And The Trees are all kept equal...

Trees Synchronize Their Bio-electrical Signals During Solar Eclipses: ‘The Wood Wide Web in Action’

doof-Dolomites.jpg

More evidence that trees display group cognition and communication has arrived from the Dolomites where a multidisciplinary team monitored a forest during a solar eclipse.

Their research witnessed two things, that the trees of the forest synchronized bioelectrical activity during the eclipse, and that the process of synchronization was started and directed by the eldest trees—a full 14 hours before the eclipse even started.

The results of their experiment, which was published in Royal Society Open Science, demonstrate both the incredible value of old trees to the forests in which they live, but also the extent to which our woody cousins respond to their environment.

Using rugged, custom-built, low-power sensors deployed across a forest in the Dolomites, the interdisciplinary team—comprising experts from Italy, the United Kingdom, Spain, and Australia—recorded simultaneous bioelectrical responses from multiple trees.

***

The electrical activity of all three trees became significantly more synchronized around the eclipse—both before and during the one-hour event. The two older trees in the study, about 70 years old, had a much more pronounced early response to the impending eclipse than the young tree. This suggests older trees may have developed mechanisms to anticipate and respond to such events, similar to their responses to seasonal changes, since solar eclipses occur on a cycle as well.

Not sure I trust the findings of any "experts" in any field - but kinda cool if it's really true.

Extreme Identity Verification

Those hypocrites who think Voter ID is too onerous probably are fine with this.

Bank Sparks Outrage for Bringing Bed-Bound 96-Year-Old Woman to Branch to Verify Her Identity

A Mexican bank has been accused of lacking sensitivity after insisting that a bed-bound 96-year-old woman be brought to a physical branch to confirm her identity in order to release her pension.

Photos and video clips of an elderly woman being transported to a BBVA (Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria) bank branch in Oaxaca, Mexico, on an ambulance stretcher have been going viral on Mexican social media and sparking outrage among the general public. 96-year-old Fidelia Vásquez Nuño cannot move due to her advanced age and various illnesses, but despite her son’s attempts to file the necessary paperwork with the bank to verify her identity, she had to be brought to a local branch to correct a glitch in her biometric registration that had prevented her from cashing her pension for six months.

“It’s an outrage. We’ve submitted everything: official documents, powers of attorney, and her legal representative. Yet, they’ve demanded that she come in person, even though she’s clearly not fit enough,” said Gilberto Ayala, the woman’s son. “The BBVA branch manager told us that the pension payment is suspended and that we need to comply with more requirements to be able to reactivate the payment. It’s an ordeal.”

***

Following their treatment by BBVA, the 96-year-old woman’s family filed complaints with the National Human Rights Commission, the Ombudsman’s Office of the people of Oaxaca, and the National Commission and Defense of Users of Financial Services.

17 Southcentral Alaska is a military place. The National Cemetery at Ft. Rich is a national treasure. Bondsteel Bridge over the Knik River is named for a Medal of Honor winner.

As a kid, I lived in a neighborhood with tiny two-bedroom houses, full of many, many kids. One house across the street had a 1964-1/2 cream colored Mustang in the driveway, and I watched a guy wash and wax it every weekend. I watched him put on his Army uniform and then he went away. He never came back, although that car sat there for a couple of years. And then it went away, too.

Vietnam was a cesspool and an abbatoir.

19 I'm going to call BS on the "trees anticipating eclipse" story. Main reason is "why?" What benefit is it to a tree to "anticipate" an eclipse? So the sky goes dark for half an hour. BFD. Photosynthesis resumes, sooner or later. If they are measuring anything at all, it's normal diurnal changes.

25 In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

40 My cousin was killed in Afghanistan in 2011. His parents never really recovered, which strained their relationship with their daughter. The medic who tried to save him felt like a failure, and attempted suicide. Every casualty reported has a trail of other lives negatively impacted.

Thankfully, while I was deployed as a company commander to Iraq in 2008, if was more boredom than action, so all my troops came home...but even some of them snapped afterwards, and with one attempting suicide by overdose and another shooting himself under the chin (and surviving with no permanent physical injury).

63 Another thing trees do- oak trees will, as a group, produce an excessive amount of acorns one year out of every so often, usually between four and seven years. Pretty much every oak in an area will do this, leading to squirrels gathering and burying so many that they become inadvertent farm labor planting the new crop of oaks.

Then, because of the abundance of food, the squirrels become more fruitful themselves, which doesn't work out very well for them the next year when food supplies return to normal, which is not enough to support the increased population.

The only thig that would be better is if they were Blasting The Flight of the Valkyries over large speaker cabinets as they flew by. Epic fly over.

Don't know what his actual assignment was but in performing those duties he was captured by the Nazis and put in with the other prisoners.

He killed a guard and put on his uniform and walked out of the barbed wire enclosure. He killed an officer and put on his uniform, walked to a car and ordered the driver to take him to X. On the road he killed the driver and made his way to allied safety.
God bless them all.

It seems strange to those unaffected, I suppose. Not getting shot at, not the same stressful situation as the infantry patrols...but just being away from home for a year, in an unfamiliar environment, breaks a small percentage of people.

Of course, one of my female troops with borderline mental health issues before the deployment (who was tall, gangly, and not really attractive) was housed in a building above an infantry company, and suddenly had LOTS of attention. Sneaking off to see dudes, getting trains run on her in the shower...the infantry company first sergeant chewed the whole company out and told them to stop fucking my soldier (who was detached from my command ag the time). What a mess. She (and her detached platoon leadership) couldn't handle it and we finally got her sent home early.

130 25 -- Thanks, tankdemon. I memorized that poem in grade school, but now I can only remember the first two lines. Old age sucks.

My father served in the Navy in the Pacific during WW II. My uncle served in Europe. He was captured at the Battle of the Bulge and spent the rest of the war in a German POW camp. He came home with TB, which is why every year in grade school I tested positive for TB. My paternal grandfather served during WW I. He was stationed at Ft. Kearney just in case the Indians saw a chance to uprise. My maternal grandfather was a war correspondent. He brought home two of the cannon shells that had been worked into vases.

I was very lucky during Viet Nam. I left New Jersey to come to Nebraska for college, and instantly lost contact with my entire graduating class. I don't know if any of the guys went to Viet Nam. Many of the guys at my college were very open about attending college to avoid the draft. A very good friend posted Iowa's draft quota above his desk. Sadly, he flunked out and got drafted. We visited after he came home again, and he was an emotional mess. Thankfully, Don was the only guy I knew who was actually deployed to Viet Nam.

He was wounded by a bayonet very strangely but no idea how that happened and if the German got his.

His claim to fame was everytime he would be PCS'd his new unit would already be off on some deployment so he got slotted for 'rear detachment'... More of a statistical curiosity and nobody was jealous as part of his job in the rear was maintaining contact with dependents of the deployed service member's dependants and family and keeping them informed of what they must know or be told.

He too was in the Ardennes and the battle of the Bulge, just outside Bastogne. His commanding officer was captured so dad was given a battlefield commission to 2nd lieutenant. Later in April 1945 his company was among the forces that liberated the Buchenwald Nazi concentration camp. He didn't talk about it either. When Texas succeeded from Mexico... did the US let it go? This is pretty close to the situation with the Eastern Territories of Ukraine. They rebelled, and fought off the Government for awhile... and wanted to join the neighboring State because they were culturally, linguistically, and ethnically... closer to them...

So the neighboring State (US with Texas, Russia with Ukes) stepped in.

190 Just a wild guess, but I think there is absolutely nothing peculiar to Putin or his worldview involved here - so chances of a materially different policy from a successor are small.

Seeing any of this in terms of personalities seems ridiculous to me, especially when the substantive factors are so obvious. Leave the Donbass issue aside. That's a familiar sort of situation, and has no wider implications (however vicious and stupid it's been).

Ukraine's military status and alignment (e.g. NATO membership, formal or de facto) is it. That's the entire issue. Has been *for decades*. For all those decades the russkis have been whining about eastward expansion (they were prostrate and rudderless when central Europe and the Baltics joined, but they are not Ukraine).

Preventing Ukrainian formal or de facto alignment with NATO was mission impossible. Only a change of regime (obviously the initial plan and objective, a quick political kill) had a chance at that. (cont'd)

Not sure if there is a difference between combat engineers and the Corps of Engineers. He was a magician on heavy machinery. He never talked about Vietnam much, but he didn't have any residual effects from it either. He did die pretty young (53) from cancer, so I wonder how close he was to Agent Orange. At his funeral saw some pics of him over there. He did tell the story of punching a anti-war protestor, who called him a baby killer, when he got back.

198 The Ukraine problem for Russia isn't Putin's problem, or his peccadillo, or his peculiar or idiosyncratic problem. It's not even crazy, or "Russia-rational" (i.e., paranoid). Sure it rests partly on a hilarious view of NATO as any kind of competent or serious military organization, but overall it's prudent, at worst.

It's a vital interest. Ukraine being in NATO or having the borders the Politburo gave it in 1957 or, well ... anything about Ukraine is *not* a vital interest of the US, or even Europe. The asymmetry of interests and resources here is why there's little chance Russia won't prevail (definition as yet undefined). Western interests are trivial, Ukrainian resources (including foreign) cannot match Russian if Moscow decides to dominate

Barring a Putin successor well outside the norm of any Russian leader in history (including Yeltsin), the successor wouldn't have materially different objectives in Ukraine.

Concur. Russia has a valid Historical paranoia about invasion from Europe. They want buffer states.

NATO, which ONLY exists to combat Russia (then the Warsaw Pact, but still exists when the W P does not)... being on the direct borders of Russia, is a non starter for Russian Patriots.

It's like if China was putting troops on the US border.... yet somehow that has become US policy.

220 Meanwhile, in Ukraine:
1. German Chancellor Merz has declared the range limitations on NATO have been lifted, and the Ukrainians are now free to strike as deeply into Russia as they want to. This may have had a significant affect on Russian logistics in 2023, but will now only serve to provoke the Russians.
2. For the last couple of nights the two sides have been exchanging missile and drone strikes, with the Russians doing considerably more damage.
3. The Russians are now moving faster on the ground than in the past, with a fresh border crossing in the far northeast. Rumor is that the Ukrainians had to pull troops out of the northeast to shore up the lines in the southeast.

Somebody mentioned Krypto the Superdog shitting his turds into the Sun.

It takes a surprising amount of delta-v to get close to the Sun. Suppose you launch something at escape velocity from Erf. Well, all you've done there is just get out of Erf's gravity well. You're still moving relative to the Sun at earth's orbital speed. To fall into the Sun, you've got to slow that down, requiring a good bit more delta-v.

See the long, winding trajectory of the Parker Solar Probe. It did a total of 7 flybys of Venus over 6 -7 years to bleed off enough speed to get very close to the Sun. But only briefly.

It's at its lowest perigee now, another one due June 19.

The Parker probe is now the fastest (relative to the sun) spacecraft every launched. At perihelion, it's speed is 192 km/s or 430,000 mph.

It has three more planned perihelia passes, ending in Dec of this year. That will be the official end of mission. It will still have some fuel, and the plan is to keep it going until it runs out of fuel.

At that point, they're going to turn the probe to expose its sensors and instruments directly to Sol's full radiative glory. The Probe will look directly at the Sun until its eyes burn out. This will give us direct data on Sol's output that close.

Closest approach to Uranus: periuranion.

The peri- for Venus is dubbed pericytherion. The proper word would be perivenerion, or using Greek periaphrodision (or something close).

At the time, they thought those were too dirty sounding, you know venereal and aphrodisiac, so they used Cytherea, the island where Venus was supposed to have been born.
