Top Story

AMD has officially announced the eagerly-awaited 9060 XT graphics card, arriving June 5 and starting at $299. (Tom's Hardware)

Though that's for the 8GB model which you don't want to buy. The 16GB model costs $349, which is well worth it given that it's reportedly faster than the competing 5060 Ti from Nvidia and the 16GB model of that card costs $429.

And it also leaves the newly announced 5060 (non-Ti) dead in the water. It also costs $299 for 8GB of RAM, but it's slower than the 5060 Ti.

One shortcoming is that the 9060 XT only offers three display outputs. That's a bit odd because almost everything offers four outputs, and professional cards can offer six.
AMD also announced the Radeon AI Pro R9700, which is the Radeon 9070 XT with double the RAM. (Tom's Hardware)

And probably more than double the price.

Nividia did everything possible to prevent anyone properly reviewing this card. And it's not actually that bad, except for the fact that with only 8GB of RAM it can fail to run more demanding games at all.

10 I just woke up after falling asleep at 6:00 p.m. Now what am I supposed to do with myself? I watched the entire Google IO conference keynote and we be screwed. It was non-stop AI from beginning to end. My hot take is Google has AI ambitions that if realized will fundamentally transform society and that they plan to make you pay for it through the nose so to speak. I'm pretty sure every other tech company has the same ambition. Not yeah! The fourth Great Wave of computing (the others are PCs, internet, and mobile) has begun and nothing is going to be the same.

28 One of my blessings from yesterday was having the Bible study at the senior center. They are so sweet. It's like having other very nice mothers. They always thank me for coming. This is not something people at the church normally do. They signed a card for a lady in my congregation who lives there who is in rehab. It will mean a lot to her.

You might like a book I have read several times if you haven't read it It is by a monk who lived in France during the 1600s. He wasn't trying to write a book. He just wrote letters of spiritual guidance to various people and they got published after his death. He did simple things all for the love of God, ( He worked In The monastery kitchens) and like you was a devout and humble man. It is called "The Practice of The presence of God" by Brother Lawrence. You could probably get it online but I'm not a fan of online books

Affinity Photo 2 is excellent software. If you are familiar with Photoshop/Photoshop Express, you can be up and running within minutes. Affinity lacks some of the more advanced features found in Photoshop, but for the core things it's all there. I strongly suspect AP V3 will bring it closer to parity with Photoshop. The use cost is you will have to relearn certain workflows and naming conventions. This is not a huge concern but it will mess you up. Plus no subscriptions costs (Photoshop Express is a subscription service now after the first year I think).

Because Adobe owns the professional world It makes complete sense to pay the freight if you're making money with their tools or collaborating in a larger work environment. For the rest of us schlubs AP V2 should be on your short list for for photo editing software.

I rate this as mostly true. Here's a conundrum: My MacBook Air laptop has 4 GB, but has operated for years without a bobble, even playing YooToob vids without a hitch. The iMac, the same age, has 8 GB. Yet it sometimes hesitates on some websites (like Amazon), giving me that rolling rainbow which is Apple's version of the MS whirling circle. I've done a CCleaner run on both; I generally visit the same websites on both.

Is it that the laptop is running version 11.7 of their operating system ("Big Sur"), and the iMac has 10.15 ("Catalina")? Should I upgrade to Big Sur on the iMac?

Yes. My theory of schlub computing is if your hardware and software meets your needs, keep it updated as much as possible and ride it into the ground. Ride it into the ground means you should replace you stuff every 5 to 10 years.

AP, I got the Macs for free, computers which were considered obsolete (after 3 years!) at my long-time employers. So any life I've gotten out of them has been gravy. I have two Win laptops, and I'm considering shifting the older one to Linux and learning that as a mental exercise.

From my 'Net research, apparently upgrading to Big Sur on an older iMac is not a good idea due to hardware limitations. Which I suppose includes the RAM Big Sur needs (but then the MacBook has half the RAM and does fine). My plan is to add another 8GB to the desktop and see what happens.

I think you're referring to Windows going into a sleep mode. Originally sleep sucked balls and had a propensity of waking up and draining the PC's battery. Plus generating so much heat it could set fire to it. Today that situation is no longer the case with sleep, It works remarkably well. However, since I'm a reactionary I use hibernate as my default way of shutting down a machine.

My local and excellent computer shop charges $100.00 to install a SSD into a Mac/PC. This includes reinstalling the OS. The cost of the SSD is extra. Budget $100.00 or less for that. I do my own work - it isn't that difficult. You might give it a try; you can always take it to the shop if needed.

Generally concur. However, the Office subscription includes 1TB of OneDrive storage. The family version allows for 5 or 6 users where each gets its own 1TB of OneDrive storage. In addition each user can install office on multiple machines. If that fits how you use your machines that is a fair deal. If not, there is always the Office perpetual license or LibreOffice. Lots of options.

I used to be a somewhat savvy user. Then I had to switch to Windows 3.1 at work and click on "icons" to do stuff. I don't know anything anymore about using 'puters.

I lived all that. I still live in my command line shell for lots of things. But the idea of hacking modern UIs over the fence is is inconceivable to me. Modern computing is light years ahead of what was state of the art in the 80s and 90s.
