Pet Thread - May 31, 2025 [TRex]

20250531-airedale-terriers-smiling-together.jpg

TRex knows what you're thinking. "Too early for the Hobby Thread but the Gardening Thread has already been posted and I don't have anything more to say about radishes or asparagus soup."

Ace of Spades has you covered. Welcome to a bonus substitute Pet Thread! With very little planning or forethought, let's enjoy some time talking about our favorite animal family members. KT is dodging helicopters while escaping from the hospital, so we'll take that as a positive sign. Hopefully, she'll restore order to the Saturday mid-day Ace of Spades thread program soon.

But in the meantime, what Pet Thread theme would be worthy of the Ace of Spades stage? Let's talk terriers!

Are you wise in the ways of the Airedale Terrier?

TRex has a soft spot for terriers in general and Airedales in particular. Smart, charismatic, expressive, curious, loyal, and playful. In other words, they're a handful. Had two growing up and always excited to see them.

How can you say no to that face??!!

***

Who among the Horde has had terriers as a part of their family?

An interweb search of AKC dog registration data in the US shows the top ten terrier breeds in 2024 include:

Yorkshire Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, West Highland White Terrier (Westie), Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier, Jack Russell Terrier (Parson Russell Terrier),
Bull Terrier, Border Terrier, Miniature Schnauzer, Scottish Terrier (Scottie), and Airedale Terrier.

***

Because I can't resist:

Does any among the Horde have an Airedale or had an Airedale? Does any among the Horde know people that breed Airedales? TRex is available for short term dog duty!

***

Let's talk puppy power (or other pets) until Hobby Thread time. Leave the politics or religious debates outside the kennel.

13 Afternoon, Pet Folken,

I've never been a dog person, as in "owned one." As a kid I loved Lassie and Rin Tin Tin from TV and thought I would have loved to have one. As a grownup, though, I realize the work involved in training and walking a dog. It'd be fun to take a dog with me places when I run errands of a morning. But I'm a cat person through and through.

I'll admit there are dog breeds which are very handsome, such as the aforementioned collie (and miniature collie) and German shepherd; and Corgis are very cute; and I like the way Schipperkes look, like miniature black GSDs. (When I read the French word for "werewolf," loup-garou, I think of them.)
But puppies are pretty high-energy, I think. And I have no way to live with a dog in an apartment now anyway.

Cats I know and love and (basically) understand.

14 Guy in the properties front house got a blue heeler puppy. Cute girl, very stubborn. She was outside crying like a baby to be let in. Mr Senegal learned the baby in his first home would get attention crying, and used to parrot a baby cry. Cracked me up when he answered the puppy "waaaaaa!".

Someone in the Prayer Thread mentioned water treadmills to exercise dogs. Our veterinary chiropractor has two, one for dogs and one for horses. Diana had used them on rehab for her illiopsoas tear. She used to wade through 14 inces of water, about up to her elbows.

I once tried to work out how much more work she put in using a water treadmill versus a regulat one. The answer was: it's complicated.

The horse treadmill is out in their barn. One day, Diana was having her workout when a horse was brought in for an adjustment. It was clear he was in discomfort. I could see that I didn't want me or Diana anywhere near it. When her session ended, we left by the back door.

20 Oh, and a tip of the chapeau to TRex for doing extra duty today. I hope KT will be back to health soon.

My feline thugs are doing well. Little Dagny La Siberienne has gotten over her sudden burst of near-affection for me, and while she sits and sleeps in the living room with us, she's no longer sharing the bed with me.

Neither is Stirling; he has suddenly formed an attachment to a spot on the floor right outside the bedroom, so that I have to be careful when I go in and out in dim light. This morning as I was talking to the credit card people about a mysterious charge, he had to be right there bumping me with is head and squeaking. (Turned out the charge was legit: my purchase of flea treatment for them about a month ago.)

35 Lucky no allergies here. We've mostly had mutts. We did have a Great Pyrenees that someone had to rehome. If you ever watched the Loony Toons with the sheep guardian dog and the wolf clocking in, Mia reminded me of that. Especially in the heat of summer she'd come in and nap in front of the AC, but come dusk her alarm went off and it was let me out, I have to start my security rounds. Used to take her for a walk past a place that had sheep and goats and she'd look at them and you could tell she thought she should have a proper flock but she settled for protecting our horses.

Come to think of it, that was how I came to adopt the late black Wolf cat. Not that I knew his humans, or would have liked them; they turned him out to fend for himself when they got evicted, and he was going door to door for handouts when I invited him in. They didn't even try to ask their neighbors if they could take him. Bastards.

He had a much better setup with me.

Not real big on keeping himself clean. Killed every rodent that dared to cross his path and some that he sought out on his own. Brought me at least two dead squirrels and killed bunnies, too. The bunnies he ate. Fair Dinkum Jazzman Louie Armstrong, but his ears didn't go up in time for him to be a show dog, so he was just Louie.

Now, thank God, he is much better so I thought maybe we can get back to him jumping up there. So I opened the back and led him back there. He looked at me like, "Where the Hell are my steps?" So I got the stairs and he climbed in. So I guess the stairs will be a permanent thing.

86 Once upon a time some neighbors had a wire haired terrier.

They referred to it as their wire haired terrorist.

90 Shepps was Jewells45 favorite work place. They sheltered older dogs.

Just got back from her Celebration of Life near Lee Summit Missouri

I told her husband and daughter that I was representing many of her friends from Ace of Spades. I told her daughter we trusted Jewells45 with our secret identities and our credit cards for her art.

And I told them both stories of Jewells45 that made them cry.
For example, one time going to Corsicana we were stuck in traffic, so she told me the real story of how she captured her husband, the love of her life.

Emma, Mr. Bassman, and Creeper were there as well.

Much appreciated. And prayers for KT's healing and continued recovery.

FenSpouse and I help feed a colony of spayed and neutered cats that live near a guys house in our community. Today there was a new cat. It looks like this- a Norwegian Forest Cat, but I don't life in Norway or a Forest. I hope somebody didn't toss it out. It's gorgeous:

I'm glad you and some others represented the ASHQ horde at her Celebration of Life
It was always a pleasure to hear her speak of Shep's place and her work there .. she obviously loved the dogs.

98 I gotta admit that one thing I found impressive last week when hiking the Lighthouse Trail at Palo Duro Canyon was seeing a dude hiking it - walking a basset hound the whole way.

101 Over the years we've had 6 Airedales. Great family dogs. Good with kids my daughter slept with 2 of them until she was a teenager. When she was little she could walk One of them at a heal position and Asta would take baby steps to stay in place and wouldn't leave her side even for a cat or squirrel. Very protective of my wife and daughter. Watchful of strangers and not aggressive until a threat was perceived and then the posture changed totally. No barking but anyone looking knew they were serious.

Loved to pull pranks. One used to steal a shoe when I got up in the morning on the weekend and run all over the house so I didn't go back to bed. My wife can home and found 2 of them sitting on the dinning room table which had the best view of the front yard. All of them loved the ocean and beach.

One thing potential owners need to know is they are incredibly smart and stubborn They all like nothing better than out thinking you.

105 We have had two. One was a female who was born old and calm. Although she chewed up two German Shepherds who came into the yard when our kids were outside. The other was “Tank”. The largest of the litter, topping off at 110lbs. He was hardheaded! My wife would have to grab him by the jowel, twist his head to the ground and sometimes put her foot on his muzzle to get his to submit. Great dogs!

107 My best Bud is an American Staffordshire Terrier. Rebel the Dog has been on the pet thread before. He is a Very Good Boy! Since I got him as a pup, it’s been an amazing ride!! Frankly, to me, he is the Best Dog in the World. Thanks to the Pet Thread! Rick and Rebel the Dog

108 We have a 10 month old Irish Terrier puppy (like a smaller version of an Airedale but pure red, no black). She is a lot of fun. First terrier we've ever had - only hunting dogs before. Not as biddable as those sweet natured Weimaraners and Labs but so joyful and energetic - we really love her.
