I had to jump off a Baker scaffold once when working on a raised computer floor that was just being put in. They hadn't installed the cut pieces on the perimeter and I was working on the ceiling when one of the wheels dropped 18" very fast. Jumped clear and wasn't hurt. Wouldn't want to do that in my dotage today.

Posted by: Zip Code Moves The Mail. at May 30, 2025 10:43 PM (G5+As) Honestly, no. When they converted their venerable flathead to overhead valves, they placed the valves too close together, and they almost invariably crack the head between the valve seats. The bore is only three inches. A good-running 170 is a sweet little engine, but their durability is sub-wonderful. Studebaker should have designed an OHC Hemi head with 4 little valves per cylinder. It would not have cost much more than the OHV head they designed, and the rev potential, and volumetric efficiency would have been much better. Honestly, no. Hi. Just a request for prayers. MindfulWebworker went in for a scheduled scan of his stomach today but they found a blood clot in his lungs. So he is in the hospital. Seems fortuitous they found it. Prayers for his health, resolution of all issues, and good doctors and nurses are appreciated. Also, I thought you all might want to know.
It's been a long day. I could sure use some good memes... oh look! Posted by: Sugar Plum fairy at May 30, 2025 11:43 PM (zvg93) Been there. The hospital's the place to be. Heparin, the whole works. It'll take a little bit before the doctors are comfortable the clot has dissipated. Then the lungs excercises at home to build them back up. It is serious, no doubt. But he's where he needs to be. Shipping prices can get very sporty.
For a model kit recently bought from Australia, EMS shipping cost was $21. Maybe it's an FWP, but I hate with the blazing hate of a thousand suns sellers who inflate prices with BS "shipping" costs. I wanted to buy some repair parts from a tool manufacturer. Their prices were already higher than the same thing from Ebay or Amazon and I was mostly OK with that to be sure I was getting good parts but then they wanted like $35 for shipping a total of 2 ounces worth of stuff. General broad generational viewpoints kind of work like this for me. Boomers grew up as everything got better and better and they think ideal is possible. Gen X know old school pre internet stuff but expect steady decline. Millennials grew up in internet world but didn't get the full warp. Younger than that grew up in fully internet world so unless they don't do modern world their culture is basically ADHD with an emphasis on weird click seeking behavior. Don't get upset, no general behavior thing applies to anyone in particular.

This is not religious freedom. This is a parallel legal system embedded in America’s most sensitive medical zone, hiding behind tax-exempt protections while preparing for a clash of civilizations. Sure, but we were pushing for war with both Japan and Germany. I’m not saying “Those poor countries, we were the bad guys”, but FDR wanted a war. I don’t care what happens to Europeans or Asians. Not my problem. Posted by: Disinterested FDA Director at May 31, 2025 01:18 AM (yd2/I) 386

The Nazis and Imperial Japan were obviously evil, but FDR didn’t care about. He refused Jewish refugees. He didn’t order bombing of rail lines to the extermination camp. So...with the Rapex thing, first isn't that going to be really uncomfortable for a woman to wear for an extend amount of time? I assume a rapist isn't going to give you time to grab something out of your purse and insert it.
But then if a rapist does get his lil rapist stuck it in isn't he going to get soft and therefore able to get out quickly? Between the not so fun experience and the blood loss I suspect it is hard to keep an erection. Of course the larger point is that South Africa has now gotten worse then even most pessimists thought it would... Posted by: 18-1 at May 31, 2025 01:44 AM (t0Rmr) 398

The most likely result of the US staying out of WWI is a negotiated settlement favoring the Germans in 1918 when both sides are exhausted but the allies more so. The Krauts then get a bunch of colonies from the French that occupy their Germanic attentions for decades - good for the US, bad for the Africans living there. Russia still goes communist though, and how the cold war shapes up is anyone's guess. Posted by: 18-1 at May 31, 2025 01:51 AM (t0Rmr) 403

Well, past midnight here. Went down a rabbit hole watching Garage 54 on youtube. Bunch of crazy Russians doing unspeakable things to junkyard Ladas. Tonight, they turned the engine upside-down, and made the car drive. Then they drove around to other mechanic shops in the complex. "My car smokes badly. I think it needs valve seals." It was a hoot.
