Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | THE MORNING RANT: As Tesla Sales Decline, Ford’s EV Sales…Fall Off a Cliff![]() Despite higher sales of internal combustion (ICE) and hybrid vehicles, Ford sold significantly fewer electric vehicles last month. Ford sold 4,859 fully electric vehicles in April, which is nearly 40% less than the 8,019 sold in April 2024.“Despite?” Is that the correct word to use here? It reminds me of the infamous Fox Butterfield stories from the NY Times, which had comically obtuse headlines along the lines of, “Despite record incarceration, crime rates are down.” Anyhow, “despite” people buying more gasoline powered (“ICE” ![]() All three of Ford’s electric vehicles —the F-150 Lightning, Mustang Mach-E, and E-Transit —had double-digit sales declines last month. Ford sold 2,927 Mach-Es (-40%), 1,740 F-150 Lightnings (-17%), and just 192 E-Transit vans in April (-81%).Ford’s 4,859 EV sales amounted to just 2.3% of the company’s total sales in April. Yet CEO Jim Farley and nepot destructor Bill Ford remain committed to perpetuating the failed Model E-dsel efforts, despite multi-billion dollar EV losses continuing, with no end in sight. Aside from its existing – and underutilized - EV manufacturing plants, Ford built a massive new plant (“Blue Oval City” ![]() Meanwhile, Ford’s Q1 2025 profit also plunged, as the ongoing EV losses continue to soak up a majority of the company’s ICE profits. “Ford’s First-Quarter Profit Drops 64%; Suspends Outlook” [WSJ – 5.05.2025]Production halts and an unprofitable EV business nearly wiped out Ford Motor’s net profit in the first quarter, the company said Monday. Ford reported net income of $471 million, down from $1.3 billion a year earlier. Revenue fell to $40.7 billion, down from $42.8 billion in the first quarter of 2024.Ford would have made $1.3 billion in Q1 2025 had its disastrous EV division not racked up another $849 million loss, pulling quarterly profit down to $471 million. Ford has been losing about $5 billion per year on its EV operations, and there is no realistic possibility for this division to become profitable, especially with the Trump administration working to eliminate the EV tax rebates that have been part of Ford’s EV business plan. In February of this year, Ford was projecting that its EV business would lose another $5.5 billion in 2025. As noted in the headline of that Wall Street Journal story above, Ford is now having to suspend its previous 2025 outlook because things are getting worse. CEO Jim Farley actually had the audacity to start blaming Donald Trump for Ford’s woes: “Ford pulls guidance, warns it will take $1.5 billion hit from Trump's tariffs” [Reuters – 5/05/2025] This is the same Jim Farley who flushed away $9.8 billion from EV losses in 2023 and 2024 alone, and who is about to take another $5.5 billion hit (likely more) on EVs in 2025. I have never heard Farley criticize any of the globalist, eco-communists he and Bill Ford decided to obey when they set Ford off down the road of electric destruction, yet he’s whimpering about Trump. If/when Ford decides to staunch the EV bleeding and throw in the towel on its Model E-dsel, then I’ll be willing to listen to concerns about the (much smaller) impact of tariffs. Even Tesla’s sales woes aren’t steering any EV customers to Ford. Something that cannot go on forever will eventually stop. The longer it takes Ford to finally terminate its EV misadventure, the more likely it is that electric vehicles will bankrupt the company. Its Board of Directors has got to take action to stop the bleeding since Jim Farley and Bill Ford clearly won’t. If Ford’s Directors will not stop the EV bleeding, shareholders will have a legitimate reason to consider bringing a shareholder derivative lawsuit against Ford’s directors and executives for their fiduciary negligence. On whosever behalf Jim Farley and Bill Ford are working for, it is not Ford’s shareholders, employees, customers, or dealers. Aside from its existing – and underutilized - EV manufacturing plants, Ford built a massive new plant; “Blue Oval City” near Memphis to assemble 500,000 electric pickup trucks per year.
-------- Don't forget the sister EV complex near Glendale, KY. It is still being built with one of the two facilities actually churning out EV batteries under an existing contract... that's supposed to be fulfilled sometime soon. Then, the complex is going to be re-tooled to manufacture the ICE F-150 trucks. The current assembly plant in Louisville is on property Ford has been leasing from, I think, UPS. Whereas they own the property in Glendale. Massive outlay of monies from Ford when they can least afford it. Posted by: Martini Farmer at May 09, 2025 11:09 AM (Q4IgG) 23

I thought Musk should have sold his majority interest 2 years ago when they went after him for his compensation package. As a guy who does have a pretty good view of the future he should have seen that EV sales wouldn't be sustainable without doubling or tripling our power grid which means a 100 more nuclear plants. He could have used that money to focus on his other businesses.

"The Plan™" under *biden was twofold...
1. Get gas prices high enough that it hurt the public and the economy. 2. "Nudge" (force) people into the only available, and affordable option... EV's. Manufacturers went along with this, willingly or not. As it was the only way they'd stay in business. Some went "all in" and others hedged. I'd wager that Ford was one that went "all in" and is now paying the price... literally. The reasoning behind the government's push to EV's has been discussed at length, but I contend it was to control the public's ability to freely move about. Seeing as how a mobile society is difficult to subjugate. Posted by: Martini Farmer at May 09, 2025 11:17 AM (Q4IgG) 48

Part of the gag was that it was slow and she had to haul around this super long power cord. Posted by: mishdog at May 09, 2025 11:23 AM (hVVER) 71

Meanwhile, Toyota for the most part looked at all this shit and said 'lets make more hybrids.' And it seems to have been the way to go.
Posted by: Aetius451AD My opinion... That's where the bet should be. Toyota leading the way. Hybrids are popular and also solid engineering. They've had plenty of time to work out any bugs and improve everything to the nth degree. EV are only viable in certain climate conditions, and are not practical for long trips or long term. Hybrid is tried, tested, functional, practical, and popular. And they don't tend to do that random incineration thing. Posted by: Madame Mayhem (uppity wench) at May 09, 2025 11:23 AM (2J/Lj) 75
for a decade now I always point out that they skipped a step with the push to replace ICE vehicles.
As with the radical Left they want what they want and they want it now. If they would have pushed for Hybrid vehicles first as they have for EV's, pure ICE vehicles would have been on their way out by now (with a few exceptions) Posted by: Sebastian Melmoth at May 09, 2025 11:23 AM (VofaG) 76

According to the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA), Tesla sold 58,459 vehicles last month (including exports), down 5.96% year-over-year and 25.84% from March’s 78,828 units. From January to April, Tesla China's total sales fell 18.31% year-over-year to 231,213 units....
....Tesla is also facing a sharp downturn in Europe, with April 2025 sales collapsing across nearly all major markets. Once a regional EV leader, the company is now seeing year-over-year declines of over 50% in France, the Netherlands, Sweden, Denmark, and the UK. In Germany—Europe’s largest car market—Tesla’s sales fell 46% despite a surge in overall EV adoption, ARS Technica wrote. The report says that even in the UK, where battery electric vehicle (BEV) registrations rose 8.1%, Tesla’s sales plummeted 62%, registering only 512 vehicles out of more than 24,000 BEVs sold. As I suspected. It's not low tier, borderline retarded liberals that are responsible for Tesla's sales drop. It isnt just the denigration of hybrids; its the push for EV as Best For Everything. There are use cases for electric vehicles that do not require such dangerous storage density as is required for long-range vehicles. I also blame government funding. There is a lot of money being spent on battery research, and all of it is going toward technology that is completely unsuitable for vehicles. The idea that the same power storage tech will be best for pocket devices, long-range motor vehicles, and grid-level power storage is insane. Posted by: Aetius451AD ========== Toyota's boondoggle was pursuing hydrogen powered cars and so I think to some extent they had already had their green fatigue moment when EVs became the latest 'hot' thing. Almost everything in life involves tradeoffs and that is where the public is usually ignorant at first of them and politicians exploit that ignorance to claim you can get something for nothing with no tradeoffs. The problem for EV fans is that companies makign them burned the public badly with crappy products, vaporware, inadequate facilities, expensive repairs, and the tendency to go carbque unexpectedly. Public, by and large, now is aware of the tradeoffs of EVs to IC engines and trying to fool or bully them into accepting them is a fool's mission. There is no pot of gold at the end of the rainbow--only the hard work of rebuilding trust, infrastructure, etc. without gubmint grifting. Tesla might make a go of it but the grifters like Jim Farley and Ford won't. Posted by: whig at May 09, 2025 11:30 AM (ctrM5) 118

It was a nascent fascist deal where Deep State government officials, together with Dem-afilliated labor unions conspired with the auto manufacturers to override customer's (mostly US citizens) vehicle preferences. Donald Trump squashed that rip-off like a bug. Ending the anti-ICE (internal combustion engine) scheme played an important, but underreported part in his 2024 presidential campaign. A lot of 'suvs' seem to fill the niche people want of having station wagons without being a station wagon.
Station Wagons are a casualty of CAFE like minitrucks. They got too bad gas mileage and that brought down the entire car line's average. Lift CAFE standards and suddenly these old classics people love become feasible again. _ That's the hilarious part. The federal government created SUVs by CAFE standards killing off station wagons. Then, during Obama, they made SUVs and trucks absolutely huge by not understanding what they were doing with the "footprint" MPG model. There are interviews with Obama's minions where they openly admit not knowing what they were doing and making vehicles larger and less efficient overall, too. You gotta think that at some point the shareholders are gonna wake up and say "Hey, you know what, maybe we shouldn't be pissing away billions of dollars every year on shit nobody wants..."
Now that the federal teat is drying up for asinine leftist projects like this, I suspect that will begin to happen. This stuff was all subsidized and could survive on tax dollars, but when that goes away? Its why companies like Master Card have stopped backing queer events and parades, because the business benefits are ending. They all knew this stuff enrages their customers to please 5% of the population, but it got them access to low interest loans and grants from the fed and from fed-adjacent organizations. So it was worth it to them. When that dries up, its not any longer. Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at May 09, 2025 11:48 AM (2VST1) 212

Why no ICE sedans are being made by US companies, or at least EVs are being pushed so hard:
From the Federal Register - incomplete The final rule establishes standards that would require an industry-wide fleet average of approximately 50.4 miles per gallon (mpg) in MY 2031 for passenger cars and light trucks, and an industry fleet-wide average for HDPUVs of roughly 2.851 gallons per 100 miles in MY 2035. The final CAFE standards increase at a rate of 2 percent per year for passenger cars in MYs 2027-31 and 2 percent per year for light trucks in model years 2029-31. The final HDPUV fuel efficiency standards increase at a rate of 10 percent per year in MYs 2030-2032 and 8 percent per year in MYs 2033-2035. under this penalty for non-compliance: the current civil penalty rate applicable to 49 U.S.C. 32912(b) of $5.50 per tenth of a mile per gallon for automobile manufacturers that do not meet applicable CAFE standards and are unable to offset such a deficit with compliance credits Posted by: Kindltot at May 09, 2025 11:49 AM (D7oie) 217

My AWD Kia Sportage is more or less a station wagon on steroids. I like the vehicle. I wouldn't mind having a sedan though. Or a sportier car. I can't have one unless I move my driveway. It has tall bank on one side and in a sedan, can't see over or around it we literally would have to get the entire front end out on the road to see if any vehicles were coming...... up the road. Hubbymayhem had a rental car and was nearly clobbered when a UPS truck came flying by. If there had been anyone coming over the hill from the other direction, someone would have been injured. SUV sit higher so we can see a little farther out from the driveway.

If any hate exists it's for the government mandates requiring the selling and purchasing of EVs. CARB and the states that signed onto CARB agreements and what not. But people can buy a Tesla the same way they can buy a truck. You know, it would be interesting to know how many EV owners criticize truck owners for never towing anything... I think they are overrated, but not particularly hated. Most of the EV attacks here aren't based on spite toward the technology but toward the attitudes and hype and government waste. Its people pushing this crap with lies and stupidity that annoy us, not the EV its self. Yeah they have their problems but its your money. We all buy stuff that others might not consider wise. But the huge money from the feds being shoveled into the maw of the EV furnace and the laws and policies to promote this technology (especially at the expense of other possibilities), that's frustrating and annoying. I hate them and all EVs because the ultimate goal is to force me to have one or worse to force me onto public transportation. The basic style of governance in America is: all that is not forbidden is compulsory. Lot of mergers, buyouts , risking his fortune to date at the time to start Space X ( which was prior to Tesla), etc. Posted by: Sebastian Melmoth at May 09, 2025 12:13 PM (VofaG) 347

Tesla Model Y : 1.2 million
Best selling SUV: Toyota RAV4 1.02 million Best selling pickup: Ford F-Series 903k Posted by: krennik - Wait, did you move the goalposts to worldwide? Why would we care or discuss what communist China or socialist Euro countries are requiring their subjects to purchase? Posted by: Boron Cobbie = No moving of goalposts. All of the above data is world-wide. You may not care about worldwide, but it is relevant to discussion. I asked Grok: what is the best selling car of any type in the world. ans: Tesla Model Y what is the best selling car of any type in China. ans: Tesla Model Y (by a very tiny margin) what is the best selling car of any type in the United States ans: Toyota RAV4 My original point is that the media reporting of Tesla 's troubles are overwrought and wishful thinking. Group of black militants decide to confront white families at a playground, screaming epithets.

what Belichick is doing is undignified. He was (and is) the GOAT coach, yet now even longtime players are looking at him saying WTF?!
Are any of those players 72 years old, single, and wealthy? Posted by: t-bird at May 09, 2025 12:15 PM (n9MHj) 351
Yeah, but this would be different. This wouldn't take an existing car and work on it. This would be building from the ground up previous models brand new, customized for modern features, so you get the body, but purpose-built for modern tech. 6 figures, minimum but works of art.
Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at May 09, 2025 12:11 PM (2VST1) There are restomods built exactly like that. All new parts, body panels included. $$$$ Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at May 09, 2025 12:15 PM (WUoYt) 352

To be fair, there was the whole 1973 Arab-Israeli war and subsequent Arab oil embargo.
It wasn't all Bretton Woods. Posted by: whig at May 09, 2025 12:02 PM (ctrM5) There is a theory that wars become inevitable when the international clearing of debt becomes threatened, it is one of those ultimate moves of trying to defer or default on payments. As a theory it is distrusted and the argument against it is that correlation is not causation, but there is some correlation. 1973 was a very strange year, it is almost one of those years where everything changed. I was seven and only noticed the gas lines and the fact that Mom was pissed because she couldn't get canning lids. Posted by: Kindltot at May 09, 2025 12:16 PM (D7oie) 354

Whoever politically biased posts on cars go up I always think back to all those doom forecasters who believed that when Obama loaned GM 38 billion and saved it, how do many Obama haters immediately had to begin screaming theat it was wasted money that GM would never pay it back Anyone else recall that ? When I go out to my dad's place in Western NC every third car is a Subaru. And there aren't that many lesbians there, except in Asheville. Posted by: The Osprey at May 09, 2025 01:22 PM (QAykW) 361
Maybe there's just a ceiling for EV sales, especially now that mandates are being rescinded.
