The new way of conversing with AIs made me think of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, specifically the scene on the Heart of Gold when they've successfully landed on the planet of Magrathea, but the backup personality for the shipboard computer won't let the crew out to explore the planet.
Zaphod convinces it to open the door: "Computer, if you don't open that exit hatch pretty damn pronto, I shall go straight to your major data banks with a very large axe and give you a reprogramming you will never forget. Capisco? [pause] Okay. Get the axe." (and the door opens.) Posted by: Grumpy and Recalcitrant at May 29, 2025 04:44 AM (O7YUW) 7
Bought a roast chicken at the grocery store today; $10 for the whole and $6 for a half. I ate the two legs, wings, all the skin and a good bit of one breast. The rest I chopped up and just made a batch of chicken salad. Got about 1 1/2 cups or so of shredded chicken. Mayo, dijon, minced gherkins and pepper blend as the base. I'm letting everybody get happy before I dive in.
I bought a half before and they are juicy, with a good crispy skin. The best part of the whole chicken was there was about a cup of rich dark chicken broth in the container. Strained that and froze for an addition in some dish to be named later. Posted by: RickZ at May 29, 2025 04:45 AM (gKDq2) 8

Evening and morning for this Thor's Day to all the satellites on Earth and space! I'm up earlier than I planned -- seems to happen a lot -- and while the rain is tapering off, it may be little while before I can go work out. So, coffee and AoSHQ.
I've been saying to people for years, "I love computers . . . but sometimes I want to reprogram them. With a fire axe." (Maybe I'm remembering that scene in Hitchhiker's, G & R.) You could use Evil Angel's line to Giles in Buffy: "I really want to torture you. It's been a long time . . . and when I last tortured somebody, they didn't even *have* chainsaws." Last night we attended a free showing of Hitchcock's Rope at our local suburban library, in color and on a large screen. I can't recall when I saw it last, or even if I'd seen it all the way through, on TV. Very effective, even if it's pretty much a filmed play. It's famous for AH's long continuous takes of, what, 12 or 15 minutes each; but it also plays out in real time. It begins on a sunny afternoon, spring or fall, around 4 or 5 p.m., and we watch the day fade and the lights spring to life on the Manhattan skyline, until the final scene happens about 6 or 7 pm.
James Stewart in it is like a controlled spring, releasing his coiled energy a little at a time until the climax. Was this his first film with Hitchcock? Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at May 29, 2025 05:00 AM (omVj0) 16

Yesterday I stopped at the tire store/repair shop, Tire Choice, I've been going to for some years, to have them check the Buick's battery. This one was installed by AAA about two years ago, and the previous one (also from them) lasted about 2.5, so I thought it might be a good idea to have it checked before I road-trip anywhere. Results: 100% charge, 99% battery "health." Cost to me: twenty minutes' wait, zero dollars.

I'm assuming a Latin Mass is entirely in Latin.?
I did go to a lovely Mass last Sunday- and no I did not take the Eucharist- where a number of the sung responses and prayers were in Latin, but I assume this was not a Latin Mass as almost everything else was in English. Posted by: FenelonSpoke at May 29, 2025 06:19 AM (fx2cy) 92
This makes sense when you consider that if word got out that an organization put dogs in bad homes, they would be barred from further adoptions. Posted by: NR Pax And there you have the analogy to Russia ending adopting out its orphans to Westerners because they (Russia) were not down with the orphans getting adopted by homosexual couples. Was this his first film with Hitchcock?
Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at May 29, 2025 05:00 AM (omVj0) I believe it was. Love this one, the subject is very dark but it's fun watching Hitch trying something new, just because he can. "Vertigo" was the Film Society pick for May, but we missed it b/c of his broken arm. He's much better after the first two days of shock and trauma and he has an appointment with the orthopedist this afternoon, so we will see what's next. Posted by: bear with asymmetrical balls at May 29, 2025 06:14 AM (LJ4cD) I understand, but that's kind of the point. It can't be tampered with easily. Translations are something else, of course, and have to be carefully watched. The Scripture readings and the sermon are in the language of the area. The rest of the liturgy doesn't change. Simple question: who does this former first lady herself adulate and respect? When did you ever hear her praising someone to the skies just for being who they are? Why must the world hold her up in the highest regard for nothing at all, when she has no interest in returning the favor?
Second simple question: why should anyone adulate and respect someone who by their own (constant and unceasing) admission is a downtrodden wretch who everyone hates and wants to destroy? How does she expect "Woe is me" and "Bow down peasant" to coexist side by side without utter absurdity? I think Jimmy Stewart did three films with Hitchcock.
Rope The Man Who Knew Too Much (with the beautiful Doris Day) Vertigo (with the beautiful Kim Novak) Rear Window (with the beautiful Grace Kelly) I like them all, but Rear Window is my fav, with Vertigo a close second. Vertigo surpassed Citizen Kane as the best movie of all time on a lot of lists in the past decade or so. It’s good but nowhere near as suspenseful as Rear Window, IMHO. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at May 29, 2025 07:03 AM (omVj0) The plot is weird. It’s a mystery based on a woman believing she is her dead grandmother (?) and that she must commit suicide like her ancestor. She is then watched by a detective, hired by the woman’s husband, who then falls in love with her but has a difficult time saving her because she wants to jump off of a building and he has vertigo from a previous traumatic incident when he was a police officer. Yeah, it’s a convoluted plot to say the least. It’s shot beautifully, though, and Novak is a stunner. Maybe that’s why I like Rear Window more? The plot is simpler with a nice three part act. And I like Grace Kelly more than Novak. Posted by: SpeakingOf at May 29, 2025 07:11 AM (6ydKt) 136
Little Dagny La Siberienne is playing with her Cat Dancer. This is a length of tensed wire formed in a curve, about two feet long, with a bit of cardboard at each end. I bought it for red tabby Arizona many, many years ago, and all my cats have loved it. Dagny dug it out of her toy basket herself.
Now the two of them are playing tag, or something much like it. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at May 29, 2025 07:12 AM (omVj0) Posted by: rhennigantx at May 29, 2025 07:12 AM (gbOdA) 138
