Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | The Ace of Spades Pet Thread![]() Good afternoon and welcome to the almost world famous Ace of Spades Pet Thread TM. The answer is "Yes". Today's opener photo is a rerun. But, it is classy. And you know the Pet Morons are classy. Your's truly is sitting in for the lovely and talented KT. Let's take a look at the world of animals. Please leave the current events and politics out at the curb. Or you might find yourself at the nearest shelter. ![]() Meet our one-year-old Australian Cattle Dog mix (Red Heeler variety) who was named Piper by our granddaughters. She came to us at three months of age after having been found abandoned at about 6 weeks old on the nearby Navaho Reservation in Utah. A rescue group called Underdogs took her in, fostered her and rehabbed her for several weeks. She has fit in well with our senior citizen Australian Shepherd Buckley who showed up on the Pet Thread some years ago. They spend a lot of time rough housing and play fighting. He teaches her all his old bad habits and she teaches him a few new ones of her own. All in all a positive lift for the old boy. She stands about 16 inches at the shoulder and weighs about 50 lbs. She has freakishly long legs. She is not the smartest dog I've ever had but the d'awwww cuteness factor is off the charts. Who's a good girl? regards, muldoon ![]() Good looking pup Muldoon. That dog certainly hit the lottery finding you! Good luck with your pair of pups. After Easter supper, sonM tried to lay down on the couch. He was immediately joined by (left to right) Daughter & Son-in-Law's main dog Chowie, our fine Malinois Daisy, SonM's auxiliary dog Bandit, and SonM's primary dog the enormous Jarl. Not shown: daughter & s-i-l's auxiliary dog Maya. Very restful. ![]() Looks really relaxing after a wonderful Easter dinner. Thanks for sharing. Hi KT: Long-time semi-Lurker Lisan here. Here are pictures of Billy the Dog, an Australian Kelpie mix; Bella, the Tortie cat; and Sophia, a very ancient Tabby. I brought all three animals home after my aunt passed away and no one could take them. Originally, I was taking only the two cats, but Plan A for the dog fell through and I was Plan B. Since Billy is a very good dog, and especially good around cats, it wasn’t stretch to include him as part of the pet horde. He is the most well-behaved dog-polite, good on a leash and incredibly, he never barks. The puzzle with him is that he has none of the herding dog breed characteristics, and while he looks like he has some husky or malamute in him, he doesn’t act like it. Will just be thankful he is such a well-behaved little guy, and do a DNA test at some point to confirm his breed. Bella is about 14 years old, she was exclusively an outdoor cat, but not feral. She is adapting well to being indoor only, meaning she isn’t complaining with howling cat noise or violence. She is actually a quiet cat, very amenable to being handled and petted-I think she is secretly happy to be warm and safe inside. We are letting her set the pace for ratcheting down her flight response, and she is slowly exploring beyond the safe places she has picked in the house. Sophia is confirmed at 22 years old, which is the oldest cat I have ever had. Apparently, she was also an outdoor only cat, brought inside to die when she began to look frail—this was an unknown number of years ago, and she is still hanging on. She is creaky, cranky, and old-thin, but moves around well from nap spot to nap spot, almost trotting when food is on offer. We are treating her for the typical old cat problems, namely hyperthyroidism (medicated), kidney failure (subQ fluids), with her diabetes testing still inconclusive. I know she is on borrowed time but I am terribly happy we could give her a final landing place that is peaceful and quiet and safe. Thanks for all you do for the Ace of Spades weekend edition. ![]() ![]() ![]() Well that wraps up another Pet Thread. Hopefully your regular host KT will be back next week. Hoping you a wonderful week ahead. Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

Last week, Diana injured herself at the National Specialty and had to be pulled from competition. We took her to the doggie chiropractor yesterday for an adjustment and evaluation. The vet agreed that there was no further point in cossetting her, that we may as well let her be a dog, run around and jump up on the bed. She didn't have a good answer to why Diana kept losing muscle tone. We may get an MRI done. Or maybe Diana is just very slow maturing. That afternoon we took Rosalind to our regular vet for shots. Ros looks more substantial than Diana, indeed fat. But, amazingly, the two sisters weigh within a pound of each other. Posted by: Hadrian the Seventh at May 03, 2025 03:17 PM (QnmlO) 10

When Daisy's "cousins" come to visit, Ony the old black Kitty likes to hide someplace inaccessible to them. We managed to get her to quit hiding in the catbox. Yuck. We put her on the bed and shut the bedroom door to keep the dogs out.
Recently, Daughter brought us a fuzzy little gingerbread-looking house her cats don't use, and Ony hides there, and has taken to it so well she will sleep there all night. When she's not at the foot of our bed. Posted by: mindful webworker - cat wanted equal time at May 03, 2025 03:29 PM (7URu6) 20

Love the picture of Sophia. We had one tabby, Pepper, who died just short of 22. We found her mewing on the rear axle of my Bonneville one late afternoon as I was preparing for a trip. She was probably 6 weeks at the time.
We have had a similar experience with Mr Grey, who we brought in before it got really cold. He would attempt to come inside on several occasions, and actually made it in sometimes but just by the front door, now seems quite accustomed to being inside and only old Oscar (14), who was the alpha cat and still believes to be it, howls when he sees Mr Grey. Oscar has been deaf for a while so he howls really loud! I wonder if he hears himself internally? Posted by: Ciampino - Bailey the cat woke me up at May 03, 2025 03:57 PM (sPQoU) 34

My two are determined to get most of their water from the bathroom sink or kitchen sink tap. They have a fresh-water fountain, the kind you plug in and the water recirculates through a filter, and you refill the reservoir. I've seen them both using it. Yet they both zip into the bathroom after me, especially if they hear me turn on the tap, and Stirling chirps and hints at me to turn it on when I'm in the kitchen.
I wouldn't mind. But when I have my house and have to pay for water, I don't want my bill soaring because they have their fixed notions. Is there any way to extinguish this behavior, other than cutting them off from the taps completely? Or will running the water five or ten extra minutes a day be fairly inexpensive as long as I don't live in the desert? Wolfus @40-I have a cat that likes drinking from the kitchen faucet. I usually let it run a trickle stream for about 5 minutes, then shut it off, especially if the kitty has stopped drinking. I don’t have a cat fountain like you, and have thought about getting one but really, just doing the faucet for a few minutes works. Guessing this may add a gallon a day or less-a drop in a bucket cost-wise compared to yard watering.

Siberian had that water source for most of his life (until the fountain, which he liked) and lived to be 14. I just found a clean plastic bowl and filled it with water for them. We'll see if they use it. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at May 03, 2025 04:56 PM (omVj0) 77
This yard is full of feral cats. Neighbor feeds them, names them. To me they are all called Kitty, Puss or Mauser (mouser). Has had many "fixed" to reduce kitten factories .

Fanny, the Scottish Fold will be 14 this week. She was the tiniest kitten. I've always been afraid she'd get hurt by a bigger animal.
Jake had a visit to the vet, after waking me up every hour, from 3-6. He looked like he pooped, but when I checked in the daylight, there was nothing. X-ray showed nothing but gas and I guess the attention did him good. No further issues. Posted by: Notsothoreau at May 03, 2025 05:00 PM (cvWHI) 79
My cat is a natural hunter, mice and bugs and anything that moves are living on borrowed time.

Posted by: EP at May 03, 2025 *** Stirling earned his keep and more his very first summer, spotting wasps that had gotten into my place before I saw them. I learned quickly that if he was starting intently over my head, I should get up and look. That summer I killed three of the little bastards and gave Stirling kitty treats and petting each time. Little Dagny is fascinated by any kind of bugs too, but Stirling usually muscles her aside and traps whatever it is. believe kidney failure in cats is related to their high protein diet. This is probably the most common cause of death for old domestic cats. You can correct me if I'm wrong.
Posted by: Ciampino - CTNIP - it's like snow for cats at May 03, 2025 04:51 PM (sPQoU) A well cared for cat will live for around 15 years. Cats are amazingly self-sufficient. Don't think diet has much to do with it, unless you are feeling them total garbage. Posted by: EP at May 03, 2025 05:23 PM (r2ymA) 82

Posted by: EP at May 03, 2025 *** I've always given my cats a mix of wet canned food, Friskies or similar, and a good quality dry like Purina One. Big Arizona required Rx food in his later years, the Hill's Science Diet, and Chekov needed an Rx food too. But most of them did fine on good-quality commercial chow. Walker Percy was a great writer.
He won some award for "The Moviegoer." I love his Dilogy? "Love in the Ruins..." and "The Thantos Syndrome." But don't forget "Lost in the Cosmos: the last self help book." Posted by: no one of any consequence at May 03, 2025 05:35 PM (ZmEVT) 85
