His chief concern in this work, however, was the interplay of light and shade, the reflections, perspectives and outlooks – even at the cost of a truthful depiction: geometrically laid marble floors were rare in bourgeois households in Holland.
Seems a little hate and envy on the first of the upper middle class. Posted by: rhennigantx at May 26, 2025 09:34 AM (gbOdA) 10

Established as a civic foundation in 1815 by the banker and businessman Johann Friedrich Städel, the Städel Museum ranks as Germany’s oldest museum foundation. Under a single roof, its collection offers a virtually complete survey of seven hundred years of art from the early fourteenth century to the present, with focuses on the Renaissance, the Baroque, early Modern art and much more.

I enjoy the Golden Age Dutch painters. This one is interesting for the detailed and meticulous interior with its clean lines, almost photographic, and especially for the use of light and reflections. The rooms and the decorations are so strong, the people are almost superfluous and generic. It's an odd combination. The painting is 17th century but it has a nearly surreal feel to it.
BTW, check out Alinga's still life paintings. They are superb and rich in color and detail. Posted by: JTB at May 26, 2025 09:43 AM (yTvNw) 29

Gravity putters? Is that what they're called?
