The Ace of Spades Pet Thread [scampydog]

doggo best life.JPG

Good afternoon and welcome to the almost world famous Ace of Spades Pet Thread. I'm filling in for our talented friend and Pet Thread caretaker, K.T.

Happy Memorial Day weekend. If you're firing up the grill, be sure a few morsels accidentally hit the ground - or just go ahead and hand them off to your fluffy, four-legged frenz.

Please check your politics at the door. Don't worry - they'll still be there when the thread is over.

*****

Let's get right to the Pet Morons. Misanthropic Humanitarian (ONT Cob Emeritus) is goofing off in parts unknown - likely untangling fishing line and palling around with an otter named Albert. MisHum passed along the pictures/emails below.

Our first contribution looks like the happiest doggo ever!

Here is Psmith on vacation at the dog sitters house. He just loves going there. When I drop him off he just runs into her house. Not sure he misses me at all!

Happy Doggo Babysit.JPG

Next up is a pet adjacent fren from Turn 2. What a handsome pup!

This is my down-the-street neighbor's new puppy, Duke. He's a chocolate lab. He's been up to our place a few times to play with our golden and micro-mini golden doodle. Typical lab, everyone (and dog) is his best friend and just wants to play.

Duke the pup.JPG

Big thanks for the notes and pictures of the Horde doggos. A couple of cuties!

*****

We may be Morons, but that is not a pet in the picture below. Image (several years old) is from a trail camera at the Acres de Scampy - a determined looking kitty. Drove a tractor down that trail earlier today. No bobcat sighting. Did clip a tree with an implement - used bucket on other tractor to straighten things out. Back in business!

determined kitty.JPG

*****

There are a surprising amount of pet artists out on the interwebz. Some very talented people.

In this link,
are some cool black and white drawings. The artist also has some nice paintings. Take a look. Any Pet Morons have art of their pets?

*****

Cute kitty deserves some love.

*****

I don't know...these doggos must have found their hoomans stash of gummies. That's not how it goes in the SD house. Anyone have a classic pet bath story?

*****

How about some awesome cat names? Moron worthy cat names? Names with attitude to match cat life? What say you, experienced kitty folk.

Aristotle
Zorro
Loki
Cleopatra
Shakespeare

Lady Fluffington - Destroyer of Shelf Objects
Dutchess Softpaws

Or some wordplay or puns...because puns.
Moewdonna
Clawdia Schiffer

*****

Right in the feelz.

Baby fawn curls up and waits for mom to return.

Visitors to a library in Michigan got an extra-sweet surprise recently - a newborn fawn curled up right outside the main entrance!

*****

This hungry little cutie made friends with me while we were on vacation a month or so ago. Some fish may have accidentally fallen off my plate and onto the ground.

Hungry cutie.JPG

*****

That winds up the Pet Thread. Please send your prayers and well wishes to K.T. for a full and speedy recovery. We hope to see her back soon - healthy, happy, doing the content like only she can - and once again working her Pet Thread magic.

Thanks for stopping by, and enjoy your holiday weekend!

10 We have a Loki. Loves everybody and really wants to cuddle with another kitty when going to sleep.

My fav was a golden silk-haired stray whom we called Clawed. He arrived here on a very wet Saturday (I think), pouring rain and we fed him under one of the cars. The next morning, still pouring, I opened the front door to inspect the rain and there he was, still under the car. I took pity and said something like 'Well come on' and he was in the house in a flash. One could pick him up with two hands and swing him between legs and he loved it. He would wake up from a nap, go to each human for 5 minutes and then go out. Loved him so much. Hit by a car. First cat death I cried. Now I cry for every one.

Purrcy - still with us.

Sparkle - a chocolate, had burns on her legs still with bits of carbon. I suspect she jumped into a dumpster for food and there was a fire in there. She went up to a friend's car and sort of asked for help. Friend called us. Spent time at the vet. She healed up and became a sleeping buddy for me. Long gone now.

11 Awww! The pets! Our trainer is coming here at 3p for a training session away from her place. With the wonderous ball of fluff Saijo!

Cat names- well, mine are Kovu, which is the lead character in The Lion King 2 , Scar’s son, and means scar in Swahili (He is a Savannah, he has a lot of serval, and servals are from Africa), and my other cat is Sabi, which is short for Wasabi. Also a Savannah so zero ties from his name to his breed. The most amazing kitty ever, who crossed the rainbow bridge and was my first Savannah, was Nyah. It means purpose in Swahili, but also meow in Japanese. I will never be able to have another Nyah, she was truly that special.

31 Afternoon, Pet Folken,

The "Pet the Cat" video: That red tabby with white is a noisy and persistent beast, huh?

the link with the B & W animal drawings has some good stuff. The initial link was all dogs but there is a page with custom cat paintings. One of them looks like a Norwegian or Maine Coon cat.

Little Dagny Sophia the Siberian is becoming more sociable all the time. Since her flea treatment, she has been sleeping with me every night and most of my afternoon naps. It could be she has suddenly formed an attachment to the bed or the light blanket, but she curls up right next to me almost every time.

35 I find Sphynx cats, the hairless creatures, adult or young, to be ugly. Whenever I've seen one at a cat show I sheer off from talking to its breeder, since I don't have any compliments about the cat and don't want to be insulting.

Remember there was an episode of Friends where Rachel adopts a Sphynx? After getting it home, she finds it unfriendly and difficult, and ends up telling someone that it's "a cat that looks like a hand."

42 Cat names . . . Arizona the red tabby because he was big, sandy, and prickly like a cactus. Tatiana Romanova the Siberian girl cat because it was the only female Russian name I knew that I found attractive. Wolf for the big black shaggy male because he was long and rangy, very social, and wolves do come in black. (Besides, *anybody* can name his black cat "Midnight" or "Shadow.")

Stirling, the current black, got his name from a pipe tobacco I'd never tried but liked the name of. (Though I tell people he's named after a British race car dirver of the 1950s, Stirling Moss.) Dagny Sophia the little Siberian got hers from our poster here called "dagny, first of her name," and from her mother's name.

I've always wanted to name cats after big Western states like Montana and Dakota, or Mexican states like Durango and Sonora. Never have, though.

Wildlife is not to be tolerated in a city, cute as it may be, as it poses a danger to pets and kids and also a source of disease from ticks and fleas. Either relocate them or shoot them.

I am going to try to sit with him on the couch, propped up like in bed and watch some anime with him. He doesn’t care about the anime, he wants to see me. When he’s had enough of me he’ll get down, and the little butterball, Abbie the Tabby will get up. She never misses a meal. Unlike Mittens, she’ll watch anime if it has a lot of action, like fight scenes. Not sure what she makes of it.

One of the other Friends asked Rachel about the Sphynx, "Why is it inside out?"

The breed just doesn't look like a cat and it doesn't look healthy to me.

78 Just pulled tick out of puppy's ear. That's her second. We're now tied this spring. Seems to be bad year for ticks.

79 Time for me to feed the furry thugs, and then shave before Miss Linda comes over. Dinner here tonight, I think, plus a viewing of Second Hand Lions w/ Robert Duvall and Michael Caine.

80 Aharen-san and Raido (Boyfriend-kun) make such a cute couple, both differently weirdos, but in a good way. The complement each other. This is the class trip to Tokyo where their group visits the Disneyland Stand-in and Raido forgets his ticket. Heartwarming.

Reminds me of our first cat. I slept with thick terry cloth hand towel by me to cover shoulder when he'd start kneading.

82 My mini dachshund is named Toby. The grandkids picked out the name. He has a number of nicknames though, Tobers and Toberson being the most common.

Arizona was known also as Plumus Tailius Arizonicus.

Nothing so grand for Wolf and now Stirling; each of them has been dubbed "Big Black," and Dagny "Little Gray."

Great movie. Only time I've ever heard Michael Caine do a dialect other than his own Cockney or posh Southern English.

84 Mittens is still recharging next to my (bad) leg. It’s going to be awhile. I didn’t realize his battery was so low.

When Stirling was little, he'd bound onto the bed in the morning and milk-tread my inner elbow. Moving a blanket or something to cover my skin didn't work; he refused to tread that. It had to be flesh. Now that he's huge, I'm glad he doesn't want to do that any more.

87 >>My mini dachshund is named Toby

A mini dachshund?

When I lived in Boston a group of dachshund owners would bring their little hot dogs to the Boston Common on Saturdays in the Fall and put up a portable fencing and let them run wild. For what passes as running wild with dachshunds. Like a hundred of them.

They were adorable. I never realized they were so many different types. Drew big crowds.

89 The DL stand-in visit isn’t until their time off tomorrow so now they’re on a bus tour of Tokyo. The guide is pointing all the “trees” in Tokyo. Tokyo Hightree, Tokyo Goesbytree, Tokyo Closebytree, and the newly constructed Sprytree. And the bright red one is Tokyo Ruddytree (the original Tokyo Tower). A lot of trees in Tokyo, huh?

91 Their tour pamphlet has details of the newest “tree” currently under construction. Mittens is still sleeping but twitching a little in his dream. Thank goodness for the tea towel!

95 The glyph for “Empty” keeps flying out of Raido-kun’s ticket holder with sound effects. Mittens got up and thought about going to the far end of the couch. He is being persuaded to lie back down and sleep some more by my stroking him, purring ensues. He’s not quite convinced. He’s settling down a little bit off from my leg (too hot?). He’s thinking about putting his head down - there - he’s done it.

Posted by: NemoMeImpuneLacessit at May 24, 2025 05:47 PM (ZVgZ4)

96 The ticket is back in his luggage at the hotel. He tells everyone to go ahead without him, he’ll catch up. Will he? The butterball, Abbie, has come up on my right side (good leg) and got offended that I wouldn’t let her chew on my pajama ties. She’s decided to forgive me; no, it’s just another try for the pajama ties. I decide to brush her. For a short hair she still has a lot to shed for summer. Mittens objects to my paying attention to another cat and decamps for the far end of the couch. Abbie leaves. I resume the anime.

Posted by: NemoMeImpuneLacessit at May 24, 2025 05:58 PM (ZVgZ4)

97 Raido apologizes to Aharen that he won’t be able to see the parade with her. Aharen is really disappointed (you can’t see it in her face, of course not!) but she forgives Raido and consoles him. “Everyone makes mistakes, what’s done is done; you’ve always helped me when I made a mistake,” and so forth. She rubs his head while saying this (he was bowing in apology, so she can reach him). “Don’t worry. I’ll be waiting.”

Mittens is still on the couch with me but at the far end. Abbie has departed.

Posted by: NemoMeImpuneLacessit at May 24, 2025 06:07 PM (ZVgZ4)

98 All their friends are supportive. So off he goes.

Mittens is still here, but not Abbie, who I just saw slinking by…

Raido finds his ticket in his suitcase where it fell out. His two teachers come by to check on him, but the more serious one has bad news: the train that would take him back to the park is out of service. Meanwhile the gang is choosing animal ears to wear. Aharen-san picks mouse ears, of course. They all pick ears that match their personalities.

100 I never understood what a good cat Mittens is. He’s come back close enough to pet but not right up against me. I am stroking him slowly but continually. He is purring. Contentment. The show goes on.

Posted by: NemoMeImpuneLacessit at May 24, 2025 06:20 PM (ZVgZ4)

101 The parade passes. The friends and Aharen have drinks at an outdoor cafe. Somebody say ”I hope Raido-kun will be along soon,’” and looks at her phone. Oh no, the train is out of service! It hits Aharen like a bolt out of the blue. You can’t see it in her demeanor, of course. The train should be up and running in an hour though. Will Raido make it back in time?

Posted by: NemoMeImpuneLacessit at May 24, 2025 06:27 PM (ZVgZ4)

102 I’m willowed aren’t I? Never mind, Raido makes it back with the help of his teachers who rent a car to drive him. The not-serious teacher is at the wheel. Let’s just say she “drives like Steve McQueen”. The teachers say they have to monitor students at the park for bad behavior, but he can catch a lift, if he wants. He does …Aharen-san drags Raido-kun away from the others as soon as he shows up. Then Aharen and Raido have maximum fun in minimum time following a route Aharen worked out with some help from her friends. All’s well that ends well … Finis.
