Musical Interlude Music is When the Winged Hussars Arrived by Sabaton, the story of the relief of the 1683 Ottoman siege of Vienna by the largest cavalry charge in history, led by John III Sobieski of Poland-Lithuania and the aforementioned Winged Hussars. Video is from Babylon 5, featuring the lifting of the blockade of Centauri Prime by the new White Star fleet. Well, I think so; it's been a long time since I watched it so I may have the details a bit muddled. Disclaimer: I'm flying a White Star now. Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

You're the investor. That's how Big Science works. Tax dollars are poured down never-ending holes because we're only 20 years away from unicorn farts and then, if a miracle happens and they actually produce something, everyone involved - not you - gets rich. From the Betanews article: "According to its newly updated user agreement, Nintendo has granted itself the right to make your Switch 2 “permanently unusable” if you break certain rules. Yes, the company might literally brick your device."
Informed customers are going to have a "Hard no!" reaction to the device. Nintendo will run afoul of laws in various regions that make it illegal to destroy the utility of a purchased device after the sale. I'm pretty sure the EU will be front of the line on this one. Some clever evil soul will disassemble the necessary code in the Switch 2 to figure out how to destroy the devices, and will then unleash an attack over the net to do a mass bricking. How Nintendo can not see these outcomes ahead of time... Are they crazy? Is that their problem? Posted by: Grumpy and Recalcitrant at May 12, 2025 04:59 AM (O7YUW) 12

My new keyboard ought to arrive from Bezos's little hobby site today. "Ought to," I say, since it's coming by USPS. Margo is slowly inching up to 7.8 pounds, and her Norwegian Forest Cat fur continues to get longer and fuller. And her brother, Frog is now 12.8 pounds and still growing. And Norwegians can take over two years to fully mature. So even though we are sure he is a mix, he is gonna be a large kitty. ""Who was sleeping with whom"
LOL." Couple of dynamics going on with the litter. Bandit, the mother is a short hair tuxedo. There is a photo of her on the front porch right after the night of mad passionate dating took place. And with her is a beautiful male Norwegian Forest Cat, and a traditional male domestic short hair. Both holding flowers and chocolates (NOT!). One oddity of cats is the ability of the female to be impregnated by more than one male during a dating session. So out of the four kittens, Frog is a tuxedo, massive and bushy tailed with long body hair. Margo is blossoming into a full Norwegian by appearance. Her sister, Marilyn has tha exact same markings, but the hair length is much shorter. And the other brother, Bennie is short haired, black and sleek, with no sign of a tendency for long hair. So a short hair/short hair mating will get short haired kittens. And short hair/long hair mating will get short hair kittens as the long hair trait is recessive. BUT...if the short hair father or mother is the result of a prior short hair/long hair mating of that cat's parents, then the long hair trait will emerge in the kittens. I’m ready to see the details of the trade deal with China that Bessent negotiated in Switzerland over the weekend.
It can’t be too complicated if they put this thing together over a few weeks (there have been sightings of Chinese negotiators going to the Treasury a week or so ago). If it’s anything close to what Trump got of the Chinese in the deal during his first term, then there are going to be a lot of happy farmers especially for soybeans. And Nvidia’s stock is probably going to skyrocket because I’m thinking the deal will allow the Chinese to buy their high-end, non-gimped, AI chips again. That’s been in the rumors as well. We also know the tariffs will still be at a 10% floor, so that might be higher for China. Posted by: SpeakingOf at May 12, 2025 06:36 AM (6ydKt) 64

A crucial feature of Theranos 1.0 was the ability of E. Holmes to sexually entrance a gaggle of prominent and famous older males, whose association with the brand lent credibility to her phony baloney company The board of directors featured people like Henry Kissinger, Sam Nunn, William Perry, James Mattis and George Shultz. So even though we are sure he is a mix, he is gonna be a large kitty.
DNA results should be back by the end of next week, so we should have a better idea of who was sleeping with who in his pedigree. Posted by: Village Idiot's Apprentice at May 12, 2025 *** His Lordship Arizona, the big red tabby, had a lot of Maine Coon traits. But he was an SPCA special, said to have been found as a stray somewhere in town. The unlikelihood that a Maine Coon cat might have been prowling for females, or a girl cat looking for some fun, in 1983 -- when there was only one MC breeder here, and that way over on the north shore of the lake -- pretty much rules out him being even a part-MC. On the other hand, we keep seeing long-furred ferals running around here . . . and my big black Wolf, before I took him in and altered him, used to roam here when his so-called people let him out. We wonder to this day how much of his DNA he spread around. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at May 12, 2025 07:05 AM (omVj0) 98
The only thing that is important from a Chinese trade deal is, does it incentivize the movement of manufacturing and production back to the US, if it doesn’t, then it’s a failure.
We don’t want better terms with the Chinese, we want them dead, economically speaking of course. Posted by: Thomas Bender at May 12, 2025 06:43 AM (XV/Pl) — Yes, but I’m not sure if the big corps, like Amazon or Walmart, agree. They’ve got a lot of leverage, and I’m sure they’re telling Trump’s people about the horror stories to come if they can’t get cheap products from China, ASAP. I think if the tariffs were 25% to 35% on most stuff coming in from China that would level things out. The problem with a lot of these cheap manufactured goods is they can be made just as easily and cheaper in India, Vietnam, Malaysia, or Thailand. So a lot of companies will just move there. I don’t mind the cheap plastic trinkets and gadgets being made outside the U.S., but higher end stuff; computer chips, smartphones, laptops, vehicles & EVs, appliances, tools, etc. I wish could still mostly be made here. To get that totally done means ending “Assembled in Mexico” which is another problem we’ll have to face. Posted by: 13times at May 12, 2025 07:03 AM (jaEwf) — I haven’t seen a closeup yet. It makes sense, as I assume there was coffee around, but then why hide the Stevia in your jacket pocket instead of throwing it in the trashcan? Maybe it’s a French thing to be so embarrassed by trash lying on the table? Posted by: SpeakingOf at May 12, 2025 07:14 AM (6ydKt) 102

Like a lot of issues, the Clintons are the demarcation. Whether someone had used The Marijuana as a youth was a legitimate career ender. Naturally this was previously used as a cudgel or applied selectively. On the other hand, it became a non-issue over time.
Americans eventually became aware of the game being played. “It’s OK when we do it, though not when they do it” just causes everyone to tune out. We saw this when the usual suspects became absolutely incensed that “Evangelicals” we Voting For Trump. Not Acceptable, we were told. Posted by: Common Tater at May 12, 2025 07:17 AM (bocsn) 104

I posted the link to the xtwitter coke video. The xtwitter thread shows images of a coke tool kit and a closeup of the coke baggy etc.
On that same thread a commenter linked an old 80's video of Macron dancing in a disco with a bunch of euromen. Very Polk-Castro Street. I've no idea if it's legit. On second thought it's legit. Posted by: 13times at May 12, 2025 07:27 AM (jaEwf) 106

"Tribalism was a premodern obstacle to civilization. It remains so in many parts of the Middle East, where it is routine to hire, promote, retain, and reward on the basis of kinship and bloodlines."
That was the first thing the Army brass told me when I arrived in Iraq to "nation build". We were to give out billions of dollars in equipment, medical supplies and weapons, We were not to inventory it or interfere with what the Iraqi Army did with it. They called it "culturally obligated nepotism". We called it: THE BIG CON Posted by: I M Simpleton at May 12, 2025 07:57 AM (KPAbF) 108

Like I've commented before - I use Copilot to code Databricks Python code. Singular functions that can easily be unit tested. It's been a game changer for me and my development time. No longer do I need to sift through voluminous API/SDK documentation that is seemingly always out of date.
