The Ace of Spades Pet Thread

IMG_0917 (1).JPG

[Rumor has it they may merge with Dewey, Cheatem & Howe, S.C.]

Good afternoon and welcome to the almost world famous Ace of Spades Pet Thread. I'm filling in once again for the lovely and talented KT. Enjoy the world of animals and pets and for heaven's sake, leave the politics and current events out at the curb.

*****

Longtime Moron and all around good guy is Hrothgar. He has been submitting items for a number of years. The following submission made me truly laugh out loud. Thank you Hrothgar.

Life without a dog is boring.

Do you like music? Does your pet like music? Chords for companionship: Guitar music for pets.

Not my cup of tea, and the Setters here prefer something a little more upbeat. But each and everyone/everything has their own taste.

One contribution this week of a cute Pet Moron. The following comes from Aetius451AD.

reefdog.jpg

This is Aetius451AD.

Picture of Reef the night I brought him home:

I got him at 12 weeks (per the shelter.) They billed him as a Blue Heeler puppy. And while there is some Heeler in there maybe, that is not top billing in the genetic stew. But I took him anyway. I liked the look of his eyes.

What a cute little angel you have there Aetius. I bet his needle sharp teeth haven't chewed on anything off limits. (Wink & nod) Thanks for sharing!

Well that's a wrap on the AoS Pet Thread. Please continue to keep KT in your thoughts and prayers. Hopefully she will be back with you next week. Same AoS channel, same Pet Thread time.
Have a great week!

10 A doggeh question I posted thus morning, wanna see what you guys think.

Short version: can impending thunderstorms cause doggeh nausea plus excited play?

Details: Yesterday morning doggeh had evidence of overnight throw up, only ate the topper off his breakfast, threw that up, did not want to eat
BUT wanted to play AND kept trying to hump (he knows he's not allowed to do)

I ignored him until he went to sleep. In the meantime a big thunderstorm rolled through which also gave me a migraine.

When doggeh woke he seemed better, though I was still careful to keep him calm and just feed small meals.

Anyway, it obviously could be caused by anything but I was wondering if one possibility was a sort of GI migraine caused by the weather?

Reef is odd though. Last night, he wanted to go out during the thunderstorms and loved it.

One night about a month ago though, he all of a sudden runs over to my desk and sits between my feet, just shaking, looking up at me through the glass. I asked him what was wrong and he runs to his crate and huddles against the back wall. I managed to coax him out and he just trembled while I petted him in my lap, then he slunk back to the crate. It was odd, but he was ok later in the night.

Monetize that doggie!

I think having a "ghost-sensing" dog would be quite valuable. You could be a regular on all of those stupid TV shows where their expensive electronics "react" to the presence of a spirit.

A cute dog would certainly be more lovable than electronics, and would probably become a star!

39 One night about a month ago though, he all of a sudden runs over to my desk and sits between my feet,

*********

Our red heeler mix as a young puppy would get the "zoomies".. Usually in the early evening around dusk she would just start running flat out through the house or out in the yard at 100 mph. Then she would start to chase her tail and when she got close to catching up to it would jump up in the air, pirouette and grab the tip of her tail in mid-air, landing in a heap. I could get her to calm down by holding her tightly, with her face and snout tucked under my arm and just do the dog whisperer thing. We thought she was possessed, but she outgrew it by about 6-8 months.

I love the videos of a child performing their nightly prayers kneeling beside their bed, where the dog is also in the same position, with its paws clasped on the bed.

My daughters are constantly rescuing or fostering cats, so we frequently have more in the house than we should have.

Techniques we have used:

1.) Let the food bowl be empty for part of the day, particularly on a regular schedule. The non-gorging cat will probably easily figure out the plan, and eat the exact same amount of food as before. The fat cat will hopefully miss a few small meals and lose a little weight.

2.) Feed some wet food. If you give them both some high calorie food and then leave the dry bowl empty for several hours, you will have better control of the total daily caloric intake.

to be continued

Posted by: Hour of the Wolf at May 17, 2025 03:47 PM (VNX3d)

48 3.) Does either cat go outside? If the normal weight cat goes out, then you can pick up the indoor food bowl for a few hours. You can even put out a food bowl outside for that cat, and then have the indoor bowl available for both for even less time during the day. (Always be sure to pick up the outside bowl, so as not to attract possums, raccoons, etc.)

I hope some of those ideas may help a little with the actual situation in your home.

49 Gave Charlie and Bravo their topical flea treatment this morning. We are not frenz right now.

Posted by: Victor Tango Kilo at May 17, 2025 03:48 PM (DIweC)

50 Oh, I just remembered one of our older tricks.

4.) Put a bowl in a high place, like on top of a bookcase. Sometimes you can find a place that the skinny cat can reach, but the fat cat cannot.

You can then have the floor food bowl empty for portions of the day.

I think all of the working breeds that require "high energy" for their jobs are more likely to be dancers and prancers since most of us don't work them enough.

Our neighbor's Husky used to prance while on its yard tether whenever my daughter would start walking over.

One time the route for the girls cross country team took them right past that house. She said the dog's feet broke the speed of light when it realized 12 high school girls were coming into his yard to give scritches!

53 Afternoon, pet folken,

Here's hoping KT will recover nicely. But MisHum is doing good work to keep us going.

Reef is indeed handsome.

The beginning of the "Life without a dog is boring" video, with the big canine leaping into the pool, reminded me of the hilarious videos of Corgis belly-flopping into a pool.

My two thugs, the Killer Kittenz From Outer Space, are well. Dagny actually spent time with us on Wed. night after her vet trip, going so far as to settle on Linda up against the sofa arm. I was saying, "They switched cats on me, that's not Dagny," etc. Then she went back to sleeping under the bed a good part of both Thurs. and Fri. She seems quite healthy, still scratching at some fleas despite the topical they gave her, still eating well, but aloof once again.

They both want water from the tap, despite having a fountain and a bowl of water replaced twice a day.

I may have to worry about this too. Dagny came in at 9.5 lbs, okay for her build and age. A woman who kept lab cats said she found the cats she was caring for were very tuned into bitterness in food and water and would avoid it if possible. Tap water in stainless can be bitter.
She suggested a scant pinch of salt in the water since she said that got her reluctant drinkers to drink water.
So that is what I do.

66 Yay, Petth Read! Thanks MisHum. Get well, KT.

Beware of dog!

Daughter and Son were over here yesterday, with the full contingent of doggos (five, counting our Daisy). Some rambunctiousness ensued, but they settled down. (See the pic last week of four dogs on the couch with Son.)

MiladyJo was in the kitchen, when she took a step back, not realizing Big Dog Jarl was lying on the floor behind her. Unfortunately, she didn't land on Jarl, but fell hard to the floor, on her tailbone and (because you always have to have secondary injuries) hurt her left hand.

When she fell, Daughter and Son were right beside her immediately, each taking a hand to gently help her up. She was also surrounded by five concerned dogs. I couldn't even get through.

It was scary for all of us. She's hurting, mostly when sitting down and getting up, but should heal okay. She's even been out to throw a ball for Daisy a couple of times.

81 My puppy is with the trainer. It seems so weird without him here all day, even though it’s only been. 3 weeks with him. Even the cats seem to be wondering where the stupid dog went. lol.

It’s so funny Anna Puma calls him Soup when I didn’t even get to name him Miso! If I ever get another Shiba, it is going to be Miso, because that is the best Shiba name. But Saijo needed his name so he rises from his humble beginnings to be the very best one, which is what Saijo means.

He is 9 months old, so he isn’t an infant, but still definitely a puppy.

It is too bad about their ailments, but at least right now they have each other and a rescue organization that cares about them,

100 By the way, the reason Shiba Inus are so cute is because they are ridiculously smart and don’t necessarily use it for good. They are feisty and a lot of dog in that fluffy, little package. His trainer just sent a text and said I was right, you definitely have to explain what is in it for him, and when he has it, he has it. Doing the same thing over and over makes him say “we did that already. Good heavens. Move on, please.” 😊

104 My DIL got the cutest “little puppy” who was also played as a Blue Healer mix. Well he does have the markings on his coat but though skinny he’s 100 lbs of muscle and jaws, obviously some pit in him, some Mastiff but loves to cuddle and hides from loud noises, swims and will then walk a mile to shake off on you. The genetic testing claimed 5% Chihuahua…
