I don't need Proton if they don't find a solution to this.

Maybe musk can come up with a plan to move Proton to space.

4 Let me tell ya, you know you're starting off the day wrong when you think it's Monday morning. I won't have water in my apartment part of Monday for repairs. I also don't have water in my kitchen since Friday morning; some leak in the line; FDNY were at my door at 7:00 a.m. Friday. So here I'm beginning to panic to make sure the ice cube trays are all filled, the water jug topped off, water in a pot or a pan, whatever.

But it's Sunday morning. And I double-checked three times.

9 This condition of having an "everywhere time-like Killing field" says that a spacetime has time translation symmetry. Ashtekar and Magnon also assume that spacetime is globally hyperbolic and that the wave equation for a massive spin-zero particle has a smooth solution given smooth initial data. All this lets us define a concept of energy for solutions of this equation. It also lets us split solutions into positive-frequency solutions, which correspond to particles, and negative-frequency ones, which correspond to antiparticles. We can thus set up quantum field theory in way we're used to on Minkowski spacetime, where there's a well-defined vacuum which does not decay into particle-antiparticle pairs.

23 Ear buds are the bane of my life. My general experience is they don't stay stuck in my ears so they sound tinny. Of course one of them and only one of them falls out of my ear when I'm out and about so I can never find it. I probably have the largest collection of half pairs of earbuds on the planet.

Until yesterday.

I got a pair with one of those things that stick into the groove of your ear. I spent all day running errands and made it home with both earbuds. This is a miracle. This also means I can now stand around looking sultry and taking pictures of myself at odd angles while listening to rock and roll through both ear buds.

The type of miracle ear buds is at the link.

24 A happy Sunday evening to those toiling, and a happy morning to those like me up early!

In a sudden reversal of her usual attitude, little gray Dagny La Siberienne actually slept in bed with me last night. No idea why. I woke at about 2:30 to feel a warm lump behind my knees, twisted to check, and found a stubby plumy tail -- Dagny. I managed to turn over and drift with odd flashes of dreams for another ninety minutes, and she stayed until I got up. Amazin'.

Stirling? He hoicked up a hairball a while ago on the kitchen counter (better there than on carpet), and is now hunting something hiding behind my coffee jars near the toaster.

Fen, I've never thought about that. I'm told I handle children in (adult) stories well; my anthology sale in 2019, "Dead in First Grade," was told from the viewpoint of a six-year-old girl, using my memories of my own first days of school. But I wouldn't know how to step down, so to speak, for children without talking down to them. Or to plot such a story.

Miss Linda is always bringing home children's library books about animal adventures. Maybe I need to study them more seriously?

In '06, for fun and to console Linda after the passing of her black cat Marie, I wrote a series of sketches where the cats we knew at that time, Marie, Angelique, and Oreo, could talk to each other and comment on what their humans ("the Servants") were doing. Each cat character had a definite personality, not always like their real-life counterparts, and the dialog was funny (to me, anyway).

It was intended for "all ages." I just don't know what kids' age group that sort of thing could be aimed at.

That sounds not unlike my three siblings and I hunkered down in our bedroom upstairs while my smoker parents and their smoker friends celebrated the holidays downstairs. And smoked. A lot.

For one of us to have said, "I need to go to the bathroom" was equivalent to a final farewell because that child would have to brave the thick miasma of cigarette smoke that filled the rest of the house. We'd hug and cry and wish the traveler godspeed.

62 In all seriousness, when it comes to ear buds, I tend to fixate on situational awareness.
Specially when out in public, sidewalks, walking in the morning, etc.

About six months ago, I added these from TOZO to my collection, and frankly love them.

They look ungainly, but remain in my ears no matter what I am doing. And are acoustically transparent.

And the sound is darn good. Not as good as something wedged fully into the ear canal, but surprisingly good for how they set on, but not in the ear opening.

Earbuds, schmeerbuds.

Relaxing in the hammock on our porch last night, I thoroughly enjoyed how quiet it was. Really quiet, with only occasional calls from birds in the salt marsh grasses from time to time.

Difference is cigarette taxes are 'for the children', both in funding and in stopping kids from smoking. But once tax revenue drops due to the price of a pack, the government complains, raises the cigarette tax again losing more revenue generating more complaints. It's an endless cycle of government 'help' and should be a model when looking at other government programs.

You have some wonderful stories of basically getting away with stuff at the studios. I'd learned one very simple trick: say yes. Simply say yes. Like
Joseph E. Levine, on "The Producers," said, "The curly-haired guy —he's funny looking. Fire him." He wanted me to fire Gene Wilder. And I said, "Yes, he's gone. I'm firing him." I never did. But he forgot. After the screening of "Blazing Saddles," the head of Warner Bros. threw me into the manager's office, gave me a legal pad and a pencil, and gave me maybe twenty notes. He would have changed "Blazing Saddles" from a daring, funny, crazy picture to a stultified, dull, dusty old Western. He said, "No farting." I said, "It's out."

Looking at the video - the vessel was undocking from the other side of the river. It was in reverse and "backed into" the bridge. It was going very fast ... in reverse... throwing a wake... If I had to guess, based on my decades of experience skippering boats - the transmission was stuck in reverse and they couldn't shut things down in time to avert disaster.

Why they didn't drop the anchor and shut down the engine is beyond me. Typically during docking and undocking maneuvers, a crew will be tasked on anchor duty - standing ready to drop in case of emergency.

242 In mathematics, Killing fields have nothing to do with Cambodia.

In mathematics, a Killing vector field, named after Wilhelm Killing, is a vector field on a pseudo-Riemannian manifold that preserves the metric tensor. Killing vector fields are the infinitesimal generators of isometries; that is, flows generated by Killing vector fields are continuous isometries of the manifold. More simply, the flow generates a symmetry, in the sense that moving each point of an object the same distance in the direction of the Killing vector will not distort distances on the object

I am sure this will clarify the matter for our mathematically declined friends.

Yeah, tell me how that works when Joe Wurzelbacher the Plumber, Trump's Taxes and millions of other examples of "Law Enforcement Only" using their "back door key" to give up lists of registered gun users, data behind sealed court documents and other intel to hostile entities.

There are plenty of Snowdens and Assanges out there who would give or sell the keys to the kingdom with the right motivation.

268 241 More work email beefs:

1. Vast overuse of exclamation points.
2. Ending with an ellipsis. If you've got something else to say, say it.
Posted by: Biff Pocoroba

+++
3. Not using the Subject: line to state the email's actual subject. Instead the sender just puts something generic like "Question" or "Need some help."
This is frustrating because when there's a pile of unread emails and the display is set to only show the Subject line, it's harder to triage. Is the "Question" something serious and urgent or something esoteric? State a short version of the question in the Subject: line.

To wit: Subject: Airspeed of unladen swallow?
