Wednesday Overnight Open Thread - May 28, 2025 [TRex]
Good evening Horde. The time has come for mid-week shenanigans of the overnight variety.
This is the Wednesday night ONT.
All you see beyond the green outfield fence is a grove of trees separating the DBU campus from Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery. Each evening at 7, about 30 minutes after weeknight games begin, the sound of "Taps" wafts over those trees. When that happens, all of the players, coaches, and umpires remove their caps and face the flags in center field until the song is over. The custom is spelled out in the ground rules given to visiting teams. Dan Heefner, DBU's head coach since 2008, said the official pause was inspired by former player Paul Voelker, who decided to remove his cap one game in 2014 to honor fallen veterans during "Taps." "You start thinking about it," Heefner says, "and it dawns on you what's really happening there." Meet The Holiest Team in Town.
"Taps," playing from the cemetery, could be heard on the field. It's a sound that's heard every night at 7 p.m., and Dallas Baptist University's games start 30 minutes prior.

Both are arbitrary and meaningless. SI is used a lot in science, technology and engineering. Good to have a standard. I have no problems with it.
Don't know why that means it's a problem that I buy gas by the gallon. I can work with two different systems for two different use cases.
For day-to-day use, SI's advantages are pretty minimal. I've never had someone say "You ran 1.3 miles" and then needed to know how many inches that was and been bothered by the lack of factors of 10.
For STEM it an be useful to have factors of 10, but you're going to be using scientific notation and floating-point ints a lot of the time anyway, so oh well.

My folks (and many others at that time and place) used to make about a metric ton of peanut brittle every fall, for use as a treat all through the winter.

I'm happy to not put it in food but it's everywhere: paper filler, cosmetics, toothpastes, etc. because it is so inert. Reminds me of the magnesium silicate (talc) somehow blamed for ovarian cancer. How does it even get there?

Both of my healthy-living, non-smoking parents died of lung cancer. My dad was diagnosed first. Doc says, "Weird, you're not a smoker. Better check the radon levels in your house." Radon levels were high. When Doc hears that, he checks Mom's lungs and finds cancer there as well.
Of course, there could be another cause, but it sure looked like radon was the culprit.

1) Human beings do not have "genders". They have sexes, of which there are two, and only two.
2) Barring a VERY few unfortunates with messed-up chromosomes, sex is an inherent property of all mammalian cells and is immutably fixed at the moment of conception. There is no "assignment" involved, at birth or at any other time.
Never cede the language to your enemies. Never.
And just in case anyone gets the wrong idea here, I have sympathy for those suffering from the delusion that they are a sex other than the one they actually are. That doesn't mean I'm going to accept the delusion as reality, any more than I'd accept that someone who had the delusion he was Jesus Christ was *actually* Jesus Christ.
That doesn't mean I think either should be killed or otherwise abused. I think they should be offered treatment, to the extent that such things can be treated.
But I am never, never, never going to accept a delusion as reality.

Besides the influence on kids who probably wont make millions in the majors juicing, I never felt the juicing was a huge deal. Old time major leagers didn't have trainers, luxury jets, get paid so much they didn't have to work in the offseason, personal assistants to handle their lives, and luxury team facilities. Juicing was just another modern help tool. Consequences to me are kind of like football health damage. You should know the risks and you make your choice.

Miklos, did you ever read Fritz Leiber’s The Big Time? He won a Hugo for it back when that actually meant something. The way you describe the Waffle House makes me think of the Recuperation Station where our narrator Greta tells the story. You won’t get it if you haven’t read the book. I do recommend it if you haven’t.

There is a 1917 Model T touring car in the showroom of my local Ag equipment dealership. They were a Ford dealer for years, and it was evidently presented to them by Ford Motor Company after many years of service, in the 1950's. The car shows its age, but is mostly complete, and I expect it could be made to run. Very cool to see it there. Yes, it is black.

Tons of wineries, large and small. Many international gold and silver medalists. Great stuff.
Maccabee is supermarket beer. Like wineries, we have end amounts of boutique breweries.
We also have some distilleries. Their low end products are rough but the higher end stuff can be quite tasty and interesting and give you a red nose.
