It's almost June, and the solstice and maximum daylight is drawing nigh. And I was looking at all that, length of day, equation of time shift, earliest sunrise vs latest sunset and all that.

Then I noticed something over the years, comparing solstice values. I was born in 1967, and over that time, I've lost 3 seconds of daylight on the solstice. :-) This is due to the earth's axial tilt slowly decreasing (these are all part of the long term Milankovich cycles, which are on the order of 10s to 100Ks year periods). We're on a decreasing leg of both axial tilt, and tropical year length.

But, while I've lost 3 seconds of daylight on the summer side, I've gained than 3 seconds on the Winter side. Still, I don't know how I feel about this. Nature is cheating me out of daylight as I get older.

51 >> Earth's rotation is slowing down, mostly from tides

Long term secular trend is slowing, but there are all sorts of little random hiccups and mass redistributions, and stuff going on with the earth's inner core that ride on top of that.

Of late, we've been speeding up a smidge. If this holds, and more likely now than not, a negative leap second will be required in 2029. This will likely crash the internet. Positive have been bad enough with computer systems, but a negative one has never been done. Hilarity will ensue.

They've agreed to eliminate leap seconds by 2035 (or so) in principle, but no specific proposal has yet been adopted. They will let UTC run free, running at atomic rate, but the question is for how long. There will probably be a leap minute thing done roughly every 60 - 100 years as needed.

If a negative leaps second starts looming, I'm betting this will set a fire under their asses and they will eliminate it before they have to do the negative one, so bad that might be for all the computer systems.

There is concentrations of radioactivity on Mare Acidalium and there is some questions about why it is there and younger meteorites of Martian origin show evidence of heavy irradiation.

Is this speed up anything strange? Nope, and not much compared to that last one, probably around 1875:
https://tinyurl.com/yah2me49

Scroll down to see a LOD chart going back to 1830. That was when astronomical observations got precise enough to notice the deviation between mean solar time and true uniform time. But still not a precise as atomic clocks. Indeed, it was that early data that made them realize the earth's rotation wasn't uniform.

Anyway, around 1875, the earth's rotation was about 3ms faster.

H Beam Piper's Future History and Alt Histories stories all assume Humans developed on Mars and where evac-ing but crashed and lost all technology. In the alternate history stories (Paratime) the timelines are organized about how bad the invasion was - 5th level was total failure, 1st level was total success. some of those were depopulated because the settlers messed up Earth as well and nearly died out themselves.

One of his more famous novels was a world where Aryans migrated across Asia and crossed the Pacific and took over North America. A police officer in PA is dragged by accident from our timeline to this one and the Paratime Police have to act to cover up the damage and keep the secret of Paratimers coming in to buy resources from out of the timeline,

Prime spot for harvesting gasses for the Asteroid mining base, with the added benefit of less radioactivity than Jupiter and a shorter voyage if timing is set right.
also an orbit that cuts Mars, Earth and Venus will provide time for processing Asteroid ore in exchange to the gas miners, and the closer you get to the sun the richer protons in the Solar wind are for collecting to react to water while on your way in and out.

But it appears that Mars has been all but dead, geologically speaking, since Cambrian time. Practically the only erosion would be wind erosion, and etching by Solar wind and cosmic rays. If there had been railways, or highways, or canals (heh) there should still be some evidence of the earthworks needed to make the right of way. Stuff that would show up on aerial photos as suspiciously artificial-looking lines.

Vail, AZ. It was in the collection of an old gent who had 40 acres of Studebakers, with a few Brand X thrown into the mix. When he passed, he left instructions that all the "parts cars" were to be sold at a fixed-price sale, 2 for $300. The Zip van was one of two, IIRC. When the Post Office surplussed it out, it was apparently bought by the Isaac School District (west of Phoenix), and ultimately sold to a private party, who glued red shag carpet to every interior surface.

My goal, this go-round, is to have it move under its own power. I am very close to that now.
