Actually not whole lots of KIA buried there, AFAIK. I've walked the rows many times over the years, only a handful of KIA graves. Anyone visiting should go there, and just beyond to Cabrillo Nat. Monument. Great history, some interesting WWII coast artillery stuff, spectacular views of Mexico, SD County, the city, and the harbor. Actually polynikes it's a decades-old problem with TJ's effluent, and recently they had an infrastructure repair that resulted in sewage flowing out the TJ River. SEALs moved their water work to north county, temporarily, as their base/training area is just north of the border. Zeldin was here a few weeks ago and met with his Mexican counterpart on this and other issues. Not sure where things stand. Guess I should check to see if Silver Strand State Beach is still closed (water) - that's directly affected.

Used to live in Sandy Eggo--looks more like Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery. One of the most beautiful and sad places in California.
Posted by: Phil at May 28, 2025 07:28 PM (sz8xI) Rosecrans was a interesting guy with a temper. He tended to mix great marching with getting surprised the first day of battle. When he flanked Bragg out of Chattanooga and the Rebs were attacking him at Chickamauga he was doing relatively well marching units from the South flank north to the other side of the line. But he got angry when General Wood questioned an order and gave him a blistering rebuke in front of his staff to never question an order. Longstreet for the Rebs was collecting a huge force opposite Wood's division in the morning when someone reported to Rosecrans that the division next to him was missing (it was concealed by some forest). He ordered Wood to move at once to scoot sideways to fix the line. Since the other division was right there, and remembering the insult he instead pulled his division out and behind the other divisions...and just minutes later Longstreets huge attack hit that hole perfectly. The east/port-side of the cemetery has nice views down onto the Ballast Point submarine base. Rare to have that sort of direct close view of such a facility.
That side (further south) also has nice monuments to ships involved in the Battle of Leyte Gulf (another such monument downtown on the waterfront next to the Midway museum). Just inside the main gate there are two MOH recipient graves. Posted by: rhomboid at May 28, 2025 07:44 PM (1m82a) 46

It is rainy down here today, so my brief explication seems acceptable. To wit, yesterday at 7:30 AM my wife called into the bedroom "my car is gone". Rolled out of bed, checked the doors, cleared my gun, and went outside just to see if there was anything to see while my wife called the Police. I found the car-door lock cylinder in the driveway, the steering column housing lying in the yard and a few other bits and pieces. Her Hyundai with 88,000 miles on it (I have always hated her car, she just uses it for daily commutes, but it's a freaking tuna can) was "poof" gone. Talked to the Ins. co., and they said most Hyundais are found within a few miles of where they are stolen. I hope they don't find it, I already have two Nissan Sentras scheduled for a test-drive tomorrow. If it had been my car that was stolen I would have been truly upset, I love my current car. Wife is totally indifferent, had no emotional attachment to the tuna-can. Still sucks.

Reminds me of a story - no doubt apocryphal - that Old Paco told me once. He said he had a friend who owned a worn-out old Ford and he got so tired of trying to keep it in repair that he drove it down to a busy service road and left it there with the key in the ignition and the doors unlocked. Later on, Old Paco asked him what happened to it, and the friend replied in disgust, "Nothing at all! I drove by a few days later and saw that not only was my junker still there, but there were three more just like it." Posted by: Paco at May 28, 2025 08:15 PM (mADJX) 105
@Don Black, do you know the name Harold Edgerton? Pioneer in photographic technology. My Dad worked for his company, EG&G, for his whole career. Those "bullet through a playing card" posters were some of the fruit of his labors. Also they had stuff on the Shuttle and the deep-sea submarining stuff in the 70's and 80's.

What's odd is the CPB (border dept) was part of the Int'l Trade Court's lawsuit because of the President's "Trafficking Tariff." The court said he couldn't do that, and, besides, it wouldn't stop trafficking anyway. I think that's what it said. Anyway, that made me think of sanctions. If the President imposed sanctions on, say, Mexico, for people trafficking, would these anal apertures on this court say that too was outside the Executive branch's power? In Scottish ancestry, adoption is as good as birth, so by adoption I can trace ancestry back to a very minor sept of Clan Davidson.
On my mother’s side, her mother was a Roberts, and the Roberts claimed to be related to Jefferson Davis, but every prominent Southern family claimed to be related to Jeff Davis, but none of them were. My mother’s father was, back in the day, of Dutch ancestry, and my maternal grandmother, his wife, had a genealogy done on him that claimed to trace him back to a Dutch navigator on the Nina, Pinta, and Santa Maria, if you believe it. So all those people who claim to have come over on the Mayflower: I can do you one better! Posted by: NemoMeImpuneLacessit at May 28, 2025 10:03 PM (3mKKp) 300
Red State has a pretty good detail of the anti tariff ruling brought by the international trade court. They found for 12 states and numerous small businesses that sued. They found the tariffs against Mexico and Canada are illegal due to several 1970s era laws passed by Congress regulating the President’s ability to levy tariffs since the constitution gives that authority to Congress. They found blanket 10% are illegal also. I think Trump is going to have an uphill battle on appeal and the timing of this stinks. Just when other countries are coming to the table, this court and the 12 states pulled his leverage. Why should they deal now when this court has enjoined authorities from collecting the taxes?

Oh, man, it's good to be here, glad to see everyone.
I'd a been here sooner but I was watching this fellow use a shotgun shell in an axe he made to split wood. The mechanics brought up many other thoughts. Insightful.
