Hobby Thread - May 31, 2025 [TRex]

20250224-20250222-076A6219.jpg

Welcome hobbyists! Pull up a chair and sit a spell with the Horde in this little corner of the interweb. This is the mighty, mighty officially sanctioned Ace of Spades Hobby Thread. We gave the Ace of Spades Wheel of Hobbies(TM) a spin and it came up with scale modeling!

[Top photo: Have Blue Radar Cross Section Model, US Air Force Museum, Dayton, Ohio]

***

TRex knows what you're thinking. "It has been SOOOO long since we have done a thread on scale modeling and SOOOO many among the Horde are scale modelers. Can we PLEASE periodically do a thread with a scale modeling theme?"

Why yes. Yes we can. The Wheel says so.

But what should we talk about? You're in luck. Our friend Washington Nearsider has been modeling for decades and models at a high level of skill and detail. See examples below. Hopefully, he's reading along and will jump in with thoughts and wisdom and answer questions.

No voice commentary but a LOT of intricate metal lathe work:

We did a golf theme a few weeks ago, so this photo is late (but still too good not to share). Was this standard equipment at early driving ranges?

I was going to put this in an ONT at some point, but then it occurred to me - avian woodworking might qualify as a hobby! If that doesn't work, it still is a great photo and photography qualifies as a hobby. So there.

Are you wise in the ways of the Henry O. Studley tool chest?

20141018-HenryTools.jpg

Piano maker Henry O. Studley designed and built this toolbox. It is about 40 by 20 inches when closed and holds approximately 300 tools. He developed and added new tools over 30 years. The craftsmanship is extraordinary. It has been exhibited at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History.

A work of art itself, the Studley Tool Chest is full of detail, with mother-of-pearl and ivory inlay that speaks to his career as a piano man. The mammoth piece weights 72 lbs when empty and 156 lbs when open, meaning a full squad is needed to move it.

Before dying in 1925, Studley passed this prize possession to a friend. Pete Hardwick, the friend's grandson, held on to the chest and loaned it to the Smithsonian Institute's National Museum of American History in the late 1980s. It was later purchased by a private collector for an undisclosed sum, but if you imagine that just one tool in the set was appraised at $700 in 1993, it surely paid off for Hardwick. The current owner still occasionally lends it to the National Museum of American History. 19th-Century Tool Box Is Meticulously Designed to Hold 300 Tools

Horde-adjacent hobbying in quilt form:

A woman in the complex where Mama Rex lives made this quilt.

20250530-IMG_20250530_190025881.jpg

It is gorgeous. It took her a year and half (admittedly off and on). When finished, she donated it for a raffle and now it has a new home with a delighted new owner.

She's been quilting for decades. How did it start? During a random stop at a used bookstore in New Orleans many years ago, she found a book on quilting. It looked interesting and she thought she could do it. She could and did. The book cost her a dime but sparked years of quilting.

What are you hobbying these days?

As per usual Hobby Thread etiquette, keep this thread limited to hobbying. Your participation does not need to limited to the theme. All hobbying is welcome. However, politics, current events and religious debates can live in threads elsewhere. Play nice. Do not be a troll and do not feed the trolls. Pants, as always, are optional.

Shep's was Jewells45 favorite work place. They sheltered older dogs.

Just got back from her Celebration of Life near Lee Summit Missouri

I told her husband and daughter that I was representing many of her friends from Ace of Spades. I told her daughter we trusted Jewells45 with our secret identities and our credit cards for her art.

And I told them both stories of Jewells45 that made them cry.
For example, one time going to Corsicana we were stuck in traffic, so she told me the real story of how she captured her husband, the love of her life.

Emma, Mr. Bassman, and Creeper were there as well.

7 I've been building model airplanes since Desert Storm. I was eleven, and my dad bought me a 1/72 kit of the F-117, which we'd just shown to the world, to get me started. At some point, the control stick shot off into the carpeting, and was lost. I looked for about three minutes - an eternity in kiddom. I asked him what I should do, and he told me I could keep looking until I found it, or just keep going. "After all," he told me, "nobody but you will ever know it's not there." I obviously kept going. Today, more than 30 years later, it still bothers me.

10 I've been steadily improving since then, and now take custom commissions. I've built specific aircraft which have meaning to the individual, and have safely shipped them across the country. This past Christmas, I gifted to my dad a model of the exact C-47 his dad flew into Normandy during the Invasion, down to the radios and serial number. I don't use decals for the markings, instead cutting my own custom paint masks, which gives me access to any paint scheme. Besides, nothing looks like paint like paint.

30 Washington Nearsider was kind enough to allow me to commission him to build a model for my brother. He built a PBY-5 Catalina, and he made it in the pattern flown by a national hero, Lou Conter, the Pearl Harbor attack survivor, and who flew 'Black Cats'.

The Norwegian or "Weegie" is to me the best looking cat breed out there, even moer than the Siberians I've been living with for years now. The one in your pic, Fen, looks something like my Dagny does, in color and markings, not the size.

Does this cat behave like a feral, or more like a stray, i.e., not afraid of humans?

40 Polynikes,
Your painting goes to a new level of excellent. Seriously, the colors used throughout, the gentle movement of the water, the coats, proportions and postures of the horses, is all so accurate. I had to look carefully to tell it wasn't a gorgeous photo.

Out of curiosity, what is the size of the painting and about how long did it take to complete?

Today was the first time I'd seen it. It was very timid so I suspect it may be feral but if so, it's odd I hadn't seen it before.

Posted by: FenelonSpoke at May 31, 2025 06:08 PM (EJtBU)

44 I've mentioned my scale modeling days before, including the Revell sailing ships (the Golden Hind, Flying Cloud, and HMS Bounty) that I painted and built in the early '70s. Each kit came with colored thread, tan for the main lines and black for the tarred stays, plus pre-molded plastic ratlines. I painted the latter in flat black with a wash of gray, and they looked pretty good.

The sails were pre-molded too, in white plastic. I gave them a wash of heavily thinned gray-green paint, and they looked well weathered.

The Bounty model had been issued after the remake of Mutiny with Marlon Brando came out. Revell included figures of Mr. Christian and Capt. Bligh, and darned if they didn't look like . . . Clark Gable and Charles Laughton from the original film. I painted and included them because, tiny as they were, they resembled those actors so much. Usually I didn't like including human figures in my models. Possibly because they rarely seemed in the correct scale, and I had trouble painting them realistically.

46 Greetings T-Rex

Thank you for the hobby thread. Would you consider doing a coin/stamp collecting thread? Or has it been done? Are there any numismatists or philatelists among the horde?

While I'm not an active collector, I still have my coin collection that I started when I earned my coin collecting merit badge many years ago. It was one of the first merit badges I earned on the trail to Eagle. To this day I scan my change for any interesting coins though it's been a long time since I scored any silver or a wheat Penny. I check the folding money too.

Normally I'd say a longhair like that would not be a feral. But my late black Wolf probably spread some of his genes around before I adopted and neutered him. To this day there are ferals here with medium to long fur and bushy tails like his.

52 My grandfather would be salivating over that tool box and its contents. He was a mechanic on steam locomotives in the years leading to WW I. (It had the benefit of keeping him out of the military during that war. The skill was vital for the war effort at home.) He became a master tool maker for the navy after that. Such workmanship in the box and quality of the tools would have touched his heart.

56 JTB, if you're still here: I splurged on a new tobacco, a Cornell & Diehl Small Batch item called Sansepolcro. It has Italian dark-fired Kentucky, red and bright Virginias, and Dominican Black Cavendish. It comes in flakes, and it is *strong* stuff. Five or six minutes yesterday evening and I was ready to put the pipe down, and did. This morning I loaded a half pipe with it, gave it about the same time, and set it aside until just before lunch, when I smoked another six or seven minutes. Wow.

Clearly it's not something I can smoke by itself. Perhaps with some much milder Virginia in the bowl it will work well.

59 I built models as a kid, then around 2000 for a few years, then got sidetracked out of it again about 2015. I'm "reasonable good" at it, nowhere near contest or commission level. I have about 100 kits stashed that I bought some time ago for like $10-15 a pop..if you look now you will find that as the hobby went from mostly kids to mostly seniors, the prices of kits are shocking. On the new tools I get it, with the much lesser sales and the demand for incredible accuracy, but it's kind of hilarious how a mold that you recognize from the late 60s early 70s is now $45 dollars when a kit used to be $3.50.

It's not a kids' hobby any more. The Aurora Universal monster kits (the Frankenstein Monster, the Wolf Man, Dracula, etc.) used to sell at .98, as did the Napoleon Solo and Illya Kuryakin figures; and larger kits with more parts were $1.49 to $1.98. The Revell sailing ship kits I mentioned above were $4.98 in the early '70s.

62 The windshield for my old Fiat (as seen on this here Hobby Thread) that I ordered in February came in. All the way from Finland. The only place on the planet to get a new one, made to order. I've got as much in this windshield as the rest of the car. It's a cute little thing, wraparound glass like a 57 Vette.

78 56 ... "I splurged on a new tobacco, a Cornell & Diehl Small Batch item called Sansepolcro."

Hi Wolfus,

I got a couple of tins last week. I don't consider it to be that strong but it is VERY flavorful without being an aromatic. I should pick up some more while it is still available. I still have some from last year's release and they are very similar. Goes great with morning coffee. Adding a mild Virginia might take some of the edge off but a black cavendish, like Lane BCA, might work as well.

The local tobacconist had a pipe sale this week with Father's Day approaching. I got a 4th Generation churchwarden (didn't know they made one) and a Nording freehand half bent. I like the Nording freehand models and have several, most picked up for almost nothing at an estate sale. Superb smokers. The churcharden goes into the rotation of my long reading session pipes.

I've got a Red Bellied Woodpecker that frequents my backyard feeder. That was enjoyable.

He's no slouch at milling, either.

Looks like he's mostly using Sherline equipment, which really can't be beat if what you're making fits within its size limits. It's not cheap, but OTOH everything they make is a) like a little jewel and b) made in the USA. While I'm not dogmatic about it, I see no reason to support the Chinese machine tool industry if it can possibly be avoided.

I'm slowly getting my Sherline hobby shop together, buying parts on eBay as they become available. Eventually it's going to replace all my Unimat stuff (classic Unimat, made in Austria, not the current "Unimat", which is Chinese junk). The classic Unimat stuff is also well-made, but not nearly as rigid as the modern Sherline stuff. Plus it will be nice to have equipment that was made in this century.

Just about anything I can't make on my 3D printer.

Lamp shade finials, custom repair parts for old household items or other machinery, small car parts, you name it.

The combination of a lathe/mill and a GOOD 3D printer puts pretty much anything you can imagine within reach.

89 For Wolfus and the other pipe smokers. I may have found my ultimate English blend: Boswell's Northwoods. Tons of flavor, slow and cool burning and not overly strong.

I really enjoy Navy flake blends and my favorite is the Stokkebye Luxury Navy Flake. (The Stokkebye Twist Flake and Bullseye Flake are also good.)

Fortunately, both are available in bulk. Got to admit. If forced, I could pursue pipe smoking quite happily with Granger or Carter Hall codger blends.

Apart from that a 44 mph, WWII ship must have been vicious.

139 Hell of a lot of nice work in that boxer motor. Must be nice to have CNC hobby tools.

The one thing that I didn't see was how the electrcal timing is worked out. Did I miss something?

Also was surprised that he hand-wound the solenoids.

140 Just decided to check and so being a Tail End Charlie of sorts

Salty Dog and Washington Nearsider someone is coming out in 1/48 scale with a resin Lockheed P2V-7/SP-2H Neptune. Company called Jetmads, no idea who they are.

BNA Model World in Australia has it available for the pre-order price of ONLY $569 US. Need to win the lottery to buy two. One to build straight as an SP-2H and the other as an AP-2H.

Now back to the F-14s. Need to mask off the landing gear wells and start to apply the gull gray paint over my attempt at pre-shading.

141 Washington Nearsider, in the 80s Big Navy had an Exhibit Center at the Washington Navy Yard, belonged to Recruiting Command. They had a superb model building section, which would have been just the thing for you. I was offered a billet driving one of the Navy Recruiting trucks, a killer job. Drive and set up wearing green utility uniform, and impress the girls in crackerjack uniform.

Have a Model No. 425B myself, waiting for some refurb. Perhaps that is yours also, red tank.

Did that for a month, after The Storm. Way too many fried Spam sandwiches.

That sounds awesome.

Though, I preferred the Johnny Cash's to the crackerjacks...

145 I have an old Coleman, had no idea that they would rebuild. Super.

All the modelers here remind me that the best modeling I do is to admire theirs. Beautiful work.

When mine came back (two years ago), the technician included a parts list of what was installed, the cost of the parts alone exceeded the $50 I paid. Turnaround was about 30 days.

Yeah, but they were warm and tasty, at least at first.

Same. Beautiful stuff but way beyond my capabilities.

Yeah. When you have no power and no water, the fact that you have something hot to eat is highly satsifying.

I remember a painting of maybe a Fletcher Class aft deck with maybe 6 First Class POs smoking and joking. Titled The Wheels.

152 Individual track links are the bane of my existence as an armor modeler. The clean up on injection molded links is tedious. TRex (not the moron) makes some beautiful 3D printed links, but it's a Chinese company so I'm not a fan of supporting their business. They now have a notice on their homepage "Due to recent U.S. tariff policies on Chinese goods, all products will now be manufactured and dispatched from Japan." China has a large share of scale model market. It's annoying

154 With havin so much content do you ever run into any problems of plagorism
or copyright infringement? My blog has a lot of exclusive content I've
either written myself or outsourced but it appears a lot of it is popping it up all over the internet
without my authorization. Do you know any ways to help protect against content from being ripped off?
I'd definitely appreciate it.
