Wednesday Overnight Open Thread - May 14, 2025 [TRex]

20180507-20180507-076A1909.jpg

Good evening Horde. The time has come for mid-week shenanigans of the overnight variety.

This is the Wednesday night ONT. It is also game night! Step inside and play along.

[Top photo: Ritter Sport Chocolate Factory, Waldenbuch, Germany]

***

TRex has an early morning, so looking for the Horde to behave itself. If you can't behave, at least be entertaining. Please observe proper ONT etiquette. Legally Sufficient has the Ruler of Dread and is authorized to wield it was warranted. JQ has the key to the kegerator, wine cellar and liquor cabinet. She also has apple juice if you desire an alcohol-free ONT. Ciampino has the sock drawer but mostly needs to stay away from cats. tcn in AK has a telescope on the roof so make an orderly line if you want to look in to the heavens or just spy on the neighbors. Miklosbot will scan the perimeter for intruders.

***

Guess how many Peeps are the jar. No clues other than the two photos:

20250417-IMG_20250417_1.jpg

20250417-IMG_20250417_2.jpg

I asked an AI tool to make an estimate based on the photos. It gave me a guess and a very convincing explanation of the logic. It was also nowhere close to the right answer.

The correct answer will be posted...later. Maybe next Wed.

***

New Yorker cartoon captions are generally insipid at best. The illustrations, however, offer a blank canvas for your own caption creations.

Do your worst. Just identify which cartoon you are captioning in your post.

Point Nemo - space and geography trivia for controlled de-orbits:

Welcome to lonely Point Nemo, Earth's dumping ground for derelict space junk.

Point Nemo, the loneliest and most remote expanse of ocean on Earth, is where spacecraft go when they die.

This spread of water, 34 times larger than France, has been used as a dumping ground for space vehicles since 1971. An estimated 263 decommissioned spacecraft, including the Russian space station Mir, have been deliberately brought down and sunk here.

Three riddles - answers further below:

You're in a mansion with a lightbulb in the attic and three switches in the basement. It's late in the evening, and you're tired, so you can only go from the basement to the attic once. How do you figure out which switch controls the lightbulb?

Two people ordered the same cocktail at a restaurant. They both drank it at different paces, but one person died while the other survived. How?

A man was pushing his car when he stopped in front of a hotel and knew immediately that he was bankrupt. How?

Puzzle answers:

Number 1: You're in a mansion with a lightbulb in the attic and three switches in the basement. It's late in the evening, and you're tired, so you can only go from the basement to the attic once. How do you figure out which switch controls the lightbulb?

Answer: Turn on the first switch and wait for 5 minutes. Then turn it off and turn on the second switch. Go to the attic. If the light is on, the second switch controls it. If the light is off, touch the bulb: if it's warm, the first switch is the correct one; if it's cold, the third switch controls the light.

Number 2: Two people ordered the same cocktail at a restaurant. They both drank it at different paces, but one person died while the other survived. How?

Answer: The cocktail contained poison in the ice. One person drank quickly before the ice melted, while the other waited, allowing the poison to spread.

Number 3: A man was pushing his car when he stopped in front of a hotel and knew immediately that he was bankrupt. How?

Answer: The man was playing Monopoly.

My youngest asked me one the other day, "What do you get when you cross a mole and a police dog?" I thought about it for a while and concluded, "A vermin shepherd." Apparently, the right answer was "a creature that wants to bring law and order to the underground." I think mine was better.

This house has a switch that I though did nothing when I moved in. As part of a sanity move I was changing all sockets and switches so they'd be the same color and I figured out why that switch was there. The original owner had family that was in the house building business. They must have had a four gang box they could have for free rather than spending some money on a three gang. So that switch is there to occupy what would have been an extra hole in the faceplate.

They should have told you. If they’re older wood windows, it’s because lazy painters love to paint them shut. (If they opened the windows just a couple inches right after they painted it wouldn’t happen)

Having always lived in older houses with wood windows, I’ve gotten pretty good at getting them to work again.

The inspection we got for this house we bought four years ago included comments about a couple of our windows. One won't stay up when we open it and I can't remember what the other issue was.

We haven't had any terribly rude surprises, but our expectations are somewhat relaxed because the house is over a century old.

Since your house is 100 years old, it’s because the cords that go to the weights in the window frame have broken. You can replace them, you just have to take the window frame apart. I was doing that once and was horrified to find that once I pulled all the trim off and could see inside the frame, there was a huge paper hornets nest there that stretched all the up both sides and across the top! Luckily it was old and dead or I woulda been arunnin!

166 On home inspections: Anyone I know who's bought a home has had nothing good to say about them. The home inspections are mandatory for a loan and most find a waste of money. They will never tear into a wall to check wiring/construction. They will hardly ever climb onto a roof. Even turning on a faucet seems to be beyond the ken of most.

I've got a feeling in the windows story above the inspector said, 'Windows? Check. Intact? Check. Next Item.'

168 We had a couple of mystery switches in our house. There's a random-looking switch on our bedroom wall. It doesn't activate any of the outlets. I texted the previous owner and learned that it controlled a yard light on that outside corner of the house. Yep.

There were other yard lights surrounding the patio that were on all of the time. I finally found a switch behind a large cupboard-type piece of furniture left by the previous owners that functioned like a pantry in the kitchen. I can barely squeeze my hand behind there to reach it.

Also, the porch light was ridiculously dim. It wasn't until after the lightswitch failed that I discovered that it had a dimmer function and was probably set at the lowest level.

It's an adventure getting to know a new house.

This spread of water has been used as a dumping ground for space vehicles since 1971. An estimated 263 decommissioned spacecraft, including the Russian space station Mir, have been deliberately brought down and sunk here.

Point Nemo, also called the Oceanic Pole of Inaccessibility, is at coordinates 48°52.6′S 123°23.6′W, according to the National Ocean Service. It's about 1,670 miles from the nearest land"

It can't be used as a de-orbit target area for spacecraft in orbits inclined less than 48 degrees, 52 minutes. All the stuff listed in the article that have been/will be dumped there were launched into approx. 51 degree orbits. That is the preferred Russian launch inclination out of Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. This is why Skylab wasn't targeted for Point Nemo - it was launched into a 28.5 degree inclination out of KSC. Target area was in a smaller dead zone in the Indian Ocean west of Australia and why some of its stuff that didn't completely burn
-up during entry impacted in Australia. Way back in 1979.

176 Since your house is 100 years old, it’s because the cords that go to the weights in the window frame have broken.

Our windows are double-pane vinyl composite frames, I'm guessing less than ten years old. We also have a new roof, new wiring, new plumbing, new central heat and air with a Nest thermostat.

180 My house is 120 years old. Everything’s been renovated most things more than once. Windows are newish. Plumbing, electric all modern. In the basement there are pipes that go nowhere and a few switches that do nothing. One of the fireplaces is sealed. What is now the kitchen used to be master bedroom and the laundry room used to be a bathroom. Crazy shit has gone on in this house over the years.

186 Anybody have any good advice about naked pictures (of a minor girl) being out on the internet, or at least being threatened to be released, as to any means to stop wider distribution?

The pictures are real and I think the scamsters may have them now instead of just an ex-boyfriend having them.

We have given her phone that has received the blackmail threats to the police, but they are not optimistic about cybercrimes breaking through to the actual sender.

Any advice from our tech experts or parents that have dealt with a similar evil situation would be appreciated.

Our first house was like that. Fortunately, the person was so bad at performing repairs that nothing major had been touched.

Not a single door in the house would latch in any room that had been re-painted in the previous 10 years. The idiot worked very hard to install hardware incorrectly.

I think it took at least a few thousand dollars off of our buying price, so I was actually pretty happy with the deal.

I can attest to the fact that early cell phone usage and social media are net negatives on children in the current day and age.

We had parental controls on our kid phones. The kids found ways from friends/internet to hack our controls off.

214 Number 2: Two people ordered the same cocktail at a restaurant. They both drank it at different paces, but one person died while the other survived. How?

Answer: The cocktail contained poison in the ice. One person drank quickly before the ice melted, while the other waited, allowing the poison to spread.

I was going to say it's because only one was poisoned, which is a possibility since it doesn't say both cocktails were poisoned, just that they ordered the same cocktail.

Glow plugs are dead. Did a circuit of the yard to put a little charge in the battery, and then used it to pull the Zip van ahead about 25 feet so I could better work on it, and mow where it had sat.

And then I decided to see if the tractor could push over trees. Had a little copse of poplar growing out of a rotten wood pile. Trees were quite dead this year, no green, no buds at all. So I put the tractor in low gear, lowered the bucket to about 6 inches, and pushed. Three or four runs at it, and the trees are all uprooted, and on the ground. Chainsaw time, now.

The relationship ended two years ago. I doubt he is involved at all (beyond being the initial leaker). They both did "young person stupid things", and he was not Dad approved as a "good guy". But I don't think he would go the blackmail route.

We have a police meeting tomorrow. I will ask if they should just give him a call and question his knowledge of distribution of the photos.

I suppose it might be something as seemingly mundane, as he deleted the photos and turned his phone in for an upgrade, and the refurbishment guys in Malaysia pulled up the photos out of deleted memory and sold them to blackmailer types?

That is why I was asking if anyone from the Horde knew of any means to restrict distribution.

The good news is that I just tried to go to pornhub and search her name, but that site is blocked in my state. My wife said we had recent legislation that blocked a lot of the porn sites, so even if the pictures do get "out there", then nobody my daughter knows will see them, I hope.

First go around all the edges, where you see old paint between window and frame, both sides, with a box cutter. Then use a thin flat putty knife in the line you made with a box cutter and go all the way in all around. Then on the outside get something you can gently pry with and work back and forth under both corners. It’s a pain but that will usually get it free.

243 Skylab, the first and only all-American space station was launched May 14,1973, exactly 52 years ago, if midnight hasn’t passed in your time zone. The Soviets had launched their Salyut space station about two years earlier. When I was in college as an undergraduate in the late 1970s, one of my professors (not physics, but engineering - learned orbital mechanics from him) had been hired by NASA to predict where Skylab was to de-orbit. There had been proposals to boost its decaying orbit, but interest in space exploration was dying fast. Skylab’s orbit eventually decayed, and it disintegrated in the atmosphere on July 11, 1979, scattering debris across the Indian Ocean and Western Australia. Not sure now if my prof had called it or not - probably, he was certainly one of the world experts on orbital mechanics. 254 Double hung wood windows.

Paint stores once sold window spades - kind of a hardened but thin, heart shaped putty blade, with a pocked-abrasive surface to break free a painted-stuck sash.

Gently tapping a stiff putty knife with a hammer around the entire exterior sash-frame may work to free the window - if everything is completely dry and not moist. If the interior sash is painted over - possibly multiple coats? It's tricky and messy and likely to end chewing up the interior finish trim work - by the tools used to free the sash.

The old window spades are pretty aggressive little monsters. And then you'll need to reglaze some of the mullions.

The SF factory is just south of the national cemetery where Adm. Nimitz is buried (flanked by Spruance, Lockwood, and Turner). Some day I'm hitting the Sees factory and finally visiting that cemetery.

263 Pillage,
Sorry about the legal issues. This is NOT a recommendation to get into the way of police but there are some Internet companies that deal with these issues and monitor when pix surface around the net. See what the police will do and then find a well regarded PI cyber service to contact. Be sure to be upfront about what outcome you desire and what your budget is.

But they can go to the isps and demand takedown of accounts with the pix, forward info to the cops, etc. And scan the web including the dark web for photos attached to her name etc. When they pop up elsewhere. Usually that part is automated.

The days of rogue district court judges hijacking executive authority may finally be numbered.

Despite the constitutional authority granted to the executive branch on immigration matters, three district judges issued sweeping nationwide injunctions halting the order.

If, like me, you're wondering who these two assholes are and what they did:

Collins was Acting Director of the National Intelligence Council, Langan was his Deputy. These two Shits were acting against the President of the United States by deliberately putting out false reports that contradicted the President's positions (namely, Venezuela). In other words, they were pulling the same shit the other "resistors" pulled in the first term.

I really do not think so.

We're still getting over how crazy the news curators were back when it was the Big Three Networks. When they'd tell us the most outlandish shit in soft, even, Tom Daschle tones.

Have you noticed some of the unhinged shit that Judy Woodruff has uttered over the years ? Do you really think Peggy Noonan was ever sober and sane at the same time ?

We're more aware of the amateur crazies now - before they move up in class and get all the political class protection. But that's better. Because cats like Saul Alinsky would at least out themselves early now.

If anything, the Internet has given everyone a platform. To show us just how crazy the under-currents have always been.
