18 This gets really funny at the end:

The symbol #, called hash in British English, has different names, some of them potentially confusing. In the US, it is referred to as either the number sign (when used in contexts such as ‘question #2’ or the pound sign (when used as a symbol for pounds of weight: ‘2# of sugar’. 29 Artificial Intelligence, Scientific Discovery, and Product Innovation

Aidan Toner-Rodgers
This paper studies the impact of artificial intelligence on innovation, exploiting the randomized introduction of a new materials discovery technology to 1,018 scientists in the R&D lab of a large U.S. firm. AI-assisted researchers discover 44% more materials, resulting in a 39% increase in patent filings and a 17% rise in downstream product innovation. These compounds possess more novel chemical structures and lead to more radical inventions. However, the technology has strikingly disparate effects across the productivity distribution: while the bottom third of scientists see little benefit, the output of top researchers nearly doubles. Investigating the mechanisms behind these results, I show that AI automates 57% of "idea-generation" tasks, reallocating researchers to the new task of evaluating model-produced candidate materials. Top scientists leverage their domain knowledge to prioritize promising AI suggestions, while others waste significant resources testing false positives.

Posted by: m at May 17, 2025 05:14 AM (CQE5S)

30 Together, these findings demonstrate the potential of AI-augmented research and highlight the complementarity between algorithms and expertise in the innovative process. Survey evidence reveals that these gains come at a cost, however, as 82% of scientists report reduced satisfaction with their work due to decreased creativity and skill underutilization.

Thanks for the reminder of that song Fen. I'm not particulary fond of that version, I prefer a more rousing rendition by Bapstists singing their faith and their hearts out, due to my upbringing.

Might be a good song for Dad's celebration of life or his internment service, which may happen in the upcoming months.

He wants to be cremated, doesn't much care as to the ceremony, just wants his ashes to be near Mom. Scattered on the ground or interned there.

Any suggestions? I'm thinking why "internment" when scattering would do just as well.

Which always makes me think of my cousins scattering Aunt Bonnie and Uncle Dave's ashes near the local river. Protip- always make sure there is no wind coming up, as I'm sure we in the crowd inhaled a bit of both of them!

You might need a new WiFi card in it.
The good thing is they are relatively cheap components.

Look up your laptops specs, and see if the WiFi module is replaceable.

In most laptops they are, along with the SSD(s).

It’s just a matter of taking out all the screws on the back, prying it open and then your inside.

A WiFi card on a laptop is usually unscrewing one screw, unhooking a few wires and then the reverse to install the new one,

I recommend an Intel “Killer” brand WiFi card.
Especially if your system has an AMD processor and Lenovo used a MediaTek card, which is often the case.

You can find them on Amazon pretty cheap.

My mom did the Bunko thing every month with a group of friends, rotating house every month.

That lasted up until COVID, and they basically all stopped doing it. A few have passed on, others were sick or moved.

But she enjoyed it.

Must be a female thing, it included a bunch of wine & Brie,

Never heard of a man playing with them.

86 This 73 year old woman in California has had a student loan for 40 years.

"She was a single mother when she got a bachelor's degree in developmental psychology and when she discovered she couldn't earn enough to pay off her loans, she went back to school and got a master's degree. Her salary never caught up."

"Around 2008, when she consolidated her loans, she was paying $1,000 a month, but years of missed payments and piled-on interest meant she was barely putting a dent in a bill that had ballooned to $250,000. "

Now they are going to garnish her Social Security.

I would have to look the date up, but it was back in January.

I just paid a small amount to be able to custom graph data for as far as three years back, in order to track the home HVAC performance. Put another sensor on the second floor, and can pretty much track more data than one might ever want, all in 5 minute increments for three years. And using the FLIR brand thermal camera, we have been tracking some very minor weaknesses in insulation as well.

It's been interesting

They pretty much brought this on everybody when they first made Student Loans protected from personal bankruptcy decades ago.

Then Obama had the Feds take over the Student Loans industry.

Then the colleges & universities decided every tuition and fee increase was going to be covered no matter what so they just kept increasing them until they’re now just the slightly less expensive little brother of the healthcare industry, and here we are.

If a person is bankrupt, they’re bankrupt, why torture them well into their retirement over the cost of something that the government caused by its own actions.

They wanted everybody to go to college to build this new economy when all the factory jobs left.

Now it turns out the juice was far more expensive than the squeeze.

Good morning, Fen,

I haven't been to a gym in a few years, but my guess is three or four times a week. If you're lifting, your muscles need time to recover and consolidate their gains. He could work upper body and arms twice a week, legs twice a week. If you mean he's doing aerobic exercise like stationary bike or treadmill running, then about the same frequency. I do the latter, out on the road or at a track, three to four sessions in a week, plus some calisthenics and pre-workout stretching. In between, I rest!

The classic books on aerobic conditioning are the original Aerobics and its successors by Ken Cooper. He's the guy who "started America running" about fifty years ago -- and the first book is one of the great motivational books ever written. (In Brazil they still call aerobic workouts "coopering.")

There clearly needs to be a common sense student debt control law!

let's make it illegal to force people to enter into involuntary contractual obligations, and return University attendance back into a choice to be made, not a requirement.

174 More adventures in OPM shenanigans. It has been a day less than a month since my wife died.

SSI is slightly different, they will eventually claw back the money, but you have to leave the deceased's account open and funded enough to cover the anticipated grab plus whatever reoccurring bank fees that will continue to mount.

Maybe I should send in the deceased's voter registration card and claim several privileges to Party Members and those who are not straight white, Christian males. They might just continue to send money to the account as long as some fraction gets siphoned off to ActBlue.

Don't know the percentage, though pigs get fat, hogs get slaughtered.

I think the money, or lack thereof, is the main problem.

Cord-cutting is hitting the steady monthly income coming in.

While the Woke crusade has lost money at the same time they were wasting it by spending hundreds of billions to fill their new streaming services with expensive woke crap.

So they all raise prices on streaming, add cheaper Ad-tiers because people are cancelling over the prices.

And they are still losing money, except maybe Netflix, but they are lean & mean compared to their competitors.

They really have no option left but to consolidate and try to salvage the entire house of cards they built.
