Three locations have been attacked, Pakistan's military says
Relations between India and Pakistan - both nuclear-armed states - have declined sharply following a deadly militant attack on tourists in Kashmir last month
Indian-administered Kashmir has seen a decades-long insurgency which has claimed thousands of lives
Kashmir is claimed by both India and Pakistan in its entirety

The terrorism against tourists in Kashmir happened two weeks ago.

Relations between India and Pakistan are cratering following a deadly militant attack in Indian-administered Kashmir that has sparked tit-for-tat reprisals and raised fears of another military escalation between the nuclear-armed rivals.
India and Pakistan both control parts of Kashmir but claim it in full, and have fought three wars over the mountainous territory. In 2019, Indian jets bombed targets inside Pakistan after a cross-border militant attack killed at least 40 Indian paramilitary personnel in its part of Kashmir.

All but one of the 26 tourists massacred in the attack on April 22 were Indian citizens. New Delhi swiftly pointed the finger at Pakistan, downgraded ties and suspended its participation in a crucial water-sharing treaty.
Pakistan has denied involvement and said that any attempt to stop or divert water belonging to Pakistan would be considered an act of war.
As tensions escalate, India's navy said it launched test missile strikes in a show of strength.
India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi has vowed to pursue the attackers "to the ends of the earth," while the United Nations has called on the neighbors to exercise "maximum restraint."

India is calling it Operation Sindoor.

'Sindoor' has a deep meaning for the Indians.

...Sindoor is the Hindi word for vermillion -- which married Hindu women often apply to their forehead. The operation's name appears to be a reference to the manner in which gunmen shot dead 26 people -- almost all tourists -- in Pahalgam, Indian-administered Kashmir, on April 22.
The attack triggered the spiralling tensions between India and Pakistan that led to Wednesday morning's strikes.
Multiple survivor accounts have detailed how the gunmen segregated male tourists from the women, and then pointedly identified those who were non-Muslim before shooting them dead -- leaving many married Hindu women widowed.

Pakistan's intelligence agencies fund and direct several terrorist groups. They routinely massacre civilians.

I sure wouldn't mind seeing India launch a Test Nuke at this terrorist shithole.

Not so much. India was very pro-Soviet and anti-Western, so the US was kept at arms length. We backed Pakistan, which for a while had a nice, pro-western elite made up of bought-and-paid for secular generals.

But that was long ago. Now India has shifted towards us and the Pakis are hanging with China.

Exactly right. Before the British, there were god knows how many tribes of people all fighting over resources for centuries. They were not a united country, and spoke a lot of different languages (thousands, I think?). Ancient blood feuds, religious hatred (muslims and hindus), caste systems, etc. etc.

But like -- this is the thing. This type of shit exists all over the planet. We, as the US, cannot put ourselves in the middle of all of these conflicts. Or even worse, pick sides, because our batting average on that one is pretty fucking bad.

288 There's a Bollywood war movie about an officer in the 1999 Kargil War vs Pakistan that I enjoyed - Shershaah.

About an infantry officer leading troops in the mountains against Paki fortifications that are always above the attacking Indian forces. He was posthumously awarded India's highest military medal.

It does have the necessary Bollywood love story stuff. Taking-up too much of the movie in my opinion, but that's Bollywood. It's on Amazon Prime Video. May be on other streaming services.

289 Bollywood movies are great if you adjust your brain to them. Just remember - they don't consider there to be different genres of film. Hence action movies where people start singing and dancing, and comedies with scary horror stuff. You never know what may happen.

Now that people see that a war like in Ukraine, with hundreds of thousands of dead, is possible and nuclear weapons haven't been used, there will likely be more such wars, because governments will grow bolder and tell themselves that war is a sensible option.
This is similar to the time before WWII, with the invasion of Manchuria or of Czechoslovakia.

294 Bear with me for a moment.

Both India and Pakistan have deliverable nuclear weapons. As noted above, about 180 Indian and about 170 Pakistani. Neither is under the control of a superpower sponsor and they will do as they bloody well please.

The primary hardware difference is delivery systems. Both have missiles. Most of them are short to medium range. Each side can devastate the other's country. *However* Pakistan's missiles have a max range of about 1500 miles once you convert from Metric. India's longest range missiles have a range of ..... *5000* miles. Remember, India has launched 20 or so satellites, and that takes much more powerful launch vehicles.

It must also be noted that Pakistan has openly declared in the past that they have a first-strike targeting doctrine and not a deterrent doctrine. They have said that they have the right to attack with nukes first.

You can bet that the Indian equivalent of the Pentagon knows this. So what do you want to bet that the Indians are at least contingency planning their own first strike options with emphasis on the Pakistani nuclear force and means of production, in addition to taking out the entity called Pakistan.

That could be done with the short/medium range Indian arsenal. Which leaves the 5000 mile range larger missiles. Any kind of nuclear exchange involving the Ummah is going to create a worldwide Jihad. Unavoidable.

So, what would happen as far as dealing with the Ummah if those longer ranged missiles were aimed at Mecca, Medina, Qom, Riyadh, Teheran, and the Iranian nuclear arsenal and production lines?

From the Indian point of view this could be the best that they can do to protect themselves.
