Wednesday Overnight Open Thread - May 28, 2025 [TRex]

Good evening Horde. The time has come for mid-week shenanigans of the overnight variety.

This is the Wednesday night ONT.

Not a new phenomenon, but saw this story or versions of the story shared across social media over the last week.

All you see beyond the green outfield fence is a grove of trees separating the DBU campus from Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery. Each evening at 7, about 30 minutes after weeknight games begin, the sound of "Taps" wafts over those trees. When that happens, all of the players, coaches, and umpires remove their caps and face the flags in center field until the song is over. The custom is spelled out in the ground rules given to visiting teams.

Dan Heefner, DBU's head coach since 2008, said the official pause was inspired by former player Paul Voelker, who decided to remove his cap one game in 2014 to honor fallen veterans during "Taps." "You start thinking about it," Heefner says, "and it dawns on you what's really happening there." Meet The Holiest Team in Town.

Speaking of baseball...and Dallas...and those no longer with us... Did you know that New York Yankee Mickey Mantle is buried in Dallas?

One of the greatest baseball players who's ever lived lies in rest inside Dallas' Sparkman/Hillcrest Memorial Park. "Mickey Charles Mantle," says the plaque on the marble wall in St. Matthew hall before going on to describe him as "A magnificent New York Yankee." The Mick, a study in contradictions: an Oklahoman by birth, a New Yorker by occupation, and a Texan at the end of the day.

On a summer day in 1958, Mantle, aged 26, and his family moved to a ranch house on Watson Circle in Dallas' Preston Hollow neighborhood. Mantle moved in part to escape the burden of fame that came from living in New York City. The house no longer stands. But from there, Mantle made a life in Dallas. Mickey Mantle Made a Name for Himself in New York, but He's Forever a Texan

Here's another story: Move to Dallas in 1958 provided Mickey Mantle the privacy he craved

Speaking of Dallas(ish), an era has ended. Southwest is now charging fees for checked baggage. Don't worry. The ONT charges no additional fees for your emotional baggage. Lord knows you're already paying a price to carry it around.

Science news - did you know that your fingers wrinkle in the exact same pattern every time after being soaked in water?

Finger wrinkling during and after water immersion, often called pruning, is an evolutionary mechanism that increases grip strength in water. Previous studies have determined that water-induced finger wrinkles result from vasoconstriction, or the tightening of blood vessels below the skin's surface. However, no previous studies have characterized the morphology of topographical finger wrinkles.

The results demonstrate a significant relationship between wrinkle orientation across both time points and thus reveal the consistency of wrinkle morphology over time. On the repeatability of wrinkling topography patterns in the fingers of water immersed human skin

Now you know. You should also know that you paid to support the study. "This material is based upon work supported by the National Science Foundation under Grant No. 1653071."

But wait...there's more!

Earth's Core Holds a Vast Reservoir of Gold, And It's Leaking Toward The Surface

Earth's core is rich with gold, and it's leaking out through the mantle and into the crust, new research has found.

A new study of isotopes found in the volcanic rock that oozed out from deep under the lithosphere has revealed precious metals in Earth's crust, including gold, initially leaked out of the core before beginning the long, long journey up to the surface, borne on convecting magma.

Although we can access gold in Earth's crust, the amount there is an estimated minuscule fraction of the total quantity that our planet possesses. Like a dragon, Earth is hoarding most of its gold: research suggests more than 99 percent is in its metallic core - enough to cover all of Earth's land in gold 50 centimeters (20 inches) thick.

Passing a baseball sounds painful. I didn't realize passing a baseball was a team effort, but apparently it takes a record-breaking team.

Record-breaking team reunites in Idaho to pass baseball

There is more to the story.

A pair of serial Guinness World Record-breakers reunited in Idaho to capture the title for the most behind-the-back baseball catches in one minute.

I feel dumber for having clicked. You're welcome if you joined me.

ET digs Strauss?

European Space Agency will beam the famous "2001: A Space Odyssey" waltz out into the cosmos

The European Space Agency is planning to beam Johann Strauss' "Blue Danube" waltz out into the cosmos to celebrate a series of key anniversaries in the history of spaceflight.

2025 marks the 50th anniversary of the European Space Agency and its "Estrack" satellite tracking network.

It also marks the 20th anniversary of its "Cebreros" space antenna and, coincidentally, the 200th birthday of Johann Strauss II himself, composer of the Blue Danube.

40 My uncle was a pitching scout for the Yankees organization for decades. During the 60's sometime, my twin cousins (his boys) and me were with Uncle at some AA game where he was scouting a prospect. During the 7th inning stretch, the announcer, talked through a glove giveaway promotion and asked: "What pitcher gave up Mickey Mantle's first Major League home run?"

Uncle turned to some kid behind him and whispered in his ear and told him to go tell one of the ushers.

The kid does and wins the glove.

Turns out the pitcher was Uncle when he played for the White Sox.

Hell of a guy.

Since Ft. Knox is, at best, filled with tungsten filled bars, if not empty, you probably don’t have to worry about the scarcity of gold, just our lack of it.

81 Gold isn't that rare, when you come to think of it - most of the gold that's ever been mined is currently in someone's possession.

Silver, on the other hand, is removed/destroyed through its industrial uses. Like Tomahawk missiles. 500 troy ounces in each one. BOOM! Have some silver molecules!

I hope someday to have enough silver for a Tomahawk missile. I'm more than halfway there.

Imperial Stormtrooper vs. Metric Stormtrooper

I saw not too long ago one of those "Why don't Americans use the metric system like everyone els" posts that practically beg people to make anti-American comments.

Well, here's why Americans don't use the metric system like everyone else. Inches and pounds are weights and measures that developed organically over time. Ordinary people systemized their use, not kings and princes.

The metric system, like so many other catastrophes, was developed by "experts", imposed by fiat and accepted by people accustomed to being told what to do.

American system: weights and measures of a free people. Metric system: weights and measures for sheep.

Both are arbitrary and meaningless. SI is used a lot in science, technology and engineering. Good to have a standard. I have no problems with it.

Don't know why that means it's a problem that I buy gas by the gallon. I can work with two different systems for two different use cases.

For day-to-day use, SI's advantages are pretty minimal. I've never had someone say "You ran 1.3 miles" and then needed to know how many inches that was and been bothered by the lack of factors of 10.

For STEM it an be useful to have factors of 10, but you're going to be using scientific notation and floating-point ints a lot of the time anyway, so oh well.

The people who insist on Metric superiority are mostly commies who are just mad that America is powerful enough we can ignore worldwide standards in our day-to-day lives. They want us taken down a notch, so we're just like the French.

There's a slow-water place on the Frasier Creek - not far from where I live - that gets dredged and sluiced very year as soon as the snow melts and opens the road. Just up a sharp ravine there used to be a 5-stamp ore crushed and a huge tailings pile of snowy white quart mixed with fools gold. Huge chunks. Someone discovered it and hauled it all off - probably for ornamental landscaping.

The ore stamp mill was still standing 20 years ago.

A relative brought back some macadamia nut brittle from Hawaii a while back. Delicious.

Fortunately for the diaBEETUS, it was just a small bag.

My folks (and many others at that time and place) used to make about a metric ton of peanut brittle every fall, for use as a treat all through the winter.

It was a common enough activity that the local grocery stores had would sell bags of raw peanuts.

I too am pretty skeptical about any "science" from the powers that be after watching them lie to us and completely disregard the scientific method during Covid.

OTOH, the body's cancer responses to non-reactive irritants are sometimes pretty strange.

Asbestos fibers are barely reactive, yet thin fibers that make it deep into the lungs are quite effective at causing lung cancer.

Both of my healthy-living, non-smoking parents died of lung cancer. My dad was diagnosed first. Doc says, "Weird, you're not a smoker. Better check the radon levels in your house." Radon levels were high. When Doc hears that, he checks Mom's lungs and finds cancer there as well.

Of course, there could be another cause, but it sure looked like radon was the culprit.

The United Kingdom’s first electric flying taxi has taken to the skies, marking a significant milestone in aviation technology. Vertical Aerospace, a Bristol-based company, successfully tested its VX4 prototype, which carried a pilot and four passengers on its maiden cross-country flight over England’s Cotswolds.

The aircraft, which resembles a traditional small plane but operates with electric propulsion, reached speeds of 150mph during the test. Once fully operational, it is expected to achieve speeds of up to 200mph. The VX4 generates lift through its wings, making it quieter and more energy-efficient than traditional rotor-reliant designs.

323 "Gender assigned at birth" is another term that need to be killed with fire.

1) Human beings do not have "genders". They have sexes, of which there are two, and only two.

2) Barring a VERY few unfortunates with messed-up chromosomes, sex is an inherent property of all mammalian cells and is immutably fixed at the moment of conception. There is no "assignment" involved, at birth or at any other time.

Never cede the language to your enemies. Never.

And just in case anyone gets the wrong idea here, I have sympathy for those suffering from the delusion that they are a sex other than the one they actually are. That doesn't mean I'm going to accept the delusion as reality, any more than I'd accept that someone who had the delusion he was Jesus Christ was *actually* Jesus Christ.

That doesn't mean I think either should be killed or otherwise abused. I think they should be offered treatment, to the extent that such things can be treated.

But I am never, never, never going to accept a delusion as reality.

Never.

Besides the influence on kids who probably wont make millions in the majors juicing, I never felt the juicing was a huge deal. Old time major leagers didn't have trainers, luxury jets, get paid so much they didn't have to work in the offseason, personal assistants to handle their lives, and luxury team facilities. Juicing was just another modern help tool. Consequences to me are kind of like football health damage. You should know the risks and you make your choice.

342 Hello, Biden's Dog! I've been wanting to catch up to you in the comments to ask about something someone told me about Israel that didn't sound right. He said Israeli Jews hate Christians so much they spit on them. He said the Orthodox Jews hate Christians the most. But I grew up as a Christian being taught a special affinity for Jews since they are God's chosen people and my Savior is Jewish, so it seems weird that Jews would be hostile to Christians.

Can you enlighten me, please?

Posted by: Emmie celebrates the Audacity of Trump! at May 28, 2025 11:58 PM (rF2iL)

Was out for over an hour and only noticed your comment now.

Regarding the spitting, this mostly occurs in Jerusalem's Old City and is mostly done by young delinquent hotheads. It also occurs occasionally, i.e., the streets aren't flooded with these idiots' saliva.

This is physical assault, plain and simple. Anyone doing this needs to be tossed into jail. Disgraceful behavior.

As to Jewish resentment against Christians, it isn't limited to the Orthodox. The resentment arises because of history and never-ending missionizing. Suggestion: drop the "to the Jews first" Great Commission and Satan's synagogues shticks.
