This is after Caesar won at the Battle of Alesia. Vercingetorix had been raising a rebellion against the Romans. He had numbers and was firing granaries all along the country side. Caesar was not running supply lines, so he had to live off the land. He cornered Vercingetorix inside a walled town called Alesia. He encircled the town with a wall. Then another force of Gauls moved against Caesar's rear, so Caesar had a second wall built outside his lines and his men were between the two walls. Alesia could not get food, Caesar could not get food. And he was vastly outnumbered. Vercingetorix tried a break out and Caesar crushed it.

Vercingetorix surrendered to save his men, who were starving- and the rebellion and Gaul were now in Rome's pocket.

Posted by: Aetius451AD at May 19, 2025 09:49 AM (bss/y)

82 Vercingetorix had been raising a rebellion against the Romans. He had numbers and was firing granaries all along the country side. Caesar was not running supply lines, so he had to live off the land. He cornered Vercingetorix inside a walled town called Alesia.

The Romans had been very successful at playing the competing Gaul tribes against one another. Vercingetorix uniting them was a major accomplishment, and his scorched earth strategy was working. Julius Caesar was on the ropes, desperate for food and to bring the Gauls to battle. The other Gaul chieftains were tired of burning their own land, though, and Alesia was a capital or major city, and they rebelled and forced Vercingetorix to stand and fight (and lose).

Alesia could not get food, Caesar could not get food. And he was vastly outnumbered. Vercingetorix tried a break out and Caesar crushed it.

Knowing it was the final battle, the Gauls early on kicked the women and children out of the city into the no man's land to conserve food. The Romans didnt let them into their camp and didn't feed them either, so they starved to death, demoralizing both sides.

Yep. Caesar had his troops build a circumvallation, which is an inwards-facing line of fortification of walls, towers, and ditches, to watch the city and prevent anyone from leaving. Then a contravallation, which is an outwards-facing line of fortification. To defeat external attacks to reinforce and get supplies into the fortress, or to create an exit lane for the besieged troops and civilians.

88 So Hadrian was ghey?

He kidnapped a 12-year-old boy from the kid's family and, um, "kept him close by" for the next five years. The kid fell off/threw himself off a boat in the Nile and drowned. Hadrian built a temple on the bank of the Nile to mourn his dead sex toy, and one at his "country villa" near Tivoli.

Hadrian's successor, Antoninus, had coins with designs celebrating the family and even one with a scene from a myth about parents protecting their son from being kidnapped by a god made in the boy's home region.

Oh, and the alphabet people claim Hadrian as a "gay icon". Apparently they don't see a problem with abusing a 12-year-old.

100 This is an effective painting with its historic resonance, realistic detail and use of color. The two main figures of Vercingétorix and Caesar stand out as the only bright areas in the center of the image: White for Vercingétorix and red for Caesar. All else is shadowed in distance or obscured by the smoke of conquest. I especially like the way he captures the sheen of the metal weapons and appointments on the horse. Even the horse appears to be bowing down before Caesar.

I'm not sure what the Royer's intentions were: just showing an historic scene or to rouse French sentiment against Roman conquests of the Gauls. Considering Vercingétorix was jailed for years after this scene then executed by strangling, I always thought he should have gone down fighting, taking as many Legion forces to hell as he could. Guess I inherited certain beserker tendencies.

140 From the 'No one cares' department:

The non rivalry rivalry between Caitlyn Clark and Angel Reese continued over the weekend. Clark fouled Reese on a shot attempt which was upgraded to a Flagrant One, for some reason, after Reese bowed up to Clark, pulled the "hold me back" move as she 'attempted' to rare back and throw a punch. Matching technicals were given out after the 'scrum.'

Game ended with Clark getting a triple double with 20 pts. 10 rebounds and 10 assists, with Reese getting 12 pts. 17 rebounds (off mostly her own missed layups) and 1 assist.

Oh, and yet MORE claims of 'racism' toward Reese with 'comments from the Indiana fans' after the game.

Caesar wrote quite a lot about his campaign in Gaul (embellished to win fame back in Rome), but at least claimed to have personally fought in Alesia. The inner and outer Gaul armies attacked together at the same point, and Caesar threw on his red cloak and personally led a counter attack to shore up the area.

As for German immigrants, a large tribe of ethnic Germans (Helvetii, from Switzerland) tried to move into Gaul during the fighting and almost defeated Caesar. He also had a significant number of German tribesman and auxiliary troops.

236 I watch these clips of the WNBA, and they are all terrible basketball players. Even the "stars." There is zero sense of teamwork. It's basically a series of one-one-one match-ups where the rest of the teams are barely in the frame. I've never seen so many missed shots where the rebound is retrieved by ... the girl who missed the shot in the first place.

It's astonishing to me that anyone would watch this at all, let alone pay to see it live. There's more action at the local pick-up game.

237 Why did "they" let *biden continue on in such a diminished capacity?

*biden's crew, his family and those in his administration that were actually screwing over the country for fun and profit did not want that gravy train to stop. For one, it would have increased the possibility of exposure as to what they were all engaged in. Thus, the money would cease or at least slow to a trickle.

For two, there was an awful lot of animosity between the Harris camp and the *biden camp. Iron grip on power and all that.

Lastly, there was a stubborn asshole in the White House who'd refuse to step down no matter what. And a wife hell bent on keeping him in power. For her own personal reasons not at all to do with a greater good for the country.
