It's past time to have a serious discussion about the exploitation happening at HBCUs and shut these diploma mills down. There is not a single good one. Even the "top tier elite" ones are barely equal to decent local nothing-special state schools.

On a side note, which actually ties in with the story about NPR hating the Declaration: as some of you know, about 20-odd years ago I played in a Concord MA production of 1776. I met a group of people there, and we've been getting together for dinner every couple of months in the succeeding years.

We've all said how we would love to do the show again, and one of my friends who is a member of the Concord Players board of directors suggests it every so often.

This year, for the 250th anniversary of Lexington and Concord, they decided on the egregious, useless musical Urinetown. When 1776 was brought up as an appropriate choice for 2026, the response was - and I quote - "that's a show about old white guys and that's not what we need right now" (my emphasis)

I don't think Godzilla has any meaning in Minus One. I think he's just a giant monster.

But, the connection to the original film that I see is that both movies are fantasies about Japan picking itself up after WWII, using its own ingenuity and derring-do to overcome something huge.

Neither mentions the American occupation, at all. It's all on Japan's part to beat Godzilla, and they do it. First, through sci-fi nonsense (the oxygen destroyer) and later with something more closely approximating reality (the use of gases to sink the monster).

Consider: An electric drier is ALL electric. A gas drier uses gas AND electric. Two utility bill charges vs one charge. The choice is clear. Stay with electric (and don't buy one that's internet-capable, 'kay). Get an old Kenmore from a used appliance shop (ask me how I know).

218 Not a movie guy, certainly not a sci-fi or monster movie guy, but that Godzilla movie was interesting for its quite accurate and very un-monster-movie details. The NCO on the little island who (correctly) suspected the protagonist was a traitor (tokutai pilot faking engine trouble). The people living in ruins in Tokyo. The very interesting and accurate political elements in the discussions among citizens and former naval officers when hatching their plan to defeat the monster. None of these things have anything to do with a monster story, and they're all accurately portrayed.

268 If the dryer's heating element is the problem, they are easy to replace. A ten year old dryer is better than a new one, and a twenty year old dryer is better still.

You should have watched the Avalanche/Stars Game 7 on Saturday. Bleach blonde seated right behind the Stars bench got lots of screen time with her womanhood bubbling up out of her low cut top like an out-of-control sourdough starter.

Sigh
I will bring this discussion to next Sunday's gun thread.

278 Resorting to cheap slurs like "nigger" is a sign of serious deficiency in the basic life skill of blistering invective. Black people aren't freaks. If you're going to dehumanize somebody, you have to treat them like a human first. Then unleash a torrent of top-volume personal abuse that knocks the leaves off the trees.

One of my fellow bouncers at the Topless bar - shortly after that movie came out - had an evening with her in a motel room. He was assigned to drive her around and body guard her while she was working as a feature dancer at the club. He was a young, handsome, guy who was very successful with women, they got bored, and one thing led to another.

282 86 Texas has brought both Cinco De Mayo and Juneteenth too the American holiday scene.

I truly apologize for this.
Posted by: Sebastian Melmoth at May 05, 2025 12:14 PM (VofaG)

Texas celebrates things in Texas. Its everyone else that follows the lead.

I mean, Juneteenth is specific to Tx. Biden foisted that shit upon the masses.

Cinco de Mayo is just an excuse to get shitfaced, if we needed an excuse.
Posted by: Sponge - F*ck Cancer at May 05, 2025 12:16 PM (IXZGh)

---------

Speaking as a Texan... I don't see the issue. Juneteenth is probably the only "new" holiday that really makes sense. The day the last slave was set free seems like cause for celebration. Why wouldn't that be a worthwhile American sentiment today? It's a damned sight more important than "Indigenous Peoples Day," and it's a lot more sincere than Black History Month.

And yes, Cinco de Mayo is just an excuse to drink Margaritas.

No, I mean now, when it's known as a cheap racial slur.

If you press that button, you disable all the other ones. If you're looking to shred some shithead in a park or whatever, you can hit them way harder with something else.
