  • Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince says rampant blocking of "illegal" football streams in Europe will kill people and he's probably right. (TorrentFreak)

Cloudflare is used as a proxy server by more than 24 million websites - a huge and growing chunk of the internet. And the people trying to stamp out "illegal" football streams in Europe simply get court orders to ban the IP addresses of offending servers.

Except the IP addresses often don't belong to the offending servers at all, but to a proxy server sitting in front of the actual server, and handling traffic to thousands of other websites, which can be anything from random blogs to essential services.

They don't check first, and they don't care. They get the court order, the IP addresses get banned, and all those websites go offline at once.
"A huge percentage of the Internet sits behind us, including small businesses and emergency resources in Spain," Prince explained.

"The strategy of blocking broadly through ISPs based on IPs is bonkers because so much content, including emergency services content, can be behind any IP. The collateral damage is vast and is hurting Spanish citizens from accessing critical resources," he added.
Your call could not be connected because someone in another country wanted to watch soccer.

35 10 That FreeBSD article contains this grammatical gem:

Posted by: Ciampino - I'll call the Grammar Cops at May 26, 2025 05:06 AM (sPQoU)

USAGE
The original meaning of the phrase beg the question belongs to the field of logic and is a translation of the Latin term petitio principii, literally meaning ‘laying claim to a principle’ (that is, assuming something that ought to be proved first), as in the following sentence: ‘by devoting such a large part of the anti-drug budget to education, we are begging the question of its significance in the battle against drugs’. To some traditionalists, this is still the only correct meaning. However, over the last 100 years or so, another, more general use has arisen: ‘invite an obvious question,’ as in ‘some definitions of mental illness beg the question of what constitutes normal behavior’. This is by far the more common use today in modern standard English

Fr. Capodanno, MM is a Servant of God. There is currently a cause for canonization by the the Archdiocese of the Military Service. There is also not a bad little biography of him, The Grunt Padre.

Servant of God Fr. Capodanno was killed in battle (either rendering first aid, or administering Last Rites -- we don't know because both the Marine and Fr. Capodanno died). Fr. Capodanno was wounded twice before his fatal wounds. One of his arms was disabled by a wound and he was seen using the still-functioning arm to lift the other while administering Last Rites.

I have a particular devotion to Servant of God Fr. Capodanno and always include him in my particular Litany of Saints during my Rosary and other prayers.

They are naming CVN 81 "Doris Miller" after the seaman who received the Navy Cross for his actions at Pearl Harbor. First carrier named for an African American, and an enlisted man too.

More fitting that naming one for Ford, Clinton or Bush. But... money talks.

Hold on.
The Constellation-class frigate (FFG-62), not constructed, years behind schedule, and way over the cost estimates.

Applied retroactively, this would leave a substantial number of edifices, roads and whatnot in West Virginia unnamed.

102 The sad truth is Navy ship-building has cratered into a graft and disorder failure. The Navy has lost it's way. Need to fire a lot of senior people.

The U.S. Navy has a long history of fukcing up warship design. There's a book by Capt. C. Raymond Calhoun, Typhoon: The Other Enemy that blames the Bureau of Ships for ignoring the problem of instability of the Farragut class destroyers (refits during WWII made them top-heavy). Calhoun was skipper of the Dewey (a Farragut): she had the dubious honor of listing about 90 degrees, but not capsizing.

CVN's 82 and 83 respectively.

108 Pixy-

Is there an easy way to scan a photo of my WWII hero uncle so that people can see it here?

Posted by: Miklos at May 26, 2025 08:49 AM (K6h4I)

109 "Except the IP addresses often don't belong to the offending servers at all, but to a proxy server sitting in front of the actual server,"

Pixy you should have put a note on the Cloudflare article is that this is why VPNs are worthless at best and actual security threats at worst. Because that's all a VPN is too, is a proxy server, and I promise ya'll that every security program knows which server IPs belong to any given VPN.

You see it now with sites like Amazon, where you can't use a VPN connection for shopping, or YouTube, which tailors what you see to the country your computer via VPN is supposedly in.

So all you've done is send your copyable stream of data through a 3rd party site.
