First World Problems...

ManDate25.jpg

What's that? Oh...the manufacturing date of my hot water heater. It's a well-regarded company, and it seems to have done a good job over the eight years and two months of its installed life.

What a wild coincidence though...it has an eight-year warranty!

Can you guess what the photo below the fold is?

waterfail25.jpg

Yup! And all of this happened quite suddenly. Almost a planned obsolescence!

How dare they build a machine that provides me with copious quantities of hot water without any expectation of preventive maintenance, and have it last eight years through hard use!

Bull's eye.

Sacrificial anodes are cheap (~$25) and take about 10 minutes to change out. If you lack headroom above the water heater, buy a segmented sacrificial anode (looks like a string of sausages). If you have trouble removing the plug (which is common for the first time), either use a breaker bar and a cheater bar - i.e., a pipe - on it, or an impact driver. In any case be sure to use a 6-point socket, not a 12-point one, which can slip and round the edges of the plug.

Nothing to it.

24 There's a debate in hot water heater/plumber circles about whether or not it's worth the time and effort to do the drain 'n purge thing vs. just biting the bullet and buying a new H2O heater every "X" number of years.

The claim:
The drain 'n purge doesn't get the nasty shit on the bottom of the tank anyway... so you're not even pushing back the inevitable.

Thoughts...

We're on our second one in 14 years.... and it's never been purged. First one was... twice and it didn't last more than 7-8 years. FWIW our water is full of limestone.

31 I bought a new house with a pretty new central a/c system. Starts having problems, not even five years old yet. I call the company that installed it, schedule an appt. They come out, it’s a cracked plastic drain pan, want $3000 to fix.

“But it has a 10 year warranty.”

Only for the original owner. Since he sold the house to me it became a 5 year warranty, and by this time was about a week past 5 years.

I know enough about HVAC to know the explanation I got makes no sense. Call someone else. They take a look, turns out it was installed wrong. Drain pan is fine. And if it needed to be replaced it would only be a few hundred dollars. Fixed for less than $100.

A lot of companies are just trying to screw you these days.

They did that in most of the homes in Memphis, TN. Ours was up there. One winter, over the holidays, when a lot of people were out of town the area suffered through a week of bitterly cold temperatures. Like single digits. Many of those hot water heaters in attic spaces had pipes burst. Lots of photos of interior staircases covered in ice. Because people shut off their HVAC systems.... to save money.

This is why a basement is one of the best things a house can have. Otherwise you’re shoving HVAC stuff into closets and water heaters into attics.

I used to drain/flush ours annually, but I don't much crap coming out, so I think I'm going to pass on doing this henceforth.

One thing I do check annually is the temperature/pressure relief valve. Ours gets crapped up with limescale, and so sticks open or closed, but I find that treating it with dilute HCl dissolves the limescale, and makes it as good as new.

Our water heater is now 20 years old, and knock on wood, will carry on for longer.

58 Our last water heater in the old house lasted twenty years. Didn't flush it or swap out any thingamadammit. Just let it sit there and do it's job. Although we did have to use a ratchet strap to keep it upright after the floor underneath it started rotting away. That wasn't caused by the water heater. It was a small leak in the tub/shower in the bathroom on the other side of the wall next to the WH. We didn't know that leak existed until the water heater nearly fell thru the floor. It was balanced (almost) on two floor joists. We just lifted it put down a slab of hard plastic that spanned the joists and used a ratchet strap to keep it upright. We were still debating how to fix that floor when we just said fuck it and put in a manufactured home that doesn't have any of the structural problems the old house had. It came with a new water heater so the old one went to the metal scrap yard sans ratchet strap.

Screwdrivers wear out. Now a flat-blade screwdriver tip can be re-shaped on a bench grinder and made like new again, but that's impossible with Phillips. Pro tip: the tip of a flat screwdriver blade should not be "flat" with parallel straight faces; each face should be very slightly convex as viewed end-on, so the tip is thickest in the middle, and tapers gently towards the end. That makes the screwdriver grip on the flanks, and not merely on the corners, and makes for a much more secure grip on the screw.

76 My dad built the house we lived in. The floor was cement slab. Dad put a drain in the living room floor and then they put peel and stick tile over it. One morning we awoke to find a couple of inches of water on the floor. The water valve on the water heater got stuck open and water kept running in even though it was full. With no room inside the tank and plenty of pressure being applied by the water, a pop off valve... Popped. All water in the tank plus the water going into the tank was on the floor in the great room style living room/kitchen, in the hall way, the bathroom, and in my bedroom which was next to the kitchen. Mom and Dad were using push brooms to push the water toward the front door and outside. Dad had shut off the water first thing. Dad finally had enough and broke the tile over the drain to let the water run out. They just pushed water to the drain. Then mop the floor and turn on fans to dry everything out quickly. Mom was pissed off about the broken tile until dad got a big area rug to cover it up.

Something else that needs to be mentioned / told to people that might not know it:

If your unit is on the ground and has a condensate pump to move the water to a drain or a pipe behind the washing machine or similar, pour bleach into it each month to keep algae growth down. Routinely cycle it and make sure it works. If you don't you'll come home one day and that room (and maybe more) will be flooded.

They are hybrids, so the males are all sterile until F4 at the earliest and that is rare. Usually they can’t breed until the F5-F6 level. Mine are also neutered to avoid marking. I got them from a good Savannah Cat breeder.

No, I usually stop at stop signs, even if the only reason for their existence is to make revenue for the county. Well, especially those. I stop at some unsigned intersections, too, if I think the view of of possible cross-traffic is impaired.

92 >> An American will typically stop and look, even though the roads are absolutely deserted, then proceed.

This has not been my experience. People just run stop signs and lights all the time here. Even during the day with a fair amount of traffic. It’s downright dangerous.

But AOP is correct. If you sit at a light through a full cycle (3 mins or so) and your lane isn’t getting signaled for some reason, just go when there’s nobody around.

They shed as much as any other cat does, so yes. 😂. They do have a different dander so a lot of people who are allergic to cats normally aren’t to them. They are strictly indoor. They do not have a homing beacon like a domestic cat, they will not come back. They are also very smart, like furry 2 year olds and they can be destructive. They are a lot of cat, if you want a Savannah personality and none of the destructive, they are too smart for their own good part, get an SBT Savannah from a solid breeder.

102 I speak from a lifetime of experience, but there’s the rub, my experience is in the past. Drivers these days hardly put on turn signals. My understanding of French drivers comes from a frank conversation with a college French professor. The conversation (in French, of course) dwelled with her frustration that Americans would always stop at a deserted stop sign out in the country. She explained that the natural thing to do was run through them. That’s the way they did it in her home, France. She was quite the character, always dressed in tiger striped apparel, or the like. So maybe it was just her, but I believed her about the French attitude at crossroads.

Do dish washers even have a float? I thought they just took in a small amount of very hot water, and splashed it around inside? Laundry washing machines don't have a float. They have a diaphragm pressure sensor, with the diaphragm mounted well above the drum, and connected to the bottom of the drum by a rubber tube. As water rises in the drum, it also rises in the rubber tube, compressing the air above it, which actuates the diaphragm, that work a switch to control the incoming water valves.

My tankless, inline hot water heater which I am not a fan of died during the lockdown. I bought this place a spec home so everything was new and I never needed a plumber until then. Trying to find a plumber during the lockdown was fun.

Finally found one and he confirmed that I was a few months out of warranty. He said the hell with that and called the company and argued with them until they broke down and gave me a new one for free, just had to pay for the install.

Now that's a good plumber.

Thank you! All of these questions come from a goofy confab with my daughter. She asked if we would get another house cat after our current feline overlord shuffles off the mortal coil. I said only if it is big enough to scare visitors, has short hair, doesn't shed, and won't eat my grandkids.

It’s fine! I would not get F2 Savannahs with your list. All cats shed, of course, but Savannahs aren’t cuddly and are really energetic. Oriental shorthairs and Egyptian Maus are family friendly, fun cats who cuddle. Maus are very cool cats, if you want an actual breed.

149 you want a large, mostly hypoallergenic cat, try a full sized Maine Coon or a Norwegian forest cat, or a Bombay.

Gotta be short hair! And if we decide to get another feline over lord it will come from the nearby animal shelter. I don't buy cats or dogs. But I will pay to liberate one from a shelter.

150 Best cats wander in on their own. The next best cats come from the shelter.

We've had female Maine Coons all throughout our nearly 53 years of marriage. A wonderful breed.

I had a Bombay - it was the most wonderful critter. Didn't shed, didn't scratch the furniture, never scratched a human. I would highly recommend.

153 Hydroponic? Because, I'm not a big fan of tasteless hydroponics. And, I mean tasteless in a comparative fashion to locally grown the old fashioned way.

I suspect they are hydroponic. Bland, they are. But also not usually mushy, or rife with wormholes and bad spots. I have been buying tomato plants and setting them out, and truth be told, the few good tomatoes that result, while very tasty, end up costing me about five bucks per pound.

154 This! My cat Tigger just showed up in the shop one day. I put out some food and water, and she came up and begged to be petted. Not your typical feral cat at all. Full-time house cat now, and very cuddly.

I love all kitties, I am a definite cat person, but there is nothing wrong with getting a specific breed from an ethical breeder if that is what you want, either. I don’t think I am any worse a cat owner for buying my guys, and they are really amazing cats. There is room for all of us! 🥰

Piper I was not in any way suggesting that no one should buy a specific breed. Or any animal. I just prefer to liberate a mongrel from a shelter because they aren't getting the love and attention that pure bred animals get from a breeder. I don't judge other people who don't do what I do the way I do it.

157 Re: hypoallergenic cats, purebred Russian Blues are proven to produce the lowest amount of histamine of any cat breed. My youngest and I are both dangerously allergic to cats, and our two pair (originally bred in Poland, and imported by a specialist out of Chicago) don't even raise a sniffle out of either of us. They are wonderful companions.
