Bird Dancing Colors1.jpg

Dancing Colors
JoAnn Bird

In Dancing Colors, JoAnn Bird communicates through color, texture, and technique the energy and sound of the modern powwow. It's no accident the title is what it is. Color explodes off the canvas. Blues and blacks make up a base upon which Bird applied reds and oranges, which flash and pop against the dark background. They remind me of a bonfire.

Without the white, these colors would become a vibrating blob. White defines form. Notice how it’s used: as belts, feathered headdresses, leggings and sleeves. Unlike the cacophony of the others, white appears to be applied methodically. The strokes have a visual rhythm and remind me of the beat of the drums to which these figures are dancing.

The top of the painting is a white field splashed with red, orange, green, blue, and black — the same colors as below. I think this is a nice contrast against the lower section. There is so much commotion in the lower two-thirds that the calm top counters it. However, Bird understood that if the area were solid white, it would look odd. The lower half is so active and vibrant that it would overpower the top, so she adds quick, Pollock-like splatters of color to liven it up. Just as the white breaks up the colors in the bottom, the colors here break up the white. I think it’s visually interesting.

How Bird applied her paint is important, too. She didn’t paint this with a brush. She used a palette knife. Large gobs of paint were scooped up and slapped and smeared onto the canvas. As a result, the paint is thick and textured. If you could touch it (don’t do this, however), you’d be able to feel the ridges and edges of the strokes. Then, as mentioned above, she splattered more paint across the top. These techniques are, themselves, very active and dramatic and enhance the motion of the dancers.

When I look at Dancing Colors, I see a love and pride for tradition and culture. JoAnn Bird, a Dakota Sioux, could have painted a naturalistic scene with beautiful, colorful costumes, swaying tassels, and twinkling bells. She could have shown us the gestures and movements of the dancers. But that wasn’t her goal. This painting is expressively abstract. Bird wanted me to feel and hear this piece, not just see it. Bird’s tassels of color blaze with energy and movement. Her technique creates the beat. Dancing Colors is not about a powwow. It’s about the experience of the powwow.

95 This isn't the kind of painting I usually pay attention to. Just sort of blobs of color. But the intensity of the colors and the angles of the brush/knife strokes gives it a form that gradually (in my case) draws in the viewer. The artist considers herself an Impressionist although not in a Monet fashion with its small dabs of color. If there were such a thing, I would call her technique 'suggestive'. The color choices and placement of the paint, the angles of the figures creating movement, it all 'suggests' an image and feel for the viewer. The headdresses of the figures are the only real indication that this involves dancing at a powwow. It could easily be flames in a breeze or flowing water reflecting light. The rest is left to the imagination and experience of the audience.

Reese immediately declared the Indiana fans racist for shouting racial slurs at her (again, there's ZERO evidence of this) sparking a WNBA investigation.

Clark, who's repeatedly declared her success 'white privilege,' says 'there's no need for that' in the game and people should be ashamed of themselves.

They're BOTH destroying the magnificent opportunity they have.

Yes, they were. The original horses that the plains tribes used were descendants of those that Cortez brought over, they flourished when they got loose, as many did. Of course all of the other colonizers brought horses with them as well.

As far as what caused the general extinction of megafauna in North America towards the end of the last Ice Age, I'm partial to the theory (with some evidence) that a large meteor struck the Laurentide Ice Sheet, massively changing all weather patterns for hundreds of years. 183 UnitedHealth shares fell in premarket trading after a Guardian report that the company made secret payments to nursing homes to reduce hospital transfers added to the troubles of the healthcare conglomerate.

The alleged action, part of a series of cost-cutting tactics, has saved the company millions, but at times risked residents’ health, the Guardian reported, citing an investigation.

Reese has zero strength and takes every shot looking for a foul, contested or uncontested. That's why she can't shoot. You're supposed to be coached to go up strong and make shots. She can't.

She'll be out of the league after her first contract because she's shown she's uncoachable.

Her ego is bigger than her desire to succeed at basketball.

JoAnn Bird

Wow. From what I have seen there is a class of modern American art, often with Western themes that negates the 19th century realism and goes whole hog, spread eagle, hell bent in capturing the spiritual realism found in Western American - the kind that leaves you suddenly bawling your eyes out while sitting on the rim of the Grand Canyon or sitting amongst the Chaco Canyon ruins. Moving to New Mexico drilled this idea in to my soul - this place is a cathedral to me. Ms. Bird, with exquisite artistry, captured the human story that has been going on in this cathedral for centuries. This piece transcends its medium and becomes something more, something that needs no explanation because it profundity is so self-evident.
