Fen, he was a fascinating figure. Served as governor of both Tennessee and Texas. He lost the latter position in 1861 due to his opposition to secession. He was also a member of the Cherokee tribe.

There's a funny story about him when he was on his deathbed. All the newspapermen were gathered around his house awaiting news of his death. Now, Sam Houston hated newspaper reporters, so they were quite surprised when someone came out of the house and said that Houston wanted two reporters to come to his bedside. The two reporters went into Sam's bedroom, and he requested that one of them stand on each side of the bed. When they asked him why, Sam responded because he wanted to die like Christ (i.e., between two criminals).

Dunno, but all the other pictures I can find with Houston wearing headgear show a sort of hybrid slouch/cowboy hat.

On the other hand, he was born in 1793, so he might've still had a tricorn or two hanging around the wardrobe.

Posted by: rickb223 at May 23, 2025 09:34 AM (l6jBh)"

The main reason they didn't was because Houston knew they had gotten very lucky to catch Santa Anna with his pants down (literally) and that Mexico, and its remaining armies, still vastly outnumbered them. They needed a negotiated peace where the Mexicans agreed to leave for good, not something that would spark an even bigger military reprisal.

Posted by: polynikes at May 23, 2025 09:56 AM (VofaG)

69 Interesting and effective painting. The background and sky is almost gentle with its soft, natural colors. To me, the horse sets the mood: dark, energetic, ready and eager for battle against the enemy forces after the Alamo and the massacres committed by the Mexican army. The soldiers on the right are a hint of the fierce battle to come. By contrast, Sam Houston seems sort of generic with the stereotype heroic pose and gestures. I'm sure that wasn't intended by Thomas but that is my reaction. There is a hint of Jacques-Louis David influence here. Bet the painting was a hit in Texas.

Check out some of Thomas' other paintings. They are beautifully done and reflect an emotional quieter sense.

106 The artist, born in Texas and lived in France for a while before returning to the states, lived from 1868 to 1956. Think of all the changes in those almost 90 years: aftermath of the Civil War, the first powered flight, two world wars, depression, roaring twenties, the US becoming the world power. It would be interesting to see what he painted later in life versus his time in France.

Boone's signature role -- but he also did villains beautifully. See him in Hombre with Paul Newman and Big Jake with John Wayne. Recently I watched a 1953 noir called Fear No More in which he plays a homicide cop who is slowly descending into madness. He had me hating the cop. Great work.

In summary, tax relief for Social Security recipients is happening in part through the $4,000 deduction, but it’s not a full elimination of taxes on benefits, is income-limited, and only applies to those 65 and older, despite Social Security benefits starting at 62. The Senate still needs to approve the bill, and changes could occur.

This morning, with this, I did a very rough back-of-the-envelope guesstimate of what my taxes might be for this year. If I send some quarterly payments to the IRS, I may only owe $300 or so next April. April of '27 will be a whole new ball game -- but that is two years away.

========

I keep bringing up a scene in Steven Spielberg's The Post where Tom Hanks as Ben Bradlee explains that in order to make up for being too nice to JFK, a president he was personally friends with, he's going to be really mean to Nixon, a president he hates.

And this is what makes him a good journalist.

That no one involved in the production saw it as an admission of deep partisanship has always flabbergasted me.

If there is any interest in actually making up for this, it's burning all of the sources who told you he was fine. Even then, you still shouldn't be trusted, but at least those sources will have to face public backlash for what they did behind the scenes. It's kind of a bare minimum.

For the 1893 World’s Fair in Chicago, Thomas was commissioned to paint a portrait of Sam Houston for the Texas building. This was a huge equestrian portrait that, following the fair was displayed in the Paris Salon of 1898. In 1920 it was presented by Col. And Mrs. Francis Drake to the city of Houston and finally hung in the San Jacinto Museum.

Sam fought under General Andrew Jackson at the Battle of Talladega. Dave Crokett, too, was there.

In 1814, Sam Houston was wounded by an arrow in the upper thigh during the Battle of Horseshoe Bend along the Tallapoosa River in Alabama. Maddened by the pain, Houston ordered a comrade at swordpoint to pull the arrow out. The ugly wound never completely healed, troubling Houston for the rest of his life.

Maybe not as good as Trump Tower's, but...(chuckle) a good bit of cultural exchange. The Mexicans gave us tacos, and we gave 'em lead. A lotta lead, believe me. But, things are going better now, thank goodness, and the Mexican president, Sheinbaum's her name, great, tough woman...we still have a few, uh, differences, but we're working things out, and I think we're all going to profit in the end. Their ratings, not the envy of the world pre-election, have cratered and have no come back despite being the voice of the opposition, something that almost always finds an audience.

Something about the 2024 election broke the connection between these networks and about half of their audiences. Biden's health? Kamala's chances? Pure depression at the loss? I don't know, but I assume it all contributed.

His apology tour. Is it leading to increased ratings? No. It's leading to increased derision.

Don't know what they do now but we got a good amount of Rhode Island history in grade school during the 50s and early 60s. It started with the state being founded because Roger Williams pissed off the Pilgrim fathers, then King Philips War, piracy, British occupation during the Revolution, the first synagogue in the country, privateers at different times, Washington's Farewell Address, etc. There was a lot of history for such a small place.

Fourth grade we had Indiana history for both semesters. High school American history covered some Indiana history for maybe a couple of weeks. Teacher said "you should have learned all of the state history in 4th grade so we will just review it. If you want more info, the 4th grade textbook is in the library."

If you ever visit Starbase, TX down in deepest South Texas, you will go down Hwy 4 out of Brownsville towards Boca Chica. The Palmetto Ranch Battlefield will be found on your right about halfway to Starbase.

When I was just a pup (late 60s, if memory serves), a tropical storm washed away a lot of the beach down at Boca Chica, uncovering a strange pattern of stakes and other perfectly placed markers. Turns out that it was the Union Army camp that was established just after the troops landed, but before the battle began.
