Flounder!
You were missed last weekend. Hope baseball season is awesome! Posted by: nurse ratched at May 13, 2025 07:58 PM (A9+Cm) I missed you guys, too. Baseball is a mixed bag. Little's started strong, then nobody can seem to field, and although he is doing alright, his hitting could be stronger. Oldest's has been pretty steadily competitive, and he has been starting to block as catcher, which is getting to be next level and is attracting attention from people commenting on his skills (only about 1 season). He got a walkoff 2 RBI double last week, then he was stopping mostly everything in last night's game, he had another opportunity to tie it up/walkoff, but he popped out with two outs. There is three possible reasons for this, one is that it is a group that used to think they were the end all be all of social change, and that they now have all the money and tell the younger generations to work harder, and are getting old and unable to defend themselves as good as they used to. Vaporized the national wealth? What are you snorting? The national wealth is still there. Farms still grow crops. Pumping Jennys still pump oil. Fracking makes us, not the Saudis, the most oil rich country in the world! The people are still here, and despite a lack of effort on their part, they can still be trained to perform every kind of productive work. We have 500 years of coal in the ground, at current usage levels, for crying our loud. Breeder reactors work, despite whatever Carter ordered, so we don’t really have to worry about running out of energy, ever! The PA judge's ruling allowing Trump to use the Alien Enemies Act has a huge point: Pirates.
She notes that, when the Act was written, the use of "incursions" was used--at the time--in reference to both pirates and robbers. Gangs like TdA didn't exist at the time. But, organized criminal groups like pirates and robbers did. So the rulings that forbid Trump's use are fatally flawed: They all focus almost solely on the must activity be directed by a foreign country. 1) The same young nation that sent a navy to bomb Tripoli pirates knew damned good and well what they were doing when they wrote the Act and used "incursion" 2) reading into the Act a requirement that "incursion" be directed by a nation renders the section superfluous--the prior subsection already permitted removal directed by a nation. Statutory interpretation should be read to give every part full effect, not read to obviate or eliminate one section over another. Anyway, you can see where the SCOTUS _should_ end up. -- The article didn't say. But, judges rarely come up with opinions on their own. They're largely cut-and-paste jobs from briefs. Amicus briefs are rare at the trial level. So, most likely, it was DOJ. If so, that person deserves a promotion. Because that's a very sound--and highly persuasive to the block that overturned Roe--historically accurate and relevant argument. When you're halfway through the cartwheel, you're "at the south pole" and 6 o'clock is on top. All the numbers get their turn as the "top" of the clock as you rotate. There has been a marked increase lately of video shorts which purport to have captured confrontations that clearly were staged. It is sad to think that there are folks who felt that such pathetic melodramas were worth recording in the first place. It's the same for moon phases. In the northern hemisphere, the moon gets light on the right side first as it goes from "new" to "full." The waxing crescent looks like this )
In the southern hemisphere, it's the other way, with the sun lighting it up from left to right, and the waxing crescent is like this ( At the equator, it lights up from the bottom to the top. Or the top to the bottom, depending on whether you look at it as it's rising or setting. And the crescent moon occasionally looks tilted and bowl-like even when you're away from the equator, since the moon's path isn't directly over the equator, and the earth is tilted on its axis. OT, but are there any good work pants out there that have reinforcement/padding of the knee area? In the new job I am having to kneel a ton to check parts. My knees are holding up surprisingly well, but it is killing my pants.

Think of the situation in three dimensions: the Moon is a sphere with one hemisphere, the less pock-marked one, always pointed at the center of the Earth (tidally locked, also why one side has more impactors than the other, also libation, but forget that). The Earth is a sphere, too. Imagine observers at different latitudes, from very far north (Nanook of the North), to someone on the equator (Jose in Quito, Ecuador) to some gaucho, Pablo, in southernmost Argentina. Each will see slightly different views of the Moon. How will they tell which way is “down”? They look from the Moon to their local horizon. That is “down”. If you can picture that in your head, I think it’s pretty easy to see how the image of the Moon gets “flipped” in South America (south of Quito) versus North America. Also, it is the subtle difference in angles why we see a face, the “Man in the Moon,” whereas the Japanese see a rabbit making mochi.

Posted by: Duncanthrax at May 13, 2025 09:53 PM (0sNs1) 277
The "flipping" and upside down and left right and all that is entirely due to you local reference frame. For example, imagine watching the Moon rise and set over the course of a night. First imagine using an alt-az mount scope tracking it. In that, the Moon or any object will appear to rotate. With an equatorial mount, rotating along an axis parallel with the earth's, there is no rotation. That makes a big difference for tracking with long exposures. The moon is not 'upside down' in the Southern hemisphere.
Posted by: Duncanthrax Correct. The moon isn't but you are. Take two globes. Earth and moon would be exact, but two earth globes shows how it works. Put a camera on the "north pole" of one and take a picture of the other. (With the bottom of the camera against the globe, as though you were standing there holding it.) You get a rightside-up globe picture. Put the camera on the "south pole" and do the same. Upside-down globe picture. Posted by: mikeski at May 13, 2025 09:58 PM (DgGvY) 290

Ah, but we’re all neglecting that the Moon’s orbit is tilted with respect to the Earth’s equator: +/- about 5[sup]。[/sup] with respect to the equator. Also the axis of the Earth’s spin is tilted about 23.49 [sup]。[/sup] with respect to it’s orbital plane with respect to the Sun. How those things affect the view is left as an exercise to the reader.
