Gun Thread: Lack O' Content Week 2 Edition!

052525 poptart gun scaled.jpg

Howdy, Y'all! Welcome to the wondrously fabulous Gun Thread! As always, I want to thank all of our regulars for being here week in and week out, and also offer a bigly Gun Thread welcome to any newcomers who may be joining us tonight. Howdy and thank you for stopping by! I hope you find our wacky conversation on the subject of guns 'n shooting both enjoyable and informative. You are always welcome to lurk in the shadows of shame, but I'd like to invite you to jump into the conversation, say howdy, and tell us what kind of shooting you like to do!

As promised last week, here is more lack o' content!

With that, step into the dojo and let's get to the lame-o content below, shall we?

******

FUNdamentals
So fundamentals. I advocate focusing on one of four fundamentals, stance, grip, sight alignment and trigger pull/squeeze/press/manipulation every time you're at the range.

Assuming you're not focusing on fundamentals, as I suspect many of you are not, it begs the question; precisely what are you focusing on? Anything? Anything at all?

Please let us know in the comments.

2025 NoVAMoMe

052525 hello-moron scaled.jpg

Note: One of the great joys of NoVAMoMe season, at least for me, is being able to cut and paste the entire block of text below and haranguing you to attend the event. Are you attending? Are you focusing on the fundamentals of attending?

Alright, guys and gals, the long awaited and highly anticipated details of the 2025 NoVAMoMe are here! That's right, I finally got my act together and updated the information page for 2025, and need to go over a few details. First, the date is June 21st, 2025. Nextly, my bestest blog buddy bluebell and I have decided 2025 will be a year of NoVAMoMe simplification, and want to pass along the changes from prior years.

First, no more registration and no more advance charge for food. If you would like to attend, send an email to WeaselBell Productions, and let us know. You will be directed to a sekrit webpage with all of the details. We do ask once you have decided to attend to let us know so we can coordinate an expected count with venue management. Once there if you are hungry or thirsty simply order from the onsite menu and pay separately. Cash and credit cards accepted. Next, although fun, we have decided to take a break from the raffles and mug sales this year. Depending on how it goes, that may be something we bring back in future years. While your generosity is always appreciated, with no prize table, please leave donations and contributions at home, but bring your appetite for a great afternoon spent with your imaginary online friends.

A NoVAMoMe PSA from our pal bluebell

Hi folks - just a quick PSA. If you write for info about the MoMe, please give us a few words in the body of the email just so I know you are a Moron and not a spammer (moron). I do receive spam on this email account because it's sitting right here in my nic, so that's why I'm asking. I don't want to give our details to a spammer. Also, remember to check your spam folder if you don't receive a reply email.

Thanks.
bluebell

Seriously, just send an email then go to the website with the password provided. If you forget, a link to the email is on the main page, left sidebar. If you do not sign up, bluebell will be disappointed. Weasel will be disappointed, too, but it's bluebell you need to worry about.

That's it, people. Email WeaselBell Productions today!

18 My usual fundamentals focus on range trips are trigger squeeze and sight alignment. On smaller pistols (EX: snub nose revolvers) messing up the trigger squeeze will throw your sights off. I try to practice before the range visit with snap caps first. This way, if I don't have the basics down, I can usually see the sights move when I squeeze the trigger, especially in double action on a double action revolver. Shooting revolvers in double action is one of the harder skills to pick up.

24 Evening gub folks.
Last week on Gun Talk they were talking about the hearing protection act hopefully passing soon.
I'm going to suppress everything if it passes. "Silencer" is scare the ignorant bullcrap so I won't call them that.
Seems there is some drama with some manufacturer and their stace on the bill. Not sure of the particulars on it.

26 And, range report, new barrel installation edition. As I told the guys I shoot with, "New barrel, new load, same idiot behind the trigger."

Truer words were never spoken. Anyway, after checking, rechecking and checking my check on the head space, I measured the chamber, set my seating die and seated some existing ammo a bit deeper so it would run in the new chamber. (I did make sure to run a couple of patches down the bore before heading to do some shooting)

I hit the range, put the trusty Magneto speed on the rifle and pulled the trigger. Holy smokes...this was ammo I'd run in the previous barrel, and in the new barrel, it was 100 fps faster. I figured a 174 grain projectile running over 3000 fps was a bit too spicy so I ended the initial range trip and headed back to the reloading bench.

I might add, I was also doing an initial zero of the scope and it wasn't even close at 50 yards, not even on paper. I looked again, rookie mistake. I hadn't set the scope back to zero after the last 1,000 yard match.

I need to practice the new eyesight. Going to try starting at 5 yds and making that work before moving out. I had the most success at that distance but started at the end of the session so need to verify. Also going to bring the Kimber with red dot and see how I do with the heavier gun.

Mocked one up in the front yard for airsoft target practice today for the grankids. Drilled into them keeping pointed downrange with the finger off the trigger. Never crossoing the firing liine until the range isn't hot and the difference between a hot and cold range. Youngest grand had to retreat to nerf guns as he can't quite pull the trigger on the airsofts. Oldest (8yo ) is learning site allignment and trigger pull. Doing pretty good too.
Probably going to start BB guns out in the sticks with him next weekend.

Posted by: RedMindBlueState at May 25, 2025 07:31 PM (Wnv9h)

47 Anyway, I took 7 tenths of a grain out of my initial load, loaded up some more test ammo and headed out. Results were most excellent. velocities were more than manageable and was able to get zero. So, I hit the silhouette match figuring it should be okay. And, initially, it wasn't. In fact, it was so bad I was about to quit but, they talked me into staying to see if I could get the dope worked out. I looked again, and, idiot me had read my elevation notes incorrectly. So, after a 1 for 10 start, I finished strong, going 8 for 10. Even better, after I was done, I checked my velocities again and was showing a glorious ES under 10.

Anyway, looks like the initial load is good enough for steel out to 500 meters, but, I still have questions about the load will do at 1,000 yards. Which is on the agenda for tomorrow.

49 Nurse, sounds like a Texas Star, one of my favorite targets. At the club where I'm still not a member but shoot matches, best ever was two Texas Stars behind a Polish Plate Rack, which is a linear version of the same idea (as plates fall, weight imbalance starts to spin the whole thing). Crazy fun, lots of rounds to clean the whole set-up (16 rounds, I think).

51 Wow, did those M1 instructions bring back memories. The sling stuff is still mostly incomprehensible yet. Of all the training with that weapon, sling use has always been the worst to get used to. The rest, close order drill, actual shooting and maintenance was (to me) neat.

Posted by: Weasel at May 25, 2025 07:39 PM (TLedf)

64 There is of course a correct way to clean a Texas Star. If it's set up with one plate at 12 o'clock, very quick shots to the plates at 10 and 2 usually leave it pretty stable, then you knock off the top one, star just sort of wobbles with the two lower plates going back and forth.

Mind you I've never been quick/accurate enough to do this, but the better/more serious guys at the matches almost always do it.

Now if the star is stable at the start with no plate at 12, it's trickier.

67 I've pondered the full M1 sling instructions and messed around with it a bit, but never really adopted it. I do use the sling in a simpler way, support arm winged out a bit to provide tension to the "platform", when shooting off-hand. Usually helps. SEAL buddy taught me to shift weight back, hips a bit behind the legs, that often helps with stability too.

68 Y'all might enjoy this story. I'm in England and hired a driver yesterday because I was visiting a library about an hour from London. Our driver has lived in England 25 years but was originally from Afghanistan. He loves England, his children have great jobs, his wife is very involved in the local garden club (a serious thing in England). He is muslim by ancestry, but he says the biggest problem in this country is very tribal non-assimilating Pakistanis, Pashtuns to be specific. He gets death threats constantly, many from recent arriving relatives.

So he joined a gun club, even though he cannot own a gun personally, at least legally, and he is learning to shoot. He says life is too precious to let the worst people intimidate you into living in the worst possible way. Don't know for sure but I believe he may have recently suffered a sad canoeing accident.

73 In retail gun newz, a fairly large CA sporting goods chain (Big 5 Sports) no longer has firearms, just airguns. Haven't been in one in ages, went there for some gym clothing, clerk said they dropped gunz about a year ago or so. I was impressed that they had them at all. Mark-up on guns is good, but the hassles of course are substantial.

I don't know if all locations have discontinued guns - Big 5 is in rural areas too. Maybe it's like Walmart, where it depends on location and market.

If you still want to have a replica trench gun, Bull Creek Arms can take an existing Winchester Model 97 or Winchester Model 12 (provided by you) and convert it to trench gun configuration. Pricing starts at around $1k. If you want to do this, I recommend sending in a well worn (but still functional) example to have it converted.

Posted by: rhomboid at May 25, 2025 08:06 PM (1m82a)

This is a high priority for DOD right now. Benelli has put forward a modification of their M4 platform as a last ditch point defense against drones fitted with optics and an extended magazine. Twenty or so years ago, the USMC (DOD proponent for shotguns) tested the AA-12, a full auto shotgun firing FRAG-12 rounds. The FRAG-12 were effectively mini-grenades inside a 3" magnum shotgun cartridge. Fitted with deployable fins and a fuse, it turned the AA-12 into a rapid fire (if heavy) mini-grenade launcher with a rate of fire of about 350 rounds per minute and a range of 200 meters. Cost led the USMC to turn it down. If the FRAG-12 ammo can be fitted with a proximity/AAA fuse, this could be a viable anti-drone weapon. The old "Future Weapons" show had a segment featuring the AA-12 and FRAG-12.

Both sides have introduced fiber-optic cable reels to make soft-kill methods (jammers) completely ineffective for drones at the front line/FEBA. Hard-kill point defense against these things is a big problem right now w/o a ready solution. Note that one side has targeted Ivan's factories making both microprocessors and fiber optic cable in the latest round of behind the line drone strikes. That should give you a pretty good idea of just how important it is to one side to take Ivan's fiber optic guided drones off the battlefield.

Grateful, the trench gun bayonets can be attached while still sheathed in their scabbards. Also, for shooting, you might not want to attach it because it does add weight on the front end of the weapon. Check out a picture of a M1917 bayonet for the trench gun. You'll see that it's really a sword that happens to have a shotgun attached.

DoB was good enough to notice she was diving into the shot as she pressed the trigger. And able to correct.

That's why off the shelf shotguns aren't the solution to FPV drones with fiber optic cable guidance. Better ammo for the shotguns is necessary. As discussed up-thread, the FRAG-12 ammo system could serve as the basis for an anti-drone round if fitted with an anti-aircraft type fuse.

229 Nothing makes me feel older than seeing my MOS outmoded and kind of forgotten. 1991-94, we were hot shit, one of the first classes to qualify for MLRS. We replaced the Lance, something replaced us and I think there's some version of HIMARRS that replaced us all.

234 I was a medic in a Lance missile battalion. Couple of buddies were Stinger guys, but the Army had pulled Stingers from the arsenal, so one guy became the mail clerk, and the others were short-timers anyway, so they became duty drivers and staff duty phone jockeys. About the time I was short, our battalion was being absorbed into another unit, but the Lance missile was most certainly No Longer a Thing.

We sent the last DPICM rounds for MLRS/HIMARS to the Ukrainians before they aged out. Ivan has learned the hard way about "Steel Rain" too. Ukrainians haven't been shy about posting video showing "Steel Rain" coming down on Ivan when his officers are dumb enough to have him assemble in mass formations.

240 Need one of those old 4 gauge shotguns built to auto load with shells filled with 2 shot or 4 buck for drones. All you really have to do is mess up a rotor and they are all but uncontrolable.
We trained at NTC in the 90's to shoot down a drone but to simulate a fighter. After around 20,000 50 call rounds from M2's we hit it 3 times and the pilot was thinking we hadn't hit it. He never noticed. I envied that job for months. Motherfucker got paid to build and fly model airplanes.

I'm guessing they didn't bother to mention that nuclear power has been operating in this country for 70 years without a single fatality to a member of the general public, and significantly fewer fatalities to workers than any other energy source, including solar and wind (people fall off roofs and towers, yo).

Fortunately, neither Trump nor an increasingly large proportion of the American people give a shit what drivel See BS "News" might spout.

Yeah, I'm sure that would violate every game law there is, but it's amusing to think about.

"Not sporting"?

Nothing against those who enjoy sport hunting, but for me hunting has always been for meat.

I'm just glad I don't have to rely on it any more. Things were different when I was a kid. We had some store-bought meat, but those squirrels and rabbits were a nice addition to the menu.

The new generation of nuclear reactors are supposedly civilianized models of the current nuclear reactors powering USN nuclear subs. Increasing the number of reactors produced should reduce (crosses fingers) the individual unit price of the reactors for everyone, including the USN.

252 > Need one of those old 4 gauge shotguns built to auto load with shells

A friend's grandpa had an 8 gauge hanging on the wall when I was a kid. It was a monster. I don't recall ever seeing it fired (might've been illegal for hunting by then, might also have been an old-school Damascus barrel, the kind that likes to peel back like Elmer Fudd's gun if you try to put a modern round through them).

I can only imagine a 4.

In the late 80s, I knew a guy who knew the guy who built the drones for NTC. He claimed that a self destruct charge was built into the drones, and every now and then they would blow one up to keep the troops from being discouraged by their inability to hit them. Was it true? I dunno.

261 Late but, guns!

Did get another 100 rounds through my new G26 slide. Accuracy was good for such a short barrel and grip.

Did have several light primer strikes with S&B ammo. Also ran into the same problem with my G30, which I've been carrying all week which is...alarming.

So doing a detail clean tomorrow. We'll see if that fixes the light primer strike. In the mean time, the PSA Micro Dagger is on deck for EDC.
