Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Gun Thread: 1st June and June 1st Edition!![]() FUNdamentals Last week I posed the following question: So fundamentals. I advocate focusing on one of four fundamentals, stance, grip, sight alignment and trigger pull/squeeze/press/manipulation every time you're at the range. Assuming you're not focusing on fundamentals, as I suspect many of you are not, it begs the question; precisely what are you focusing on? Anything? Anything at all? Please let us know in the comments.Given the resultant paucity of responses, I am left with no alternative but to assume "you people" are, for the most part, not focusing on anything at the range. So I will ask you again; what in the ever-loving hell is going through your mind when you're blazing away at the range, if you are not focusing on fundamentals each and every time you yank on the trigger? Guns of the Horde This week our pal Ed L saves us from another week of Weasel's lame-o content! ![]() ![]() The Heckler & Koch (H&K) CC9 micro compact 9mm pistol is a new (fall 2024) entry in the small, concealed carry 9mm pistol market. H&K is a late entrant for this crowded market, trailing well behind its competitors. H&K says the CC9 has been in development for nearly seven years because of H&K&'s rigorous testing requirements, which is why it's taken so long to get the CC9 to market. Is the CC9 worth the wait and the relatively high ($699MSRP) price H&K wants for it? ![]() ![]() The CC9 comes in a soft case with two compartments. The first holds the pistol and a spare magazine. The second has space for more spare magazines, the "operators manual," spare backstrap, and a lock.A quick look at the CC9 shows that right out of the box, the CC9 has full ambidextrous controls (slide stop, magazine release). H&K fans might be disappointed with the use of button magazine releases vice the H&K standard paddle magazine release, but there's no doubt that button magazine releases are far more popular in the US market. The CC9 comes with a very short section of Picatinny rails on the front dust cover. The CC9 has a trigger safety and an internal firing pin safety to stop negligent discharges due to dropping a loaded pistol. Unlike most other micro-9 pistols in its class, the CC9 comes with adjustable backstraps. The CC9 ships with a "normal" size backstrap installed. If you have larger hands or long fingers, you're well-advised to replace them with the "large" size backstrap. It will significantly improve your grip on the CC9. ![]() ![]() ![]() This CC9 shipped with one 10 round flush fit magazine and one 12 round extended magazine. The 10-round magazine improves concealment, but the 12-round magazine gives you just a little bit extra grip space for your pinky finger. This small change makes for a noticeable improvement in the shooting experience. The CC9 is still controllable using the ten-round magazine. But the 12-round magazines are a bit more shooter friendly. The front sight is a large tritium lit dot, while the rear sight is a blacked out square notch. The CC9 uses a large, easy to use takedown lever. The takedown lever has a magazine disconnector, making it impossible to move he takedown lever until the magazine is removed and the slide locked to rear. Rotate the lever and hit the slide release to remove the slide from the frame. There' no need to pull the trigger to disassemble the CC9 for cleaning. ![]() ![]() ![]() The CC9 comes optics ready with the plate in front of the rear sights. Most of H&K's testing involved feeding the CC9 a wide range of 9mm ammunition types to ensure the CC9 can reliably feed most 9mm ammunition types. My testing used three different types of ammunition. Here are pictures of the groups I shot with each.124 grain Federal Syntech. The first target is a 10-yard target shot with both hands and a 12-round magazine. Second photo is a 7-yard target fired with the strong hand only using the 10-round magazine. ![]() This target is for 124 grain +P ammo. ![]() This target shows the results for 147 grain Federal HST at 10 yards. Thanks to its trigger, the CC9 is capable of good accuracy at 7 and 10 yards. Felt recoil is significant, but well within what should be expected for pistols within its class. The slide release was stiff to operate but does appear to have improved after firing the first 50 rounds. I experience no malfunctions with any of the ammo I fired so far. So, is the H&K CC9 worthy of making it to your short list as a potential purchase? If you're a lefty, have large hands, want something with H&K's reputation for reliability, or prefer a handgun that doesn't make you pull the trigger to disassemble it for cleaning, the CC9 might fit the bill for you.Very nicely done! All I can say is my daughter chose wisely as he gave me a box pressed Carrillo Encore Majestic. He told me later is as rated at 96 points in Cigar Aficionado in 2022. I believe it. The Majestic comes together with immaculately detailed flavor that ranges from oak and tea to a slight background of caramel. I also caught some orange-like hints. None of these are overpowering and there is little initial taste. The light is easy and the ash burns evenly. The product is a rich, almost dense smoke that is aromatic and pleasant. The Encore features all Nicaraguan tobacco that's been aged and married in tercios together for two years. (Tercios, or bundles of tobacco held together by royal palm leaves and rope. I didn't know this.) The result is something I've never smoked before and I discovered a balance and smoothness I seldom find in a cigar. The first third of the Encore was a simple introduction to the cigar and the tastes ebbed and flowed a bit. Nothing bad, just interesting. The second third began to mellow with some creaminess starting to develop that not only softened the profile, but add subtlety. It finishes the same way. Hard core cigar smokers might find the Encore too mild, although it is rated in the medium range. It is an easy cigar to smoke and I think it is worth the $10 or so cost. Smoke it to the last inch, and you will find yourself sorry it has ended. Excellent, Diogenes! Thank you! Thank you very much! The brick & mortar/online divide exists with cigars, as with guns, and most consumer products, with respect to price. As with guns - since both are "persecuted industries", basically - I make a conscious effort to source at least some of my cigars from my local store(s). It's a small thing, but the brick & mortar segment for both guns and tobacco are precious, and worth supporting where you can. And if you're lucky enough to have a good cigar store/lounge available, they're often a good social event with many dangerous people of the sort who own scary gunz, or read smart military blogs like this one. -rhomboid Anyone have others to include? So Weasel, anything burning tonight? Pondering which victim to pick out of the tupperdor and go burn it on the porch while absorbing gunz stuff here. Diogenes, wow! Great review. Have to look up the details. I know that Carrillo stick was cigar of the year a few years back. Evening folks, no range report. Spent the past two weeks serving my civic duty and also trying to squeeze a couple hours of work in. :-)

Good afternoon. Thanks again, Weasel, for the thread.
As for fundamentals, draw, press toward target, pull trigger, checking for any "diving into the shot" nonsense. When on the rifle, make sure nothing is wobbly and I don't slowly let the rifle creep forward from shot to shot. Controlled breathing, squeeze off the shot and, hopefully, I've just put another round through the same hole. And to the range yesterday and focused on a new grip technique taught to me by a guy who should be a professional instructor. He’s awesome.
Anyway, he had me pressing my palms together and pulling my elbows in slightly to steady the pistol instead of squeezing with my hands and fingers. He had my thumbs up higher than I’m used to as well. I shot well. And my hands and wrists were not jolted. Posted by: nurse ratched at June 01, 2025 07:09 PM (8TJgL) 20

We got to the range with full contingent DMV MGC today.
Good shooting. Good people. Took Sra blasters Kimber CDS9 out for its maiden voyage. Some teething issues it needs lube. Slide won't go all the way back in battery sometimes. Oddly like swa's Kimber Aegis. Also stupid green coated ammo is still stupid. Two rounds got stuck in the chamber at different times. Had some issues with zeroing the dot. It came with iron sights and probably should have shot it that way first but put the dot on. I have not had one be as far off from the boresight laser as this. Not sure why. We got it dialed in fairly well but not enough loctite it came loose and lost zero. BUT - shoots very nice! Even with the dot off target the groups were quite tight. The all metal gun absorbed recoil better and did not tire Sra blasters wrist which was the desired outcome. Needs to go back with bench rest to zero but it seems like a good addition to the laager. Actually Ben Had according to cigar experts box-pressing can/does alter the flavor experience. Don’t axe me to explain - though clearly it’s how the burn proceeds, ratio of wrapper to filler (higher in box-pressed), etc.

Why manufacturers continue to make modern 1911s with a smooth front on the grip puzzles me, as nowadays it would just need one more stop at a CNC station to fix the problem, but they do. I Believe I have singlehandedly kept the Pachmayr company in business, buying their rubber wrap around 1911 grips, to fix the issue. This model had a "sale" price shown. Quickly checking my other favorite online retailers I found it was out of stock elsewhere. I am awash in 1911s, and have no earthly need for another one, let alone a full size, steel frame, 45 ACP model. So of course I bought it. Finishing the order, I went back to the website to check on something, and found I had gotten the last one in stock. Bawahahaha! Posted by: Idaho Spudboy at June 01, 2025 07:46 PM (GM4rl) 69

So, quick drop in before dogs monopolize my night.
I've been getting light primer strikes with my 'new' (not new at all, unknown round count) G26 upper and my G30, which WAS my EDC but has now been demoted. I did a detailed clean, paying close attention to the striker channel. After the clean, the G26 run 100 rounds with no light primers. The G30...no, had 3 light primer strikes in 20 rounds of Fiocci 230 gr FMJ. Not amused. I have a new striker spring ordered, so going to replace that and see if it fixes the issue. I hope so. The G30 is easier to carry than the G21 and is almost more accurate, if that's possible. Posted by: Mark Andrew Edwards, buy ammo, food, water at June 01, 2025 07:47 PM (xcxpd) 72

If anything, just having your feet solidly under you and drawing and firing seems to be more important than any 'stance'. Exceptions granted for those who's EDC includes .45 ACP, .357 Mag or .44 mag. @Duncanthrax I shot Ed Ls CC9 back to back with my 365 XL which is a flat trigger gun, and shot it a few weeks back against a 365. I would say that it is better overall to include trigger over the regular 365 and on par with the XL. YMMV.
Posted by: blaster at June 01, 2025 07:43 PM Good to know, thanks! I would have expected it to be slightly better, but not hugely. RMBS, Hands down, the 6.5 Creedmoor is the better round for long range shooting. At least out to 1,000 yards.
308 just isn't as efficient at those distances. Also, recoil from the 6.5 is much easier to handle versus 308. Posted by: blake - semi lurker in marginal standing (tT6L1) at June 01, 2025 07:56 PM (tT6L1) 89

Creedmoors are more sporty to spot. The .308 boys were sucking air @ 1300 yds at the Gunsite advanced precision rifle course and my partner and I with 6.5's went on and played past 1500. Thinking about adding a new long range rifle to my collection. I don't shoot long range often, and not beyond 1,000 yds, so this is basically just a fun gun. What are the Horde's thoughts on 6.5 Creedmore v. 308?
Posted by: RedMindBlueState I am by no means an expert or even that knowledgeable on long range shooting. I have a bolt action 30-06 that I have shot out to 500 yards. A former co-worker WAS pretty good at long range shooting. From his experience and training with a retired Marine Gunny: 6.5 Creedmore is pretty lousy outside of 1000 yards. The wind does a lot of funny tricks with it. .308 is better, but again a lot of it depends on the rifle. He used .30 Win Mag, which is a pretty powerful round. He bought an $800 bolt action rifle for a .30 Win Mag cartridge, then had some specialist gun smiths make a great shooter's rifle out of the action for $5000. He could hit steel targets at a mile. Posted by: Rodrigo Borgia at June 01, 2025 08:18 PM (qpyNK) (2 of 2) The last "prize money" awarded to ships' crews in the USN was in the waning days of peace in November 1941. USS Omaha and USS Somers boarded a US flagged vessel that turned out to be the German blockade runner SS Odenwald carrying nearly 4,000 tons of rubber. Sailing under "false" colors is a no-no and is, under the law of the sea, tantamount to piracy. Although US and Germany were still at peace, the USN task group commander reported the capture of SS Odenwald as a "suspected slaver" whose cargo was forfeit to the USN. Although the court case wasn't resolved until 1947 (thanks to WWII), each member of the boarding party got a bit over $3k. Each member of the ships' crews not part of the boarding party got an extra two months pay and allowances. Posted by: Ed L at June 01, 2025 08:44 PM (BCwQW) 166

134 Here's a question: suppose you set up a free-lance operation with the intent of whacking Somali pirates and take their shit from them. What are the modern legalities of that? Killing the pirates would seem to be legal, but what about the loot? I believe under classic English martial law, any goodies on the pirate ship were considered to be salvage/fair prize, but I could be wrong about that. Posted by: Rodrigo Borgia at June 01, 2025 08:18 PM (qpyNK) ----- They don't have any shit, that's why they're pirates. As far as their captured ships and crews -- the only lreal value these things have is their ransoms. No real resale value in the modern world. Western, non-criminal people can't ransom crews, the cargoes are spoiled or rusted from sitting in the Somali heat, and the ships have many unsightly stains and cigarette burns. And what's that terrible smell? Shooting the pirates to pieces as they approach is where the money's at, but that job is already taken. Opinions?
Posted by: davidt at June 01, 2025 07:27 PM (i0F8b) I have a S&W Model 36, and it works great. Why spend $900 when you can get the quintessential pocket .38 Special for less than half of that on the used market? And you can shoot +P out of it and beat the ballistics of a 9mm. 98 The Ruger LCP Max bumps capacity to 10 rounds, but there were reports of teething problems when they came out. I haven't had an ear to the ground to know if they've been resolved.
Posted by: Duncanthrax at June 01, 2025 08:01 PM (0sNs1) The first time I took mine out, the side of the frame started flexing enough for the trigger bar to come loose and result in a dead trigger. Sent it in to Ruger's Mayodan facility, replaced the trigger, bar and frame and turned it around in about a day. No issues the last time I shot it. No range report from me, perhaps in a month I can. Instead my medical report is I am slowly and painfully healing from a closed fracture with a platinum pin in my thigh bone. Thanks to Weasel & company for this thread. My long delayed report should include 5 30.06 military rifles, a repaired? .22 pistol and S&W M-60 .38 Special.

Hey, Weasel--
Put me in the "I'm always thinking about fundamentals" category--any time I pick up one of my pistols: at the range, or doing dry fire at home with a laser cartridge. I mean, how else can you improve your marksmanship? Like any other complex skill--my other big personal interest is playing music--it's all about mastering fundamentals. And mastering fundamentals is an endless pursuit; there's no upper limit on how good you can get. The cool thing is that the better you get the more you can enjoy doing it.
