The Streisand Effect: Texas RINO Dade Phelan is Promoting the Memes He Is Trying to Criminalize

The fissures in Texas Republican politics are somewhat reflective of the national battle for the soul of the Republican Party, as the anti-MAGA establishment has allied with Democrats to try to defeat the Republicans’ conservative base by any means necessary.

In 2023, “Republican” Speaker of the Texas House of Representatives, Dade Phelan, sought to impeach Texas’ Attorney General, Ken Paxton, who has aggressively used his office to battle the left’s agenda. While Paxton was technically impeached for “misusing the powers of his office,” it was an obvious political exercise to take out an elected conservative warrior.

The good news is that the impeachment failed, as enough senate Republicans in the state legislature heard from angry constituents who helped the Senators understand that if they removed Paxton from office via impeachment, they would also be terminating their own political careers. Best of all, Paxton has emerged stronger than ever from all this, and he is poised to defeat 24-year incumbent John Cornyn in the 2026 Texas Republican primary for the US Senate.

Meanwhile, Dade Phelan became an object of scorn and mockery. There is a famous video of him incoherently drunk as he was speaking to the House around the time of the impeachment trial. Having been widely mocked, Phelan is now trying to make it criminally illegal for Texans to mock him. Although he is no longer Speaker of the House, he still serves as a Republican representative in the legislature in an alliance with Democrats and a lot of other fake-Republicans. So, he had his buddies in the legislature pass a bill for the purpose of criminalizing memes that mock Dade Phelan. Seriously.

Texas House Approves Former Speaker Dade Phelan’s Meme Regulation Bill: Punishment under the legislation could result in up to a year in jail [Texas Scorecard – April 30, 2025]

The Texas House has approved legislation by former Speaker Dade Phelan that would criminalize the distribution of altered political media, such as memes, videos, or audio recordings, unless they contain a government-mandated disclaimer. Despite tweaks in a recently adopted committee substitute, the bill continues to face intense criticism from First Amendment advocates who warn it would chill political speech and satire.

It is not yet law, as it still must be passed by the state Senate and signed by Governor Abbott.

Meanwhile, Rep. Phelan is going on social media highlighting examples of the memes he is trying to criminalize. I believe this is called the Streisand Effect, in which you bring attention to that which you are trying to suppress.

Phelan Memes.JPG

Please Mr. Phelan, continue to let us know of any and all memes you encounter that disrespect you.

Far be it from me, however, to post any of those memes that Rep. Phelan wants to criminalize. But I will post a video of him struggling to make a coherent sentence at the dais of the state House of Representatives.

It’s also worth remembering that the same “respectable” establishment Republicans in Texas who state that Donald Trump has neither the character nor temperament to serve in public office remain steadfast in their support for Dade Phelan.

4 Similar attempts have already been ruled on by the SC that parody memes that are not presented as real are constitutionally allowed under the first amendment. Abbott should veto and if not someone needs to file a lawsuit. It's a slam dunk.

Well, no, we do get scraps in the form of tax cuts.

Similarly, the Dems never legislatively pass the big items the pink-haired they/thems desire, they always tell their base that they tried but the mean Republicans blocked it.

The bases of both parties see behind the curtain that the wizard was Nancy Pelosi's pendulous boobs all along, and that's going to be a problem going forward for both parties. Similarly, the younger generation in both parties is mostly from the base, not the carefully prepped Ivy League class, so they have no patience for failure theater.

There was no strategy involved in either case, either. Elden Ring wasn't marketed because it was expected to be a niche title. The Oblivion remaster wasn't marketed because it was assumed the GTA 6 freight train would nuke it. You'll see a lot of surprise and obviously rushed launches this year from companies that assumed GTA 6 was coming for their lunch money.

91 I wouldn't mind some tax cuts or at least adjustments of the rate indexes. $25 out of every $100 from my salary is going to state and federal taxes. That aint horrible but I'm at or getting close to, or maybe am already at the point where if/when I earn a bit more the tax hit on that extra $/week goes even higher.
I'm exempt? salary so I don't directly have the disincentive to work OT or if I was self-employed to grow my business, but the government penalizes high earners.

And please with "CEOs get more from tax cuts". The really rich people get the capitol gains rates. High tax rates penalize high EARNERS like doctors, or the skilled welder willing to work 80 hr weeks on an offshore oil rig.

Texas has open primaries and your party “registration” only happens when you vote in a primary, and you can change it at the next primary just by saying you want to.

So, that being said, Phelan made a huge push in his runoff election to appeal to all the Dems in his district who could still vote to vote for him and keep the Evil MAGA Conservative out. He barely won with that.

112 It is worth remembering that the TX HR is controlled by a conservative hating cabal that led to types like Dade Phelan.

To wit:

Tom Craddick was the Speaker, but the RINO cabal was out to take him down. So, Joe Straus teamed up with Dems to launch a coup against him and place Straus in the Speaker's chair. He was the first one. (I don't think Bonnen got in that way but I forgot about him, one term and done.) Then Phelan did that, and dude WOULD NOT SHUT UP about how eager he was to work with the Dems. Who do you have now? Lubbock's very own Dustin Burrows, who started out a strong conservative, but sold out as soon as he saw The Speaker's Gavel. Then it became "What do I have to do to hold the Gavel? No price is too great."

Up and Out-of-the-Way

Seen it used even down in middle management level.

Got a lifer happy with lower management slot that will not just retire or 'go away'? Create a do-nothing promotion (or opening) and move them up. Move your 'nephew" into his old slot.
Guy you promoted will soon 'go away'. Move 'nephew' on up again. Two promotions in five/six years that few could make in a career.

Very effective in cratering any organization when sr management goal was to give 'nephew' a way up.

It is an attempt at a fork to damn him for inaction or damn him for "constitutional crises"

154 I think Texas has been about 20 years ahead of the country, politically and shows the path we’re headed down. The Texas Dem Party effectively died at least 20 years ago. They can field self financing one-off candidates like Beto, and control Ghetto districts like Jasmine Crocketts, but that’s it.
The real Fight is between GOP-MAGA led in Texas by Paxton, or GOP-e led by Phelan and his crowd.

155 There was a Rule put in place at the last Republican Convention which aimed to stop the RINO minority from teaming up with the traitor rats and gaining the Speakership. Essentially, the rule says that the Republican Caucus will vote on who the Speaker should be, and anyone who votes for a Speaker other than the Caucus choice can be thrown from the Party, cannot appear on a ballot as a Republican, and will get no funds from the Party. There's 36 traitors that split off to vote Burrows in, with the help of all traitor rats.

Abraham George, the Republican Party Chair, has a choice to make: Expel the RINO traitors, or be a doormat for the Bushie RINOs.

163 Same thing for lakeside property.

Lake property in Texas is weird. Most lakes are Corp of Army Engineers lakes which means you can't build on it, only near it. Fine, so you don't have an apartment complex at the back of your house, but a highly fluctuating level of water with jet skis.

Homes you can build on have already been built on - like 50 years ago so those home are ancient second-homes, not primary - weekend getaways and are shoulder-to-shoulder with other homes affording zero privacy.

You have to have the money to buy the property, knock down the crap that is on it and get the permits to construct another - then get absolutely hammered in taxes and HOA dues.

Neither of which are appropriate measures. Smoot Hawley's actual effects were widely distorted in economic literature when it was positively demonstrated by Friedman and others that the Federal Reserve and its bungling during the Hoover administration was to blame.

Corn Laws were designed as much for food security as they were for import/export but the starvation in Ireland due to potato blight was blamed on them as well as Industrialists wanted cheap food for cheap laborers. Ricardo himself was more an investor than what we would call today an economist.

Jeremy Prime @DDayCobra

Both of these guys spent years talking about how corrupt the system was. They both became incredibly successful and rich by doing that.

Now they are talking down to people because we doubt what they're saying.

Owen Shroyer @OwenShroyer1776

Kash Patel and Dan Bongino tell America that Jeffery Epstein committed suicide.

218 Fingers crossed we don't get burned again by over promising...

This is where you need to set your expectation really low.

Bongino was a fairly good podcaster and replacement for the 12p-3p ET time slot. He would use a thousand words to say what could be done in ten, but what he, and pretty much any other successful mike jock can do is hype the next segment.

The tease to keep listeners tuned in is far more important than actually delivering the news. A good teaser will promise a lot, and then take a thousand words, an hour or two later to say basically nothing.

This is who you heard during the interview. Set expectations according to what you know about the character of the person saying it.

The Corn Laws still failed and Britain abandoned them. Smoot-Hawley, unfortunately for a lot of people, no matter how hard they try to argue, is a prime example of "The enemy gets a vote." Everyone thinks other countries will just shrug and say "Oh, OK." Smoot-Hawley, because of retaliation by other countries, led to the strangulation of trade, which killed a revenue stream at the worst possible time.

Personally, I'd drop tariffs on everyone, except the PRC, because the PRC is the enemy. (h/t, Mark Levin)

Tolling on criminal charges like conspiracy, in some cases, can be extended based on when the information is found rather than when the actual crime occurred if the primary reason was that the information was concealed illegally. Tolling regarding statutes of limitations is a very complex area of the law depending on what is actually being charged.

Re Ricardo, read about the Ricardian Vice. And fwiw, the Wealth of Nations--exceptions for national security reasons like food are why island nations often rightfully have pro domestic production biases. We in the US did not like Corn Laws because it excluded us exporting surplus agri products to the UK. This. There was massive credit expansion heading into the ‘29 crash, and then credit contraction which killed local banks (but, oddly, left the massive banks that basically owned the Federal Reserve alive.)

Every recession or panic since 1913 has killed local banks and given more power to the Federal Reserve and J.P. Morgan.

The analysis I saw was that tariffs are only going to go so far, and that mostly to get all the US trading partners to enter into agreements on trade. There will probably be mostly a 10% tariff on everything and ongoing negotiations on protectionism, which is not a terrible thing, just not convenient for the multinationals.
This won't touch the problem of on-shoring manufacturing long term, that is a problem because of the strength of the US Dollar making US Products expensive in regards to foreign manufacture. That problem will probably be solved by capital controls like taxing foreign investment which will make Treasuries and dollar based bonds less attractive, and make the US Dollar weaker, and US Manufacturing cheaper to export. But it will be slow, but easier to tax than some multi-level tariff plan and import protectionism.

271 You misunderstand. I'm saying you're a fucking idiot.

Posted by: JackStraw at May 18, 2025 02:02 PM (viF8m)

I didn't misunderstand you, Jack. I'm merely saying Trump can put anything in your mouth, and you'll swallow it and say it's yummy.

People like you get offended when I suggest not everything Trump does is perfect. And you call me an idiot.

You can believe anything you want. I live in the real world.

273 Does Singapore have a drug problem?

Singapore doesn't have a George Soros problem and such they don't have "Prosecutors" who spend their entire budgets and time going after political opponents rather than miscreants who need to be removed from society.

274 Why do I have this feeling, in September, Thomas Massie is going to be railing against the continuing resolution bill, and everyone is going to be calling him a traitor.

275 ...I have no idea if there is anything chargeable, statute of limitations has probably run on a lot stuff, but if you watch the interview Kash and Bongino gave today it doesn't seem like are bluffing to me. Remember, they tried to destroy Kash as well and if he's anything like me he likes his revenge served cold.

I sure as hell hope there's no statute of limitations on trying to overthrow the duly elected President of the country. FFS.

Nada.

Low T effort CBD. (j/k)

He's only been in France a few weeks, it takes time for the aristocracy to set in.

Has CBD acquired a piss boy yet?

I'm expecting Patel/Bongino/Bondi Trifecta of Inaction to come out towards the end of 47's term and say "Well, we tried, but we couldn't progress because of the Statute of Limitations..."

280 Does Singapore have a drug problem?

Having been there a few months ago, I can honestly say I wouldn't jaywalk in Singapore, let along run drugs.

The passport controls are insane biometrics with fingerprinting and facial recognition. They know who you are, where you are going, how long you will be there, why you are there, and who you are associating with.

One of our guides had canning pictures to show us. Because that makes total sense on a food tour. (Talk about taking away your appetite.)

281 261 >> FWIW, the proximate cause of the Great Depression had nothing to do with Smoot Hawley. Economists Milton Friedman and Anna J. Schwartz, in the classic study A Monetary History of the United States, 1867–1960 argued Fed inaction in addressing bank panics and actually contracted the money supply and raised interest rates to boot.

Morgan.

283 Sorry, y'all can argue with me until you are blue in the face that the destruction of world trade with the passage of Smoot-Hawley had absolutely nothing to do with the Depression. But it is the truth.

Granted, the '29 crash kicked things off. BUT, if government left well enough alone, the country would have endured a deep recession. The government can't, though, so to encourage domestic production/consumption, Smoot-Hawley was passed. Then a law kicked in that countless Morons do not understand and do NOT WANT to understand: The Enemy Gets A Vote. The rest of the world doesn't just take something like that, shrug shoulders and says "Oh, OK." They respond with tariffs of their own. Bye bye trade - and another source of revenue for many at a time when it was badly needed - and hello, Great Depression. The tariff was passed in 1930. 1931 was the worst year of the Depression.

284 This is at least the same level of retardation as the guy who suddenly wants a federal ban on pron. First Amendment issues aside, we have way WAY more immediate and existential matters to address.

285 in case the maf wasn't discussed...there are 150 house members so it takes 76 votes to pass anything in the house. There are 88 'republicans' and 62 hard leaning leftist dems.
Dems are 62 lockstep votes. It takes peeling off 14 repubs to kill a bill. There are easily 30-35 soft repubs that will rotate in to make the 14 votes.
There are no established corporate conservative newspaper or television media outlets in Texas I know of. They are CNN liberal. Big city or small they will not publish conservative content. You have to subscribe to the substack type journalists to know what is going during the bi-annual sessions.
