Eight years after Trump’s 2016 Victory, any Company Blindsided by Tariffs on Chinese Imports is Willfully Negligent

I’ve spent most of my career working with private and small businesses. I still do. There is not one successful or well-run business with whom I’m familiar that is suddenly caught off guard by the latest round of tariffs on Chinese imports. But such companies exist, apparently, and the anti-Trump media loves to tell the sad stories of these companies being blindsided by the tariffs imposed on their Chinese imports.

Donald Trump campaigned in 2016 on de-coupling from China, to be aided by the use of tariffs. It was seven years ago, in March of 2018, that Donald Trump first imposed a round of tariffs on Chinese imports. He made it clear that the initial 25% tariff was just a start in his endeavor for the U.S. to fully eliminate its reliance on China as a trade partner on whom we had a dangerous reliance.

After 2018, it would take an almost willful blindness for a company not to have taken actions to mitigate the risk of relying on China as a sole supplier.

The Wall Street Journal ran this sob story a few days ago: “How Tariffs Are Crushing Small Businesses: Owners are laying off staff and tapping personal savings, hoping to hold out until a trade deal with China; an $8,752 fee on a $5,649 order” [WSJ – 5/11/2025]

Around the country, small businesses that import goods made in China are taking actions—big and small—to try to outlast the current 145% tariff regime on items from that country. But many are worried that their companies won’t survive.

“Nobody in power seems to care about small business,” said Scott Anderson, owner of 5 Star North, which works with Chinese manufacturers to make its products ranging from acrylic markers to tiki torches. “At this point the only option I see is selling out the rest of what we have and shutting our doors.”

Sourcing exclusively from China is a concentration risk unto itself, without even factoring in its authoritarian government, slave labor, and beating war drums. Add to that the supply chain bottlenecks, canal backups, port problems, etc that have affected overseas shipping, and there are numerous ways that concentrated reliance on China should have caused indigestion. But on top of all that, it has been seven years since tariffs were first levied on China. An explicit purpose of that tariff was to incentivize companies such as this one to stop sourcing its tiki torches from China. Whether Trump was in the right or wrong doesn’t change the reality of the tariff regimen. The writing has been on the wall that this company needed to de-couple itself from China.

Charles Gasparino of the New York Post recently tweeted: “Breaking: In talking to sources who run small businesses the pause w/ China came just as their companies were on the precipice of disaster since they source so much of their material from China and the containers coming from China were coming back empty. If you want to know why we were as desperate for a deal as the Chinese, it’s because small businesses — a key MAGA constituency— was about to get crushed.”

Again, I know the owners of many small businesses who have spent the past eight years disengaging from China. They are not about to get crushed. Many are booming due to re-shoring.

Hampton Prescott had an excellent response to Mr. Gasparino: “I feel for people in this predicament, but if after Trade War 1.0, Covid, and general evolution of the CCP into a serious threat you didn’t diversify your supply chains away from China, then this is on you for failing to hedge against a substantial business risk.”

Very well put.

9 Peter Zeihan, who I've been ignoring lately because of his anti-Trumpism and refusal to acknowledge the catastrophe that was the Biden admin, thinks China is about to descend into chaos and warlordism. He's usually a bit hysterical, but whatever is happening in China isn't going to be good for business. Thus, if you didn't already decouple, things were going to get hard regardless.

45 BTW, the Minnesota Supreme Court just legalized women going bare-breasted in public.

The court noted:

“As other courts have recognized, the idea that female breasts are primarily sexual is rooted in stereotypes.”

Yeah, that's why Paleolithic cave painters frequently depicted large-breasted women.

"Stereotypes."

The downside, of course, is that the only women who will take their shirts off in public are the women who you absolutely don't want to take their shirts off in public.

The upside, of course, will be that it will fun to see what happens to the first woman in Little Mogadishu in Minneapolis who tries that.

Fiiiiiiiiiiine.

I'll bear the terrible shame of having been willowed.

I don't know how I'll do it. Many men and women throughout history have been broken upon the Wheel of Willow Shame, but somehow I'll survive.

Fortunately, in Our Enlightened Society, Willow Abusers are no longer forced to trudge through the streets barefoot, dressed in a blue Speedo and a Tricorn Hat while onlookers pelt them with Tapir Poop.

How? Oh, how shall I seek forgiveness! How?

Anyway...

Tariff uncertainty tells them to start using American suppliers. And yes, I expect this is also part of Trump's plan

84 2018 25% tariffs were on furniture and some other products. Not everyone was affected by this.

Even with those tariffs, I kept production in China until 2024. Covid made international travel freaking impossible, so it was very hard to move production.

Now, obviously, I tried to make up for lost time and moved about 1/3 of my production to Vietnam now

However, here are some reasons people would keep buying from China.

1) Intertia and laziness...yes...but why?
2) China has crazy low prices. They are so low that my Vietnam suppliers complain and they sometimes can't even match them.
3) So, logically, if you buy at a higher price from Vietnam, someone is still buying from China and will win the business...
4) Some product areas China is much, much stronger than anywhere else. Electronics. magnets. Steel.
5) Why? I personally think there are playing games with subsidies and super low currency. Taiwan does the same, etc., Its kinda hard to compete against the chinese government. or any government.

So these are reasons beyond being slow and stupid why someone might keep relying on China.

Also, Mexico is close but....crime.'

85 I bet all the companies that were blind sided by Covid that used JIT inventory system still use JIT.

A small publicly-owned utility in my area definitely changed policy - it used to try to maintain lean inventories of needed equipment, but after numerous supply chain disruptions (which kept occurring long after Covid), it now acquires equipment basically whenever it can, and maintains equipment stocks designed to ride out any future disruptions.

87 The fight is not between left and right, it's between globalists and America First types. It is never so clearly exposed than it is on trade issues.

Globalists are fine with middle America being hollowed out and manufacturing sent abroad as long as it means they get cheap shit from wherever, China included. They either don't realize or don't care that this will lead to our doom. They will leave that to future generations to worry about.

The reason we had a thriving middle class after WWII was primarily because we made our own stuff and kept our money here and the middle class boomed. Contrary to what some insist, some of us boomers want our country back and thriving for the next generations. This is the greatest country in the world by far and I'm sick of us being the world's piggybank and doormat. America First.

103 One other factor: sheer laziness.

China makes it easy to find factories with alibaba. Try to find factories in Indonesia or Vietnam....its way harder.

And Chinese trading companies and factories respond quickly, have low minimums, and have a lot of experience - they can make importing so much easier for newbie or even someone with limited experience.

I've been importing since 1991, so I have the "old skills" of trying to find new suppliers. This helped in Vietnam. But for younger people, Alibaba is just so easy for people.

"convenience" - its why people buy from 7-11, too.

145 Good post, Buck. Thank you.

Thousands of ships loaded with crap sat in the oceans for months and months during C19 lockdowns. Certain supplies in stores dwindled, medical PPE dwindled, and prices went up a lot, not to mention the threat of a West Coast port strike compounding supply issues.

(The strike and related delays caused significant disruptions to supply chains, with over 85,000 containers held at major ports and potentially impacting goods worth over $5.2 billion.)

It seems it's about time we've gotten our act together. See the SBA, the State, Commerce & Labor Departments, etc.

Exactly!! This is why Trump is promoting trade and economic deals with countries in the Middle East. Some of those countries are dependent on the US for defense. We supply their arms munitions, planes, etc. Trump wants more. He want those economic ties to bind them so tightly that they will squash ANY terror pushing extremists quickly. He understands that Islam cannot be extinguished quickly but the hard line terror promotion can be. It helps to isolate Iran even more also.

You really ought to pay more attention to what Trump, Bessent and team are doing. This is one of the first things they went after and why they put tariffs on tiny South Pacific islands with almost zero population.

China has been doing this for years. A great example is Chinese steel that has been shipped through Canada and marginally "improved", usually with labeling, and then dumped in the US at low prices.

The tariffs aren't just to stop the obvious monetary issues but all unfair trade practices including 3rd country dumping. Look at what Trump is saying about the EU tariffs today. It's only partially about price policy.

195 If you want manufacturing to return to the US, give the country a competitive advantage. Have Elon build a Mega Factory to make small modular nuclear reactors that fit into 40 foot containers. Eliminate all the stupid wind and solar crap and have the government own all the reactors dispersed across the country - 3000 of them to start. That would make our electrical system bulletproof against war, terrorist attack or natural disasters. Supply all the electrical energy for free and let the local utilities charge for delivering it. If someone wanted to build a steel mill next to the reactors, they would pay next to nothing for their power - which is by far the most expensive thing about making steel (or aluminum, copper or any other metal). It would be ridiculous for companies to carry out heavy manufacturing anywhere else in the world. Of course, everyone else would get vastly reduced power bills. Like the interstate road system, a public good that benefits the overall economy is not a socialist program, but a conservative investment in the country (read F.A. Hayek).

This is true, it will have a major effect in regularizing the trade agreements, but like you say it won't solve all the problems.
The guess is the next step is to make a 10% tariff on everything incoming outside of some extremely iffy situations, and then either a form of capital control or taxation on foreign investments in the US. That is easier to enforce.
It will mean the USD will be getting weaker, but that will also help US Manufacturing.

Every business, mine included, will be facing a period of disruption because what Trump is attempting to do is not tariff the world but change how world trade is practiced. We've been living through a period of unfair trade that punished American manufacturers for decades to the benefit of countries like China and to a less extent to many other foreign countries.

I tried like hell to not do business with China for supplies I need for my business but had no choice because parts either weren't available in the US or were too expensive because every competitor was also using Chinese parts. This also had the effect of destroying US manufacturers who made those parts. Does anyone care about what they've gone through for the last 50 years?

It will take some time to sort out and we will all experience some measure of pain but if we don't do this our economy will continue in a death spiral. A bit of pain now or a lot of pain down the road. Those are the options.

Countries go to war when the balance of payments collapse. If there is a chance of getting paid then countries prefer to negotiate their differences.

I have seen arguments that WWI was related to the financial bubble that the British Empire was facing in India, and the German state was having some issues with its own finances.
I will tell you that the EU and Britain today would dearly love an excuse to devalue and default on their debts and going to war with Russia would solve their problems, especially if the US footed the bill.

262 China has global ambitions that transcend trade. They want to dictate terms globally for a lot of things and there are a number issues with that. Taiwan is one. And it's a real thorn in China's side. Especially in Xi's side. He's an ambitious guy. Backing down would be step one in his political demise. Probably his actual demise too.

He'll make a move sooner or later. Likely when the Democrats take the White House again.

263 I was under the impression that WW1 was, essentially, a series of mistakes. Europe, uncharacteristically, was governed by a collection of idiots and managed to stumble their way into a war and then pride, and the fact that it was largely other people's kids dying, made them continue.

That was certainly a factor, but the governments of Germany, Russia, and France, were all reading the demographic and economic tea leaves. That was the real cause.

And Taiwan and Nvidia have just in the last few months publicly stated they are spending hundreds of billions to move some of that chip manufacturing to the US. Trump also got trillions in commitments from his Middle East trip.

Posted by: LASue at May 23, 2025 11:06 AM

Grok reply: https://bit.ly/3F6JNXD

Yes, you're correct. Recent reports indicate that the U.S. tariffs on Chinese imports have been reduced to a total of 30%, which includes a 10% base tariff plus a 20% tariff related to China's alleged failure to curb fentanyl flows. This is a significant reduction from the 145% tariff rate that was previously imposed in April 2025. The reduction to 30% is part of a 90-day trade truce agreed upon by the U.S. and China, effective from May 14, 2025. This deal was negotiated in Geneva and involves both countries lowering tariffs, with China reducing its tariffs on U.S. goods to 10% from 125%. However, additional tariffs, such as existing Section 301 or "most favored nation" tariffs, may still apply, potentially increasing the effective rate above 30% for some goods due to tariff stacking.

Very few smartphones are fully manufactured in the USA due to global supply chains and cost considerations. However, Purism's Liberty Phone and Librem 5 USA are notable exceptions, marketed as being entirely manufactured in the USA with a focus on privacy and security. The Liberty Phone, an upgraded version of the Librem 5 USA, features 4GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, but it comes with a high price tag of around $2,000 compared to the Chinese-made Librem 5 at $799.

300 When is someone going to ask why Apple feels entitled to an 80% markup on iPhones?

Not saying gov should regulate, or it should be "unfair", but Apple shouldn't be moaning, either. If they want to command the brand loyalty, they should be willing to make a gesture to their base. But maybe they're too cool for that.

If they don't pull their head out on AI pretty soon, Elon might fix them real good.
