Spanning The Globe To Bring You The Constant Variety Of ONTs

Hello Horde! It's Thursday night, welcome to the ONT. Let's start with a meme that escaped from tomorrow's post:

Imagine Finding This In The Attic

Cut-price Magna Carta 'copy' now believed genuine

A manuscript once considered an unofficial copy of Magna Carta is now believed to be a genuine version and ''one of the world's most valuable documents'', according to UK academics.
Harvard Law School paid $27.50 (then about £7) for it in 1946 and for years it has remained tucked away in its library, its true identity unknown.

But two medieval history professors have concluded it is an extraordinarily rare and lost original Magna Carta from 1300, in the reign of King Edward I, that could be worth millions.

''This is a fantastic discovery," said Prof David Carpenter from King's College London, who began analysing it after seeing digitised images of it on the US university's website.

Of course it's at * spit * Harvard. Why couldn't Hillsdale have found a copy?

The Internet Is For Porn

New Bill Would Make All Pornography a Federal Crime in the U.S.

Republican Senator of Utah Mike Lee introduced a bill that would effectively ban porn at the federal level in the United States.
The Interstate Obscenity Definition Act (IODA), introduced by Lee and Illinois Republican Rep. Mary Miller on Thursday, aims to change the Supreme Court’s 1973 “Miller Test” for determining what qualifies as obscene. “Obscenity isn’t protected by the First Amendment, but hazy and unenforceable legal definitions have allowed extreme pornography to saturate American society and reach countless children,” Lee said in a press release. “Our bill updates the legal definition of obscenity for the internet age so this content can be taken down and its peddlers prosecuted.”

The site I use to get around paywalls is down, so I don't have any more than that. Anyone know about this bill? If it passes, but stock in VPN companies.

I Was Told That There Would Be No Math

Mathematician Finds Solution to One of The Oldest Problems in Algebra

As you might expect, understanding how this works isn't easy for the non-algebra geniuses amongst us. Essentially, polynomials are equations that include variables raised to non-negative powers (e.g. x3). When those powers are five or above, that's a higher-degree polynomial.

Mathematicians have figured out how to solve lower-degree versions, but it was thought that properly calculating the higher-degree ones was impossible. Before this new research, we've been relying on approximations.

Wildberger and Rubine took a new approach to the problem, which is based on Catalan numbers. These numbers are used in advanced number counting and arrangements, including counting how many ways polygons can be subdivided into triangles.

By extending the idea of Catalan numbers, the researchers were able to demonstrate that they could be used as a basis for solving polynomial equations of any degree. Part of the clever method involved extending polygon counts to other shapes besides triangles.

It's beyond me, but I bet there are some of y'all who understand it.

Dudes Being Dudes

The True North Comes To Me

Will Danielle Smith steer Alberta away from separation, or will this train keep gathering steam?

Alberta's leader told Postmedia this week that many disaffected Albertans see the threat coming from the east, like other Canadians perceive the threat from the south.

"As scared as these people are of what Donald Trump is going to do to their economy, that's how scared Albertans are of what the Liberals are going to do to the Alberta economy," Smith said.

And just as heightened anti-American feelings have risen broadly — including in Alberta — the separatist movement is aiming to transform the long-brewing anti-Ottawa sentiment into an anti-Canada sentiment.

I don't know if Alberta could make it as a stand alone country, but as the 51st state? It would be nice to be a fan of an American hockey team.

These People Are Insane

Three siblings rescued from house of horrors after ‘COVID syndrome’ parents kept them locked inside since 2021

Three children were dramatically rescued from a COVID lockdown house of horrors after being forced for years to stay inside and wear face masks long after pandemic restrictions ended.

The siblings — 8-year-old twins and a 10-year-old — were finally freed from the home in Oviedo in Spain’s northwest on Monday after being locked inside since 2021, local outlet El Comercio reported.

“As soon as we got them out, all three children began to breathe deeply, as if they had never been outside before,” an investigator said.
Harrowing photos published by Spanish media showed the kids, who are German, emerging from the home wearing face masks.
Immediately after stepping outside, cops said, the children appeared to be amazed and went to touch the grass.

Child abuse, nothing but.

High On Life

Brazilian Psychedelic Plant Emerges as Potential Depression Treatment

Long used in Indigenous Brazilian rituals, the jurema preta plant, which contains a potent psychedelic, is gaining ground as a potential treatment for depression.

At street stalls where medicinal herbs are sold, customers can buy the plant's root which contains dimethyltryptamine (DMT), a hallucinogenic substance that researchers say could be used to alleviate symptoms.

Following instructions he found on the internet, Guaracy Carvajal extracted DMT at home in 2016 from roots he bought on the street.

The 31-year-old software programmer, who had tried various treatment for chronic depression he has suffered since adolescence, said the drug makes it "feel like you've solved something in your life."

I dunno. If it helps folks with depression, that would be a boon for mankind.

28 As the fascist curtain depends on the United States, NPR counts the cultural cost - Canadian tranny musicians are no longer willing to tour in the United States.

The Canadian singer-songwriter began writing Blurring Time in 2021 as a way to process questions about his gender identity. Once he decided to transition, he recorded the tracks in his pre-testosterone voice and again after his voice deepened, harmonizing with the past version of himself.

Blurring Time puts words to a trans experience rarely represented in the media, of the vulnerability of facing the unknown in the quest to live authentically. It resonated with fans, and Larsen began to plan his headlining tour, with dates in New York, Boston, Los Angeles and San Francisco, among other U.S. cities.

...

The policy states that USCIS only recognizes two “biological sexes, male and female,” as assigned at birth. After seeking legal advice, Larsen, who had already changed his gender marker on his passport, came to the conclusion that he had no choice but to cancel his tour.

53 I looked into the quintic polynomial solutions. I have an interest in this because the Lagrange haloes 1-2-3 demand quintic solutions.
Best I could gather - it's in the PDF #9 Eisenstein's Example theorem 11 - listing out those monster power-series, and solving them, is more of a pain in the ass than just feeding the quintic itself and its derivative into the Newton Raphson iterator.
Eisenstein's quintic, by the way, is just -t+x+x^5=0. Lagrange would have coefficients on just about all the x's here.
So: academic interest, impractical for astronomy or pretty much anywhere else you need a quintic or above.

90 Thanks for the ONT.

I'm emotionally exhausted and will read tomorrow.

I was supposed to go to the lawyer's tomorrow, sign a mortgage with my brother and work to pay him off in a year for the house. But he's jacking me around and wants to be paid off now.

I took care of my parents for 14 years. I haven't left the house overnight in 9.5 years. I never wanted anything more than 50% . I figured Steve and I would figure something out. Conservatives are so fucking gullible.

He already got $100,000 settled quickly. There was $500,000 in metals we dug up..... Half his.No problem. There's $90,000 in the bank he gets the minute my living situation is solved.

I wanted a year to get my life together. I've been a caregiver forever. I deserve one one freaking year.

His cunt wife apparently wants me to buy him out immediately. Fuck her. Steve says he can't hold a mortgage for a year or she'll divorce him. I'm not married, but threatening divorce is a line you NEVER cross.

There's $90,000 I am ready to release to him tomorrow.. Another $10,000 immediately paid on the principal, $1500 a month and I'll pay him out next June 30th, even it is with the precious
metals.

That was just sensible since both sibs live in different states and the estate was not big or messy enough to need to hire a lawyer to deal with it, but I still resented having to do that last bit of grunt work.

167 Tapper's revisionist history book has been in the news all week. The publisher is Penguin Random House. Just another attempt to stick it to the U.S.A.

169 Time to get an attack lawyer.

Probate takes longer than a year, generally, and that is because of the various expenses associated with items paid after decease. Dude can wait a year, maybe longer, and not even break a sweat.

If he gets divorced, I fail to see how that is your issue.

Family are a genuine PITA sometimes. Stand your ground.

Better yet, charge him for 14 years of service, and then see what's left.

My brother is a cheap bastard. I think he'll come around.

Honestly, by the time he spends $15,000 to get to mediation, where I'm just going to reject everything , tell the court I just wanted a year to get my life together and he's dragging through the court system, I think I'm pretty good.

I read the Clarity Law that dictates what is necessary for a secession of a province. In short, the law should be called the Imprecision Law. Those bastards in Ottawa purposefully were vague in defining the terms. The House of Commons stated that the people of the province must show a "clear majority" (undefined) and a "clear will of the people" (undefined).

Which means they will define those terms to benefit themselves. Now, Alberta would, obviously and correctly, state a majority is anything above 50%. Which means there will be an impasse as Ottawa will, no doubt, state that "clear majority" means something else entirely. That means Court involvement simultaneous with negotiation of departure requirements. I hate to say it, but I suspect Ottawa will offer up a deal of Alberta continuing to pay into Canada's coffers well after any departure date.

The goal will be two-fold. Continued revenue and stalling to make the whole effort continuously unappetizing.

171 > Probate takes longer than a year, generally

Posted by: tcn in AK at May 15, 2025 10:39 PM (a4NoL)

Yep, you'd be hard-pressed to get it done any faster than a year, even for the simplest estate. In my (and your) state you've got the delay before the court even appoints the personal representative, then the four months of publication of notices to creditors, then dealing with any creditors that do show up, then disposing of any personal property and real estate (which can take an indefinite amount of time), then after all that crap is done, filing a tax return for the state.

Couple that with the fact that in Alaska the decedent may be entitled to the next year's PFD if he or she died after June 30, and it could be that it's not even possible to settle it in a year.

I'm involved in two right now. The simple one is going to total a year and half minimum. The complicated one has dragged on for four years now.

189 Any time someone starts saying "effectively bans", that means it doesn't expressly ban it.

If what Mike Lee has in store at the federal level is what has passed at the state level, then it is merely a positive age identification law, which forces pornography distributors to obtain names and government issued IDs from users as well as opening up pornography distributors to lawsuits should underage users access their product.

Because most pornography consumers don't want identify themselves and because most pornographic sites rely on a sketchy "check box if you are over 18" age verification process, most pornography distribution sites simply shut down their web access in states that pass these laws.

It's pretty sound law. We wouldn't allow bars to merely have a screen that says "Must be 21 to drink alcohol. Are you 21 Yes/No" to verify age, nor should the process be that simple for porn which is as harmful, if not more so, to society.

The state I live in recently passed this initiative, but a female Jewish judge put a TRO on it until the state appeals it, probably because all the big 3 porn sites are owned by Jews, including PornHub which is owned by a Rabbi.

So the actual estate for legal purposes was just a couple of used vehicles and what was in his bank account and that was under the threshold to need to go through the courts unless one of my sibs had fussed.

240 In UKistan and colonies, a hundredweight is 112 lbs (insanity, wickedness) and a ton is 2240 lbs.

Internet tells me that" Why is an imperial ton 2240 lbs?
A long ton is defined as exactly 2,240 pounds. The long ton arises from the traditional British measurement system: A long ton is 20 long hundredweight (cwt), each of which is 8 stone (1 stone = 14 pounds). Thus, a long ton is 20 × 8 × 14 lb = 2,240 lb"

Okaaay, that makes no sense. The Brits must have been drunk when they declared that A hundred weight is 8 time our 'stone' measurement rather than 100 times our pound measurement.

The metric ton at least makes sense as 100 Kilograms.

307 I mentioned a couple of weeks ago I was having a heart test. I looked at those results yesterday. While I couldn't understand 99% of it, I did see Ejection Fraction (EF). That's a measurement of the heart's ability to pump blood; a normal EF is a range between 60 and 70%. My EF had been around 32. This test showed it to be in the range of 20-25%, not a good drop. I'll find out what all this means on 5/30 when I see the doctor.

Oh well.

The Hanks thing was creepier of course - Comey obviously positioned the rocks then took the picture himself.

Nothing in the steel or aluminum business. None of the bulk castings can be measured or controlled that fine. Less than 5 lbs out of 2200 ? Fuck that. Everyone in charge and involved would simply be thrilled if no bulk castings were rejected. For impurities ... hollows ... and such.

The steel and aluminum industries employ the "Bakers Dozen" at a smaller scale. And always will. Now and again - somebody will try to invoke the third digit. They get taken to the floor and shown thats its an engineering miracle everything works to the first digit.

2.2 lbs / kg is plenty good enough.

I got interested in how in Britain, a "hundredweight" became 112 lbs. Ultimately, it was the wool trade.

There was a concept of a "long hundred", 120, or six score, which is 6*20 = 12*10. This was not used for weights, but for item counts. Somehow in the wool trade, that "long hundred" as a count of some quantity of wool, set the weight standard as a "long hundred's" weight, which was ultimately defined as 112 lbs.

356 Tammy al-Thor,

Those are 5/30 questions. I'm sure there will be a tweaking to existing meds and maybe something new (oh joy!).

But I was also told when my journey started 20 years ago that eventually my heart will no longer be viable due to scarring/damage. I was told that when that happens, it's time for a transplant. They won't do those, though, unless one is on death's door, which I'm (technically) not.

So the game plan, with the ICD and the meds, was to keep me stable for as long as possible. That's been the case so far. Maybe there's something they can do or maybe this is my new normal. Like I say, I'll find out in a couple of weeks. Can't worry about it 'cause I can't change it. Whatever will be will be, que sera sera. Or something like that. I'm pretty fatalistic at this point.

Technically he is a rabbi. Lots of people get valid ordinations as rabbis. It it mainly a knowledge test. I know lots of people who are ordained but never officiated as rabbis in their lives.

People like that who use or promote the title on anything other than a job resume are always suspicious in my mind. I do not see Friedman flaunting his title. It is mentioned in the last paragraph on his page at ECP's website:

https://tinyurl.com/bdz3aybt

Every one of the non-officiating rabbis I know or the ones who have left the rabbinate for another livelihood altogether, do not use their title on a daily basis. So far as I see, Friedman is no different in that respect.

With all that being said, this just looks like another case of a law office taking on the defense of the ugliest of clients to make a profit.

Right. The dude's own Time Magazine article says the guy has never worked as a rabbi.

"Even before his ordination in Jerusalem, however, he knew he wasn’t going to be a rabbi. "I didn't want to be ministering to people," he says. "If I wasn't buying what I was selling, no one else would buy it either." He decided instead to go to law school..."

I also found his "Unless Time Magazine is lying to us..." bit highly amusing.

The issue isn't whether they were infallible. The issue is about the original understanding of the text they ratified. That text certainly didn't bar outlawing obscenity, and the understanding of obscenity wasn't anywhere as near narrow as it has become in contemporary law. If you want a different constitution, you should have to amend it, not get nine (five really) judges to reinterpret it to what they would have preferred the text to say. Pretending a right to porn is enshrines in the constitution is no different than pretending it prohibits criminalizing homosexuality and mandates the legality of gay marriage. There's no point in having a written document if you're going to adopt that kind of living constitutionalism.

Sorry you're going thru the Estate Troubles.

I'm rep of my Dad's estate (Mom long gone) and Dad had previously-- couple months before he died-- signed over a vacation property to older bro that was *supposed to be* shared. My other bro & I both witnessed him PROMISING Dad that he would share, just like when Dad owned it. Everybody had a key.

Oh, no-- bro decided *he* would not only dictate/severely limit everyone else's use of that property, but prevent entirely and he promptly changed the locks as soon as Dad died.

I had no trouble getting bro to sign an Estate Resolution Agreement (ALL us kids had to sign) that a-hole bro would receive nothing further from the estate. Now he can feel *justified* in keeping us out, but at least we don't have to give him a share of the house proceeds...

Ugh.

415 Joke's on older bro!

Since Dad "quitclaimed" the property to him, the Cost Basis is what Mom & Dad originally paid. If Dad had simply let it go into the Estate, the Cost Basis would've been "current market value" at the time Dad passed...

In short: If bro ever decides to sell, he will get totally screwed on capital gain tax.

When you don't like the decision over-ruling your understanding of the contract - its a travesty. But when you do like the decison over-ruling popular will ? Its justice. Because then its in tune with "the Founders". And more importantly - it suits you.

See how this gets tedious ? Its like being in a Theocracy. A Founders Ocracy. On many things ... I simply do not care about Washington's or Franklin's opinion.
