork), IBM's DisplayWrite, and DBase III. As well as learning how to touch-type on electric typewriters, how to write a good resume and cover letter, how to compose business letters, and how to interview.
Then I landed my first job in the office world -- and they were almost the only department on campus who used MS Word for DOS 5.0. I took the manual and ran with it. Before long I was doing mail-merge and writing macros. Heady days. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at June 01, 2025 08:56 AM (omVj0) 198

Good hits on the actual aircraft. Was surprised to see the actual runway intact (expected serious cratering) until I read it was done by drones, then it made sense. "And China is saber rattling." Oh goodie. Posted by: Grumpy and Recalcitrant at June 01, 2025 08:58 AM (O7YUW) 202

>>>AI agents tasked with running a simple vending machine business act like petulant children, declare bankruptcy for no reason, and try to call the FBI over $2 business fees that they have previously agreed to.
If this was something that really happened, it would be interesting to know about. But as it is, it's just a simulation. Some doofi program a computer to do some stupid things; it does those stupid things. We should just yawn. Posted by: Anon Y. Mous at June 01, 2025 10:42 AM (p4nXC) 209
