Don't We Have More Important Things Going On? Stop The Nanny State Bullsh*t!

I like Youngkin. I think he is a good governor, and he certainly would make an interesting candidate for national office.

But this sort of arrant nonsense makes me think he is far less serious than I had assumed and hoped.

GOP Gov Signs Law That Would Set Daily Time Limit For Kids On Social Media

Republican Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin signed a bill into law on Friday to limit the social media use of minors under the age of 16 to one hour per day.

The Consumer Data Protection Act, supported by both Republican and Democrat state lawmakers, will require social media platforms, like Facebook and Instagram, to limit minors’ time on such platforms.

Platforms will use “neutral age screen mechanisms” to determine the age of users and then limit their screen-time accordingly, Wavy.com reported. Parents, per the law, will be required to give “verifiable” consent if they want their child’s time on such apps increased or decreased.

First of all, it is almost certainly an unworkable restriction. Any kid on social media is probably more expert than his parents, and can avoid these restrictions with ease.

Second, making social media platforms do the work that parents seem unwilling to do is allowing them to avoid responsibility for their own children. The nanny-statism of this bill is deeply troubling.

Third, anything that receives bipartisan support should be immediately suspect. The Democrat party has an unblemished record of destruction, and anything they want is probably a bad thing. Undermining the family by ceding control to the social media companies is another step in the destruction of the traditional family structure, even if on the face of this is parental control. But it is a step away from allowing families to decide what is best for their children, and a step toward government deciding that!

Do I think that children should have access to social media? Absolutely not. I think it has a corrosive and destructive influence on our culture, and all thinking people should fight against its influence on our children.

Do I think that government should restrict access to social media? No.

Maybe three generations of the destruction of the family by both the Democrat party and its enablers in the Republican party has done the lion's share of the damage. It is incumbent upon us to recover the concept that parents know best, that the family unit is the core of our culture, that government (and its corporate surrogates) should simply stay out of it and let us raise our children as we see fit.

9 Hard for kids to be on social media if the y don’t have a smartphone and their computer access is limited to doing their schoolwork in the living room.

Of course, once they are in high school things change. But if they have been warned and shown examples of the potential evil of living your life to post on the internet, they may have a chance.

14 I teach high schoolers. Most of them are total zombies now thanks to Smartphones (most were born 2006-200. Libertarian arguments are moot in this area, because they presume rational individuals making rational choices, and these kids were not rational yet whenever they were given a phone and allowed to become addicted to it. Short of not giving your kid anything but a flip phone or one of those phones designed to only allowing texting and emergency apps, I don't think much of the "let parents decide" argument either. If you give a kid a smartphone, they will very soon figure out how to bypass any parental guardrails to find weird porn or social media or whatever other brainrot their peers show them. And we live in a society that makes it harder and harder to exist without a smartphone, thanks to QR codes and Authenticator apps.

In such a situation, you either crack down hard on the Technologists, or you crack down on kids' access to technology. The Trump coalition has a strong Tech/Crypto/AI component to it. So trying to stop the technology isn't going to fly, if it ever was feasible in the first place. So the only solution is to make it annoying for companies to market to kids.

16 Kids are regulated; they can't go into bars, strip clubs or various other venues. The time regulation is stupid but what adult content is should be established and eliminated from phones that children are allowed to possess.

Just slap some religious morality bs on it and they'll vote for more government.

And they'll still call themselves conservative.

OTOH, there are shitty parents who'd let their kids drink whisky and smoke if it wasn't illegal.

Also, it's fine to say that you are raising your kids right, and you aren't zombies. Fair enough. There are plenty of Gen Z kids I meet who aren't techno-zombies. But this then leads to what we do with the all zombies who have no skills and no attention span thanks to their crippling phone addictions. In an actual Libertarian society they'd eventually have to shape up or starve, but we do not live in such a society. It's like Ace wonders about all the mentally ill Karens. Do they just become "wards of the state"? In such a scenario I am happy to regulate the hell out of tech companies marketing to kids until most decide the cost of endless court battles is not worth the bother.

30 I kind of like this. Especially on a state level. If its too hard for TicTok et al to comply maybe they'll just block their app in VA and the young adults will also be saved from SM for a bit.

To protect kids they should outlaw smart phones in school. If the parents want to be able to call or text their kid make them buy a flip phone that can only call or text. Hopefully a good # parents would then get the idea and not get their kids a smart phone as well.

35 The blackpilling on this is wonderful, it reminds me of the eternal wrangle over the budget that "we can't reduce spending because the only area to cut is Social Security and regulations that make us safer and healthier!" and year after year, we get poorer, the debt got larger, and we got sicker and medical care got worse. And then someone asked, "why can't we stop all the stealing as a first step"

The kids being stuck and manipulated by social media is real, and there is the wrangle between "control the technology" and "control the children" and no one is focusing on the fact that there are actual PREDATORS out there working to manipulate and addict kids, and maybe we should be focusing on the predators instead.

I graduated HS in 1994. I remember when the TI-82 calculator came out and kids were programming the answers to math tests into them. When teachers found out, they implemented a rule before every test that we had to wipe the memory of the calculator before the test.

I also remember that while teachers liked the technology, they hated that kids were not actually learning the principles of how to complete the math problems, but just learning how to program their calculators to give them the correct answers to certain math problems.

I went to high school in the late 1980s to early 1990s. One of my greatest accomplishments was never getting my Walkman confiscated, ever. If it came out or was known about, it would have been confiscated for the year and my parents would not intervene to get it back (which they could have done). But this is back in the day when discipline existed in schools.

The one I taught in had an assistant principal who was in it to get better retirement pay. He more or less was there to hand out lollipops to the kids and to berate the teachers trying to apply discipline in their classes.

53 Willowed but I find the Shroud of Turin fascinating. I’m agnostic and don’t have a strong opinion on its authenticity. But it seems certainly possible it’s authentic, or at least is a 2000 year old burial shroud of a crucified man.

It’s also fascinating because most of the “research” of the past 50 years on the shroud seems obviously designed to debunk it. Vague, shady research into carbon dating where they refuse to release raw data, etc. Sound familiar?

The skeptics claim it was painted or created in the 13th century. Yet nobody — even with 21st century tech — has been able to recreate it, nor even definitely say how it was done. Very very interesting.

74 Youngkin is an odd duck. He seems to be skating on the knife's edge between MAGA and Bush/Rove entities in Virginia. Much of the Virginia GOP is run by Bush/Rove holdovers. During his campaigns, Youngkin never mentioned the #2A without mentioning hunting. Of course, one has nothing to do with the other. He has vetoed all of the anti-#2A bills Dems have passed but he has allowed AG Miyares to defend previously-passed unconstitutional #2A bills. A problem with politicians is they think government "fixes problems" when in fact government causes most of the problems they try to fix. We need a lot less government and bill is a prime example of why we need less government. This bill will get struck down in short order by courts. Youngkin may run for Senate but I don't see him on a national ticket as he is quite milquetoast. Virginia is mostly a purple state now and that's one reason we left. The November election will be a defining moment for Virginia. Somehow the Dems will have to paint Winsome Sears as a racist, white supremacist. If they do so, the state will lurch blue and Virginia will become Southern Maryland.

118 Social media is poison. It convinced the user they are popular and that others care what they think or say or do. It teaches selfishness and narcissism. It teaches kids to whip out their phones and record someone being bullied or beaten or harassed rather than stand up and say “this isn’t right.”

Even among my Gen X friends, I’ve had to point out to my kids the “take a picture first” rather than be on the moment attitude.

How many times do you see adults, of all ages, posting on the internet or taking selfies while sitting across the table from a friend or loved one? How many times do you see young adults go an entire meal having hardly acknowledged their date?

It’s easy to point out and mock.

My HS guidance counselor was awesome. Devout Catholic lady with six kids whose husband decided he wanted more from life than a big family in a small town. He left and never came back. The kids never saw him again but there was never a divorce. She didn't just counsel kids, she talked to their parents and counseled them too. More than one substandard parent raised their game because that lady knew....Most kids act up because parents allow it. Maybe because they aren't paying attention, maybe because they pay too much attention, and sometimes because the attention they give is toxic. She also knew a bad seed when see saw it standing in her office. She handed one kid over to the cops and told him, " I tried to help you but you didn't want that help. Now you have to live with the consequences. I will pray for you."

I'm reluctant to address anything in a way that makes it personal, but there are a number of scientific papers exploring the topic. Search for "tattoos and trauma" or similar.

What was it? Certain subjects taboo before 9pm.

Anywho, totally impossible these days what with all the open media.

Maybe a rating system where you could set the child's phone and computer to block any and all of those channels and ads.

Not sure how possible that is. Buuuuut, that wouldn't block anyone who didn't want to be blocked and give parents the ability to control, at least, at home what their kiddos see.

Couple of fun facts....
1) I don't have trauma. I had a navel ring because I wanted one
2) Hubbymayhem and I got tattoos as our wedding gift to one another. Permanent artwork as a symbol of permanent vows kinda thing. No one sees my ink except Hubbymayhem. His is visible and he got a second one as a memorial for my mom. Again, not about trauma or social class. Just a personal preference.

I truly do not understand why people here on this smart military blog insist that any woman who has ink is either trash, a fucked up mess, or both. It is baffling.

Again, I am reluctant to make anything personal, and I won't.

I will say that it's always worth remembering that general statements and stereotypes are the way humans understand topics for a reason. Are there outliers? Yes. Can things that don't adhere to the norm exist? Absolutely.

That decent, normal outlier people might accidentally get hung up in assumptions of strangers basing opinions on true stereotypes is a topic that has been discussed in broader society for decades now, but it certainly happens.

An interesting related topic for us old folks:

Knowing this fact now, what should we teach our daughters?

214 Parents either care or they don't. Neighbor buys his girlfriend's daughter an iPhone and within months she's cutting herself at age 11. I say, she didn't think of that herself -- she's getting that from the iPhone. He acts interested but doesn't do anything. Fast-forward, she is briefly institutionalized at a respected NoVa facility. They give her drugs. And she's pulled out of school several times a week for a woke therapist to talk to her. All of this is paid for through immigrant services. Her school performance nose-dives. Her mother discovers she's sending naughty photos of herself to her 18-year-old online boyfriend in PA and calls the cops on her. What can they do? And they are both illegal. She starts getting into fights -- and hurts a girl and parents take her to court. She relocates to live with her mother's boyfriend to get to a new school system. School sends her home to school remotely because they can't deal with her threatening to hurt herself. It's an effing mess.
I can't count the times we've offered to tutor her and tell our neighbor to cut the damn internet and smash the iPhone. It never had to be like this.

Tattoos as a window to the psyche:
How talking about skin art can inform psychiatric practice

OK, good title, it’s implied intent to be objective and informative. But in the middle of the first paragraph it’s true objective is stated:

- “This paper aims to review the more recent epidemiology of tattoos in Western culture in order to establish that tattooing has become a mainstream phenomenon.”
---

Another govt step toward re-defining our society.

217 - “This paper aims to review the more recent epidemiology of tattoos in Western culture in order to establish that tattooing has become a mainstream phenomenon.”

further into the paper:

"A more recent Harris poll of 2225 United States respondents performed in 2015 found that 29% of Americans had at least one tattoo, an increase from 14% in 2008 and 21% in 2012[4]. Tattoos were slightly more common among United States women (31%) than men (27%). Younger respondents were more likely to have tattoos, with nearly half (47%) of those 18-35 years old reporting that they had a tattoo. Regret about having a tattoo was reported in 23% of respondents, an increase from 14%-17% in previous years."
-----------

None of these percentages approaches mainstream.
