Colorado gray wolf update:
Colorado Parks and Wildlife kills grey wolf in Pitkin County after attacks on livestock https://is.gd/RHPtPU After four separate attacks on cattle in an 8 day span, killing 2 and injuring 4, wildlife officials described these events as "unfortunate and rare", leading some to wonder what definition of 'rare" they are using. Following the first two attacks a strongly worded letter was placed in the wolf's personnel file. After the third attack the director of VR (Vulpine Resources) had an in-person counseling session with the wolf. After the fourth attack, the decision to take "lethal management action" was made and the 'oo's a bad girl, eh? Posted by: muldoon at May 31, 2025 08:04 AM (/iMjX) 37

I had another fun evening of parking cars at the county fair. People are idiots. Due to the rain on Thursday evening, the parking fields were still a big mess and people didn't want to listen to the parking attendants who advised them that they may not be able to get their cars out of the field. Several vehicles got stuck because their drivers ignored this advice. Posted by: "Perfessor" Squirrel at May 31, 2025 08:04 AM (GlyvH) 38

I do not care much for coffee. It all taste water trickled over burnt shit (figurative as I do not know for a fact what burnt shit taste like).
Then I met a couple of people who know their coffee. Throwing out various coffee beans because they 'taste like shit' until they get the good stuff. Even one lady who went through three coffee makers in one day because they make coffee that 'taste like shit'. Have to admit - the coffee they made was quite a bit more paletable than the average cup. Come to the conclusion that people who really know their coffee really really do not like coffee and will go through extraordinary efforts to make a cup that doesn't taste like shit. Everybody else knows they just drink it for the caffeine. Posted by: Itinerant Alley Butcher at May 31, 2025 08:10 AM (/lPRQ) 56

Went to Mass on Thursday, as it was Ascension Thursday, 40 days after Easter, and thus a Holy Day of Obligation. The archdiocese, in its dubious wisdom, transferred the obligation to Sunday. Which makes it Ascension Thursday Sunday, which is a bit silly. I went to Confession before Mass. We're lucky in our fossilized parish that Confession is available before every Mass, starting 30 minutes before and going through almost to Communion. Most other parishes (sorry, "Catholic communities") have it for as little as 45 minutes a week for far larger congregations. I've learned that people will usually do the right thing if it's easy to do. If frequent Confession is important - fat chance you'll hear that from the pulpit - facilities should be available for the faithful to do so. As it is, I doubt a significant fraction take Communion without even an examination of conscience. I have a track record of surviving on less than the ideal coffee. In college I couldn't afford much and we couldn't have hot plates in the dorms. My coffee survival ration was instant coffee, black, made with hot tap water. This was long before Starbucks and similar overpriced crap was on every corner, so that wasn't a factor. When I got my first apartment one of the first things I bought was a Faberware Yosemite stove top percolator and a big bag of A and P 8 O'Clock coffee. It felt luxurious.

Liberal Catholic knows they have lost the war. Francis was their great hope, and Parolin was supposed to seal the deal, but they were outmaneuvered. Now there is only anger, because the demographics are decisively against them from here on out. It won't be a question of selecting liberal bishops or cardinals because they are going extinct. Instead, the menu is going to be Novus Ordo in traditional setting (with Latin) or TLM. Posted by: Ace-Endorsed Author A.H. Lloyd at May 31, 2025 08:45 AM (ZOv7s) 161
I’ve had the opportunity to attend various Catholic Churches in different parts of the country. It’s been my experience that younger parishioners are increasingly more conservative and traditional. I have also seen the veils come back along with some of the older practices such as receiving while kneeling. I believe, or at least I pray that Pope Leo is aware of this and that “modernization” of the church is not the way. Rather a return to the traditional ways which provided familiarity, comfort and were more glorifying to God are the way.

Not to kick off another fun episode of Generational Wars, but the same demographics in the electorate also feature within the Catholic clergy. Gen X is much more theologically conservative than the Boomers. This has not had much public impact because it is only recently that Gen X priests have started taking over parishes and moved up into hierarchy, but it is very much underway.
The bad news for Liberal Catholics (not the same as political liberals, btw) is that while Gen X leans more conservative than younger generations in the public as a whole, the succeeding classes of seminarians were even more conservative. The current crop are pretty much itching to dump Vatican II outright. Add in the fact that the liberal diocesan seminaries are all but abandoned while the SSPX and FSSP are bulging at the seams and the future of the Church looks very orthodox.

I think Roberts held back because he wanted "the process" to work, and figured that the cases would eventually get knocked down and the district judges would cool it. He was badly mistaken, and now finds himself in a whirlwind of ever more absurd activism with no idea how to stop it. He's not a leader in any sense of the word, and lacks the conviction to stake out a strong position on his own. I will also say that he probably assumed the Trump would violate the TROs and create a constitutional crisis which he could then adjudicate in the Establishment's favor. That Trump simply used other authorities, or treated the TROs as an individual rather than national ruling completely flummoxed him. Posted by: Ace-Endorsed Author A.H. But I want you to understand that Christ is the head of every man, and the man is the head of a woman, and God is the head of Christ. Every man who has something on his head while praying or prophesying disgraces his head. But every woman who has her head uncovered while praying or prophesying disgraces her head, for it is one and the same as the woman whose head is shaved. For if a woman does not cover her head, have her also cut her hair off; however, if it is disgraceful for a woman to have her hair cut off or her head shaved, have her cover her head. For a man should not have his head covered, since he is the image and glory of God; but the woman is the glory of man. For man does not originate from woman, but woman from man; for indeed man was not created for the woman’s sake, but woman for the man’s sake. Therefore the woman should have a symbol of authority on her head, because of the angels. However, in the Lord, neither is woman independent of man, nor is man independent of woman. For as the woman originated from the man, so also the man has his birth through the woman; and all things originate from God. Judge for yourselves: is it proper for a woman to pray to God with her head uncovered? Does even nature itself not teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a dishonor to him, but if a woman has long hair, it is a glory to her? For her hair is given to her as a covering. But if anyone is inclined to be contentious, we have no such practice, nor have the churches of God. Posted by: 1 Corinthians 11:10-16 at May 31, 2025 09:08 AM (dg+HA) 208

This was probably talked about earlier this week, but I just saw it now. Climate change taxes. Brilliant...
Ian Jaeger @IanJaeger29 Governor Josh Green officially signs the first climate change tax for visitors in US history into law. Tourism in Hawaii is about to decrease massively. X video: https://bit.ly/3T0SMwx Via Grok: The Hawai'i Climate Change tax, also known as the "Green Fee," is a 0.75% surcharge added to the state's existing Transient Accommodations Tax (TAT). Effective January 1, 2026, this increases the total TAT to 11% for visitors staying in hotels, short-term rentals, or cruise ships. Combined with county lodging taxes (3%) and the state’s general excise tax (4.712%), visitors will face a total accommodations tax of nearly 19%. The tax is expected to generate approximately $90–$100 million annually for environmental and climate resiliency projects. I wonder if they estimated the $90-$100 million based on assumptions of decreasing tourism because of the tax. Or if they estimated based on the assumption tourism would stay the same. It's like saying a single Our Father vs a Rosary. Both are forms of prayer, but the latter takes the contemplation to a deeper and more profound level. At least in my experience. I like to pray my Rosaries with Gregorian Chant in the background. Posted by: Ace-Endorsed Author A.H. Lloyd ______ So it's nothing intrinsic to latin? If greek or another ancient language was substituted, would it serve equally? Or for that matter, any foreign language? I will say that if you were not raised Catholic and most of your religious experience was Protestant, the NO will seem like an ancient ritual in comparison.

Does even nature itself not teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a dishonor to him, but if a woman has long hair, it is a glory to her? For her hair is given to her as a covering.”
Excerpted from: 1 Corinthians 11:10-16 One of my favorite books of all time remains Mackay’s “Extraordinary Popular Delusions” etc , and in it he has a full chapter on The Length of Men’s Hair. Not only has there been 2000 years of dissension over this, there have been actual wars fought where this was one of the biggest issues! The Catholic Church was long against the idea of long hair, but after one such war and its associated slaughter, the Pope at the time threw in the towel and said that the Church would no longer take an official position on it. In a typically delightful phrase, Mackay states that “After this, men could be as hairy as bears if they wished, and no longer be in fear for their souls.” Posted by: Tom Servo at May 31, 2025 09:36 AM (i5oKA) 261

He has apparently decided that Latin is bad, kneeling to receive Communion is bad, priests praying the old traditional prayers while putting on vestments is bad, crucifixes and missal stands on altars is bad, and women lectors wearing chapel veils is bad.
Unsurprisingly, he was promoted to bishop by Pope Francis over the objections of Robert Cardinal Prevost (if the interwebs is to be believed)." This bishop is both stupid and arrogant and reflects the same attitude of the media, the left in general and his unlamented sponsor . He can't be unaware that the increasing interest in Catholicism, worldwide, is being fueled by younger people, especially families, and those attracted to the traditional parts of the mass and church rites. If reports are true, those diocese going back to traditional values and observances are thriving in numbers, donations, and attendance. Claiming it was a draft doesn't matter. It was written and only sort of rescinded under scrutiny and pressure. This bozo in a mitre should be replaced before he does more harm. Not that I have an opinion on the matter. Posted by: Dr. Pork Chops & Bacons at May 31, 2025 09:29 AM (g8Ew ![]() --- The Chaldean Catholic Church uses Aramaic in its Mass. It's quite profound. The reason Latin was used rather than Aramaic should be self-evident: the language of the Roman Empire was Latin. Other languages existed and were in use, but if you want to convert the Empire, you use the language of the Empire. Latin is an elegant language and as others have pointed out, one that is no longer evolving in the way English continues to do. Also worth noting: There are 23 other Churches in communion with Rome, each with their own liturgy with deep historical roots, and Pope Leo has expressly urged that these not be updated but preserved to enrich the Church. (Francis has been stirring the pot in India.) Pope Francis had made considerable gains in seeking unity with the Copts and Constantinople, but then fumbled it away with Fiducia Supplicans. Pope Leo may - God willing - be able to close the deal and finally heal the schisms. Posted by: Ace-Endorsed Author A.H. They resented having to use Latin, and I guess wanted to be cool and laid back like the Protestants. My mother is one of them, and disliking Latin was another facet of her rebellion against her parents. This is part of the tension within the Church - the older cultural crowd vs a younger, more orthodox approach. We have a bunch of old people who applaud the musicians after Mass like it's a concert. And shouldn't a common language be used to spread the gospel?
If you think English is a common language, you havent spoken to Brits, let alone the further-flung users of the language. There is a lot of variance in what words mean and how different words in conjunction change each others meanings. Thats why (per Lloyd) Latin being a no-longer evolving language is helpful. Its a lingua franca that crosses time as well as space, or at least better than any current language can. Posted by: Stephen Price Blair at May 31, 2025 10:02 AM (EXyHK) 310

Mizuame sounds like something I could use! I've never found coffee I like. Only tried it 3 times, though. First time was McDonald's coffee in the 70's. Awful stuff! I was in high school, traveling to a speech meet three hours away, in the dead of winter, on a school bus with the heater broken down. We stopped at a McD's. I was half frozen and wanted something hot to drink, but their hot chocolate machine was broken down, so I bought a coffee. Yuck! I swore I would never drink coffee again. Well, I did go on to try it again, decades later, with creamer or other such things. I still haven't found the right blend of coffee and other add-ons -- not that I've tried very hard, lol. It's just easier to drink tea, which I enjoy quite a bit. :-) Posted by: Official Delurker, tagline unknown at May 31, 2025 10:08 AM (V573c) 324

You evangelize in the language where you are, and part of that was teaching the Latin Mass.
When the missionaries reached China in the 1500s, there arose a sharp division in terms of how to reach the Chinese. Mandarin is not a language that lends itself to innovation, particularly in new concepts, and the Christian conception of God was completely foreign. The Jesuits urged that the Church should simply adopt the Chinese religious terms, and then try to redefine them. This was rejected by the rest of the Church, and the option they chose was to instruct converts in Latin, and use that to teach them about God. Later on, when China was opened by the Opium Wars, American missionaries took it upon themselves to translate portions of the Bible in Mandarin, which led to a catastrophic misunderstanding on the part of Hung Hsiu-ch'uan, who declared himself Jesus' Older Brother, and launched the Taiping Rebellion, which ultimately took 50 million lives. Samson was consecrated to God at birth, and one of rules was that he should live by strict (arguably proto-monastic) rules, including crowing his hair out. He then violated those rules one by one and the last one was cutting his hair. The Essenes and St. John the Forerunner lived by these rules. They were not for all of society. That’s not true. The Mass is very regimented and it’s not hard to learn what the various parts mean, particularly if you go multiple times a week. People going to Latin Mass are also more likely to be devoted to learning and memorizing all of the prayers and sections of the liturgy.

What's fascinating is the online comments: almost all of the women, and some men, are absolutely batty about the "gendered" approach - how dare they treat young men differently, teach them skills all girlbosses (implied) should learn, too blah blah blah. *They mention fatherlessness and masculinity being declared "toxic" without also saying the obvious: feminism/current culture blurring gender roles and telling boys they are worthless Posted by: Lizzy at May 31, 2025 10:52 AM (F/B4x) 429

Old man Bush appointed Clarence Thomas . He also appointed David Souter
Bush the Younger appointed Samuel Alito. But also John Roberts. Earl Warren and John Brennan were appointed by Ike Trump gave us Gorsuch , Kavanaugh and ACB Republicans get it right once in a while , Dems don't make mistakes in their SC appointments Posted by: Smell the Glove at May 31, 2025 01:24 PM (9m6M/) Thomas was appointed as a favor to Jack Danforth, who was still somewhat influential within the party, after he retired from the Senate, because he was a minister of some sort. I believe Thomas was on his staff at some point. So it was almost accidental that he was appointed, as it was outside the usual circles from which these picks come. Posted by: Smell the Glove at May 31, 2025 01:24 PM (9m6M/) -------------- I suppose some Repub nominees just hide their lefty tendencies until safely confirmed, and Presidents may not be tough enough on ideological assessments. Some GOP Presidents are themselves McVain lefties. The solution,IMO, is to ask Thomas and Alito who they want in the court. Posted by: Huck Follywood at May 31, 2025 01:34 PM (rDiMt) 619

Not sure we're getting a new thread any time soon, and I won't be around when the pet thread is posted, so I'll leave this here:
I'm trying to acquire a new cat (my sweet boy died last week), using the Petfinder app. It beats going to the local shelters, because they're on the site anyway, and I can contact them through Petfinder before venturing out. Except I'm sending inquiries, and no one is getting back to me. What the F, people. I'm sure you are mostly volunteers, but you have cats, several of them, waiting to be adopted. I'm ready. Get your shit together. Posted by: BurtTC at May 31, 2025 01:45 PM (lH8E4) 632

Dan Bongino literally morphing into a goblin as he spews establishment lies about Epstein was, in fact, on my bingo card for 2025. Posted by: Mister Ghost at May 31, 2025 01:51 PM (TGPs7) Here are our options: 1. Epstein did indeed kill himself, and was not coerced to do so. 2. He was coerced into killing himself. 3. He didn't kill himself, and Bongino is lying. 4. He didn't, and Bongino is parsing words to basically say the FILE shows he did... but that's just based on what's in the file. 5. Whether he did or didn't kill himself, what really happened is considered classified, and Bongino is not allowed to tell the truth. 6. Epstein's not dead. And all best are off. Posted by: Dr. Claw at May 31, 2025 01:59 PM (3wi/L) Yes, because I'm looking for specifics, and I'm too vulnerable to be sure I won't walk out of there with the wrong cat. And I'm not sure there's anyone there, it's more likely the cats on their lists are being fostered elsewhere. Posted by: BurtTC at May 31, 2025 02:05 PM (lH8E4) 650

Greetings, windbag ... Have you tried "olfactory retraining"? ... It's a method for waking up damaged nerves -- sniffing a wide variety of odor-generating elements such as lemons or oranges, flowery perfumes, peanut butter, eucalyptus, rosemary, cinnamon, pine, peppermint, or cloves ... Some people use essential oils but, whatever you use, give it time (a month or two) ... Google "HOW TO RESTORE TASTE AND SMELL AFTER COVID" for other suggestions.
