Perpetually-Smiling Endangered Amphibian Now Thrives in Artificial Wetlands in Mexico City

doof-Axolotl.jpg

In Mexico, a captive-breeding program for one of the world’s most endangered amphibians has successfully released 18 individuals into suitable habitat.

The scientists behind the project found that all 18 survived after being recaptured, and even gained weight and made friends with each other, offering hope that if enough habitat can be found, this wild and weird amphibian will take care of itself.

South America has many native and charismatic species who became endangered from poaching and habitat loss, but the axolotl suffered from a different history.

It was likely already endangered over 300 years ago, when the Spanish conquest of the Aztecs concluded and the lakes which underfed the area now called Mexico City were drained by the conquerors.

Those semi-underground lakes were the secret refuges of this bizarre salamander, which today is considered Critically-Endangered by the IUCN. That’s a slight exaggeration, though, because as one of the most fascinating species on Earth, the axolotl is found in aquariums around the world by the tens of thousands.

Like the octopus or platypus, there’s just nothing quite like the axolotl—perhaps why the Aztecs, who nonetheless ate them regularly, considered them the offspring of the fire god.

***

Mexico City is a megalopolis, and the murky waters of the five ancient and sacred spring-fed lakes where the axolotl live have a long road to recovery themselves. The scientists have showed though that if time is taken to provide even just a little help—they installed natural water filters in the artificial quarry wetland to clean the water—this little, perpetually-smiling fire god can continue on.

“If we can restore this [wetland] habitat and restore the axolotl’s population in a city of more than 20 million people,” Dr. Zambrano said BBC, “I feel that we have hope for humanity.”

Read the whole thing. Personally, I'm not convinced we need to try to save every species from extinction. But I guess as long as we're not causing adverse situations for humans in the process (hello, delta smelt), it is worth trying.

Speaking of Underground Bodies of Water

Courtesy of Hordeling neverenoughcaffeine, who was "reading a novel by Jill Patton Walsh and part of the plot involves the hidden rivers of London"

The lost rivers that lie beneath London

Dozens of rivers and canals were buried beneath London's streets more than a century ago. How do they look today? To find traces of them you'll need to have a good ear, know where to look and visit some unlikely places.

Among the congested traffic of central London's St Pancras Road, around the corner from the glass and steel skyscrapers of the Euston Road, it is hard to imagine a river once ran through grassy fields.

But outside St Pancras Old Church is a plaque showing a sketch of people in that exact spot bathing on the banks of the Fleet in 1827. The river is one of many in London that was converted into a sewer as the capital's population grew.

Today, in many parts of the city you could be standing within inches of one of its lost rivers and not even realise it.

"Wherever you live, not far from your doorstep, you can probably track down a hidden river you never would have guessed would be there," says Alex Werner, head of history collections at the Museum of London.

"It's a shame so many rivers were buried - today they would enhance the landscape," says Paul Talling, who has written a book on London's lost rivers. "But at the time it was necessary - in pre-Victorian times, they were used as open sewers."

Definitely read the whole thing! Lots more information at the link. Also plenty of photos.

London's lost rivers

River Fleet - Became polluted as Smithfield butchers threw remains of dead animals into the river, and was eventually incorporated into the sewer system

River Tyburn - Flowing through Regents Park under Buckingham Palace, the river was once reputed to have some of London's best salmon fishing

River Walbrook - Its name is thought to derive from the fact the river ran under the Roman London Wall

River Westbourne - Remains of the river flow through a pipe running above Sloane Square Tube station

River Effra - Banks of the Oval cricket ground were built with earth excavated during the enclosing of the river

Thanks, neverenoughcaffeine!

Another Crappy Story

Last night's feature on The "Delco Pooper" got ya wanting more?

The ONT has ya covered!

Fast-Food Restaurant Inspires Poop Jokes with Bizarre-Looking Menu Item

black-gold-strips.jpg

Dico’s, a popular Chinese fast food restaurant chain, has been attracting a lot of attention because of its newest menu item, charred-looking chicken strips that don’t have the most appetizing appearance.

Since 2015, Dico’s has been celebrating ‘Krispy Day’ by adding one or two crispy items to its menu, but this year, their newest additions have been attracting more attention than usual, mostly because of their unusual look. The “Black Gold Pepper Crispy Pork” became available at Dico’s restaurants across China at the end of last month, and it has been going viral on social media ever since. Not only do the crispy strips look charred, but their shape has been drawing comparisons to human poop and inspiring hundreds of funny comments online. Although the company has clarified that the meat is covered in a special “black gold coating” that causes it to turn black when deep-fried, most people are still not very tempted to try the new menu item.

***

“I can’t even poop something that looks this good,” one person commented.

“It’s a bit dry, you should drink more water,” someone else joked.

What say you, Hordelings - do you like when I dump these kinds of stories on you?

Drink more water, you say?

66 Meanwhile, in Ukraine:
1. The Ukrainians are attempting another cross-border attack in the northeast. It is not going well for them. Maybe they are trying to draw Russian troops away from other sectors. Maybe it is a PR stunt to embarrass the Russians on Victory Day.
2. The Russians are picking up the pace as they grind forward all along the eastern sectors. No "Big Arrow" offensives yet.
3. Things are picking up in the far south, which had been oddly quiet for months. The Russians have crossed the river near Kherson, too soon to say if this is just a raid, or the first moves to take the entire province, which has already been claimed by Russia.

Acid may work, but my sovereign remedy for a rusty fuel tank is to boil it out with caustic soda. Fill tank to at least above the crud line, add two cans of Red Devil lye, and place tank over a firepit, and let the water boil for a couple of hours. Removes all the sticky crud, and nearly all the rust. Tank will be clean enough to eat out of. Rinse, well, for sure!

He's going to have to campaign in the by-election. I am going to try to get a meet-up with him, and wave my gas bill in his face (politely, of course). Cost of gas: $71.88, Federal Fuel Charge aka Carbon Tax: $116.81, and the maggots charge GST on top of that! I'm going to tell him, "Look, Pierre, you want to win the next election when the minority government falls? Here's your #1 campaign platform: axe the carbon tax. Axe it altogether, don't just hide it upstream as Marx Carnage is doing. And then, refund to homeowners all the money stolen by the Liberal government over the years the carbon tax was in effect. Every fucking dime, Pierre! This would amount to several thousand bucks in the pocket of every homeowner, and many renters, several thousand bucks of their own fucking money.

Downtown Washington DC was also built over a small river (a creek, more or less). As I understand it, no underground drainage tunnels were installed, they just filled the creek in and decided it wasn't there.

Buildings like the National Archives, where the Declaration of Independence and Constitution are stored, have to have their basements continuously pumped to keep out the ground water.

Winning!

153 @68--AOP, boiling a tank like that is the most effective way to clean it, a word of caution though, watch the temp on the water, solder melts IIRC at 360 370 degrees so don't do what I did and really crank the fire to speed the process, if there's any solder used for a prior repair OR the manufacture, you will ruin the tank.
Posted by: IRONGRAMPA at May 05, 2025 11:10 PM (hKoQL)

361 F is the lowest point at which any blend of solder begins to soften. As long as there is water in the tank, boiling, the temperature of the metal will be at 212 F, give or take a tiny amount. Well, a little hotter, because of the dissolved lye, but not 150 degrees hotter.

There will be a temperature gradient across the thickness of the tank wall, to be sure. Heat would not flow were there not one. But steel is a good conductor of heat, and the walls of a fuel tank are rarely more than .040" thick. And fuel tanks made of two halves are joined by a pinch weld, not solder. Any solder found is likely an old repair. Should it melt off (very unlikely), redoing the repair is a cinch with tank out of the car.

It’s a highly-bioavailable source of phosphorus. People with kidney trouble have to limit phosphorus, because their kidneys can’t clear enough. Dark sodas are one of the first things they cut out. (Although most root beers are phosphoric acid-free.)

Does make you wonder how safe it is for consumption by people with normal kidney function. Of course, many other foods have high phosphorus. Yogurt is higher than soda.

230 Hiya. Medical report. Skip if you don't care for such.

Visited with the surgeon today, the one who spent a couple of hours rooting around in my bowels thirteen months ago. He acknowledged that the surgery I had was just about the most difficult and complicated there is. Spent almost two weeks in the hospital and many weeks healing.

He said putting me back together would be about the same, and asked how ready I felt, "physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually." The thing is, the surgery before was imperative. The repair job, actually two surgeries months apart, would be elective, vs living with this ostomy bag. And of course, no guarantee it will be successful, and, yes, could even potentially do me in.

I'm in my eighth decade and while I'm in pretty good shape otherwise, I have to wonder if it's worth the risk and struggle "at my advanced age." I would rather be repaired. Physically, I believe I could handle it. Mentally, well, I'd rather not suffer hospital coffee again. Emotionally, lots to think about. Spiritually, lots to pray about. (cue suspenseful-chord music)

Stay tuned for the next exciting chapter. Maybe.

You have a "perfect storm" type scenario in the making. Ottawa has absolutely no leverage in reference to Alberta. Alberta holds all the cards and can pretty much dictate what's going to happen. Then, throw in the fact that the Garden Gnome PM is an environmental zealot (as is his wife). He's going to have some sleepless nights. Either he can cave to Alberta's demands (and make no mistake...that's what todays Smith speech was...a thinly veiled ultimatum) or he can proceed as he has for the last 20 years tailoring his whole being around alternative energies and sticking it to fossil fuel companies.

I think Carney is going to stall. He'll pay lip service to Alberta, but never concretely follow through. It will be the Bureaucratic Shuffle. It will be interesting to see if the people of Alberta force the issue by getting enough signatures to include a referendum vote in 2026.

If we are talking about ongoing abuse, and I thought I could not dissuade my client (which would be 100% of cases because kid-touchers cannot be trusted), I think I would be obligated to contact the authorities. The relevant ethical rule is admittedly general on this point. But I certainly would inform authorities and let the chips fall where they may afterward professional discipline-wise.

301 Well, I cut Ace out of my will, the trusts, all of it last week.

Might think about reconsidering, maybe.

I am told he is my third cousin twice removed.

304 bear with asymmetrical balls,

Not trying to be argumentative. What would a legal justification be for violating attorney-client privilege?

Plotting murder? Something else? I don't know. Just know attorney-client privilege is as close to sacrosanct as the confessional apparently used to be.

Great picks. Tatum was much more adventurous harmonically and those runs, oh my. Waller was always centered in the pocket - his raw musicality carries the day. They are both so utterly great, gifts straight from God.

Under TX's applicable rule (1.05 of the Disciplinary Rules of Professional Conduct), I may break confidence when I have "reason to believe it is necessary to do so in order to prevent the client from committing a criminal or fraudulent act." And I must do so when I have "confidential information clearly establishing that a client is likely to commit a criminal or fraudulent act that is likely to result in death or substantial bodily harm to a person ... to the extent revelation reasonably appears necessary to prevent" the act.

In a nutshell:

Past crimes? Omerta. Prospective crimes? Nah.
