Howdy Hordelings! The Monday ONT is here for your nighttime enjoyment. Step on in and see what's in store for you. Regulars - you know what to do. Lurkers - please don't let the regulars scare you into silence. The ONT encourages delurking!

Heads Up!

How much time do you spend looking at your phone or tablet? Hopefully not enough for this to happen!

25-Year-Old Man Develops ‘Dropping Head Syndrome’ by Looking at His Phone Too Much

doof-dropped-head.jpg

A 25-year-old Japanese man who spent most of his time looking down at his phone eventually became unable to raise his own head and was diagnosed with ‘dropping head syndrome’.

The rare case report published a couple of years ago in the medical journal JOS Case Reports detailed the disturbing consequences of holding one’s head bent down for hours on end over long periods of time. The patient, a 25-year-old Japanese man who spent most of his time playing on his phone, had developed a large bulge at the back of his neck and could no longer lift his own head using his neck muscles. Before seeking medical help, the man had reportedly experienced serious neck pains and had difficulty swallowing food, which caused him to lose weight rapidly. Eventually, his neck became s weak due to the unnatural position that he became unable to lift his head.

***

Initially, doctors tried treating his dropped head with collars, but after the patient complained of numbness in his neck, they decided to opt for another solution. Over a series of surgical procedures, they removed a small portion of the distorted vertebrae and scar tissue before insertig screws and metal rods into the bones of his neck to correct his posture.

Six months after undergoing the neck surgeries, the patient was able to easily lift his head and keep it in a correct position. The same was observed at a subsequent follow-up, a year after the operations. Doctors used this extreme case as a warning against the dangers of excessive smartphone usage, especially among youths.

OK everyone - look up at the ceiling, hold for a minute, and repeat every 10-15 minutes. Don't say I never did anything nice for you!

Relationship Advice from The ONT?

Yes indeed!

10 Marriage 'Cheat Codes' That Actually Work, According To Men

A recent online thread asked men to share the relationship “cheat codes” that genuinely help strengthen their marriages—and the answers were honest, heartfelt, and surprisingly simple.

These aren’t magic tricks or grand gestures; they’re small, meaningful habits that make love last.

1 . Verbally acknowledging each other’s contributions to the household.

2. Relationships aren't a zero sum game, the only way to win is when you win together so approach all disagreements with that approach.

***

5. If your wife asks you if you want ice cream, she wants ice cream.

***

7. Be each other’s biggest fan. No trash talking about the other to anyone, ever.

***

9. Being kind is better than being right.

Read the whole thing to see the rest of the top 10. Additional info for each answer, too. Good advice for most relationships - not just marriage.

Feel Good Story

Dry Cleaner Gives Away his Services to Unemployed Folks Headed to Job Interviews

The owner of a California dry cleaner is showing those down on their luck that the community wants them to succeed—so he’s ensuring they look their best as they get ready for their next big break.

After talking to fellow owners of dry cleaners about how they could give something back to their communities, he decided to offer speedy cleaning and pressing of clothes for free to any unemployed customer heading to a job interview.

At Lux Cleaning and Alterations [snip] in San Jose, owner Ali Shirkhodaei says the pro bono work is about fulfilling his long-held ambition to infuse his career with acts of kindness.

“I think it will definitely give them some hope that the community they live in cares about them,” he told San José Spotlight. “It’s not about just getting, it’s about giving. That’s the part that brings all of us joy.”

***

Spotlight described him as possessing a typical immigrant work ethic: finishing in four days what other tailors will do in four weeks, and cleaning complicated items like Indian sarees and wedding dresses. He does it all with a smile, hoping his customers pay forward the kindness elsewhere.

DJ Doof - Fun Cover Versions

Earlier this month, for a Cinco de Mayo gathering, I found a mariachi playlist on my streaming service. I was expecting music that I wasn't familiar with being played by mariachi bands. To my surprise, the playlist included a bunch of covers of classic rock and pop songs. Here are a few.

Don't Stop Me Now (Queen song)

Don't You Want Me (Human League song)

Crazy Train (Ozzy Osbourne song)

Lots more available out there!

On the subject of streaming music - great for convenience and variety, but still inferior for several reasons:

doof-cds-matter.jpg

I still have a very large CD collection. DVDs also. I have no plans to get rid of them. But I do very much enjoy the streaming service that I subscribe to.

How about you, Hordelings? Is your listening method a blend of streaming/online and physical media - or exclusively one or the other?

(This may be an interesting topic to include in a future music thread if I get the chance to do another one)

39 Hey everyone, I’m Sammy, a good friend of Stateless. I’m actually at his house right now. He wanted to say that he feels pretty horrible about some of the comments he made today here. I understand that one of his posts was deleted.

As I’m sure some y’all know, he’s going thru some really terrible and rough time. I’ve known his mom for the last 4 years. We’ve been neighbours for that period of time as well and know them very well. His mom was a wonderful woman. My girls loved her.

There is some terrible news that awaits Stateless tomorrow. Lawyer decided to just say that without actually saying what that bad news was. So, today has been a massive stewing with all that on his mind, trying to figure out what’s going to happen and what the horrible thing is going to be.

For those of you praying for him, thanks for doing that. Please keep on praying as he definitely needs it. I’m here with him as I’m typing this out. He’s in pretty bad shape, but I will assist in bringing him up and back on his feet.

Thanks for all of you who has been praying and saying the nice things you said to Stateless. He is very grateful for your kind words. He finds this place a great support group 4 him

----

The only streaming I do is from somafm.com, but that's more like radio so I don't think that really counts.

These days I tend to buy from bandcamp.com. Artists I really like, I get the physical CD (which gets put aside, usually still in the wrapper) and download the digital tracks. Artists I'm not sure about or compilations I usually just buy and download the digital album.

No doubt that the album art is much better on the old vinyl record albums. But CDs are a lot more durable. And there's less distortion.
It's also easy to rip your CDs onto a hard drive. And with the sound systems in the newer cars you can have a huge music library available with a single thumb drive.

And I am very happy.

We all heard the awful news about Scott Adams today. My paternal grandfather suffered through the same thing. His doctor found the prostate cancer and told him he would die of something else long before the prostate cancer got him. I was twelve hundred miles away when this happened, but family members kept me posted. To be honest, my understanding is that bone cancer is possibly the most painful way to leave this Earth. I am very sad.

84 Full-size album art?

I mean, yes, it’s nice to have album art. But most album art, even for albums coming out after CDs became popular, seem to be designed for the much larger vinyl format.

Also, they’re not uncompressed. CDs are compressed in the same sense that audio files are compressed. Just less of it. Much less, generally, to the point that for most unprofessional ears (including my own) they’re indistinguishable from analog. But they’re not analog, they’re digital, and they are compressed.

Vinyl is compressed, too, dynamic range is compressed. Soft passages are made louder, to overcome the surface noise inherent in the media, and very loud passages are muted, so the needle doesn't cross into the adjacent groove,

Hard to argue that. Quality is far superior to all internet based formats. Great for a time when listening to music was it's own activity. I miss those days.

Streaming offers convenience and variety. It also allows the listener to hear stuff they may not have discovered on their own.

I having both options. When I discover something new that I like through streaming (Mammoth WVH, for example -- Wolfgang Van Halen's band), I will often buy their CDs. Not always - but a lot!

107 Vinyl is compressed, too, dynamic range is compressed.

Yes, but that’s a completely different kind of compression than the flier in the post means. It’s nothing to do with file size reduction.

Weirdly, given your reasons for dynamic compression, modern releases on CD and streaming tend to go even heavier on dynamic compression.

Apparently, cats can take up to 2 years to get back (which is a long time). So, I’m still hopeful for Trumpy to get back. That cat is like a little lion. Let’s hope he will make it back for Stateless’ sake as well as ours. Stateless loved that cat and his disappearance has taken a toll on him as well among all the other things.

Compressed FLAC I think. And EAC is the way to go. I’d suggest getting a good modern external cd reader. Mine is an LG and does dvds blue ray and burning. Not too much $$$, I think a hundred. But with a good reader EAC will do checksums against community sourced raw data and correct your read for errors. Very high quality results.

Feel free to ignore or pass along the following coping mechanism that served me well in times of uncertainty. Imagine the worst case scenario, when every decision and circumstance goes against you. Consider what that would look like, more importantly, what that would feel like. Spend a few minutes in that space until you start to imagine the day after when...life simply goes on.

This exercise has served me well over the years. The worst case scenario rarely plays out by the way, which makes any deviation in your favor feel like a win. Best wishes to you both..

I say stealth, because it's buried at the end of the proposition & gets no "airplay". It's all about *fixing the water systems* ya know. Drinking water, sewer, storm drains, yadda yadda yadda. And they need public approval to move funds/take loan/whatever supposedly under better terms than would be available without voter approval. Uh huh.

But, oh, they won't need to increase property taxes, but oh btw, a levy would be approved if the prop. passes.

Funny that.

Yes. I don’t understand why, but there is a significant enough cassette culture to justify record stores having a cassette section along with records and CDs.

Eight-tracks, on the other hand, while they certainly have a subculture, it either isn’t big enough to matter or eight-tracks just haven’t survived in enough quantity for most stores I visit to give them a section.

244 Hissy, not sissy, jeez.

We have thousands of LPs, and I still have all my 45s, probably a couple hundred. I have my original Partridge Family albums, Bobby Sherman, etc....lots of my parents country and 50s albums. Before the vinyl revival started, we used to get albums for a quarter, 50 cents at thrift stores and library sales. It's fin to pick up random stuff like ukele bands, or gypsy quartets, just for fun. Thor has fancy album cleaning machines and whatnot. But it's much harder to find bargains on good records these days.

And I got over my initial dislike of CDs, so we have walls full of those, too. Never have streamed, our internet couldn't handle it at first, so we never got started doing it. I'd probably enjoy the suggestions they give based on your listening history.

Thor has a reel to reel, but he used it for his own compositions. I don't think he ever put his albums on reels.

254 9. Being kind is better than being right.

There is an addendum to this particular one. This is ONLY applicable to relationships of the domestic kind. IT IS NOT applicable to partisan politics.

"Being kind is better than being right" is a GOP philosophy that the Lincoln Projection stands behind and prophesizes. Additionally, being kind to your wife does not include securing her a sex partner from Tinder.

264 Interesting article on marriage advice. My wife and I have been married for 47 years and counting. It ushered five successful adults into this world, with four grandchildren and counting, and it's the best thing that's ever happened to me, this side of having been born. As to the formula for success: Apart from having the luck to find the right mate, I tell people we say "please" and "thank you" for everything, even for acts as trivial as passing the salt. Doing this tells the other that their acts are appreciated, that they're not taken for granted, which is always good; and it creates an atmosphere of courtesy in the home, which helps the marriage survive the crises that come into every shared life. It's simple, but we've found that it works.

266 STARLINK MINI: THE FIRST STEP TOWARD OWNING YOUR INTERNET

This isn’t just a portable dish — it's infrastructure you can carry.

No landlord sign-offs, no waiting for fiber rollouts, no telecom monopoly middlemen.

Just high-speed internet in your backpack — wherever you are, whenever you need it.

Starlink Mini marks a quiet revolution: internet access moves from a utility you lease to a tool you own.

It’s not just for off-grid cabins or digital nomads.

In disaster zones, censored regimes, or disconnected classrooms, it’s autonomy in a box.

You’re not just online.

You are the node.

Don't know if it's happened to you yet but he's helping do drive down the price of standard internet. Past three years every at contract time (one year only, no second year full price crap) it's cheaper and faster than last year. Tech is encroaching on monopoly.

267 For anyone who likes Pink Floyd and vinyl, and can get over putting money in Roger Waters' pocket, the 50th Anniversary release of Dark Side of the Moon is outstanding. Sound quality is unbelievably good.

I wouldn't have bought it myself, but I got it for Christmas and couldn't believe how good it was.
