Morning, 'rons and 'ronettes. 56 mild degrees here at Stately Poppins Manor, with rain (yet again) on its way.
I saw the sad news about Jim SND. I never really had the chance to 'talk' with him, but I always enjoyed reading his comments over the years. I pray for him and hope he is now past all pain and unhappiness. Regarding a couple of things on the ONT - I was hoping to get back to Gettysburg this year, but I doubt I'll be able to take a vacation. I would like to go to either Texas or Virginia for a MoMe, but I probably won't do either - not because of money, but because of my own mental hangups. Fave bars? I'm giving a vote for the bar at the Farnsworth House in Gettysburg. It was "headquarters" for both the Union and Confederate sides during the making of the movie, and has a wall lined with costumes and props. Not a great bar, per se, but one good for people-watching. The worst part might be where we're supposed to pretend Darwin didn't blow the hypothesis to smithereens by determining that yes, the same completely normal, recognizable, already-named creatures that exist everywhere else on the planet ALSO exist on the Galapagos Islands. Do you often find yourself upgrading a CPU for a machine you've already purchased or built? Posted by: Grumpy and Recalcitrant I have kept a comprehensive inventory of everything I own and have owned for a very long time now and because of that I'm able to understand with certainty what I buy and how long I keep I keep possession of items. Once upon a time I was upgrading and flipping machines all the time as I enjoyed owning the latest and greatest. That changed. In desktops I've owned two since 2012 with a new one arriving today that happens to have that 256 chip in it. This works for me because I use my machines for daily use and Photoshop - that is a very set usage pattern that has a fairly defined hardware profile. For me having a network drive is as important as having a desktop computer. In other words, my desktops are a computing appliance that I rarely crack open to fuss around with. Laptops said the other had are a whole different story of crazy. Posted by: Alteria Pilgram - My President has convictions. at May 07, 2025 05:41 AM (amnH6) 46

Q for Pixy or other tech people: The compact keyboard that came with the 2013-ish iMac is fine (though two keys are coming loose!). But I'd like a full-sized Apple-compatible keyboard, preferably wireless. There's a decent-looking one on Amazon by Chesona (? Chinese brand) for $39, and also Logitech ones for $100. Are the Logitech ones worth that much more? That is, are they sturdier and last longer? Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at May 07, 2025 05:55 AM (omVj0) 50

@45/Alteria Pilgram: "In other words, my desktops are a computing appliance that I rarely crack open to fuss around with. "
Yup, that's where I'm at. My desktop case gets cracked open to: 1) Clean the dust out 2) Replace cooling fans 3) Take the CPU cooler off and replace the heat transfer paste between the cooler and the CPU chip. 4) Replace a video card once it pops (and they do eventually.) I can't remember ever upgrading a CPU chip in place on an existing motherboard. If I'm buying a CPU, it's usually as part of the computational core package (motherboard, CPU, memory) because I'm upgrading all of that together, or I'm just building a new machine. And like you, I used to buy bleeding edge stuff but now I make stuff last as long as I can. Now when it is time for a new machine, I tend to overspec it in terms of memory and storage while buying 2 or 3 version releases back on the technology, because I'm not a fan of my wallet bleeding out to pay for bleeding edge technology that the price will crash down on in 3 to 6 months (or at least that's how it used to be, video cards have become a bit of a nightmare these days.) I have a (IIRC) 610+ gaming keyboard that is probably at least 7 years old and has had the keycaps replaced twice. It works just as well as the day I opened the box. If it ever decides to die I'll try to find an updated one (or maybe the same one on ebay, frankly) I think there's a benefit to the cheaper ones if you're carrying it places, though. It would be a lot easier to lose a $30 one vs a $100 one. But if it's mostly going to stick around the house? Get the Logitech and maybe consider an even cheaper than $30 option for when you leave the house. Microsoft released a 12-in Surface Pro with a Qualcomm CPU inside. While it looks to be a lovely machine, one would have to be highly motivated for specific reasons to opt for this version over the larger 13-in since it's only a half inch smaller in each direction and only about $100 cheaper to start out. Having used a Surface Go for years (I keep it in the glove box of the car) there is value in these minimally size machines.
If something of that size works for you, holding out for a sale in a few months when they can be discounted somewhere between 15 to 20% off of retail gets pretty close to optimal. Posted by: Alteria Pilgram - My President has convictions. at May 07, 2025 06:07 AM (amnH6) 61

@49/Wolfus: Logitech does make a solid keyboard you can count on. If you choose to spend the extra money on it, you should end up with a keyboard that will last you years.
The last replacement keyboard I needed for my PC, I looked at Logitech, but their offerings had become rather expensive for what I wanted/needed, so I went with an alternative from Redragon (the K-550RGB-1): https://tinyurl.com/3u2w9pn6 That's been a very solid keyboard for me and I'm quite happy with it. It's stood up well. I insist on a full sized keyboard with the old-school travel on the keys and solid tactile feedback. Modern low profile keys on keyboards, or smaller width keyboards drive me crazy. I've never looked into Chesona. Look at reviews on Youtube perhaps? Unless you have had literal hands-on experience with a Chinese knockoff keyboard, oh boy, I don't think I'd be looking at one. The few I've used have been complete crap. Keyboards are something you can use every few seconds when you're sitting in front of a machine and because of that having a well-designed, well-built keyboard is not the area to be scrimping. One thing I like a LOT about the older logitech I have is that it has a wheel for the volume control instead of buttons. It's a little thing but it's shocking how much little stuff like that will make a difference. You can find some that have light control dials, too. BTW, definitely get a backlit keyboard. I wasn't thinking about a gaming keyboard. And if it's going to be rechargeable, it needs to be a USB-A connector at the computer end, since the four slots on the back of the iMac are all that older size. USB-C at the keyboard end, USB-A at the computer end.

Picking out a CPU for a Windows/Linux desktop computer right now is completely fubar. Intel is a hot mess, AMD Is making some killer products right now that they tend to run a bit on the hot side, and then there's Qualcomm which still has yet to enter the desktop arena. Pixy banging on the AMD CPUs is spot on though that tends to work best for those who are going to build their own boxes. For the rest of us schlubs, you get stuck with Intel's latest release of the same chip they've been releasing for the last 5 years. My new desktop that's arriving today, I'm looking at keeping it for a maximum of 4 to 5 years. Hopefully by then everything will have sorted itself out.

I would submit that gaming keyboards are often the best choice if you can find one that isn't garish. I have no documentation or proof, but I suspect they are built to stand up to abuse/movement better than regular office keyboards and likely have longer "tap" life.
Ergonomics might be a wash, but I bet they've even got the edge there, too. Office workers take breaks. Gamers will sit there for hours. Posted by: Boron Cobbie - Satisfy your boss' every desire, ignore almost all of your husband's at May 07, 2025 06:32 AM (r9cXI) 83

One thought, is to buy adapters that goes say from USB-C to USB-A If that is the issue. It seems to me, that Apple machines have keyboard requirements that differ from PC requirements somewhat. I don't know if that is exactly true or not, might be something you might want to investigate. Posted by: Alteria Pilgram - My President has convictions. at May 07, 2025 06:34 AM (amnH6) 86

Interestingly enough, gaming computers work the same way. If you're not playing video-intensive games you probably don't need the video card, but computer manufacturers focus almost entirely on energy saving and battery life. If you want performance and the high performing CPUs you almost have to look for gaming-specific systems. Otherwise you're going to end up with some "U" or other energy saving CPU in the system you just spent $1000 on.
If battery life if what you need then that's fine. But if performance is what you're after that's not what the manufacturers are selling you. Posted by: Boron Cobbie - Satisfy your boss' every desire, ignore almost all of your husband's at May 07, 2025 06:35 AM (r9cXI) 89

Keyboards are a fascinating topic. Yes, I have issues.
To my understanding we have two choices. Mechanical switch, keyboards and membrane switch keyboards. The membrane switch keyboards are low travel and basically like laptop keyboards. Mechanical switch keyboards are like the old IBMs and go clackity clickety clackity clackity. You can spend the rest of your trying to sort out which switch to use. I like membrane keyboards anymore because they're quiet and most likely because that's what I've been used to because of laptops. In the far distant past I used IBM keyboards and when I had to go to membrane keyboards I nearly had a fit and died. But I survived. Gaming keyboards today tend to be mechanical switched and can cost you hundreds and hundreds of dollars. Posted by: Alteria Pilgram - My President has convictions. at May 07, 2025 06:43 AM (amnH6) 99

Posted by: Boron Cobbie Yes they do use the video card and have done so for a very long time. The good news here is you don't need crazy expensive video cards to make everything work well for still photography processing. Given that AI is penetrating everything in computing right now, I expect the video card demands for still photography processing to go up as time goes on, but I doubt it will ever be as intensive as you need for video processing. My new machine's coming with a 4060 in it; It's going to run circles around what I have right now. For the rest of the video card world. Yeah not so much.
