Wednesday Morning Rant

Troll Week

I am by no means sure that the Trump Administration does "theme weeks," but weeks like this make me wonder. If there has been a theme for the past week or so, that theme may be "trolling." It hasn't all been trolling, of course. Presidenting is serious business, and Trump's fairly blunt attack on the interventionist, manipulative, ineffective and disastrous Uniparty of the past thirty years during his address in Saudi Arabia was not trolling. Nor is his deal-making in that country (though I admit generous skepticism as to how much of it actually comes to fruition).

But much this week has a tinge of trolling about it. Like all good trolling, it has a real purpose. The goal is not merely to needle your enemies and make them howl in rage, but to also achieve your own ends. Trump has done a good job on that front, too. The past week has been both hilarious and fairly effective in terms of the agenda. Here's a roundup of my favorite stories of the past week.

May 8: transgender military ban and separation

Under the new guidelines, active duty troops will have until June 6 to voluntarily identify themselves to the department, and troops in the National Guard and Reserve will have until July 7.
The timing cannot go unnoticed, nor can the dates. The final day to quit before being fired is the anniversary of D-Day and that anniversary, of course, occurs during Pride Month. Yes, Hegseth and the Trump Administration have chosen to end trannies in the military during "Pride Month" and finish the job just after Independence Day, starting on the anniversary of America's greatest foreign invasion. The timing is perfectly designed to cause maximum impotent rage among leftists.

May 11: the 747

Air Force One is a modified Boeing 747. Two exist, and the president flies on both, which are more than 30 years old. Boeing Inc. has the contract to produce updated versions, but delivery has been delayed while the company has lost billions of dollars on the project.
And that is, of course, the reason. This debacle dates back to Trump's first administration, when he told Boeing to take their ludicrous plans and shove it, and get a plane out within the remaining life of anyone currently living and do so at a reasonable price. Boeing has catastrophically failed to deliver. I dig it that Air Force One is a big, complicated piece of equipment but the timelines and pricetags involved are ludicrous to say the least. The reason for this is very clear, even if the transfer never actually happens (and it may well not). This is a shot across Boeing's bow, whatever is left of it. "Y'all have been screwing around for a decade and I'm tired of it. I'll take a used plane from the Arabs and get the USAF to bring it up to snuff, and it'll happen before you guys can get one done. You built one for them, so I'll just roll with that since you apparently can't build one for us." This isn't about a plane, it's about Boeing and that this is even being discussed is humiliating for the company. That is the point.

May 12: the Afrikaners

The U.S. refugee program was created by Congress in 1980, and groups have sued to restart it after Trump's halt.

Traditionally, to qualify as a refugee, applicants must demonstrate a well-founded fear of persecution due to race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group, or political opinion. Refugees are distinct from asylum-seekers because refugees must be outside of the U.S. to qualify.

A network of resettlement agencies generally helps refugees settle in their new homes, and they get 90 days of federal assistance for things like rent. The Episcopal Church’s migration service, however, is refusing a directive from the federal government to help resettle the white South Africans, citing the church's longstanding "commitment to racial justice and reconciliation.:

I am on the fence at best about "refugee resettlement" as such, but there is at least a viable argument to be had here. White South Africans are increasingly in danger, and it's about to get a lot worse with that country's new "land reform" act, not that the American Press is interested. Like with their treatment of everything from Hamas to Iran to Red China, they credulously believe everything South Africa's government says and therefore there are no problems in South Africa. Trump is wrong, this is racism, they don't mean it when they chant "Kill the Boer," there is no record of farm murders, etc. With one act, Trump has managed to get the entire Left to finally find a group of refugees they will go on the record of rejecting wholly and completely: a few dozen white farmers. Many are like the Episcopalians and quite clear about why: no whites welcome. CNN's Ashley Allison, Jeremy Konyndyk of "Refugees International" and countless others are on the same page. Some pretend otherwise, falling back on tired excuses involving the UN and the Government of South Africa. But Trump, as he always does, made them show their true motivations. They love refugees - so long as they're non-white and preferably non-Christian. Trump, as they demanded, is allowing some refugees in and they absolutely hate it.

Those are my top three. What did I miss?

Correct.

L3Harris, a subcontractor is. At least that's the outfit that's been mentioned. And even at that, the US military will supply a great deal of the kit that goes into the communications suite, the defensive systems and everything else that make the aircraft "safe" for the President.

IMO there hasn't been a clear reason provided by Boeing as to why they're years behind schedule and 100's of millions over budget.

And, it's not clear how this "Qatari jet" is going to get modified to suit the requirements for AF-1 anytime sooner than the ones Boeing is working on. It's going to have to be gutted too...

70 The other thing we've learned from the Afrikaner kerfuffle is that people who have been in South Africa for nearly 500 years continue to be "colonists" who should go back to their home countries, while Muhammad who showed up last Thursday in your country is now just as much as a "native" as you are.

The official reason why the German government put AfD under intensified surveillance (before it backed down) is that the AfD considers a Muslim immigrant who's acquired German citizenship to be less German then someone whose ancestors have been in Germany for millennia.

That is no longer an acceptable view to hold.

77 I think the Qatar 747 is a newer, larger version of the airframe, so they couldn't simply gut one of the existing AF1's and transfer the interior to the new plane, but I expect a lot of the comms, ECM's and whatnot could be transferred wholesale.

80 IMO there hasn't been a clear reason provided by Boeing as to why they're years behind schedule and 100's of millions over budget.

And, it's not clear how this "Qatari jet" is going to get modified to suit the requirements for AF-1 anytime sooner than the ones Boeing is working on. It's going to have to be gutted too...

As I understand it, the new Boeing AF1s -- which I don't think are literally brand new -- won't be ready until early 2030s. Which means we won't see them until 2035 at the earliest. I personally think we'll never see them.

The Qatar substitute supposedly can be ready by 2028 or 2029.

Who knows how true any of this is. But if it embarrasses Boeing, and drives liberals nuts, then I'm all for it.

85 The official reason why the German government put AfD under intensified surveillance (before it backed down) is that the AfD considers a Muslim immigrant who's acquired German citizenship to be less German then someone whose ancestors have been in Germany for millennia.

Reminds me of how the UN considers the only "native" peoples in Europe to be the Sami, nomadic reindeer herders who live north of the Arctic Circle in Scandinavia. The key trait is they aren't considered white.

McDonnell Douglas was run by accountants, and manufactured mediocre commercial aircraft (at best).

So, the two companies merged, and somehow it was McDonnell Douglas' management who took over the merged company.

Yea. I think the real reason is that the original arrangement (by Obama, IIRC) was for an obscene amount of money that bore little relation to the actual costs of the plane. Boeing was obviously fleecing American taxpayers.

After Trump renegotiated the deal to something more reasonable, Boeing's incentive to deliver the jets was greatly reduced. They're no longer making piles of money, so why bother? As I comment above, I doubt they'll ever deliver them at the current contract price.

A: Thirty years. 300 years

The other thing we've learned from this is even though apartheid ended thirty years ago, and blacks have been running the South African American government since then, today's Afrikaners Whites continue to be guilty of apartheid, and should be punished for centuries to come.

They certainly shouldn't be allowed into the United States.

Same reason that road work is never finished on time. Basically, Boeing is building the planes where it makes more money than government contracts and so they keep the AF1 project on the back burner for when times are slow in business.

Plus, they are a poorly managed piece of crap company that have nickelf*ckers as managers. Dysfunctional and unlikely to improve unless competition exists to force them to concentrate on actual business than revenue extraction.

It is not just division, it is strategic division, where the fractures are deepened along lines of race, class, ideology, religion, gender, or even conspiracy belief systems until cohesion becomes impossible and conflict becomes inevitable.

A population so fractured it can't organize, can't resist, and can't agree on anything long enough to demand accountability."

Boeing is an example of a company that comes to rest upon its laurels while being gutted by its management. Unfortunately, we do not have new American companies ready to stand up in building new aircraft as that is extremely high in capital costs and experienced technical staff. Plus, Boeing still serves as key military contractor for such things as Air Tankers among other aerospace requirements including the newest jet fighter.

So Boeing has to be fixed and reliance on the markets to do so won't work. Dunno how to do it though.

Bound States to Bands in the Continuum in Cylindrical Granular Crystals

From the Science News sort of summary I read last night I assumed, erroneously, that these Korean researchers were using clever nanotechnology to achieve their results. They are using macro scale quartz cylinders in chains: 3 cm and even 9 cm long to do it! Clever indeed! The above title is from their Phys Rev Lttrs paper dated 3 Apr 2025. Stupendous work! You can undoubtedly find the abstract at Google Scholar, but you will need a subscription or access to a university library’s resources to read the full text (that’s the way I did it - my university grants full library access to it’s retired faculty - but it’s a hassle, with dual authentication and passwords they make you change every three months! A better deal is half price access to the Recreation and Activities Center, the RAC, where they’ve got a well designed indoor competitive pool with lanes set up for laps - I’ve got to get back in the pool as soon as I recover from this surgery!).
