Nirvana. They changed the face of rock - ended the Hair Metal era. Credited with bringing Grunge out of Seattle and to the masses. They were a pretty stripped down, raw sound - very different from what came before them. Their music ushered in a stretch of bands and music that left a generation wondering what the hell to do next.

Here is a link to a letter from Steve Albini to the band. Albini produced the last Nirvana album, In Utero.

Dough. I explained this to Kurt but I thought I'd better reiterate it here. I do not want and will not take a royalty on any record I record. No points. Period. I think paying a royalty to a producer or engineer is ethically indefensible. The band write the songs. The band play the music. It's the band's fans who buy the records. The band is responsible for whether it's a great record or a horrible record. Royalties belong to the band.
I would like to be paid like a plumber: I do the job and you pay me what it's worth. The record company will expect me to ask for a point or a point and a half. If we assume three million sales, that works out to 400,000 dollars or so. There's no fucking way I would ever take that much money. I wouldn't be able to sleep.

NPR: What's Not to Love? Well, Plenty.

Let's open with what we know: NPR's tone and delivery of viewpoints are condescending. There is no riffing - it is all curated browbeating and lacks ideological diversity. Insular perspective on both simple and complex issues. Out of touch with a large swath of the population-especially rural and conservative listeners.

Identity politics, Identity politics, rah, rah, rah (let's do some old school cheer down thread). NPR claims to serve all but caters to a narrow, shrinking audience. They have a credibility problem - the larger group that no longer listens to them are tired of being sidelined and beaten on - and then handed a bill. It's reductive. And arrogant.

How the NPR money flows. Gotta love a link that pulls the research together.

NPR may receive little direct federal funding, but a good deal of its budget comprises federal funds that flow to it indirectly by federal law. Here's how it works: Under the terms of the 1967 Public Broadcasting Act, funds are allocated annually to a non-governmental agency, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, overseen by a board of presidential appointees. That corporation, in turn, can choose to support original programming produced by public television or public radio - but, by law, must direct much of its $445 million funding (scheduled to top $500 million next fiscal year) to local public television and public radio stations across the country, via so-called "community service grants."
Here's where things get tricky. Local stations, if they want to broadcast "All Things Considered," "Fresh Air" and other programming produced by NPR or competitors such as American Public Radio, must pay for it. Indeed, in its consolidated financial statement for 2021, NPR reported $90 million in revenue from "contracts from customers," a significant portion of its $279 million and much more than 1 percent. Such revenue was exceeded only by corporate sponsorships, which totaled $121 million. One can think of these funds as federal grants that have been sent from Washington - but returned to it.

By their own metrics (see links below), they are boutique broadcasting. Buh-bye, it's just a matter of time.

NPR's own research shows that of its 26.8 million listeners 23 percent self-identify as 'middle of the road'. Roughly 37 percent identify as liberal or somewhat liberal, and 26 percent as conservative or somewhat conservative. This roughly tracks Rosenstiel's data that NPR's audience skews more independent (14 percent) and Democratic (14 percent) than Republican (6 percent.)

By 2023, the picture was completely different: only 11 percent described themselves as very or somewhat conservative, 21 percent as middle of the road, and 67 percent of listeners said they were very or somewhat liberal. We weren't just losing conservatives; we were also losing moderates and traditional liberals.

The Mike Candrea years with the University of Arizona are the current gold standard. Sustained success. Impressive body of work. A lot of his drills and fundamental concepts transfer well from softball to baseball. He studied, taught, implemented, and won. A lot.

- Fourth-most Division I victories of any coach in any sport.

- Under Candrea, Arizona has a spectacular postseason record of 178-65. The Wildcats have played in an NCAA-record 34 consecutive postseasons.
- Fifty-three All-Americans with a staggering 108 total citations have played in the program since Candrea took over.

More recently, Patty Gasso and her Oklahoma teams have had a helluva a run. Oklahoma has won 6 of the last 8 WCWS and 7 of the last 11. Texas Tech knocked them out of the tournament this year.

The hawk has learned that after a certain large family eats outdoors, the leftovers in their yard attract plenty of sparrows, pigeons, and other yummy birds. It then waits for a long line of cars to build at the traffic light situated on the street next to the family's home.
Once the pedestrian crossing signal sounds, the hawk knows the line of cars is long enough to hide its approach. It swoops toward its prey, concealing itself behind the waiting vehicles, and strikes.

17 Day two of HD vision in my left eye, close in still needs to settle in but my mid and far distance is so sharp and clear that I can take my glasses off and it compensates enough for my right eye that I can operate effectively without glasses.

29 Dear Friends - prayers if you please for the folks at our church and especially for L. The mass casualty event that happened on Sunday has resulted in the death of one of our Parishioners. L. was a passenger in the vehicle that caused the accident and hit the other vehicles and pedestrians. The driver of the car, a parishioner as well, is still in the hospital. Luckily, L.'s wife, who was also in the car, is now home.

While Matthew 25:13 is talking about the Second Coming, it certainly applies here.

Tending bar and waiting tables in downtown Seattle in the early 90s gave me front row seats to a lot of amazing bands. I would close the place at 2am, hang out until 4, ride public transport back to the University District and be back in class at 8am.

Never felt unsafe. Never got tired. Graduated.

When I had my cataract surgery, my doc gave me a piece of paper to take to the DMV for just that reason. Although I guess technically, I do still need corrective lenses. They're just permanently implanted corrective lenses.

I had a metric Crescent wrench. Well, it wasn't a Crescent, but a Spanish brand called Irega. Good, sturdy tool, and I still have it and use it frequently. But the jaw and handle had scales on them, inches one side, millimeters on the other, so you could close the jaws on a nut, and read the size, which was a boon for selecting the right socket. Sadly, the etched scales have faded away to the point of being useless.

145 Soundgarden and Alice in Chains were the best bands of the Grunge scene. Now, had Andrew Wood not OD, I believe MotherLoveBone would have been the best. Drugs took out a metric ton of those grunge guys. Similar to what heroin did the jazz scene in the late 50s/early 60s.

One of the annoying things for me (still!) was discovering a new band while stationed in the UK (90-93) that I really liked and would have seen live had they not broke up because the two main songwriters hated each other (looking at you Uncle Tupelo).

My problem was I joined the Navy and spent the next 20 of 22 years away from the Seattle area. I did have 2 years in Everett - late 97 to late 99 - and it was glorious. Met my wife there and promptly moved to the east coast for the last 25 years.

Trucks are crazy. Mine is still pretty great. Mostly I'm debating whether to trade it in before it starts to develop more serious problems or just ride it out.

Given the cost, I'm just going to ride it out. All of the flaws of this truck are pretty well-known by now. The main flaw is it's diesel, not gas, and that's just added cost and complexity I don't need right now.

It's not. And my truck has some nuisances, but it's really nice for the most part. It'll be ten years old this year. I maxed out all of the "useful" stats and kept it simple with the comfort stuff. Bench seat, vinyl floors, key start, but it'll tow quite a bit and has manual 4x4 which is great.

Frankly, almost every time I opted to avoid fancy options was a smart move. It's solid and dependable. I'm just worried as it ages it will get more and more problems.

It simply does not make any sense to buy a new pickup truck unless the one you have is completely exhausted it's useful life.

I know some good mechanics, but I just hate taking it to a mechanic for things I could fix myself on a gas engine. Although maybe not on one made in the last 5 years.

And the diesel truck I have has nuisance issues. Poorly-engineered stuff designed to fail. So I have to keep more spare parts. It eats fuel filters every 8-10k miles so I keep them on-hand like oil filters. Well, Ford decided to make the fuel filter housing out of plastic and then require absurd levels of torque, so it's prone to shattering. A common complaint.

Or the DEF heater has already failed once. I'd prefer to do a DEF delete, but the EPA has gotten so tough on that. I'm hoping Trump does something about DEF in pickups, but I'm doubtful. It's not something he's going to know about and the GOPe will just foil it anyway. 99.9% of Federal government employees couldn't tell you what DEF is.

BOTV is a good book. But very complex. I guess too complex for a screenwriter to truncate in a coherent manner. Oh well. Still, a good book. Right out of mid 1980s NYC.

I don't remember but did Wolfe somehow incorporate the 1985 hit on Castellano, a major event in that time period, in the book? He had Al 'Sharpy' Sharpton nailed, I do remember that. And the whole 'Masters of the Universe' thing. Very 'Wall Street', another movie from the same period. Greed was good. Just don't run over your attacker with your car in . . . da Bronx. To this day. Especially if you are melanin-challenged. Plead out now.

That's the way we like it.

Took family to a very nice / large botanical garden. Greenhouses had one that was like 90 / 90%. Like breathing pea soup..

Had a few excursions into other climates, thanks to being a military wife. Wasn't always wonderful, but still would not trade those experiences for anything.

One of the co-workers said he is going with a mini-split for the master suite and let the rest of the house go to 80+/- degrees. Save money$$$.

Window rattlers would do just fine as well, but insurance companies here demand central or permanent air.

But, the portable ones work well if you run the waste heat out a window. Might be quieter than widow units too.

Yes, these are *much* quieter than window units. And I do run their exhausts out the windows. The problem for you (other than insurance requirements) would be... drainage, due to your high humidity.

I get by with placing my units on sturdy "boot trays" and the water evaporates before overflowing the trays, but then humidity here is around 30-40% unless it's raining.
