UK PM Keir Starmer Makes Empty Promise to Reduce Immigration

Many people headlined this story "Keir Starmer commits racist hate-crime" because Keir Starmer will send his Orewellian enforcers to arrest you for expressing the same feelings about immigration that he now claims to feel.

Starmer has been attempting to exploit the Conservatives' weakness on this issue for some time. Yes, the UK "Conservatives" are in favor of the EU and also in favor of uncontrolled, never-ending immigration. That's why they were turned out of power last year, and that's why Reform stole 2/3rds of their vote in the recent council elections.

Back in December 2024, I posted about Starmer blaming immigration on the Conservatives.

The leftwing Starmer is every bit as pro-uncontrolled-immigration as the Tories... but it was the Tories who actually allowed uncontrolled immigration for ten years.

Now Starmer is decrying a "failed experiment in open borders."

Again, it is 100% true that anyone who is not a high-ranking leftwing government official would be arrested for saying this.

But Starmer is worried about his grasp on power, so he's decided he's permitted some racist hate-speech.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced tighter British immigration rules, declaring an end to what he called a "squalid chapter" and a "failed experiment in open borders."
In a speech Monday, Starmer vowed to "take back control" with new rules that make it harder to obtain work, family and student visas to the United Kingdom. Migrant rights advocates criticized his wording as being more typical of the far right than of his center-left Labour Party.
"The damage [immigration] has done to our country is incalculable," the prime minister wrote in a policy paper.
Starmer said the changes, which still need Parliament's approval, are needed to maintain social cohesion, drive investment in the local workforce and prevent Britain from becoming "an island of strangers."

An island of strangers?

You're saying that tens of thousands of illegal aliens aren't family members, but "strangers"?

This is obviously true but Starmer will send his cops to arrest you if you suggest this.

His proposals come less than two weeks after the far-right anti-immigration Reform U.K. Party, led by Nigel Farage -- a confidant of President Trump -- made big gains in some local and municipal elections across England.
Data shows net migration to the U.K. has more than tripled in the past decade. Indians are the largest recipients of U.K. visas. And in recent months, Americans have been applying for British citizenship in record numbers.
Experts say the changes aim to reverse an unexpected spike in immigration after Britain left the European Union.
"After Brexit, a new immigration system came in under the previous [Conservative] government that was surprisingly liberal, and there was a big and unexpected increase in migration to the U.K.," says Madeleine Sumption, director of the Migration Observatory at the University of Oxford. "When they saw how big the numbers were, they started to roll back some of those liberalizations and made some restrictions."
"The current government is keeping those existing restrictions and rolling back the liberalizations, taking us back to a system that's broadly similar to what we had for non-EU citizens before the U.K. left the EU," she says.

Polls show most Britons want their government to do more to fight illegal types of migration, especially smugglers carrying people to England in small boats across the channel from France.

In a statement emailed to NPR, Steve Smith, CEO of Care4Calais, a charity that works with migrants and refugees, called Starmer's language "dangerous."
"Shameful language like this will only inflame the fire of the far-right and risks further race riots that endanger survivors of horrors such as war, torture and modern slavery," Smith wrote. "Starmer must apologize."
One of Starmer's own Labour members of Parliament, Nadia Whittome, wrote on social media that the prime minister's language "mimics the scaremongering of the far-right."

Another left-wing lawmaker, Zarah Sultana, questioned whether Starmer's speech had actually been written by far-right lawmaker Farage.
And another former Starmer colleague, parliamentarian John McDonnell, compared the prime minister's "island of strangers" reference to the "divisive language of Enoch Powell." Powell was a Conservative member of Parliament who made an infamous 1968 speech that's widely considered one of the most racist and incendiary in modern British history.

Remember when I said you'd be arrested for that in the UK?

I wasn't just lying like Jake Tapper. A former cop was just arrested for questioning the rise of antisemitism in the UK -- I think he may have suggested that the rise was due to New Diverse Arrivals -- and was arrested for having "Brexity books" in his house.

A group of young men stormed the Montfavet church in Avignon on Saturday evening, shouting, "Allahu Akbar" and threatening to burn the church down -- an act of intimidation that forced police to guard the building during Sunday's morning Mass.

Laurent Milan, the parish priest, the confrontation began when a teenage boy arrived at the church claiming he wanted to convert. Soon after, around 10 others followed, some stating they were Muslims and asking to come inside.
According to reports by La Provence, the group quickly turned aggressive. "One of them began running around. They gathered around the priest and started hurling insults. It was chaos. We struggled to get them out," one parishioner told the French news outlet.
According to Fr. Milan, the young men hurled explicit insults targeting Christianity and made repeated threats. "They didn't insult me directly, but they shouted things like, 'Jesus, we're f***ing you,'" he said. "They were shouting 'Allahu Akbar,' and told us several times, 'We're going to come back and burn your church.'"
The priest filed a police complaint that same night, and five witnesses are understood to have already spoken to law enforcement. A police source confirmed an investigation is underway for "non-public insults because of religion" and "threats of dangerous destruction to persons."
As of Sunday, no arrests had been made, while worshippers arriving for the day's morning service were met with patrol cars and visible security.
According to Fr. Milan, the church has seen a spike in anti-social and threatening behavior in recent weeks. Just days earlier, on May 7, another group of youths disrupted a parish meeting by shouting and banging on the windows.
"We've had a computer stolen, candles taken," he said. "Some even throw their ball against the church walls during Mass, deliberately trying to disrupt us."
"This isn't just disrespect," Fr. Milan added. "This is a threat, and it's not the first."

Their real problems started in the 1990s under Blair.
He really got the ball rolling with the whole Multiculturalism crusade that half of Europe went on during the same time.

They've had high immigration from other Commonwealth nations since the 1950s.

Enoch Powell was warning them back in the 1960s, especially with his "Rivers of Blood" speech, decrying the effects that immigration from totally different cultures was going to alter England's native culture forever and eventually lead to civil war.

Starmer himself echoed some of Powell's exact warnings of "strangers in their own country," in his latest speech with this line: "Without controlled migration, we risk becoming an island of strangers."

He's taking some flack right now especially for that line.

Their main problem now is the absolutely uncontrolled amount of illegal immigration coming across the Channel in small boats.

Nobody but Farage has even hinted at ending the problems.
He's proposing a Minister for Deportation in his cabinet.

That alone is probably getting him millions of votes.

Not uncommon. The whole indentured servant regime was that the servants would serve out their term, get an amount of agreed-up land, and then hire indentured servants of their own. The system broke down as the regime moved to slavery rather than IS, but there were some slaves who got their freedom, some land, and then became slave owners themselves.

Remember the movie Amistad? Based on a true story. What they didn't tell you is that the main slave characters (including Djimon's character) eventually went back to Africa and ... became slavers themselves.

The whole deal with the Houthi's is circumspect. The aggressive action taken by Trump was a prerequisite to meeting with the Saudis. Saudi Arabia is, basically, responsible for keeping Yemen from imploding for whatever reason (there are many). It's an adhoc location overseen by the Saudis to keep Iran in check. They suck at it, and Trump likely put more effort into settling down the Houthi's in order to acquire favorable cooperation with the Saudis.

The Houthi's will give it a few months and resort back to their slow motion suicide at the direction of the Iranians. (Which is why Trump is trying to work out an agreement of sorts with the Iranians via envoys at the same time he's meeting with the Saudis)

Heh... I remember reading about a military outpost in the high Arctic, back in the '60s.

Due to the sort of glitch for which the military is famed, they somehow wound with about 10x the amount of canned pineapple in their supply dump that they should have.

Freedom of the seas has been a constant in US foreign policy since 1798 btw. and our biggest advantage has been the large oceans between us and adversaries. That requires a Navy to ward off those that would hurt us.

FWIW, they have went back to beef tallow for their fries and they have quite nice milkshakes.

They overextended too fast earlier than some of the more recent franchises and suffered through bankruptcy because of it.

They also serve a decent breakfast if you happened to need traditional fare.

I don't care for their sweet taste but my wife adores them. Okra depends on whether you find a good purveyor of fried okra that has a decent coating of cornmeal. Boiled is pretty disgusting.

I do use okra as an ingredient in gumbo and some related dishes as well. But you can substitute celery to much of the same effect.

Probably her "brother" Stirling will run me another $140 for his visit. That may have to wait for a bit.

There is actually a theory that it is the final expression of Westfalian system of government that had basically surrendered all the elements of statehood to Brussels and the EU, and continues to try to seize all outlying states by attempting to intervene in everyone's reserved rights out of the need to eliminate threats to its existence.

This is backed by the proposition that the whole system has become a way of manipulating the methods that states are allowed to operate to ensure that Brussels and the EU always wind up profiting, and in the end it looks like it will turn into a massive incompetency that no one wants to deal with, like Venezuela, or collapse into uncoordinated local states.

Well, for starters, the Saudis making a $600 Billion investment in the US seems above and beyond the US serving as the world's cop. There's a difference in approach with the current administration. Keep in mind that the State Dept. has been neutered to some extent in the region. Trump named envoys who report directly to him. He's done that with all the hot spots. It cuts the State Dept. out of influence to some extent. Isn't it telling that Rubio has all this time to take up control of all these flailing agencies rather than serving State Dept. duties? He's making Rubio prove his allegiance.

On another level, by dealing directly with Iran, it has the potential to lower costs in defending Israel.

If you make a lot of money, you currently pay 37% in Fed Taxes, and in Calif 13% in State... then add in Soc Sec and Mediscare... and you are well over 50%... and that does not include Sales Tax (here 7%), and then Property Tax... so yer suddenly giving 60% to the Sovereign...

Feudalism is probably not scaleable since it is modeled on the family and clan pattern, both of which require personal contact to maintain. Aaaaaand, feudalism was probably never "efficient" and always strove to create and maintain an unchanging status quo. This is another situation where the ruling and warrior castes needed to prevent any incursions into their status. They were only effective in small conflicts. Feudalism broke down under the needs to mobilize and supply mass armies, and it is an interesting datum that the Rules based system we live under now began at the treaty of Westphalia at the end of the 30 years war, the war that essentially the end of European feudalism by being the situation where mass armies were needed for state level warfare instead of elite warriors.

Yes...they are. Which is, absolutely, hilarious because it sets up a constant deluge of "big reveals" when things work according to plan. It highlights the administration favorably while chewing deeper in to media bias. And, similarly, it negates the fallout on those things that don't go according to plan because they are already harking on a perceived failure without any evidence or details. The media is being played like a fiddle. Even I can see that, and I'm not the biggest Trump fan although I support most of what he's trying to do.

Schumer was all over the place yesterday saying that Trump "blinked" on the China tariffs. Watch what happens next.

464 Honeycrisp apples were da bomb when they were all grown in the Midwest, where they were originally bred. But when mass production in the PNW started the quality /consistency went to hell. There were problems with adaptation and while some from there are good, many are mediocre to terrible.

Try Cosmic Crisp, which is equal or better than Honeycrisp at it's best and is being ramped up more carefully to avoid the problems.

I don't care for spring and summer apples though, even the types that are reputed to store well are so so much better in fall/winter.
