23 This painting reminds me of something that's always bothered me about classical paintings of Christ and / or the Apostles - with rare exceptions, it seems almost cliche that Jesus is portrayed as being in his early 30s, yet the disciples tend to be painted as old, balding men with yuge gray / white beards.

The many poses and expressions of the people reflect the many reactions of the crowd: confusion, amazement, wonder, worship, fear, doubt. The brilliant figures of Christ and the woman, just off center, lead the viewer down into the rocky crypt with its harsh angles and darkness alleviated only by a few torches. The contrast of light and power against the somber browns is striking.

It brings to mind a passage from LOTR:

"Out of doubt, out of dark, to the day's rising
he rode singing in the sun, sword unsheathing.
Hope he rekindled, and in hope he ended;
over death, over dread, over doom lifted
out of loss, out of life, unto long glory."

As the Psalm says 'Thou shall not allow your Holy One to see corruption", I half suspect that is the original impetus for the 3 days before Jesus' resurrection.

We had a puppy out of Possum. He was small and sickly. One evening when I was inattentive, Mama rolled over on him and suffocated him. He was limp and blue. HM did artificial respiration on him and got him going again. He grew up to be a huge silver and white. We called him Lazarus (Ch. Soyara's Esar Eleazar).
