Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Mid-Morning Art Thread![]() The Laundress Honoré Daumier From the museum's website: This painting depicts a subject visible from Daumier's studio on the quai d'Anjou in Paris: laundresses returning from laundry boats moored on the Seine. Despite the weight of her bulky load, the woman tenderly extends her hand to help a child up the steps of the embankment. With her sturdy form silhouetted against a bright background, the humble worker acquires a certain monumentality. This picture is the largest and possibly the last of three painted versions of the composition; Daumier's pigments have deteriorated, obscuring the last digit of the date inscribed at the lower left, but in 1893 it was recorded as 1863.It can be frustrating to see a faded painting that must have been radically different when it was completed, and this is a fine example of that! On the other hand, I am not sure I want my laundry done in the water of the Seine! Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

End of the work day for woman and child. Woman washing clothes, child playing with water and dirt. Woman has to be tired but will extend hand to child who is climbing stairs that are very steep for them. Woman is slightly bent forward to help child. Child is also bent forward to manage the steepness of the stairs. Depicts connections between work and play, adult and child. I like the compassion demonstrated by the woman.

The picture got to me to thinking. When I got up this morning, the wife told me a tree had fallen across the driveway, and she couldn't leave to go to the doctor. I dutifully put on my rain jacket (it's been raining since last night), got my buck saw, and dealt with the problem. It was more like a very large branch than a tree, but still.
I don't resent having to do it, because she does her share of the work around here and then some, but it started me thinking about all those brainwashed cretins who claim to need no man. What exactly would their strategy have been? Of course, we all know it would have been to call someone, almost certainly male, to deal with it. By the time that happened, though, they'd have missed their appointment, and been out a considerable sum of money. I don't hate these girls; they're mostly just young, ignorant, and parroting what the culture has taught them. But they would do well to consider my example before they start in with their independent, stronk nonsense again. Posted by: Archimedes at May 13, 2025 10:04 AM (s8j++) 74

Carry over from last thread about own goals.
Red Wings' Paul Coffey's own goal in his "hat trick" game against the Avs: https://tinyurl.com/3nn89kjc Dumbass. No need for him to be at that spot, let alone with his stick on the ice. His responsibility in that scenario is to body-up the trailing Avs player who had actually stopped skating. And to whomever asked the question in the last thread, Stephane Yelle, the Avs player who put the puck in front of the net before Coffey slapped it in, was credited with the goal. — Haha. Funny you bring this up. My yard has a couple of awesome maple trees. Both 100+ years old. Provide great shade in the summer. But every 2-3 of years they need to be trimmed up, otherwise they block light from coming into the house. Last time I had this done it cost $700. I was like fuck me $700 to trim some trees? But yeah that’s the going rate. This year it’s $800. Which sounds insane right? The dude is here for a couple of hours. But I don’t have a chainsaw. I could go rent one I suppose. And one of those extender things. And then hope the branches don’t fall on my head, lol. I don’t have a way to dispose of the branches. I could go rent a trailer and a truck. And then go to the dump. It would be less than $800, Maybe $400 including the dump fees. And a giant pain in the ass and potentially dangerous. Sometimes it’s easier to just “call the guy”. Month after month, the government bean-counters at the Bureau of Labor Shitistics under former-president Biden published overly optimistic estimates for everything from job growth to the size of the economy, only to have those numbers routinely—and quietly—revised down later…
Instead of adding almost 800,000 jobs during the middle of last year, the economy likely shed more than 160,000 of them. The next annual benchmark will probably be a (retroactive) reduction of jobs under Biden that exceeds this year’s large downward revision. Posted by: SMOD at May 13, 2025 10:25 AM (RHGPo) 140

Climbing arborists are expensive, but holy camoly i get why. In to of all the insurance they have to carry, the gear alone would make golfers blush at the price tag. And the stuff can only be used a certain number of climbs before it needs to be replaced.

My wife is actually pretty cool about spiders and other bugs. She tries to get them to crawl on a piece of paper, and then takes the paper outside and brushes the critter off into the grass or dirt.

In 1974 the Venice canals had lots of unmentionable flotsam. Yuck. I was shocked last summer to see clear water and a small school of mullet swimming on some submerged steps. With video to prove it. And no odor at all .
