Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Mid-Morning Art Thread![]() Esther before Ahasuerus Artemisia Gentileschi There is a small art museum about a 10 minute walk from me, and they had an exhibition of the works of Artemisia Gentileschi. What the hell...give it a shot. Wow. Incredible. I have posted her stuff before, but seeing dozens of her pieces in person really drove home how talented she was. I don't care about the "I AM WOMAN, HEAR ME ROAR!" crap about her. What I like is her incredible art. She isn't as good as Caravaggio, because nobody is, but she is nipping at his heels. Ahasuerus, known historically as Xerxes I, reigned as King of Persia from 486 to 465 BC. He is a prominent figure in the biblical Book of Esther, where he is depicted as a powerful yet capricious monarch. The name "Ahasuerus" is derived from the Hebrew transliteration of the Persian name "Khshayarsha," which corresponds to the Greek "Xerxes."

Ahasuerus, the Persian king. Esther revealed Haman's plans to kill the Jews to Ahasuerus, who then has Haman executed and grants permission to the Jews to take up arms against their enemies.

Hmmm. She's not bad, per se. But, looking her up, her stuff feels... I am not sure what the right word is. Her figures are a bit doughy. This feels like one where you need to see them in person and maybe they would be better. And no, the comparison is not fair. Esther before Ahasuerus
Artemisia Gentileschi Wow. The leading legs E and A form a "V" shape which is anchored on the rim of the bottom step. It seems to say this is where the power dynamic rests with the gulf between them represented by the blank wall. This is pretty great stuff and is exactly the stuff that gets artsy types all sweaty. The inadvertent reaching out of E's left arm can be read as either as the an expression of pleading or thanks, it is a lovely ambiguity. This transient moment, along with the tensed body of A and E's overall collapsing is a moment in play, frozen. Gotta love that peeps in biblical times wore Baroque clothing - who knew? The technical skill here is spectacular. Thanks CBD for this great image. What a gift to be in France so you can go see all these greats works. Would hang though it would be better if she was showing some leg. Posted by: Altaria Pilgram - My President has convictions at May 30, 2025 10:01 AM (8SDU5) 107

Frank Bergman May 29, 2025 - 12:55 pm Leading scientists are sounding the alarm after official government data from the Czech Republic revealed that Covid mRNA “vaccines” have caused over 200,000 fetal deaths. A major study, which included 1.3 million Czech women, uncovered staggering surges in miscarriages among those who had received the injections. The study analyzed women in the Czech Republic aged 18-39 years. https://tinyurl.com/2ue3de8a Posted by: rickb223 at May 30, 2025 10:06 AM (ipqug) 112

Posted by: Bulg at May 30, 2025 09:57 AM (77rzZ) Reminds me of the way that Elizabeth I would deal with people who had angered her, but who were too powerful to simply whack off their heads. She'd come for a visit, bringing the entire royal court and all their servants and hangers-on, all of whom expected to be entertained in royal fashion. And then she'd stay for months. At least one noble family was reportedly bankrupted by Gloriana's visit. Then there was the practice of the Siamese kings of giving a sacred white elephant to someone who'd annoyed them (where we get our term "white elephant"). You couldn't put it to work, because sacred. Nor could you sell it or give it away (because that would be offensive to the king). But you still had to feed it and house it. I don't know how much it costs to keep an elephant in victuals, but it can't be cheap. Esther before Ahasuerus
Artemisia Gentileschi, Italian, 1620s The Met: The most famous woman painter of the seventeenth century, Gentileschi worked in Rome, Florence, Venice, Naples, and London. This painting, among her most ambitious, represents the Jewish heroine Esther, who appeared before her husband, King Ahasuerus of Persia, in order to stave off a massacre of the Jewish people, breaking with court protocol and thereby risking death. Rather than historical recreation, contemporary theater informed how Gentileschi conceived this dramatic scene in which Esther faints just before the king grants her request. A servant of African descent restraining a dog was painted out by the artist, but is partly visible beneath the marble pavement to the left of the king’s knee. --- Now I understand the painting. It's very good; beautifully detailed, great highlighting but I would pass hanging it. Thanks. Mea culpa for lateness to the thread. They knew what the ancient Greeks and Romans wore. They could at least have used those to communicate the idea of antiquity.
There are prints from a costume party at the court of Louis XIV, where everyone was to come as an Ancient Greek. Very fancy costumes: no idea what ancient Greeks wore. Some statuary might help with what a toga is, but “Toga Party!” just means wear a bedsheet. And anyway, how ancient Greeks and Romans dressed says nothing about Persian costume. You might as well say dressing in impeccable early Victorian style would help you blend-in in pre-Meiji Japan. Posted by: NemoMeImpuneLacessit at May 30, 2025 11:19 AM (ZVgZ4) 193
Well if my remember my childhood Sunday school classes correctly Esther is fainting, or on the verge of fainting, because anyone who approached the King or Persia without consent was executed horribly, even the Queen. So just the act of showing up unannounced to ask him not to genocide her people could have been a death sentence for her.
