US, China Agree to 90 Day Reduction in Tariffs

The stock markets are soaring.

U.S., China agree to 90-day tariff reduction after negotiations

The United States and China have agreed to reduce tariffs for 90 days following trade negotiations in Geneva, offering temporary relief to global markets. The deal marks a pause in the escalating economic conflict, with both countries pledging to resume talks during the truce.

Key Details:

The U.S. will lower tariffs on Chinese imports from April levels by 24 percentage points, maintaining a 10% base rate.

China will implement a matching reduction and suspend additional non-tariff measures targeting American goods.

S&P 500 futures jumped 3%, while U.S. bond yields climbed as investors reacted to signs of de-escalation.

Diving Deeper:

After weeks of mounting economic tension, the United States and China on Monday jointly announced a 90-day reduction in tariffs, signaling a temporary easing of the trade war that has unnerved businesses, investors, and policymakers across the globe.

The agreement, reached during weekend negotiations in Geneva, was confirmed by U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. "We had very robust discussions. Both sides showed great respect to what was a very positive process," Bessent said in remarks to reporters. According to Bessent, the U.S. will lower its tariffs to 30%, while China will cut its rates to 10% during this period--a proportional rollback from their respective April highs.

The White House clarified that the reduction affects tariffs announced by President Trump on April 2, cutting them by 24 percentage points while keeping the base ad valorem rate of 10%. In response, Beijing agreed not only to match the tariff rollback but also to lift administrative barriers and non-tariff measures it had imposed since April.

Both countries are expected to implement the agreed measures by Wednesday. The joint statement released following the talks indicated that discussions will continue over the coming months as the two sides explore a longer-term resolution.

Markets reacted quickly and positively. S&P 500 futures surged over 3% on the news, providing a shot of optimism after weeks of uncertainty. The U.S. Dollar Index, which had been under pressure due to investor anxiety about America's trade posture, rose more than 1%. Meanwhile, bond markets adjusted sharply, with the yield on the 10-year Treasury climbing to 4.445%, its highest point since early April.

The Dow is now up over 1000 points.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average surged 1037 points, or 2.5%, staying near its highs for most of the session with buying enthusiasm remaining strong. The S&P 500
popped nearly 3% on Monday, bringing its gain since its April intraday low at the height of tariff pessimism to more than 20%. The benchmark has cut its year-to-date losses to just 0.9%.

The Nasdaq Composite boomed by 4%, as the initial China agreement sent technology stocks tied to the country -- like Tesla and Apple -- flying higher.

The narrative is that Trump is retreating, getting nothing from China in a desperate effort to end the trade war because it's hurting America too much.

Despite...healthy consumer spending, the market recovering, and $10 trillion in announced foreign investment in America since 1/20.

Also...the tariffs will still be 55% when they were 15% when Trump entered office. The same 15% that he set in 2018 that also didn't end the world, Biden never rescinded, and that Biden actually added to (in terms of category, not general number).

I was an economics major, even then, I could see and it was known from Friedman among others that the Great Depression was largely the Federal Reserve's fault in raising interest rates and reserve requirements causing a monetary crunch post Black October in 1929. Another portion of the blame was the cessation of loans that the US made to Germany which then used those loan proceeds to pay Britain and France reparations and they used to pay us back. Self licking lollipop.

The breakdown of that transfer system had a bigger effect on the world economy than Smoot Hawley did. And the US economy was overwhelmingly domestic at the time with trade less than single digits of the US GDP. Thus, the Fed killed the US economy which then killed the international funds transfer system that then killed the world economy.

A lot of that is going to have to be applied here in the states. China is always going to have the labor cost advantage. So, the question is, how do we neutralize that advantage. The only thing I can think of is an onslaught of "employee owned companies." There would be a base salary, sure. But, the key would be increased salary based on the performance of the company. All of a sudden China's biggest advantage is toast. The by-products of an employee owned company are, also, pretty positive. All of a sudden, the manufacturing and acquisition dept. is keeping a close eye on the marketing dept. and vice versa. Self-policing on slacking workers. True innovative contribution from employees. When factory workers have skin in the game, they reach the next level of professionalism.

so all he did was raise the cost of chinese imports 10%

this is still not a win for any of us. we still are having to pay more but maybe that was the mission. forced inflation to help his corporate buddies

Pump and dump stock market for insiders...rinse and repeat. MTG plus a bunch of cabinet flunkies and donors will make a lot of money using various pump/dump and short sells every time mango Mussolini opens his mouth on tariffs

If President Trump gets just 25% of what he wants, that's STILL a Big Improvement for Us.

That's why he's shooting for the Moon. He won't get 100% for us, but he'll get 25%, or maybe half.

That's quite the contrast to the Republicans S.O.P. of asking ONLY for what they think Democrats will allow, and then settling for 10% of it.

I made some blunt (but truthful) comments and got instantly banned. Apparently it's a site ONLY for reporting active or upcoming ICE raids so people can avoid, hinder, or protest. It's great for us though, because we can see all the ICE action and arrests, and (like you said) it may spread fear among the illegal community and encourage them to self deport.

One the one hand he gets revenue and no trade war by negotiating with China and other countries for a "better deal." But the other hand is that without egregious tariffs, you're not going to get the onshoring of industries that left for slave-labor countries because it'll still be cheaper to produce there.

I don't think there's a balance point where he can get both, and the onshoring of jobs and industries would be more beneficial long term, while hurting more now.

Not that simple. The leftover women are in their late 20s and early 30s. They are shunned by the vast majority of Chinese men who are interested only in younger women, despite there being a shortage of available women. There's a good case to be made that the men are being too picky, not the women.

In any event, it's very odd that in a country where men outnumber women and are desperate to find wives, there is an entire demographic of relatively young, otherwise desirable women who are not in the dating pool. Whether they were pushed out, or they took themselves out (or combo) is mostly irrelevant because the entire situation is mystifying.

250 Not that simple. The leftover women are in their late 20s and early 30s. They are shunned by the vast majority of Chinese men who are interested only in younger women, despite there being a shortage of available women. There's a good case to be made that the men are being too picky, not the women.

The leftover women ended up that way because of high standards for husbands, pushed by societal and social media expectations. Husbands must earn X amount, have a home and car, etc. There are only a handful of men that meet those standards, and many other men have given up "lying flat and 'let it rot' movements", so many women will get to their 30s single. And, of course, theyre going to want an older, successful man.

But why would a single 35 year old guy with lots of money and status who wants to settle down and start a family pick the 32 year old woman over the 25 year old one, if he has the choice?

284 China has been doing to us what the British Empire did to China: the British smuggled opium into China to addle the population, China is smuggling fentanyl in to the US to do the sane or worse to us. We, as foreign barbarians, are a proxy for the British who humiliated Imperial China. They want revenge, and acknowledgment that they are the Middle Kingdom, the center of the world.

285 Are you saying we should return to the standard the US had in 1900?
Posted by: Hadrian the Seventh

That is actually in immigration law dating from the 50's. Sponsoring someone for immigration requires that you sign a contract agreeing to liability if that person goes onto public assistance (IIRC within 5 years or so) after immigrating.

That used to be enforced btw until we suddenly decided to open the borders to everyone.

I despise each and every one of those 'charities' whether religious or secular in nature. All they became is a facilitator for illegals and endless waves of pseudo refugees. Ignoring, by the way, the requirement that refugees go to the nearest country for refuge and also the requirement return to their home one after the danger is over.

Just like TPS has become a one way roach motel entry in the US for permanently residing here.

That's debatable. Pierre also had his entire personality based on opposing Trudeau and he was obviously flailing when Trudeau went away.

The more conspiracy minded have pointed out that Canada and Australia's election polling went in an almost perfectly identical trajectory at the same time, even though Trump was saying nothing to or about Australia. Almost as if polls were being greased to cover up a steal.

309 Just for a cost example, I sell laser cut steel umbrella stands.

I took my design to be quoted by an American factory next door to my office. Literally one block away.

They quoted me $60 / pc.

We import from China for $15 and retail for $45.

$60 is above retail.

I'd have to charge $120 retail.

So with the tariffs I found a Vietnamese factory that does it for $12

BTW, this is what is funny - the two factories in Vietnam and USA? They both use the exact same brand of machinery and are basically copies of each other.

Amada Japan and Amada USA machines.

The American factory is way overstaffed. It has an "Accounting department" with multiple comfy offices.

The Vietnamese guy? His wife in the corner of the factory.

Probably on his farmland, too. No rent.

Also funny, the workers in California? They are all older Vietnamese or Hmong people.

350 Don't blame them too much. We got to see glamorous celebrities on TV we could fantasize about, and then go off trying to live our own fantasies. They see a 32 year old twink on a youtube ad bitching about how his dick don't work and he's got the Hivv, and think "no thanks".

More importantly, we got supermodels. They get Rachel Zegler.

352 They were between 1.3 and 1.4 billion early in this century. They will be 600-650 million by 2050. There is no way to stop the swirling drain absent a collapse of the CCP. More likely, central China will coalesce into China, and the big coastal cities will become city-states.

China as we knew it is already over. It's why Xi came to the table. He had no choice. He wants to at least die in power.

China has had a repeating dynamic for most of the last two millenia; a very Strong Emperor unifies the country, kicks everybody's asses and establishes a dynasty. Then the dynasty falls apart as corruption and malfeasance takes over (sometimes slowly, sometimes quickly) Then the country splits up into factions run by warlords that prey upon each other and make life harsh for everyone. Then one becomes strong enough to make himself Emperor again. Wash, rinse, repeat.

Taurus used to be Brazilian on old S&W machines. That's why a lot of their guns looked soooo similar.

"By 1968, Taurus was exporting its revolvers to the U.S. market. In 1971, Bangor Punta Corporation, Smith & Wesson’s then-parent company, purchased majority ownership of Forjas Taurus that led to the two firearm manufacturers to shared designs and manufacturing technology. (Gun enthusiasts will remember several Taurus model revolvers that appear and function similarly to famed Smith & Wesson models.) In 1977, Forjas Taurus came under new ownership that divorced Taurus’ relationship with Smith & Wesson."

They have grown up lately. I have no issues with their Tracker (revolver) line.

I have nothing but a hunch to base this on, but it might actually be neither genetic nor environmental, but actually social.

Children grow up with zero social stressors. Bullying is forbidden except from authority figures themselves. Everyone must succeed at all costs regardless of accomplishment or effort. Nobody has to go off to work in factory after school. Does coming of age with few to no stressors in life mean you develop with less expression of certain hormones? Are other hormones affected similarly, like cortisone?

I'd like to see cross tabs from any of these studies. Do kids growing up in shitty environments have this same drop in testosterone? Is it a global phenomenon, or only in the cushier parts of the world?

Feh, any study that does get put out is bound to be fake and ghey, so whatever I guess.

That's been happening for years. China labor costs have skyrocketed and the savings for many industries aren't enough to justify dealing with with the rampant corruption and IP theft. Alternatives like Vietnam and India aren't pure either, but are somewhat better and are now cheaper to boot.
