Gun Thread: May Edition!

050425 cal scaled.jpg

Howdy, Y'all! Welcome to the wondrously fabulous Gun Thread! As always, I want to thank all of our regulars for being here week in and week out, and also offer a bigly Gun Thread welcome to any newcomers who may be joining us tonight. Howdy and thank you for stopping by! I hope you find our wacky conversation on the subject of guns 'n shooting both enjoyable and informative. You are always welcome to lurk in the shadows of shame, but I'd like to invite you to jump into the conversation, say howdy, and tell us what kind of shooting you like to do!

Holy Shitballs! As predicted last week, it's now May. How did that happen you ask? I think it has to do with the calendar and use of magic beans. It's going to be something of a quickie this week guys and gals. Apologies in advance.

With that, step into the dojo and let's get to the gun stuff below, shall we?

******

FUNdamentals of Fundamentals!

So what are these fundamentals we speak of? Well to my mind the big four are; stance, grip, sight alignment and trigger yanking. But are there others? I suppose safety is one, although I like to think of safety as something so non-negotiable and fundamentally fundamental that it's practically one of the laws of the universe. What else do we have?

Practice and range time! The entire process of going to the range regularly and focusing on fundamentals is, in itself, a fundamental. It's fundamentals within fundamentals, man!

Q: Did Weasel smoke pot?
A: No!

What I am saying is you have to make time for the range in order to practice your fundamentals. Sure, you can dry-fire 'n stuff at home, but there is simply no substitute for real, live shooting and practicing with a plan in mind. You need to make it a big enough priority that it actually stands a decent chance of happening on a fairly regular basis. I know for a fact I am not nearly as good a shooter or wind coach as I was when I was on the range practicing every week. There is simply no way to maintain a competitive edge without that level of commitment.

Not interested in competing you say? That's fine. Are you interested in basic competency? That's what is at risk when you go to the range once every six months or year and call it good. If you don't have a plan and a commitment to improve through the methodical application of sound fundamentals, then you cannot expect much progress. Make just a little bit of effort and you will see results. Having said that, some people are also constrained by time or economics, and I get that. If this is the case you simply need to manage expectations.

Buy ammo. Go to the range. Focus on fundamentals.

2025 NoVAMoMe

050425 hello-moron scaled.jpg

Note: One of the great joys of NoVAMoMe season, at least for me, is being able to cut and paste the entire block of text below and haranguing you to attend the event. Are you attending? Are you focusing on the fundamentals of attending?

Alright, guys and gals, the long awaited and highly anticipated details of the 2025 NoVAMoMe are here! That's right, I finally got my act together and updated the information page for 2025, and need to go over a few details. First, the date is June 21st, 2025. Nextly, my bestest blog buddy bluebell and I have decided 2025 will be a year of NoVAMoMe simplification, and want to pass along the changes from prior years.

First, no more registration and no more advance charge for food. If you would like to attend, send an email to WeaselBell Productions, and let us know. You will be directed to a sekrit webpage with all of the details. We do ask once you have decided to attend to let us know so we can coordinate an expected count with venue management. Once there if you are hungry or thirsty simply order from the onsite menu and pay separately. Cash and credit cards accepted. Next, although fun, we have decided to take a break from the raffles and mug sales this year. Depending on how it goes, that may be something we bring back in future years. While your generosity is always appreciated, with no prize table, please leave donations and contributions at home, but bring your appetite for a great afternoon spent with your imaginary online friends.

A NoVAMoMe PSA from our pal bluebell

Hi folks - just a quick PSA. If you write for info about the MoMe, please give us a few words in the body of the email just so I know you are a Moron and not a spammer (moron). I do receive spam on this email account because it's sitting right here in my nic, so that's why I'm asking. I don't want to give our details to a spammer. Also, remember to check your spam folder if you don't receive a reply email.

Thanks.
bluebell

Seriously, just send an email then go to the website with the password provided. If you forget, a link to the email is on the main page, left sidebar. If you do not sign up, bluebell will be disappointed. Weasel will be disappointed, too, but it's bluebell you need to worry about.

That's it, people. Email WeaselBell Productions today!

Cigar of the Week

050425 diogenes La Gloria Cubana scaled.jpg

This week our pal Diogenes scores again with this excellent review of the La Gloria Cubana Classic

La Gloria Cubana Classic. Sadly, this week's report is on a stick I have covered previously so I won't dwell on it for long. However it did cause me to think about how we taste things. If memory serves (and that is less and less so these days) I wrote that the Classic is a perfectly satisfactory cigar with a sharp introductory taste of pepper and cinnamon that quickly smooths out to a genuinely fine smoke. An even ash and easy draw, it is a pleasant 30 minute cigar. This one not so much. Very strong pepper flavor that did not abate, an uneven burn, difficult to keep lit, and an aftertaste that was not pleasant at all. I tossed it after just ten minutes. So... why? Why did it taste so bad? I learned how to really taste things from a retired Regimental Sergeant Major of the Scottish Highland Regiment. He was teaching me about the differences in scotches, but what he really taught me was how to take a moment and really taste what I was eating, drinking, or in the case of the cigar, smoking. What does it taste like? Is it sharp, sweet, or savory? The Sergeant Major's lesson has become incredibly valuable over the years. It has been especially useful with cigars. I liked the Classic, it is a good cigar and I think with this one, I was just unlucky. It happens. How to enjoy a cigar can take many forms, and I have no particular favorite. But I always try to slow down whatever I am doing, look at the cigar, feel it, smell it, and taste it after clipping. And then lighting it, experience the first couple of draws. Then let the aroma of the smoke tell me it's story. You can do the same with liquors, food, and other drink. I recommend it. Everything will taste better. Well, everything except okra.

Excellent, Diogenes! Thank you!

Here are some different online cigar vendors. You will find they not only carry different brands and different lines from those brands, but also varying selections of vitolas (sizes/shapes) of given lines. It's good to have options, especially if you're looking for a specific cigar.

Famous-smoke.com

A note about sources. The brick & mortar/online divide exists with cigars, as with guns, and most consumer products, with respect to price. As with guns - since both are "persecuted industries", basically - I make a conscious effort to source at least some of my cigars from my local store(s). It's a small thing, but the brick & mortar segment for both guns and tobacco are precious, and worth supporting where you can. And if you're lucky enough to have a good cigar store/lounge available, they're often a good social event with many dangerous people of the sort who own scary gunz, or read smart military blogs like this one. -rhomboid

Anyone have others to include? Perhaps a small local roller who makes a cigar you like? Send me your recommendation and a link to the site!

13 So, last Friday went to the range with my nephew. Plan was originally to do .22 plinking, rifle at 100 yard to work on the scope that gave me problems at the TXMoMe, handgun then shotgun to do a little skeet shooting.

We did not succeed. LOL

Started with the .22. Can I tell you how much FUN it is to shoot targets with a .22? Spent at least 45 minutes there with both handguns and a rifle. Sooo relaxing.

Next up - rifle range

Counting down to NH. Ammo ordered.

Posted by: RedMindBlueState at May 04, 2025 07:06 PM (Wnv9h)

15 I put 100 rounds through my new Ruger RXM 9mm pistol, a Glock Generation 3 clone. I went to the local shooting spot, tacked up some paper plates at 25 yards, and banged away with a medley of ammo with no problems. The sights are nice and big, with a big dot on the front sight and none at the square-notched rear, which is how it should be. 124 grain loads were spot on for elevation, but hit well to the left, which is usual for me and fixed sighted guns. I’ll need to drift the rear sight over in its dovetail.
Trigger action was the usual striker-fired crunchy and mushy but had a decent final pull of around five pounds, which beats a factory Glock, so I won’t be messing with changing trigger parts.
Accuracy was quite adequate. I didn’t have my sandbag rest setup with me, but shooting with my elbows braced let me shoot groups which mostly stayed on the 8” plates. I bet it will do a lot better than that from a good rest. It seemed to really like Winchester 124 JHP.

to be continued.

18 Ruger RXM continued...

The Magpul grip frame is one piece, so you can’t adjust the grip size by changing out backstraps. It either fits you or it doesn’t. Magpul has shorter and longer grip frames coming soon.
The slide is already cut for mounting a red dot sight. The irons are tall enough to work with one.
It came with two Magpul 15-round magazines and will take any compatible Glock-style magazine. Loading more than a couple of rounds with my bare hands was a chore, so I was glad to have a Maglula magazine loader with me.
I paid $400 before sales tax, and overall, I say it is excellent value for the money.

This was one of the things that bothered me so very much in the Air Force. It's true that we weren't a ground force, but plenty of AF personnel were going to get engaged on the ground in some sorts of fights. And yet, except for the SPs, almost nobody actually got to fire personal weapons except for the once a year qualification. It was twice a year if you were forward deployed, or in certain jobs (like living with the Army as their advisor). It sure as heck made a mockery of "Warrior Days" and those sorts of things, IMHO.

Are you now near any Morons with some rural property?

For next to nothing, I am working on a gun range at the farm for steel, swinging soda bottles, spinner targets, plus some good ol' paper.

I think a Moron buddy would be happy to have you at his "range" if you helped with the setup work.

Posted by: Pillage Idiot at May 04, 2025 07:17 PM (HlyYF)

40 So, we move on over to the 100 yard range and I take my rifle out and put my nephew on the spotting scope.
I started with a steel target at 100 yards to see how far off the scope is when the bullet hits the berm behind it.

Now for those that have forgotten when I was in Texas in October no one could see my shot hit any of the targets at 100 yards. So I did not even try to shoot at anything further.

So with my nephew behind me, I aim at the steel target and pull the trigger.....BANG!!!! DING!!! A hit.
Hmmmm, pull trigger again..BANG!! DING!!

Ok, let's shoot at the target I set up at 100 yards.
I tell my nephew where I am aiming and pull the trigger.
Shot is 3 inches high and 1.5 inches to the right. Hmm
Adjust and take another shot and I am 2 high 1.5 right.
Look at my scope and the turret is 3 MOA from 0
Turn turret down to 0. Take aim and BULLSEYE!!

41 Diogenes, great review and wisdom on enjoying sensory experiences.

Have not yet tried a Gloria Cubana, of course it's on the list to sample. Probably was down the list initially as most of their offerings seem to be towards the strong side.

And you are absolutely correct - or at least I have the same experience - about "lemons" among known favorites or at least cigars that we have tried and liked before. Just had this happen with one myself.

I try (though often fail, partially) to give new buys a few weeks in the tupperdor to rest before burning. If I got a 5-pack or something, and the first one is a loser, I definitely give the others more time. Either the time needed for resting, or the "bad stick" phenomenon, seems to have explained most of my bad experiences in the past.

One exception: My Father New Wave connecticuts. 5-pack of coronas. Spaced out consumption over 2 months, possibly longer. Just bitter losers I didn't finish. Coulda been a "lemon" 5-pack I guess. Anyway, surprised, somewhat tempted to try a single again if I come across one.

When I was in RHS, one of the perks was hitting the range once a year, and the expectation that officers would shoot rifles. The rest of the AF? Not so much.

But the silver lining was that for my first gun I bought an M9. Later I bought an M18. All to practice with on my own.

53 Shot the 1911 in the action handgun match yesterday. Did fine considering amount of practice (umm, well below the Weasel-Recommended Average Frequency or WRAF) with that platform recently.

Pro tip: when cleaning the slide and reassembling it, be sure to reinstall the slide stop fully through the slide. If you don't quite push it in all the way, the pistol will function, except slide will not hold back on empty.

This bedeviled me the first 4 stages of the match. "Click" - confusion - rack to check. I'm not too wrapped around the axle about my time or relative score, but I like a run to be smooth and accurate. This problem above threw me off my rhythm over and over. Snot accurately enough, and last 2 stages much smoother when pistol finally fully re-assembled properly.

60 for USCCA guy...
You're not administratively handling your gun on a range?! Are you teleporting your gun to the lane? Are you not pausing between shots to discuss with your lane buddy what you're doing with your stance and trigger pull?

Hoo boy, there's a LOT of administrative handling going on at the ranges where I've shot. That's why there's rules about your gun being in a rug or case when it goes to the line. And why the range officer will knock you cold if you turn around with the gun in your hand while discussing your trigger pull.

And, of course, the most infamous "administrative handling" regarding defensive use of handguns? Re-holstering. Especially if you didn't have to fire in self-defense. It's so bad there are channels on youTube devoted to cops holstering their guns badly.

I tell my nephew I am changing to another section of the target to see what grouping I can get.
Took 5 shots and 4 of the shots were all sub MOA from center of target with the 5th shot being about 1/4 inch above the other 4.

What in the world happened down in Texas? Do I blame the shooter? Do I blame the range? Do I blame whoever was spotting for me?

I have no idea, all I know is the rifle was on.

After that we sighted in my nephews .308 and then had fun shooting his AR.

Ended the day at the handgun range where I shot my 1911 and a couple of my nephews pistols.

63 A striking sighting this past week. Coming back from somewhere, spotted a new billboard along a nearby freeway. Caught my eye because it was a white background, profile (in black) of a semi-auto pistol.

An ad for a Canik pistol. In CA. In fact, it said something like "the Canik Something-Something, now available in CA!". Almost drove off the road.

First, a billboard to advertise a gun. Unusual. Second, a brand never available here before ("handgun roster" problem) now being sold. I haven't checked in on the legal status of the roster (a ridiculous law that should have been struck down years ago on multiple grounds, except America really has no judiciary when it comes down to it), though I think it's in extremis, finally, in the courts.

Anyway. Not in the market to buy, but gather from chatter over the years that Canik makes decent stuff for a good price (sort of a Citadel/Taurus, but Turkish instead of Filipino or Brazilian).

75 Range trip this week was to zero my newly SBR-ed H&K MR 556A4. I mounted an Aimpoint CompM4S on it (no iron sight backups, yet). I zeroed it at 20 yards (max for my indoor range). Biggest problem for me is that the 11" barrel threw off a big muzzle flash with about every other shot when using cheap M193 55 grain ammo. I'm
pretty sure the muzzle blast was a lot greater than normal for a 16" or 20" barrel, too. Question: Is there a better choice of ammo for an AR platform with an 11" barrel when it comes to reducing the muzzle blast and flash? The rifle is definitely capable of meeting the H&K guarantee of 1 MOA accuracy (I shot a few rounds that went through mostly the same hole), but I know that the muzzle flash was throwing off my concentration.

Those Garmin chronos are nifty. Don't have/need one as I'm not a distance shooter/reloader really. But the long-range guys at the range have them. Paired with an electronic target, the efficiency is amazing. They just pull back up on their elbows, when shooting prone, glance right to check their chrono data, left to see their impact point. Compared to the old methods, amazing.

That is a bit worrisome. And also coincidentally why full auto fire from an open bolt is less problem prone than semi auto with a closed bolt.

It is possible if you have a match chamber or close to one that fouling could build up enough in the chamber to prevent a round to go fully into battery and it would appear scorched.

Another thought, if you were firing reloads, did you use a small base die for resizing. Brass life is a bit shorter but better function in situations like long chains of fire in a hot chamber.

High primer on a handload? I had a batch of .223 reloads with some high primers. My bolt action would crush them into the chamber, but my AR would get very locked up with them.

Posted by: Idaho Spudboy at May 04, 2025 07:46 PM (yko4N)

86 RI Red, making bbq shrimp and scallops but I should have finished the thought. If what I hypothesized is true, then when you pulled the cartridge out, the fouling adhered to the case instead of the chamber.

There are some other possibilities but that is my guess.

If shooting reloads or even factory, you might be getting the same problem GIs did in Vietnam with the AR. Ball powder is dirtier than flake, extruded, etc. and so a change of powder might be in order. This is especially true if your ball powder load is not providing optimal burn pressure.

94 So I think I mentioned here that I'm giving a handgun to my 18 year old grandson who will take it to college this fall. It's a black powder cap and ball six-shooter. He can shoot it at an outdoor state range just south of the campus of Penn State University.

With the gun he will get from me a set of tools and materials for cleaning it, and he'll clean it at the bench at the range, since he cannot have it in student housing. The gun will be stored in his secure locker at the campus police station.

I watched a YouTube video, a guy named Blackie something, showing what he does when camping in the rough for a week or more. He has a rod, a brush tip, and a slotted tip, plus a beer can full of water, top cut off, and an old tee shirt plus a knife for cutting pieces from the rag.

No Ballistal, no gun oil, no spray cans of anything, but he does have some lube in what looks like a small shoeshine wax tin. After everything is clean and wiped, he loads up some rag pieces with the lube and wipes all including the bores and cylinders. I'll equip the boy with a tin of mink oil for this.

What would you do to field-clean one of these 1858 Colt Navy 36 replica black powder revolvers?

Found the article and the problems are exactly as one would expect. The physics of the round make it extremely hard on the weapon leading to failure. What the article didn't mention was ammunition used. I know the military at one point was going to go with a training round and a war round, with the training round not being as hot as the war shot. If the rifles were failing as mentioned in the article while using the somewhat lighter training round then that portends real problem in combat when using the much stouter war shot.

Big wars, too. Russian "contract-niki" soldiers don't appear to get much, if any, training at all on their AK-74s before going to the front. 117 102 Yup, Whig, all hand loads. The die is a Hornady Match grade, but does not specifically say small base, so probably not. And if PSA gave me a match grade chamber, I’m happy!
The bottom quarter of the case near the head was not scorched, so presumably not in tight contact with the chamber.
A mystery to be solved.

Very possible you have a tight chamber which makes them more prone to stoppage issues when hot and dirty.

A chamber cast would tell you exactly but those are a minor pain in the ass to do if you use Wood's metal to do it. Easier on an AR design than a bolt action though.

I was thinking of the Army procurement turning down the machine gun, the tank suspension and sloped armor. Both which our adversaries bought. Up to the LCS and the F-35 while stopping production on the F-22 and destroying all the manufacturing machinery.

125 And there's last week's cancellation of the M-10 tank project. I have no idea about that one, though it seems to follow the by-now familiar pattern.

Leaving aside the small matter of a vanished industrial base (in many respects), the weapons procurement process in general seems like an emergency.
Posted by: rhomboid at May 04, 2025 07:45 PM (1m82a)

I think the M10 got cancelled because it became a lot less relevant after 24 February 2022. As currently equipped, it just doesn't have the armor to take the hits FPV drones can dish out. Neither does it have the spare volume to pack in jammers, point defense weapons, or anything else to stop massed drone attacks. Aa is, it's already tipping the scales at 38 tons - almost ten tons heavier than an M4 Sherman and just two tons less than the M26 Pershing. It's at the margins for transport via C-130, and there are never enough C-17s to move the big stuff around. I'm surprised it took this long for DOD to pull the plug.

Saw an article on it.
Basically it was too heavy and there now only one cargo plane that can carry it.
To make matters worse, said plane can now only carry one when the original plan was several per plane.
Apparently there was also only 2 or 3 bridges out of 10 or 11 at the base (I think) that could hold the 42 ton M10.
In other words, a clusterfuck.

135 Saw an ad on the internet for these progressive glasses that claimed all kinds of stuff about blue light etc. Don't need them but it got me thinking. What if I had a pair of shooting glasses made that restored the close vision in my dominent eye while leaving the upper part clear for my distance vision. I struggled last week until I brought the target in to 5 yds and my mid range vision kicked in. I have to wear safety glasses anyways and it would be worth whatever it cost as I would use it whenever I shoot. Has anyone shot with progressive lenses?
I see the optomoetrist on the 12th to see whther I need reading glasses so I could ask her about this.
Posted by: sharon(willow's apprentice) at May 04, 2025 07:57 PM (t/2Uw)

Keep in mind that your head and eye placement for a rifle may differ greatly from that for a handgun. With a rifle, I found myself using the upper part of my glasses to look through the sights/optics, especially if you have to get your eyeball really close to the glass (eye relief). That's less of a case when I use handguns.

One thing that should be in the requirements for ANY weapon the military procures is it should be manufacturable without special gear - a typewriter company should be able to produce a firearm, any of the auto manufacturers should be able to produce a tank (heck, they ought to be able to produce most of an aircraft, too), etc. Ships are harder, naturally, but it oughtn't take a massively specialized industry to do a lot of it. The technologists, of course, always say otherwise.

Ironically, one country that might find the M10 useful in its current form is Ukraine. Strip away the strategic deployment requirements the US has, and the M10 might do better in Ukrainian hands than US hands. Ukrainian infrastructure was designed around a load limit of about 50-60 tons, which is well below that of most top line western MBTs sent to Ukraine (72 tons for M1A1, 69 tons for Leopard 2, 74 tons for Challenger 2). The M10's lower weight should allow it to do better off road in the spring and fall mud seasons, too.

Yeah but the problem is that the military really badly wanted a safety. Even Glock tinkered with their 19 to have a traditional safety to meet that demand. (Keep in mind that I am a fan of the G19.). So they went with the M17…oh, wait, the USMC wanted a more compact version for its personnel, especially the embassy guards, so two inches were taken off the front and the M18 was born…

The G19 might have even been rejected at some point for not being compact enough. Either way I think the military got a good gun out of the deal.

151 GWB the concentration in a very capital-intensive activity like ammunition manufacturing is sort of natural. At least seems so to me. There has been some expansion of capacity in the last decade (civilian side).

Meanwhile, I have finally at least made a slow start on reviving my own ammo production after a long hiatus (had a lot in the cans, wasn't shooting a lot).

And on that note, last week I checked ammoseek.com and was pleased to see primer prices (using small pistol as sort of the West Texas Intermediate benchmark price) were almost back to pre-panic levels. Powder seems $$$, just based on a few (HP38, TAC) I use. Of course dinner at a decent but casual restaurant now seems to cost about 2-3X what it did 5 years ago, so there we are.

Call Decot Hy-Wyd sport glasses and let them talk you through your shooting requirements. Measure the distance between your eye and the front sight post(s) of your rifle/pistol. Tell your optometrist what you are looking to do and to prescribe for those measurements. I ordered from Decot because I figured it's worth paying pros to do it right the first time rather than hoping spec savers in the strip mall gets it right.

I really like the versatility, simplicity, effectiveness, and low cost of this approach, vs. a real humidor like the electric ones. Boveda sells heavy-duty ziplocks, which are my "spillover" and temporary storage option.

Posted by: rhomboid at May 04, 2025 08:10 PM (1m82a)

I understand that the proposed "A-16" replacement is an F-16 fitted with a 30mm gun pod on the centerline hardpoint. Problem is that this was tried in Operation Desert Storm by the 174th TFW (NYANG). They ditched the 30mm gun pods after the first week because 1) the F-16As didn't have the electronics to aim them properly, 2) the recoil limited the burst size, 3) F-16s moved too fast to engage ground targets effectively, and 4) F-16s didn't have the loiter time A-10s did to keep pounding the targets over and over again.

179 Yeah, "coolidors" are a thing. Anything that maintains temperature and humidity at desired levels will work.

polynikes, premium cigars are just cured, dried, aged tobacco leaf, with tiny amounts of burmicol (vegetable-based glue). That's it (unless you're talking flavored).

As with wine, quality over time (assuming proper storage) will vary quite a bit. Most cigars are made with tobacco at least 3 years old, and have spent 2-4 months more while being made and then stored in "wicking rooms" before shipment. Properly stored, cigars will last a long time, depending on what you're talking about - initial quality and style, and flavor preservation. As with wines, a small % of cigars will improve with age.

182 I see the optomoetrist on the 12th to see whther I need reading glasses so I could ask her about this.

Reading glasses are cheap: I buy a half dozen in my prescription in one box in a variety of reasonably fashionable styles for about $12 from that online retailer that’s named for the river. They’re plastic but good seeing. They break after a few months, but you just get another from the box. I’m currently on my second box. After my second cataract surgery my distance vision tested out initially at 20/10 which was amazing! Alas, it did not last; a year later I tested out at 20/25 which was disappointing but still legal to drive, even at night. I was offered the option of bifocals that would correct my distance vision to 20/20, and give my +2 diopter correction in the lower lune. Sounds good, but you’re talking prescription glasses with prices in the hundreds of dollars range, not the $2 range of my current readers. I thought about it, and I’m not hurting for money (my BIL does this with his glasses, but he is still working in an office - he’s an architect - and he needs to see plans then look at the work site on occasion, in rapid succession), but I declined.

186 Do I need to enter a different ballistic coefficient than what is published?

I have a Nikon Monarch scope, which is a Ballistic Drop Compensator type. I use a chronograph to get the velocity of my loads. I average a minimum sample of 15 shots. I have pretty good consistency of muzzle velocity, and a bullet for which ballistic coefficient is published to 3 digits. I use Nikon's SpotOn app on my phone to generate a rectical / yardage plot. Out to 400 yards, the drop is exactly as predicted, but beyond, the drop is far more than predicted. At 600 yards I am off the paper, and at 700, off of the board. Left/right variation at those ranges is still just an inch or two, so I know I am holding well enough. Should I just enter a lower Ballistic coefficint than is published for the bullet and press on with life? Or send my chronograph in for callibration? Or beat my head against the wall harder?

Any advice, no matter how fringe, I will be grateful for because I need to get my thinking out of the box.

187 Weasel, sounds good. I have just one lonely digital hygrometer, that I usually keep in my biggest tupperdor. Though lately I've been keeping it in my "dry box", a Rocky Patel box where I put a stick 1-2 days before burning to reduce humidification a bit. I'm sort of standardized on 69% now, though I keep seeing/hearing about people switching to 65% and liking it (better flavor performance). So I'll probably stick with 69%, and just dry-box when I remember.

Rhomboid, I think what you saw was the 127th Wing of the MI ANG switching from the A-10 to the F-15EX. PDT was at Selfridge ANGB for the announcement. So, just a single unit, not a fleet wide replacement.

194 polynikes premium cigars are very simple, my impression is commercial cigarettes have lots 'o chemicals added.

One cigar maker called one of their releases "organic" (their agriculture satisfied USDA requirements), but they stopped when the Nanny State Knights of Nii grumbled about it. Hilarious really. Because those cigars were every bit as organic as the priciest tomato at Whole Paychecks.

196 The cheap readers don;t work because I had Toric surgery (I paid extra)which corrected the astigmatism as well as the cataracts. One eye is distance, my dominant right eye, the left is midrange for computer and Ipad. If I need readers, they will be different prescription for each eye so I will need real half glasses for very close. The problem I had sighting was I could either see the target or the sight on the gun but not both. With Ed's help i worked it out somewhat but what reeally helped was bringing the target closer so my midrange eye worked. My vision is insanely better so I have no complaints. I really need a few more sessions at the range.

199 Yep Weasel Cubans generally are said to be best in low 70s%, higher than "new world" (love that) sticks.

Those of us without lucrative organic tree farms rarely get actual Cubans.

Back last fall I sort of accidentally bought some while trying to pick up some mild sticks for a couple of the women on the boat we chartered in the Leewards. They said they wanted to try a cigar, got the mildest ones I could find in the store in St Barts. Cigar intro session never happened. Forgot they were Cubans, no issue as there was really no customs process on return to FL.

Used to pick up Cubans all the time on work travel, from duty free shops (or the UN commissary in Rome, great prices) back in the day. Gifted most to a BIL and one work acquaintance whose name all here would know.

I doubt it. The F-15EX is meant as an AMRAAM missile truck first, strike platform second. Each F-15EX can carry twenty AMRAAMs. That's the same loadout for five F-15Cs in the late 1990s. This works only if you have LOTS of AMRAAMs to shoot at the other guy, though.

202 A-10s are cool, and have proven themselves in combat. I wish they could just keep them going like the B-52. I understand the Air Force just doesn’t like the mission of ground support, as much as flying high and fast to intercept the bad guys in the air, or such like derringer do. So why not let the Army fly them? Inter service rivalry, of course. Some one needs to fly some platform to do the job, I wish the people in charge would come up with a responsible, mature solution and see it through, but it’s the government, even the armed forces are subject to the same shortsidedness, nay, the graft and corruption we’re seeing via DOGE, so I am not holding my breath.

208 As much as I admire the old Warthog, I think it's now obsolete if it encounters modern air defense systems.

Pointing at the war in Ukraine, for all practical purposes, aircraft don't cross over the front line. The Russians release their FAB glide bombs something like twenty miles behind the front line. Ukrainian F16s are used only to chase missiles and drones, deep in friendly territory.

Attempting to loiter over the battle area, looking for ground targets, would be suicidal.

So, yeah, I'm still eyeing the real Shockwave - in 12ga (because I have some low recoil rounds, and I bet the shorties would also work in a Mossberg) or maybe 20ga. Along with a handful of other guns that it would be nice to have the money for.

That's because neither the Ukrainians nor the Russians have ever attempted a serious, enduring offensive SEAD/DEAD campaign to take down the other guy's air defense network. The USAF's primary conventional strike mission in the first days of a war is SEAD/DEAD. Just like what happened in Operation Linebacker II and Operation Desert Storm.

The USAF allowed the Army to have helicopters. At the time, helicopters were seen as a liaison or observation aircraft replacing Piper Cub type aircraft used for that purpose in WWII. Only the USAF, USN, and USMC could operate armed fixed wing aircraft. Army fixed wing aircraft could only be minimally armed (OV-10 Bronco, OV-1 Mohawk).

Theoretically, yes. But more importantly, you'd have to have Congress back up that change by moving $$ around to support the changes (or eliminate funding to those systems that didn't make the cut). Remember, the SECDEF (a USAF partisan) tried to kill the USN's carriers in favor of the B-36 in 1948, depriving the USN and USMC of a reason to operate fixed wing aircraft (in violation of the Key West Agreement), which led to the "Revolt of the Admirals." That caused a huge political mess that downgraded USN readiness in favor of the B-36. But when Korea broke out, the USAF refused to commit its B-36 force because it meant risking the only planes capable of delivering nuclear bombs. That was enough for Truman to can the SECDEF and authorize the Forrestal class carriers.

To answer my own question: not capable of being shoulder-fired, therefore not a "shotgun" according to the ATF. Long enough that it doesn't count as a "short-barreled shotgun" or an "any other weapon". Not a "pistol", either, as it is smoothbore and not designed to be fired with one hand.

The National Firearms Act said something about shotguns being illegal if they were "cut down" (barrel or stock). And it evidently defined a proper shotgun as having a certain barrel length (18"). And then it regulated "short-barreled rifles."

So, someone figured out that if you purposely built a gun under 16" barrel length without a rifled barrel, it didn't qualify as a shotgun, or "cut down" and it obviously wasn't a rifle... so you got the thing-without-a-name. Because gov't regulation said so.

You're asking a lot for Congress to behave like the responsible adults in the room. Congress ultimately has to codify the changes in the defense budgets it's supposed to pass annually.

Seems that would be a great use case for drones, or something.

250 Yeah the Army is dumb, too. They are all government workers, after all. Hasn’t always been this way, but you can look at a lot of early mistakes by the North in the War Between the States due to the Northern Army leadership being ossified. South made a lot of mistakes too, like fighting in the first place. But their mistakes early on were more hot headedness (firing on Ft. Sumter?) not from ossification.

251 Y'all might remember I bought a Charles Daly version... and it's in a box at the back of the closet because it wouldn't feed, and the company's fix just broke after the first few shots, again. Very disappoint.

So, yeah, I'm still eyeing the real Shockwave - in 12ga (because I have some low recoil rounds, and I bet the shorties would also work in a Mossberg) or maybe 20ga. Along with a handful of other guns that it would be nice to have the money for.
Posted by: GWB

The newest Shockwaves are designed to handle the shorties.
Older ones needed an adapter.

258 As for suppressing anti-aircraft systems, what happens if you run out of airplanes before the other guy runs out of missiles? I'm sure both sides have crunched the numbers, and didn't like the answer the got.
Posted by: Idaho Spudboy at May 04, 2025 09:24 PM (yko4N)

Neither the Ukrainians nor the Russians have the planes, electronics, weapons, or the training to do SEAD/DEAD like the USAF does. The Russians did SEAD only in the early days of the war just for key targets (EX: Hostamel airport). They never did train like the USAF did for its "Wild Weasel" mission. The USAF has/had entire squadrons and fighter wings dedicated to the "Wild Weasel" mission to kill air defenses.

259 My Charles Daly shotgun has worked fine for me: no problem feeding. I figure the wrought iron parts will wear out sooner rather than later, but I’m not using it for skeet shooting, just home defense. Won’t go through my walls and enter the house down the way (I live in the country). Handgun nearest to hand is a loaded J-frame S&W revolver in .357 magnum. That will do job, if needed.

270 Once the Civil War became total war the North was destined to win. But were the South man for man better fighters? I think that is an open question.

Another way to say it is if the South had been equal military to the North; could they have won?

Posted by: dudley at May 04, 2025 09:45 PM (r2ymA)

271 Good God, is the U.S. military a disaster. Just reading some of the recent comments..

The whole damn thing needs a large-scale teardown. It’s far off from its original purpose of defending America. And it’s mostly good at wasting money and completely unprepared for the sort of conflict it is arming up for.

“Let’s base all of our procurement off an obsolete, hypothetical war with Russia. Then proceed to ignore actual truths about warfare in 2025, revealed by our idiotic proxy war with Russia.”

Posted by: dudley at May 04, 2025 09:45 PM (r2ymA)

"War is politics by other means"
Would the South have been willing to crush the Northern armies, drive them to the Canadian border, and then occupy the North for ten years? Or, having driven the Northern forces off Southern soil, would the Confederate States have called it good and left the North to try again later?

274 Yesterday my Hammer Knife mower spun under power for the first time in decades. I repowered it with a 420cc motor that weighs about a third what the Wisconsin does.

It's kind of terrifying. Whirling knives of death. And has some serious rotational inertia.

I can't wait to put it to some tall grass and undergrowth.

278 With the right intervention the South could win handily. Read Harry Turtledove’s “The Guns of the South”. Time-traveling Afrikaners supply Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia with AK-47s and sufficient ammunition to win the war in a rout. The scene of a dejected Lincoln offering surrender terms to Lee was very sad. The interesting point is when the Southerners realize their aims and the time-traveling Afrikaners aren’t one and the same. Turtledove revisits the question of a surviving Confederacy in a later series “Southern Victory”. In this series the difference was the North _not_ finding certain Southern battle plans wrapped around some cigars. Anyway, the Southern victory leads to lot of problems all around circa the time of the Great War. Think about a divided America, with the South siding with Britain and the North siding with Germany (Canada invades the North!). Or how about a communist revolution in the South led by blacks!
