Mornin' Pixy, and the rest of you early mornin' risers.
"Unfortunately it runs a custom AI-focused Linux distribution and must be cleansed from the Earth with fire. That about sums it up, yup. A NAS is supposed to accurately store and retrieve files, serving them up to network users. It is not supposed to have fever dreams about what the files should be, or what might be in those files, which is all I can figure an "AI" would do to the process. Lots and lots of fire, and then an open source NAS solution. (I'm not up to speed on the available offerings so I'm not going to suggest a specific one.) Good morning, good people from Waterworld, AKA the Adirondacks. We've gotten so much rain the lawns are beginning to be overgrown and look pretty poor.
Still, it's a genuine pleasure to live here in the most exceptional country on the planet regardless of the current upsettlement. November 5th went a long way toward alleviating that issue, even though it only was the end of the beginning. There's a long hard road to be traveled yet. But because we are Americans, thus denied the option of failure we'll prevail as we always do. I have total confidence in this. So then may all effort by you result in maximum benefit to you and corresponding heartburn for the leftwit fungi who torment us. Posted by: IRONGRAMPA at May 09, 2025 04:59 AM (hKoQL) 21

Evening and morning to all the insomaniacals! 'Tis Friday, the consummation devoutly to be wished!
I dreamed I was in New York City for some reason, and lost my phone while in some transportation hub, maybe Grand Central or Penn Station. It seemed weirdly empty rather than the teeming place I saw when I was there. Maybe it was at three am. At one point I picked up some kind of antenna -- it apparently was an intercom feed -- to a cafe, and heard in a guttural Brooklyn accent, "Sam's Place," and a shrill female voice in the background snapped, "It's none a ya business!" Thus did I know I was in New York. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at May 09, 2025 05:15 AM (omVj0) Posted by: Village Idiot's Apprentice at May 09, 2025 05:16 AM (a1415) 31

My new Dell Desktop fell over dead last evening. It would power on but never post to the Windows login screen. Stuff happens.
I prepared for the anticipated hours long tech support call by getting up to speed with what Dell wants you to try. Fair enough. None of them worked. I opened a service request, gave them my machine tag number, recapped the symptoms, and submitted it. At this point I got the phone numbers to get things rolling. Fair enough. I called the number at 10 PM MDT expecting a message about their hours. Instead I got a live person. WTH? This does not happen. After about 20 minutes of him making sure I did all the diagnostics and few more try this, then that, he goes were going to this fix machine. He gave me two choices: go to the service center which is a 450 mile round trip x 2, or he would send me a box to send the machine into for some healing. I opted for the box. Total time for this is about a week. The real point here is they have some awesome tech support. It really makes this PITA situation quite easy to deal with and for that I am quite grateful. I could be looking at owning a boat anchor. That is my tech story for the day. Posted by: Altaria Pilgram - My President has convictions at May 09, 2025 05:21 AM (amnH6) 37

Posted by: Skip at May 09, 2025 *** Easy to forget. Back when I had my '84 Ford Escort, a four-door, I would occasionally neglect to wind up the rear windows when I parked. The fabric seat in the back would get wet in the rain. The problem was solved when I traded the little go-kart in on an Oldsmobile Cutlass coupe with only two windows to roll up and down. Since then I've had power windows in all my cars, and it's been easy to run them up when I leave the car. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at May 09, 2025 05:24 AM (omVj0) 41

If the floor has any carpeting/fabric (it probably does unless you went full "farm truck" when ordering) it probably got wet too. Don't make the mistake a lot of people do of putting the windows up and not letting it air-dry out fully before closing them. Mold in the carpets is something you do not want under any circumstances. - Which I think will be not the downfall but a major stumbling block. They're giving the game away too easily, Brave especially. Here are the search results, and here is an AI generated summary of a half dozen or so sites listed below. Here are the links if you want to read for yourself what this natural language search engine just scraped. They're taking all of the mystery out of it and people, even non-tech people, can easily see that it's not really accomplishing anything beyond just being a search engine. Personally, I would have liked one of the African Cardinals to be chosen given their unapologetically old school stance on issues but such is life.
The amusing thing are the liberal types crowing about how this American Pope is going to stand up to Trump! (Learned a new one from them. "Orange Idi Amin." It's so cute when they are being edgy.). The new pope has ties to Noo Awlins. HIs grandparents were Creoles whose home was displaced when the elevated I-10's S. Claiborne section was built in the early '60s. Of course they were long gone by then, having already relocated to Chicago.
"The 1910 census data shows that the family's last known New Orleans address was South Peters in the French Quarter. You know that when some big-city mayor is talking about global warming or, back in the day, nuclear disarmament, their cities are riddled with crime, there are potholes in the streets, the garbage isn't being picked up and rats are everywhere. Leo XIV would be better employed telling the faithful to go to Confession. Posted by: Hadrian the Seventh at May 09, 2025 06:36 AM (QnmlO) 93
Daniel Greenfield- who I don't think is RC, but Jewish -and who writes for "FrontPage" seems to feel that the only reason to pick an American ( although isn't the Pope a citizen of Peru for a number of years?) for Pope is to fight Trump. I don't see why that would make a difference . Trump isn't a RC and isn't an "unruly" Bishop the new Pope can remove from his post. Closed borders and protection of Americans are a national concern, not a religious one , so the new Pope can say whatever he likes about American policies. I don't think Trump is going to say, "Yes, I'll. Do whatever you like, your excellency."

Pro Tip:
When building out a large scale ERP, design the database first. Also my new favorite tool is an online app called Eraser. And contrary to it's name, you can use it to create relation diagrams, workflow diagrams, entity diagrams, etc. Either by manually building them or using text prompts. I'm using it to design the workflow and database for my ERP App. The number of tools out there to build applications is staggering, which begs the question, if there are so many tools to help people build applications, why does everything suck? Don't mind the discussions on Pope Leo, what I do mind is the bashing of Catholicism. So his prayer mentioned Mary which becomes he isn't really a Christian because God & Jesus should have come first. Give it a rest, we venerate God & Jesus and also pray to Mary the mother of Jesus. The comment sections of some of the Salem sites are getting as bad as zero hedge. At least here it's respectful.

My thought on it above is that it will likely cause problems in the future because they're exposing basically all it is way too early. The mystery is gone when you present it as the modern version of MetaCrawler. Just slap the results out there and don't give the links and references. If people want that let them look. - For the record I fully support this TikTok trend. So much of modern school is done on Google Chromebooks with Google accounts that are tracked at school and associated with the home IP when they log in. Kids are tracked and profiled from an early age. If these kids help reduce that by even 10% (much less forcing a return to paper, which will never happen because teachers love the massive reduction in having to do much of anything), it will be a very good thing. This is the example shown to me that showed me how... not useless, but let's say completely untrustworthy it is.
Ask it to make a list of 100 actors or actresses (you need to be specific to male or female because "actor" is absurdly used for both these days) from the 1950s. Scroll down the list and see how many modern names are there. And this is simple information that could easily be scraped from IMDB or the like just from movie dates. I had a coworker use copilot the other day to sort some data from spreadsheets, to break out five numerically equal sets of customers from one or more ZIP codes, with the constraint that, regardless of how many zips were in each set, every customer in a given zip must be used if the zip is included in the set. So - boring and time consuming, but not complicated or particularly difficult. I told her "don't bother. Do it manually. Copilot will get it wrong, you'll just waste time you could be using to do it manually." She emailed me yesterday, I was right, Copilot completely screwed everything up and she had to start over.
