Inflation Falls "Faster Than Expected," Reaching Lowest Level Since 2021

But but but Trump said he would immediately cut inflation and taking two or three weeks isn't "immediate"

* The consumer price index rose a seasonally adjusted 0.2% for the month, putting the 12-month inflation rate at 2.3%, its lowest since February 2021.

* The core CPI also increased 0.2% for the month, while the year-over-year level was 2.8%.

* Egg prices tumbled, falling 12.7%, though they were still up 49.3% from a year ago.

* While the April CPI figures were relatively tame, the Trump tariffs remain a wild card in the inflation picture, depending on where negotiations go between now and the summer.

Inflation was slightly lower than expected in April as President Donald Trump's tariffs just began hitting the slowing U.S. economy, according to a Labor Department report Tuesday.

The consumer price index, which measures the costs for a broad range of goods and services, rose a seasonally adjusted 0.2% for the month, putting the 12-month inflation rate at 2.3%, its lowest since February 2021, the Bureau of Labor Statistics said. The monthly reading was in line with the Dow Jones consensus estimate while the 12-month was a bit below the forecast for 2.4%.

Excluding volatile food and energy prices, the core CPI also increased 0.2% for the month, while the year-over-year level was 2.8%. The forecast was for 0.3% and 2.8%, respectively.

The monthly readings were a bit higher than in March though price increases remain well off their highs of three years ago.

Markets reacted little to the news, with stock futures pointing flat to slightly lower and Treasury yields mixed.

″"Good news on inflation, and we need it given inflation shocks from tariffs are on their way," said Robert Frick, corporate economist at Navy Federal Credit Union. "Non-tariffed goods are still in the pipeline, and perhaps some importers have absorbed their tariff costs for now."

Shelter prices again were the main culprit in pushing up the inflation gauge. The category, which makes about one-third of the index weighting, increased 0.3% in April, accounting for more than half the overall move, according to the BLS.

After posting a 2.4% slide in March, energy prices rebounded, with a 0.7% gain. Food saw a 0.1% decline.

Used vehicle prices saw their second straight drop, down 0.5%, while new vehicles were flat. Apparel costs also were off 0.2% though medical care services increased 0.5%. Health insurance increased 0.4% while motor vehicle insurance was up 0.6%.

Egg prices tumbled, falling 12.7%, though they were still up 49.3% from a year ago.

With the increase in CPI, real average hourly earnings were flat for the month and up 1.4% from a year ago.

While the April CPI figures were relatively tame, the Trump tariffs remain a wild card in the inflation picture, depending on where negotiations go between now and the summer.

...

"Overall, there was no sign of the tariff impact in the April CPI. Although we expect higher tariffs will likely exert upward pressures on core CPI, starting in May, weakening of consumer demand and an inventory drawdown might mitigate the inflationary pressure," Nomura economist Aichi Amemiya said in a note.

Grocery prices rose the slower than they have in five full years.

JP Morgan has now retracted its prediction of a recession in 2025. They say the China tariff pause has made a recession unlikely. So, mostly their recession prediction was based on China tariffs.

Now that the econ news is too positive to continue to support "recession, recession, recession" propaganda, JP Morgan is pretending that the China tariff deal -- which happened like 48 hours ago -- is instantaneously changing JP Morgan's entire econ outlook.

73 Tariffs are a tax and have disinflationary effects via reduced aggregate demand! It's not straightfoward if the tariffs will reduce inflation due to this disinflationary effect or increase inflation due to reducing productivity (from taxing more efficiently made foreign goods). Or if short term effects like the price shock raises inflation expectations (which feed into realized higher inflation).

Are these the real numbers? Sorry but like the boy who cried wolf, after time, people just won't believe you.

It's possible the tariffs don't destroy the economy. Trump has made enough concessions that we're looking at a very real possibility that nothing actually happens.

Democrats maybe overplayed their hand by pushing the narrative of a modern great depression in response to the tariffs and... it's possible the economy continues to just chug along.

30% on China good right now is HUGE. Just not as ridiculous as 145%

Trump set the expectation to prices going up, so when they don't go up as much as projected, it was a win for him.

It's a cultish faith. I guess some argument could be made that the USA is so dependent on cheap Chinese goods to support its own manufacturing and sales that any increase in the price of Chinese goods ripples through and increases all prices to the point of digressionary impact.

I don't think that's correct, but it's an argument. I don't think they're making that argument, though. I think they're just taking it as a point of cultish faith that anything that's "bad" for China is bad for the USA too. Like if Nike has to pay $5 for slave-made sneakers, rather than the prior $3, then the entire USA economy will teeter and fall. For reasons.

83 That was a good piece from Strom about JP Morgan walking back the recession prediction.

We'll see how it all goes, but China talks a good game when they have no other choice, and then rarely deliver.

Trump knows this as they burned us on the last deal he made with them.

That's why I expect the tariffs on China won't go below 25% on a lot of products because they can't be trusted to keep any deals they make to reduce their surplus by buying American exports.

Democrats maybe overplayed their hand by pushing the narrative of a modern great depression in response to the tariffs and... it's possible the economy continues to just chug along.

=====

Underlying this is, of course, the assumption that Trump's end goal is 150% tariffs on the world.

Which flies in the face of everything he's ever said about tariffs.

He obviously wants some, a reliance on it over internal taxation, but he's also always said that it's about negotiation as much as anything else. 150% tariffs on China were about punishing the Chinese nation hard and fast as possible to get concessions, not about an eternal tariff level.

It was his opening gambit. It was his Art of the Deal.

But the left keeps talking like the 150% tariffs was the end-goal.

At worst, our consumption of Chinese made goods collapses. That would negatively affect GDP, for sure, but since imports are actually counted against GDP, the longer term effect of fewer Chinese product purchases would be greater GDP, not lesser. We'd be importing less, even if we replaced it with nothing.

And, since we grow our own food (it's like 90% or something), it's not like an import ban from China would have a huge affect on staples to keep life going.

133 There’s also a cultish faith that taxes are deflationary, which is clearly wrong. (I think people mean disinflationary, but even then it’s incorrect.)

Inflation is complex, but it’s a monetary phenomenon. The biggest two drivers are money supply and velocity of money. Taxes don’t decrease the supply of money, unless the Federal Reserve is actively monetizing new debt through QE, which they are not presently doing.

As for velocity of money, that’s a whole other conversation, but economists just pretend it’s static or shrinking most of the time.

What taxes do is take money and redistribute it. Instead of being invested in actual business expansion, the money is mostly used for consumption, driving up demand for good and services while starving the market of capital to invest in expansion.

Premier Smith has already stated she wouldn't stop a citizen led referendum on separation from the Canadian federation.
Around 36% of Albertans already support the idea.

If it ever happens then they could make their own republic, or join the U.S. on a fast track to statehood.

If they ever decide to do that, Saskatchewan would probably follow along, and maybe even British Colombia.

232 Premier Smith has already stated she wouldn't stop a citizen led referendum on separation from the Canadian federation.
Around 36% of Albertans already support the idea.

She said she would respect the result of a vote. But she also pledged to do everything she could to stop a yes vote.

If a vote were to take place the entire world would line up to keep it from passing. If Alberta separated it would blow up so much shit, no way it’s allowed to happen. It opens up the door for Basque separation, North Italy, all sorts of chaos the globalists don’t want to deal with.

She says she's not in favor of separation herself, but she won't stop it if people gather enough signatures and follow procedures for a referendum.

Smith made a speech last week to her province laying out 5 demands she was making to Carney and the Liberal government.

Access to ports to be able to ship their oil out of Canada (their only customer currently is us).

Build pipelines, refineries and other industry so they can export their main products easier.

Make the Equalization Act fairer so that Alberta, Sak and B.C. aren't paying money to Ontario and Quebec.

I forget the rest of the details, but those are the main concerns.

She is serious about those demands, and if Carney refuses, ya never know what could happen.

274 Alberta isn't going anywhere. The way they wrote the Law that applies toward secession (ironically called The Clarity Law) doesn't distinguish just what amount is needed to leave. They use weasel words like "clear majority" and "major will of the people."

That's purposeful. Because the govt is Liberal, and they will define the terms. Their definition of "clear majority" will not be what Albertans believe the definition to be. The whole issue will got to court, which is, also, owned by the liberals. I would be entirely shocked if a clear 2/3rds or more is required to solidify Alberta going out on its own.

And don't think it wouldn't be conditional....such as securing percentage profits on the Oil Sands, as well as the heavy crude production. Then you have Danielle Smith who has outright stated in the past that she doesn't want Alberta to leave.

However, it would be quite comical if this happened before the end of the Stanley Cup Playoffs and Edmonton wins. The Cup stays in America.

314 unleaded gas was down to 2.79 gallon (or more) here in North Texas two weeks ago. Today it is 3.09 at many gas stations. Why did it go up again?
Posted by: Glenn at May 13, 2025 03:17 PM (RHTm0)

Gas bounces up and down all the time. 2.79 to 3.09 is 10%. That’s just normal ebb and flow of oil prices. It’s why gas isn’t included in the cpi calculation. It’s way too volatile.

I’ve found that of the two grocery stores I go to, one is almost impossible to find a good carton, and one is easy; so I only buy eggs at the latter. (Randalls, Texas’s version of Safeway.)

340 So, our political class decided thirty years ago that sending our industrial base offshore would make us more likable, wealthy, and more secure.
Welcome to reality! Too bad it took three decades and the orange scourge to snap our country out of it. Unfortunately, we’re $37 trillion dollars in debt and we’re less liked and less secure. Funny that the GOPe and the swamp want the present administration to fail. They may feel they’re immune, but when it does crash, they’ll be enjoying the same hell as the rest of us!

347 The tariffs were never inflationary. They are neither. How many dollars versus how productive the economy. They would have a chance to actually be deflationary.

I'm losing patience with people who don't know what it really means, who spout off liberal Keynesian talking points, who must have flunked econ 101. Though many econ 101 course probably love Keynes.

For goodness sakes people - inflation is caused by surplus dollars chasing less productive goods and services production. Rinse and repeat. And yes, gold is a fucking stupid thing to base your currency on.
